DUCK AND COVER: Russia Secretly Deploys New Cruise Missile In Violation Of 1987 Arms Control Treaty

The New York Times reports:

Russia has secretly deployed a new cruise missile despite complaints from American officials that it violates a landmark arms control treaty that helped seal the end of the Cold War, administration officials say. The move presents a major challenge for President Trump, who has vowed to improve relations with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and to pursue future arms accords.

The new Russian missile deployment also comes as the Trump administration is struggling to fill key policy positions at the State Department and the Pentagon — and to settle on a permanent replacement for Michael T. Flynn, the national security adviser who resigned late Monday. Mr. Flynn stepped down after it was revealed that he had misled the vice president and other officials over conversations with Moscow’s ambassador to Washington.

The ground-launched cruise missile at the center of American concerns is one that the Obama administration said in 2014 had been tested in violation of a 1987 treaty that bans American and Russian intermediate-range missiles based on land. The Obama administration had sought to persuade the Russians to correct the violation while the missile was still in the test phase. Instead, the Russians have moved ahead with the system, deploying a fully operational unit.

So Donnie, care to explain why your “good friend” is doing this? Still want to claim that he’s only wishes to be a good friend to the US & Europe?

    • Halou

Dear Donald has already said that the ‘real news’ is who is behind the White House leaks. Don’t pay attention to anything else.

  • Halou

Russia’s response to one of their agents in the White House being outed, or a threat to the US to not out any more traitors in the government?

    • clay

or just taking advantage of the space opened up in the confusion they helped to create.

    • coram nobis

The deployment was in the works anyway. Question is what exactly Flynn’s connection was. Today’s timing may be coincidental, but the two events are almost certainly linked somehow.

      • Halou

I’d imagine it was set up like the North Korean missile test, Kim had everything in place for weeks ready to go at a moment’s notice and was only waiting for Abe to be in the US to cause maximum provocation. If Abe had not been in the US then Kim would not have ordered the launch.

If Flynn had not been ousted then Putin would not have ordered the cruise missiles to be deployed as they are, but all the associated hardware has long since been set up. The silo exists, the soldiers are in place, and the provocative news stories already written.

We had a very much more effective deterrent for royal pussy grabbers – which would be high treason.
To be hanged, drawn and quartered was from 1351 a statutory penalty in England for men convicted of high treason.

Convicts were fastened to a hurdle, or wooden panel, and drawn by horse to the place of execution, where they were hanged (almost to the point of death), emasculated (and it was then stuffed in your mouth), disembowelled, beheaded and quartered (chopped into four pieces). Their remains were often displayed in prominent places across the country, such as London Bridge.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanged,_drawn_and_quartered

          • greenmanTN

OK, weird aside. Legend has it that when men are hanged they often ejaculate (kind of like autoerotic asphyxiation) and mandrake roots grow under the gallows as a result. There is a German novel called “Alraune” (German for mandrake) from 1916, which is about a “scientific experiment” of nature over nurture, in which the semen of a hanged serial killer is used to impregnate a nymphomaniacal prostitute, but the girl who results is raised in a very proper household and in convent schools. (There have been 3 movie versions.)

I swear to god that might be the most perverse book I have ever read, with a palpable dread hanging over it like Southern Gothic on steroids. Don’t let anyone tell you things were so innocent back then.

Favorite scene: Alraune and the boy who has always loved her go to a costume ball, she dressed as a soldier, he dressed as a girl. He will do anything she tells him to, so he gets fucked by a soldier while Alraune drinks his tears.

OK, yeah, I have a lot of weird information bouncing around in my head.

But wait, there’s more! (Ginzu knife commercial.)

The author, Hanns Heinz Ewers, at least claimed he stopped practicing law due to the injustance that was done to Oscar Wilde. He wrote a story about Wilde (something like C.3.3.3(?), Wilde’s prison number- the book is in a box somewhere) debating his life with an extraterrestrial creature, arguing over which one is in the imagination of the other. (hard to explain) It’s an oddly powerful story because the implication is that everything that happens to us, no matter how awful, is just entertainment for alien minds.

  • james1200

Has no one seen Battlestar Galactica? The point of having double agents in an administration is so they can neuter the enemy from within. Trump and the chaos he’s causing is doing exactly that while Putin makes his moves.

    http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view1/4874287/brick-o.gif

    • Halou

So you’re saying that Russia is exploiting America’s confusion to create a fait accompli, to establish an advanced military presence in strategic areas beyond it’s own borders that cannot be dislodged except by starting WW3?

And us westerners are supposed to be the imperialists. smh

      • james1200

Haven’t they always been imperialists, too? Even recently, look at what Putin did in Crimea and the Ukraine and Georgia.

        • Halou

That is truly perplexing. People from Africa, the Middle East and Central-Southern America never hesitate to call out the US and western European countries for the darker episodes of history, but they love Russia not only despite it’s imperial history but as the Crimean annexation demonstrates, they love Russia precisely because of it’s imperialism.

          • james1200

They hate the U.S. for the same reason many in the U.S. hate it, because it’s all powerful and has done terrible things but in doing so, they make false equivalencies between the U.S. and people like Putin and Syria’s Assad, when there is no comparison. Putin and Assad and other states like North Korea are totalitarian states, who inflict nothing but misery and pain on their own and others. It’s willful ignorance on the part of those who make these ridiculous comparisons.

          • edrex

and evidently they’re all republicans, too.

          • coram nobis

It’s said that Putin keeps a portrait of Tsar Nicholas I in his office. The first Nicholas vastly expanded the empire and defended the Crimea against the west, so it’s probably more than just admiration for the Tsar’s good looks.

            https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/20/Portrait_of_Grand_Duke_Nikolai_Pavlovich_%28Hermitage%29.jpg/170px-Portrait_of_Grand_Duke_Nikolai_Pavlovich_%28Hermitage%29.jpg

          • Halou

Knowing this, if I was a western leader hosting him for a state visit I would make a point of having large portraits of Nicholas II hanging up in the main meeting room. A reminder of how militaristic autocracies are doomed to failure.

Remembering that time the British had the Irish leader over for a visit and had a portrait of Oliver Cromwell on the wall. English people live him but the Irish… Well, apologies were quickly given.

          • Amanda B. Rekendwith

I find it intriguing that Nicholas I is the great-great-grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
If/when Charles ascends to become King, the Russians will have a direct line ancestor on the throne of Great Britain.

          • BobSF_94117

The only African and Middle Eastern countries that “love” Russia are the USSR’s former client states (and, frankly, Russia has been more loyal to them than we have been to our client states (exception Israel)).

          • LaChatSayWha

Honestly though, the only people in Russian client states who love Russians are the few oligarchs profiting from Russian money (which is always pretty small amount.) Theyre imperialist dicks just like us, except that because of their history, they are way more racist way more brutal, and hardly anything positive ever come out of dealing with them. They know it themselves, check the memoirs of Russian leaders, military men, scientists, artists…

Just because United States foreigner policy sucks in many ways does not mean that other cultures necessarily suck less. And since the Russians have always been poor and oppressed, they tend to give a lot less, and take a lot more, than western imperialists.

          • BobSF_94117

I don’t think that last bit is true at all. Russia, with its client state Cuba, sent hundreds of thousands of doctors, nurses, and engineers into poor countries over the decades to work on improving the lives of the people there, far more than the U.S. did with our volunteer organizations (gutted by Bush). Many of those people were dedicated precisely because they knew hardship and poverty and truly believed Communism would work.

I’m not saying the Soviet leaders didn’t maintain their control by creating a local version of their autocracy.

            From a Guardian story:

Intelligence officials were quoted as saying that Flynn’s communications with the Russian ambassador to Washington, Sergei Kislyak, dated back to before the election, adding to the pile of unanswered questions about possible collusion between the Trump campaign and an operation, run by Vladimir Putin himself according to US intelligence agencies, to steer the US presidential election in Trump’s favour. …
            * * *
Putin’s muted response took the Obama White House by surprise. He did not carry out tit-for-tat expulsions, but made a point of inviting the children of US diplomats in Moscow to the Kremlin for Christmas parties. Trump showed his approval in a 30 December tweet saying: “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!”

Michael McFaul, a former US ambassador to Moscow, said: “This tweet does kind of make one wonder if the president-elect knew about the contents of Flynn conversation on sanctions with Kislyak.”

  • Uncle Mark

If Trump truly didn’t have any ties to Russia or was not being blackmailed by then, this would be the perfect time for Trump to stand up to Putin and threaten punishment. The silence from Trump speaks volumes !!

    • JWC

Protecting his Russian interest and you are righ, this administration can be read more by what is not said than what Conway/Spicer spew

    • LaChatSayWha

If Donnie weren’t riding Vladimir’s dick, Russia would never have tested us with this missile launch.

  • Joe in PA

So…bets on how long before President Obama gets blamed?

    • ByronK

      Any minute now?

    • The_Wretched

I think donny already tweeted today that Obama never got his picks investigated.

    • coram nobis

Not very long. The missiles were about to deploy last fall; question is, did Putin know who would succeed Obama and figure he could get away with this?

      • billbear1961

        Yes and yes.

  • Rebecca Gardner
  • AW

Do you know who would have had this covered and done? Hillary. She would have handled it.

    • Tomcat

Congress would have had her testifying every day trying to find as lie to impeach her for.

    • LesbianTippingHabits

Re Hillary, absolutely. And left a decent tip, besides. You go, girl!

      Thank you.

    • Chucktech

      I dunno…. I just don’t trust Hillary….

    • LaChatSayWha

Putin would not be testing her with the missile launch. He knows Hillary don’t play. Instead we have the man baby riding Putin’s dick & Vlady’s going to ride roughshod over Twitler and our country.

The real news is that the Burlington Coat Factory isn’t carrying Ivanka’s stuff any more. They’re so mean. They hate smart, successful women.

I know, especially since Trump is the “law and order” precedent. (sic)

      • Guess?

        He’s unpresidented.

Trump has fucked our country up in three short weeks and leaders around the world know he is incompetent along with the people in his administration. The leader of other countries are more dangerous to our safety than any the people Trump tells us we should fear

          • LaChatSayWha

From all reports, Roy Cohn was dUmp’s surrogate father. Yeah, my childhood was pretty fucking rough, but how fucked up would little Donnie’s life have to been to make Roy Cohn a positive choice?

          • William

Did young Trump give it up for creepy Cohn?

    • Tomcat

No way this guy last very long.

Didn’t Trump pull the USA out of NATO?

      • William

Iskander missiles can’t reach all the western European capitals.

Well, you know, it’s a friendly, comradely cruise missile system that we would certainly not deploy against friendly countries like TrumpUSA.

Meanwhile, it turns out our forces had spent years getting the Mexican military to trust ours, esp. since 2010. That will fray fast with Donald’s insults. Turned out that it was good business as well.

    http://www.sacbee.com/news/nation-world/world/article132680054.html

Despite setbacks, the defense relationship in recent years has paid off for both sides.

The recapture of El Chapo was carried out by Mexican marines who had been specially trained by American forces for years and have become elite partners of the United States in the drug war.

The Pentagon spent $60 million from 2010 to 2015 training Mexican forces, teaching more than 7,670 elite courses to 9,000 soldiers and marines, according to an analysis by the Mexican newspaper Milenio. The training focused on special tactics, anti-narcotics operations and anti-terrorism strategies, according to the report.
    * * *
In what the then-head of the U.S. Northern Command, Navy Adm. William Gortney, called “a historical milestone in our security relationship with Mexico,” Mexico took the “unprecedented” step in 2015 of reaching out to the Pentagon to go on a buying binge of military equipment. It bought more than $1.15 billion worth in a year, including ammunition, Humvees and 21 Black Hawk helicopters, in what Gortney said was “a 100-fold increase” from previous years.

    • billbear1961

      Everything Trump touches he ruins!

      • CatCope

        My sympathies, Melania.

    • BobSF_94117

I’m not sure militarizing the “war on drugs” is the best solution, but since we can’t seem to keep snorting, Mexico has little choice.

  • bkmn

    Trump is Putie’s cuckold.

“The move presents a major challenge for President Trump, who has vowed to improve relations with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and to pursue future arms accords.”

Lucy: All right, quiet everybody. Our director will be here any minute and we’ll start rehearsal.
    Violet: Director? What director?
    Lucy: Charlie Brown!
    Violet: Oh no, we’re doomed!

I’m just praying we don’t have a repeat of the Cuban Missile Crisis, because with 45 at the helm, it may not turn out quite so well this time.
