REPORT: US Spies Are Withholding Intel From Trump Because The Kremlin “Has Ears” Inside White House

The Observer reports:

Out of worries about the White House’s ability to keep secrets, some of our spy agencies have begun withholding intelligence from the Oval Office. Why risk your most sensitive information if the president may ignore it anyway? A senior National Security Agency official explained that NSA was systematically holding back some of the “good stuff” from the White House, in an unprecedented move. For decades, NSA has prepared special reports for the president’s eyes only, containing enormously sensitive intelligence. In the last three weeks, however, NSA has ceased doing this, fearing Trump and his staff cannot keep their best SIGINT secrets.

Since NSA provides something like 80 percent of the actionable intelligence in our government, what’s being kept from the White House may be very significant indeed. However, such concerns are widely shared across the IC, and NSA doesn’t appear to be the only agency withholding intelligence from the administration out of security fears.

What’s going on was explained lucidly by a senior Pentagon intelligence official, who stated that “since January 20, we’ve assumed that the Kremlin has ears inside the SITROOM,” meaning the White House Situation Room, the 5,500 square-foot conference room in the West Wing where the president and his top staffers get intelligence briefings. “There’s not much the Russians don’t know at this point,” the official added in wry frustration.

The above was written by “former National Security Agency analyst and counterintelligence officer” John Schindler. You’ll definitely want to read the full piece. It’s worth noting that the Observer is owned by Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner.

Are we headed for a military coup? Could that be something that might save us?

    • Todd20036

I’m not a big fan of military coups, but in this case, I’d welcome one if they also took out Pence and Ryan

      • Randy Left Brooklyn

Can we throw in McConnell too?

        • Todd20036

I’m all for that, but without the Nazis, McConnell would be effectively neutered.

But what the hell, he’s an idiot too

        • RoFaWh

          Him too.

      • RoFaWh

The word you are looking for is “co-conspirators”.

      • BudClark

THAT’S the problem. You have to take out the ENTIRE line of presidential succession, AND the 41 treasonous Republican Senators who signed that letter to Iran during the nuclear negotiations.

It’s like trying to cleanse the Aegean Stables with a garden hose.

    • Judas Peckerwood

If the US needs to be “saved” by a military coup we should just chuck in the towel.

      • PickyPecker

Um…we began with a military coup.

        • Todd20036

Yes, but that one didn’t count since it was just us versus a bunch of savages.

Yes, that is how my grammar school history book described Native Americans, though to my credit, even as a kid, that felt wrong.

          • PickyPecker

yeah, I remember that too. ugh.

        • Judas Peckerwood

Nope, ’twas a rebellion against the military propping up the colonial power structure.

          • PickyPecker

I’m fine with calling it a ‘rebellion.’

          • Todd20036

Ok, it’s a rebellion. But do we have a Jedi working for us, too?

          • PickyPecker

Buff and with hot uniforms? I’m in.

    • Treant

History shows us that military coups generally don’t work out that well. Once seized, power is not often returned.

      • PickyPecker

May be our only option to ‘clean house’ so to speak.

        • Treant

If Congress refuses to act–and all indications are that they will–then there are only three remaining options. Two involve coups.

Invoking the 25th, at this point, isn’t going to help. Pence has had a hand in with these cabinet choices and I’m beginning to think that he’s as compromised as Trump.

          • PickyPecker

I think he knows a LOT, and has had a hand in things from the get-go.

          • paganguy

There’s a part of me that thinks it was always the plan to have him ooze into the Presidency once they jettisoned DT.

          • I’d still roll the dice with Pence than have even a single day longer with the barking mad yam.

          • Treant

Ditto. But I don’t think that’ll end up happening if people are going up the river for Russian connections. They’ll ditch Pence on the “fruit of the poisoned tree” assumption and go with Ryan.

Besides, Pence is an idiot and everybody knows it. He makes W look like Einstein.

          • Piet

Ryan’s no better, though. His economic ‘expertise’ is stupidity in compound form, and he never took advantage of a government program he couldn’t wait to strip of its funding.

          • Treant

Nobody in the chain of command is particularly palatable, really, but that’s the only set of choices we have.

          • BudClark

Ryan’s only POSSIBLE use would be making a porn flick with Aaron Schock.

          • pluky

But how do you do that with two power bottoms?

          • BudClark

            A LARGE two-headed dildo …

          • Piet

            I like how you think!

      • Todd20036

I agree, and yet, the military couldn’t possibly be worse than the Nazis we have.

        • Treant

We’d end up with the equivalent of the Praetorian Guard choosing the Caesar.

At best. At worst, it’s a military dictatorship.

Temporarily, it wouldn’t be worse than this White House. Over the long term…maybe.

          • PickyPecker

Hard to guess, but there’s always the possibility they could pivot to a total ‘reset’ for Washington. Keep the peace; start over and hand things back to the people via the Constitution.

      • RoFaWh

        There may be no alternative.

      • Hue-Man

Turkey shows what happens when a coup FAILS – absolute dictatorship, widespread purges of all enemies.

        • bzrd

it was a fake coup so recep erdogan could have a “legitimate” reason to arrest and fire people whom he thought were the opposition

          • Man_in_the_mists

Especially since Turkey’s military has performed coups before and given power back to the people afterwards.

    • Might be worth noting that this push-back is coming from those who know (or at least reasonably believe with a high level of confidence) just how compromised and unfit this President is.

For example, as Treant suggested in the other thread, one of the most straightforward ways to see if there really is national security-threatening leaking going on is to plant some phony but plausible intelligence with key individuals — and then find out whether the Russians learn about it.

For sure, the NatSec types can be overzealous and clearly have been angling for more power to spy on…well, everything and everyone. But they do take their jobs seriously, and the very idea that the Kremlin is likely pulling their puppet president’s strings has got to stick in their collective craws.

There are more than a few ways out of this mess. Some would depend on the Republicans, who’ve proven they’re craven cowards, so that’s probably out unless they have no choice.

Another is military coup, but while those often have turned out badly for the nations in question, not all have — it depends on whether the coup leaders are trying to restore a viable civilian gov’t or take over. I actually suspect our country’s military leaders would be the “we run things only for six months, at the end of which time there will be new national elections, overseen by impartial inspectors and with voting rights guaranteed for all citizens.”

Still another — and right now this is the one which might be more likely — is an absolute blockbuster revelation, embarrassing to the point of forcing the Administration to resign. Say, for example, a video tape showing Donald raping an underage girl. Or actual quid pro quo transcripts of Donald or members of his inner circle negotiating on his behalf directly with Putin and the Kremlin. Or unequivocal evidence of treason.

Hard to say. All I believe at this point is this nation will not survive in its current form long enough to have routine free & fair elections ever again, unless something drastic happens.

      • RoFaWh

The US desperately needs what the Germans have had since the end of WWII: a section of government devoted to the suppression of fascism in any form.

      • Oh, and one more thing: The very sudden arrests of the spies & leakers in Moscow — the ones associated with that embarrassing dossier on Donald — coming almost immediately after his inauguration and earliest briefings ought to be evidence enough there is a mole in the White House. Possibly more than one. And it might even include Donald himself.

      • thatotherjean

I do not say this lightly, but I’d be in favor of planting a phony story and seeing where it turns up and how it got there, before what seems to me to be a thoroughly corrupt government gets a chance to wreck more than it already has–and making the results public, if they are what we suspect, so the current Executive Branch will HAVE to be forced out of office for reasons that even the dullest American voter can understand.

    • Nowhereman

He’s pissed off the press and the intelligence community, is working on alienating the military, Big Business and Congress–and even a few Trumpansies are starting to regret voting for him. It’s going to be messy. I just hope it takes that whole party with him.

    • unsavedheathen

      NO!

    • Christopher

Not my favourite idea. Hopefully Congress removes him and his cronies before anymore damage is done.

  • Judas Peckerwood

    Good fucking god.

    • Todd20036

Ok, who gave you my dick pix?

      • Randy Left Brooklyn

Since the dick pics are out there anyway, why not share with those of us who haven’t seen them yet?

        • bzrd

jeeezzzzzass on a pogo stick is fun

  • Treant

OK, so in what universe is this tolerable in terms of a US government and when, exactly, do they start doing something about it? Post-review, it sounds like they’re doing a bit more than “assuming” there’s a problem, they know there is.

Information is not withheld on a whim, or on an assumption. They have data, now act on it.

  • Todd20036

And yet, Hillary is the corrupt one.

Of course, since Trump is a Nazi, this is ok.

Frankly, I’m grateful the adults in the government know better than to hand intel to a Nazi traitor, even if that traitor is the POTUS.

    • Max_1

Because… let me spell it out for you… EEEEE-MALES!

      • Todd20036

Are those men who had their genitalia replaced with a smartphone?

      • Carl

It’s sexists on both the left and the right who would rather have a male nazi sell us out than an older female whose voice they’ve gotten tired of hearing.

      • Andymac3

Shemales, that was the problem, Trump doesn’t like shemales, their pee aim is better than his and he is always drenched.

    • RoFaWh

      TRAITOR!!!!

I wonder if, when the trials start, they’ll conform to the norms of Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence or the more effective methods of wringing confessions of guilt out of the accused favored during the Soviet show trials?

Won’t admit guilt? Take him down to the special interrogation unit and he will tomorrow morning. Surprising what results you can get from bastinado.

      • Todd20036

If Bastinado has a hot ass, I’d love to get results from him.

        Sounds like a cute Brazilian.

I have no idea why my mind is just squatting in the gutter.

        • another_steve

Your mind is always in the gutter.

Which is why I read all your comments.

Sedition not treason. No declared war. Read the USA definition of treason in the Constitution.

While here it may be good, it is also dangerous that any governmemtal group, like the CIA can hold back information from the president. I do not like that precident. What is to stop them from witholding in the future or was it regularly done in the past? This is the first time in my life I have zero belief that a president is at least very minimally qualified, as war criminals Reagan and Bush were

This is not good in any way, but short term with the luffa-faced, lard-ass, seditious, women-assulting, fear-mongering, constantly lying, man-baby, orange shitgibbon.

        • CottonBlimp

I do not like that precident. What is to stop them from witholding in the future…?

My thought as well. Frankly, I don’t know what else they can do, but it’s going to be a real big problem even after Trump is dead and buried, that we have shadowy agencies operated secretly and outside the law, with no real civilian oversight.

          • BudClark

Well, sweetie, THAT’S certainly nothing NEW (sigh).

        • Margaret Khan

Sedition is not treason. They do not pledge allegiance to our flag, they march to the tune of another drummer, in this case the new world order or one world government. But they pretend that allegiance in order to get a job at the White House. What do they deserve? Destroying the Republic of the United States of America is a pretty good gig if you can get it. George Soros will probably pay them well.

I was just thinking the other day that if the organizations that deal with high level security are smart they would withhold information regarding “Black Ops” and other high security data from Trump.

It would very much be in the realm of possibility due to his narcissism, self-promotion and diarrhea mouth to reference something that should not be in public domain in a speech or tweet.

It is my understanding that this was done to a few presidents and I read one analysis where Bush one was and exception and was briefed on nearly everything.

      • Chuck in NYC

Bush I was, if I recall correctly, heavily involved with the CIA before he became VP anyway.

      • PickyPecker

I can’t imagine the entire populous of the various agencies involved being all that happy.

      • Ray Taylor

That would be the NSA. Flynn and Bannon are the ‘ears’ reporting to Putin.

    • bitwise

      Kushner clearly wants Flynn out.

    • Randy Left Brooklyn

Since the connection is obvious, you have to wonder if The Donald, and not just Kushner, wants someone out. Kushner would be smart enough not to do this without The Donald’s implicit blessing. We know how The Donald feels about loyalty.

  • Tomcat

If they cannot trust the fool then Congress needs to start proceedings to impeach him for National Security.

    • Ray Taylor

Well, Mr. Trump, did you forget your staff blacked out the press room windows at Mar-a-Lago?

If you let the press take pictures, they might report on what happens Mr. President. Of course, if it won’t be about the weird movie you have running in your head. It isn’t actually possible to take pictures of that.

          • Chuck in NYC

You’re right and I hadn’t even thought until now about what the lonely staffers at Camp David are doing these days. Given the alternative, they’d probably rather be bored than surrounded by this White House mob.

“He’ll act more presidential once he’s in office”
“He was elected be the PEOPLE y’all!”

Fuck this and every other goddammed rationalization anyone ever uttered. There is no excuse to have put this cretin in the White House.

    • PickyPecker

I listened as they called my President a Muslim.
I listened as they called him and his family a pack of monkeys.
I listened as they said he wasn’t born here.
I watched as they blocked every single path to progress that they could.
I saw the pictures of him as Hitler.
I watched them shut down the government and hurt the entire nation twice. I watched them turn their backs on every opportunity to open worthwhile dialog. I watched them say that they would not even listen to any choice for Supreme Court no matter who the nominee was. I listened as they openly said that they will oppose him at every turn.
I watched as they did just that.
      I listened.
      I watched.
      I paid attention.
Now, I’m being called on to be tolerant.
      To move forward.
      To denounce protesters.
      To “Get over it.”
      To accept this…

      I will not.

I will do my part to make sure this great American mistake becomes the embarrassing footnote of our history that it deserves to be.
I will do this as quickly as possible every chance I get.
I will do my part to limit the damage that this man can do to my country.
I will watch his every move and point out every single mistake and misdeed
in a loud and proud voice.
I will let you know in a loud voice every time this man backs away from a promise he made to them.
Them. The people who voted for him.
The ones who sold their souls and prayed for him to win.
I will do this so that they never forget.
      And they will hear me.
They will see it in my eyes when I look at them.
They will hear it in my voice when I talk to them.
They will know that I know who they are.
They will know that I know what they are.
Do not call for my tolerance. I’ve tolerated all I can. Now it’s their turn to tolerate ridicule. Be aware, make no mistake about it, every single thing that goes wrong in our country from this day forward is now Trump’s fault just as much as they thought it was Obama’s. I find it unreasonable for them to expect from me what they were entirely unwilling to give.

Kushner, I discern, is an intellectual Jew. I’m an intellectual (cultural, not religious) Jew, so I grok.

Exactly. If they come across something that needs immediate action to protect the country, who are they going to go to?

As long as that’s the case, Trump’s base isn’t gonna see a problem – with anything. In order to wake these dumb mofos up so they realize this isn’t a sporting event, they’re gonna need to lose something they don’t want to live without for a while.

    • Tomcat

      And they DON’T drink Corona.

  • DuaneBidoux

If this is true things are far worse off than even the most pessimistic observers have noted.

This is the kind of thing that has “constitutional crisis” written all over it.

    • We’ve been in one for a while now, especially since the election when it became clear Donald would thumb his nose at every single law and even the Constitutional requirement he not use his position to enrich himself and his family.

But yeah, this is a level of clusterfuckitude I have not witnessed before in my entire life — and I remember how bad 1968 was.

      • Millstone

When he didn’t simply attempt to defy the court’s freeze on his immigration EO, I thought that was a good sign (it’s all relative).

        • J Ascher

Trump won’t let some “pesky” thing like a court order stand in his way: he’ll plunge ahead with another EO, quite probably far worse than the original.

        • True, but it’s also clear the CPB has been given orders to harass anybody and everybody whose skin is brown or they have a ME-sounding name. Including U.S. citizens returning home.

          That part is still happening.

      • DuaneBidoux

Love your word “clusterfuckitude.” We could add perhaps “clusterfuckerie.”

And if there is not yet a verb (“to clusterfuck”) then Trump is creating the need for such a verb.

        I clusterfuck
        You clusterfuck
        He clusterfucks
        We clusterfuck
        They clusterfuck

    • Natty Enquirer

I think it has “coup” written on it. The danger is not only from Trump & Co. It’s from other would-be dictators who see an opportunity to swoop in and “save” us from a dangerous administration.

      • DuaneBidoux

Yeah. And the fact that there are many factions, all of them true believers.

    • Millstone

This is possibly the most alarming revelation yet. Assets who can’t share vital information because they don’t want to risk the POTUS getting wind of it? That is off-the-charts threatening to the country.

      • DuaneBidoux

Not only that but you know for sure that critical strategic partnership countries are certainly going to begin withholding info from the US that they might of otherwise shared.

It’s hard to know how far up or how deep the emerging rot resides but the implications of all this are terrifying.

  • SoCalGal20

So you got this and then you’ve got Stephen Miller this morning on Mett the Press basically threatening a dictatorship when talking about the Judicial Branch and how they have too much power. I’m placing my bets on the intelligence community/military if there is a legit power struggle/coup.

This isn’t news – we’ve heard nothing but “activist judges” for decades as part of the strategy to smear the judicial branch.

      • Ninja0980

Something Neil Gorsuch has played a part in.

      • SoCalGal20

No, the activist judges thing isn’t. The comment, “…Our opponents, the media, and the whole world will soon see, as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned” is. Keep in mind this is also the little shit that wrote the Muslim ban EO.

    • Andymac3

It’s only great if you work for ICE.

That will piss off the GOP in Congress.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

He’s the only non-Trump, non-Bannon stooge, non-Sessions stooge in the inner circle. He’s had a target on his back since before day one.

      • BobSF_94117

He’s also the only one in the inner circle who was frequently described as being out of the loop on the various fuckups of the last three weeks.

  • Lars Littlefield

My money is on Bannon. He wreaks of everything wrong with tea party and the new jingoism.

    • I think he’s just like David Duke in polite clothing.

    • WretchedMouse

heh don’t forget he reeks as well 😉

      • Lars Littlefield

But of course. Never claimed he didn’t. I wonder which one would smell the worst if we sat them next to a smell-o-meter?

        • WretchedMouse

Depends if Bannon had Popov or Wild Turkey before hand. *shrug*

  • If you were Putin what would you want to do strategically now?
    1. Preoccupy the USA by having her engage in a shooting war somewhere so you can go about reversing what you consider to be the greatest crime against your country in the past several centuries – the breakup of the Russian Empire (the USSR post 1917). So, get the USA to go to war with Iran and pin her down in the rest of the Middle East.
    2. Drive the USA and Europe apart by breaking up NATO –
    3. Break up the EU. Ensure that the Ukraine never joins an alliance against you
    4. Drive China into an alliance with you. Make the Pacific theater another headache for Pax Americans
    5. Keep the price of Oil and Gas high — a war in the Persian Gulf will accomplish this quite well.
I can go on and on. But Vladimir Putin is either a genius or as lucky as Ronald Reagan in shaping the next generation of foreign policy dynamics. The only screw-up is a nuclear war somewhere — and Russia has many more potentially hot borders to worry about then the USA does.

  • Lars Littlefield

Gee. Real Americans aren’t concerned with this news. There are far more important things to be preoccupied with. For instance, the Grammys are on tonight. I predict it will be days and days before anyone notices that the Russian flag flies over the White House.

    • Natty Enquirer

      Well, duh. I mean, “da.”

    • Millstone

Nothing makes me feel older than the Grammys. I don’t know most of the nominees / performers, I couldn’t tell Beyonce from Rhianna if you blindfolded me and I don’t relate to the music.

For most, “news” is only what feeds their narrative. “If the news is important, it’ll come to me on Facebook.” (shudder)

  • Dirk Prophet

The Russian connection to the Trump campaign should be on the news, all the time.

  • Treant

Looking around, Washington is incredibly quiet this evening on everything.

That’s usually NOT a good sign in terms of things going well. Given the cut-off of the CNN interview with the general regarding Flynn, I’m going to assume that the proverbial feces will impact the proverbial rotating blades in the next few days.

    • Sam_Handwich

“cut-off of the CNN interview with the general regarding Flynn”

guess i missed that. what happened?

      • Treant

Right in the middle of the interview about Flynn’s major issues, the interview mysteriously cut and…well, it was a little odd. I’m thinking the network cut the feed to avoid any possibility of leaking a story early. Or they got a call to cut it before they gave away something.

I might be able to find a recording of it somewhere.

Trump-related and interesting. NYTimes column about Caitlyn Jenner’s “mission.” Given that according to Gallup 21% of LGBT voters are republican, worth a read. I’m not a republican, I think Caitlyn is a disaster of a human and not very bright, but gay republicans are here and rather than simply call them names I want to know why we’ve lost them.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/11/opinion/sunday/caitlyn-jenners-mission.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-left-region&region=opinion-c-col-left-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region

we never lost them. some people have no souls, even gay people.

      • Hell, look into the eyes of any Log Cabin Republican and ask them whether they prefer civil rights or tax & social services cuts, and you’ll have your answer.

        • Earl

Although if you asked me if I’d rather have civil rights or a decent job…

Unless you mean “decent job” because your last few tricks had over imaginative gag reflexes… 😉

      • Millstone

That’s not 100% true. I sometimes have a hard time navigating the LGBT left (particularly at JMG) because it’s a really hostile place if you challenge the narrative. Some folks feel so alienated they look for community elsewhere. Now, I don’t GAF when I get called names and I’ll never defect to the dark side, but I understand why some people feel unwelcome in the left’s lockstep (ducks for cover) environment.

I’m 98% on the same page with most of you here, but I still have to self-censor sometimes lest I get called troll or homocon, and that’s both absurd and a shame.

The ironic thing about white racists bleating about superior genes is that people in Africa have the least amount of Neanderthal DNA in their system.

      https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/neanderthal/

“Everyone living outside of Africa today has a small amount of Neanderthal
in them, carried as a living relic of these ancient encounters. A team
of scientists comparing the full genomes of the two species concluded
that most Europeans and Asians have between 1 to 2 percent Neanderthal
DNA. Indigenous sub-Saharan Africans have none, or very little
Neanderthal DNA because their ancestors did not migrate through Eurasia.”

“the Kremlin has ears inside the SITROOM.” The Intelligence Agencies withholding intelligence information from Trump and his staff because they fear that they cannot be trusted with the information. We’re in deep trouble folks. If the Kremlin has ears inside the SITROOM, we have traitors inside the White House. Congress had better step up to the plate.

    • Sam_Handwich

they won’t turn until their base does. and their base is stupid

i’d like to hear the entire Bush family offer a full-throated condemnation

it’s not up to Dems at this point. it’s up to what is left of the GOP establishment.

      • Last year in one of those “har har what if Trump actually won” pieces, the writer proposed that a good number of Republicans would partner with Democrats to limit presidential powers before he even took office and vote against his crazier shit including appointments. That isn’t even close to what has happened. A couple of GOP Senators have voted against a couple of appointments but every fucking one of them as gone through, if just barely. It would only take 3 Republicans to keep any Senate action from passing and we can’t even get that. Republicans are scared shitless of the Tea Party. You’d think a few who are close to retiring anyway like McCain would stand up but no. So much for being a maverick. They’re all cowards, the ones that aren’t complete Teabagger morons. This is the worst thing in my lifetime when it comes to government. Nixon was paranoid and pathological but he at least knew how things worked and wasn’t intentionally fucking things up out of ignorance. Fuck. This is bad and it’s not going to get better because the Teabaggers will go down with SS Trump before they will admit they were ever wrong.

        • Millstone

You make a good argument for term limits. (But I confess I’d miss Dianne.)

          • Term limits are not going to pass. It would be like mice voting to outlaw cheese. In addition, we have term limits. Every house seat is up every two years and in spite of low approval numbers, almost all of them get re-elected. The Senate more slowly but voters keep sending them back. People say they want term limits but only on someone else’s representatives. But even if we got them it would mean a lot of newbies which would just make staffers and lobbyists even more powerful. So it wouldn’t actually change anything. Until voters exercise their own power (by showing up especially in off-year elections) things will stay the same. They are more afraid of angering donors than they are of not getting re-elected. Until that changes, things will continue like they have.

  • Pat Padrnos

When are the Repubs going to grow spines and deal with this. No need to say the Dems are ready to do that. This is the scariest situation I can ever recall – and I remember how disheartened I was when Bush was elected. He created some disasters we are still paying for – but this is so far beyond that. Nero fiddles while Rome burns. This needs to be dealt with yesterday.

    • BobSF_94117

Fear not! The greatest minds of American Conservatism are burning the midnight oil, trying to determine the extent of the damage done to our democracy and how to lay the blame on Obama…

Kushner’s editor, John Mulholland, evidently green-lighted it. Mulholland is also the assistant editor at The Guardian, so it’s hard to say what his politics might be. A good editor is occasionally gonna piss of a publication’s owner. We’ll see if he’s still Kushner’s editor tomorrow.

There’s a term not much used anymore, but most of us will remember – nouveaux riches (plural) – for people who have recently come into money, usually through business but not through education. It was often immigrants or children of immigrants, who grew up in other cultures and had different ideas on decorating from prevailing tastes among wealthy Americans.

For it to continue in Trump’s generation, after attending the schools he did, is… unusual.

You’re correct. But the main spillway was the one that had the hole that opened up. The damage keeps getting bigger. They’re pretty much having to maximize flow from the primary spillway to free up space, as storms are set to hit on Wed.

      • Natty Enquirer

No, that is the rapidly eroding concrete spillway. The emergency spillway (which is just a gully) is also in use. The Feather River has plenty of capacity; the biggest thread is turbidity (mud and rocks) which will kill the wildlife.

Being genteel only ever mattered to the middle class, those pompous, materialistic NIMBY wankers with delusions of class, whose eyeballs would bleed at the mere idea that their teenaged son might be masturbating.

For better or worse, the middle class is dead. Vulgarness is what rules politics now. With people like Trump coming to power, it’s not hard to resent that fact. But vulgarity isn’t all bad; it can be honest, it can be passionate, and it can be human. Going genteel when Republicans go vulgar hasn’t helped Democrats in damn near three decades. It’s what led to the completely insane narrative that Hillary was dishonest and Trump “tells it like it is”.

  • Ninja0980

So sad that we have a potential catastrophe unfolding in California and I tuned to CNN and……Anthony Bourdain. Let’s tune to MSNBC……oh a Lockup repeat. Remember when a news channel actually covered the, um, NEWS? Sigh…..

    • billbear1961

24-hour news channels and they can’t cover something THIS important NOW.

NEWS isn’t what they’re REALLY about.

      • houstonray

Amen billbear! Maybe at the top of the hour. Who knows. I did however find live coverage on The Weather Channel. They are doing a great job with traffic updates, and showing areas of potential flooding.

    • What amazes me is this has all the necessary visuals for the usual 24/7 sensationalistic coverage, including a natural disaster unfolding…but no. It’s not as easy as having talking heads talking about Donald’s latest twittertantrum.

      • houstonray

Exactly! It’s like a real life disaster movie. A plane crash and it’s 24/7 wall to wall coverage. trump’s tweets and more 24/7 coverage. This story and crickets.

And remarkably irresponsible of them. The dam is not in danger of collapse.

        I hate Twitter.

        • johncAtl

No, the dam is okay. It’s the emergency spillway that is the danger.

        • Cuberly

In the google news aggregator almost half of the realtime news articles being posted state, dam collapse, or imminent collapse. Which of course, isn’t true.

          • johncAtl

Yeah…it’s a mistake to say the dam is going to collapse. But the spillway is part of the dam, and if it fails then it’s essentially a failure of the dam. To the people downstream it doesn’t matter if it’s the dam or the spillway that failed.

          • BobSF_94117

No, it’s, at best, a failure near the dam…

It matters a very great deal because they are drastically different things.

          • johncAtl

Was the spillway not built as part of the dam?

            https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c5/Oroville_dam.jpg

          • BobSF_94117

I was being silly. Yes, the spillways are parts of the dam. The regular

spillway has failed and, if the photos I’ve seen weren’t showing some temporary shutdown for examination purposes, it has been turned off.

With the spillway closed, the water is overtopping the dam along the length of the emergency spillway, which is just a section of the dam that’s shorter than the rest, allowing water to spill over it. What poses a danger, though, is the mud and rock in the hillside under/in front of the spillway, which is NOT part of the dam. As the emergency spillway water flows over that terrain, it carries away dirt and rocks and plants, and that mud can cause problems downriver, partly because it increases the volume of flow and partly because it changes how the flow behaves.

In any case, whatever it does will be far, far less that what would happen if the dam failed. “Dam failure” means something particular — it’s a technical term and it means the failure of the actual dam in a catastrophic way.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dam_failure

(cool YouTube videos, if you’re into disaster porn)

          • johncAtl

I agree, a total collapse of the dam would be much more catastrophic than a failure of the emergency spillway. I’m just saying that the dam, spillway and emergency spillway were all part of a project to control the flow of water. And a failure of any of those parts is a failure of the project.

          • BobSF_94117

They take their cue from 140-word blurbs. Sigh.

    • SoCalGal20

Holy shit. They used the emergency spillway the other day for the first time in 50 years because of damage to the main spillway but they said there was no threat.

      • houstonray

What makes me nervous is the fact that they said they wouldn’t have to use the aux spillway. And then they did. They they said earlier today it wouldn’t fail and it has. Then they said both wouldn’t fail together and they have. I don’t have confidence in the fact that the dam is safe…

        • SoCalGal20

Well, the L.A. NBC station posted this about 30 mins ago but we’ll see. There’s a flash flood warning in that area until 4:15pm tomorrow.

So I’m reading that they think they have the situation under control, but as an added precaution they expanded the evacuation area for the second time. From what I’ve read the number of people evacuated stands at 130,000.

And, to clear up the dam/spillway = dam failing back and forth.

Yes, but if the hillside under the emergency spillway goes, it hardly matters about the dam. Lake Oroville has the second-largest reservoir in Califiornia and the highest dam in the country. The effects could be felt as far downriver as Sacramento.

This is apparently in the dining room at Mar-a-Lago, where Donald wouldn’t even interrupt his dinner to find some place private to receive a confidential briefing and information about North Korea’s missile launch.

Who the fuck needs Russian spies in the White House? Apparently one can collect secrets just by bribing the wait-staff at Donald’s restaurant. Or simply sit close enough to overhear everything.

Word is also because it was dark there, Bannon and Flynn used their obviously not-secure phones as flashlights so Donald could see the confidential briefing papers he was being shown. There’s even a chance we’re seeing one of them right next to his elbow.

    • Lumpy Gaga

      Where’s the fiddle?

    • More from the story:

As Mar-a-Lago’s wealthy members looked on from their tables, and with a keyboard player crooning in the background, Trump and Abe’s evening meal quickly morphed into a strategy session, the decision-making on full view to fellow diners, who described it in detail to CNN.
      (…)
Trump’s National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and chief strategist Steve Bannon left their seats to huddle closer to Trump as documents were produced and phone calls were placed to officials in Washington and Tokyo.

The patio was lit only with candles and moonlight, so aides used the camera lights on their phones to help the stone-faced Trump and Abe read through the documents.
      (…)
Even as a flurry of advisers and translators descended upon the table carrying papers and phones for their bosses to consult, dinner itself proceeded apace. Waiters cleared the wedge salads and brought along the main course as Trump and Abe continued consulting with aides.

  • Paul David

Boy, this may be how the Trump administration functionally ends:

No impeachment, or any other such upheaval. Nope, none of that. The administration just gets quietly boxed into a corner where it can do the least damage and largely be ignored, provided (of course) that, in this scenario, nominal president Trump continues to sign whatever regressive legislation the GOP congress sends his way.

This actually may be the optimal, and entirely predictable, “end game” to the Trump administration…and I use scare quotes because this would be the lamest of end games, one where we have to deal with this mentally ill moron and his idiotic tweets for half a decade (or more).

Of course, as I just said, this scenario requires a cuckolded (I got to use that term!) president Trump to sign whatever it is that the GOP sends him…should he start making waves and become too much of a bother, they House and Senate would just outright impeach him.

Seems like we may be going in that direction.

    • Ninja0980

I could see him yanking nominations to SCOTUS and elsewhere if that happens.

      • Paul David

Yes, and Trump would definitely threaten the GOP with going nuclear at the drop of a hat.

I mean, come on, if there is ANYONE who would take hostages and threaten the party establishment with “if I can’t get what I want no one can” it would be our moronic Boy Emperor.

That said, if he were impeached he would be a “loser” in his eyes and those of his idiotic folllowers…and that’s something he’s shown to be extremely scared of.

The GOP actually can leverage its ability to impeach him at the drop of a hat, coupled with his desire to continue to look like a “winner,” to get him to cooperate.

The idea would be, “you, Mr Trump, will sign whatever it is we want you to, and in return we, the GOP congress, will not impeach you and allow you to swagger around like you’re a winner, but this only works if you cooperate fully with what we want.”

That’s where i see this going if the administration will achieve any sort of stabilization over the next four years….

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

Trump might then say “Hah, you martyr me, I’ll whip up my followers to primary your asses!” He might actually want to be bounced off the job so he can always be the victim and start up his Trump TV channel. That’s a job that’s juicy with huge grift potential with a lot less work and potential to make him look shittier than he does in the annals of history.

          • Paul David

There are a dozen scenarios that could play out here.

My hypothesis is that, increasingly, we’re going to see the GOP say “sign what we want you to or we’ll impeach you,” and they will likely give him the added sweetener of “do what we want without question and you don’t get impeached, pluse we’ll let you swagger around and pretend you’re a ‘winner’ for four years.”

Since all Trump is interested in is performance and the adulation of his followers–remember, his whole campaign was an exercise in narcissism–this just might work.

He’s not interested in the presidency. Trump is interested in social dominance, that’s all he cares about, period. More specifically, he’s interested in the APPEARANCE of social dominance. If the GOP can “sell” him on having that appearance, he’ll do whatever they want…after all, he gets EXACTLY what he wants from that scenario.

    • Perhaps, but I think you’re neglecting a couple things. One is Donald thinks he has just about unlimited power — and while he doesn’t, he’s not going to act as if he’s restrained in any way from massive overreach. Like that hastily issued and patently illegal travel ban. His attitude has been “stop me if you can, if you dare”.

The other is his authority as head of the Executive branch, and all the many ways he and his goblin horde can fuck with the rest of the gov’t. Just look at how much public information — data WE paid for with our tax dollars — is being thrown into the Memory Hole. Campaign contributors want to run puppy mills and abuse show horses? Well, call the Human Society and ASPCA “animal rights extremists” and remove all that information. This shit is happening everywhere, and it’s a deeply authoritarian move.

In short, I’m not sure how he can be effectively ‘boxed in’ when so much power rests in the office of President.

He needs either to be impeached or removed under the 25th Amendment.

      • Paul David

The GOP will leverage (1) their ability to impeach him at the drop of a hat, and (2) his neverending desire to appear a “winner” to himself and his idiotic followers to box him in and make him cooperate.

The ultimatum will be, “you, Mr Trump, will sign whatever it is we put in front of you without fail and we, the GOP congress, will not impeach and will allow you to swagger around like a winner and waive your dick in whatever direction you choose to, so long as once the dick-waiving is over with, you sit your ass down in that chair in the Oval Office and sign the shit we send you.”

It’s the optimal outcome for Trump, since he gets to perform and continue to get the adulation of his mouth-breather followers, which is all he’s really interested in, and for the GOP too since they can ram through a whole host of legislation they could never get through in the past.

        • You make some good points there, but we have yet to see any indication the Congressional Republicans are going to do anything about the monster they created.

They themselves are an unruly bunch, and include in their ranks their own Tea Bagger / Trump supporters. ‘The GOP’ is itself not a monolithic entity, but comprised of several disparate groups with very different sets of policy priorities, and of course those groups’ members aren’t all in line either.

Basically, an ultimatum that can’t be delivered upon is an empty threat. Very likely some GOP members of the House and Senate are just fine with King Donald and wouldn’t vote to oust him…so that means Ryan and McConnell — if they even wanted to restrain Donald in any meaningful way — would need Dem cooperation. For that, concessions would need to be made.

The whole thing is a gigantic hairball and America’s the cat that can’t seem to vomit it up.

          • Paul David

            Very true!

Agree with this 100%. Trump is a CEO.

    • BobSF_94117

      • Paul David

Is it not obvious that “optimal” is contextual to what I described above?

        It is!

        • BobSF_94117

Oh, I understood the context. I’m just not convinced the GOP wouldn’t do more damage than the fool (assuming he doesn’t actually start a nuclear war).

Even the Neo Nazis they call the alt-right who aren’t technically part of the KKK have been snarling at each other over tactics and membership. I think that’s the one thing that will always be in our favor. When they do get power, they are a lot like Christians and schism because some members actually crave social legitimacy of some sort while others don’t give a frack.

Skinny Trump in Philippines has two new proposals, (1) to lower age of criminal responsibility to age 9 and (2) reimpose the death penalty, and no, they’re not mutually exclusive.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/13/philippine-bid-to-jail-nine-year-olds-is-a-great-child-violation-unicef-says

The current age of criminal responsibility in the Philippines is 15. President Rodrigo Duterte’s allies have been pushing to lower it, coupled with another draft bill that would restore the death penalty.

Politicians opposing the bills say their passing could lead to a situation in which a nine-year-old may be sentenced to death.

An augury of what a populist government can do six months after the presidential inaugural.

Evacuations in Sacramento Valley now at 160,000. Sacramento Bee website probably the go-to news source right now.

Beale AFB is uphill from Marysville. From the Sacramento Bee article:

Beale Air Force Base opens roads to evacuees, offers shelter

Beale Air Force announced that it will allow residents to travel across the base to evacuate to higher ground. Drivers can enter at the Doolittle Gate off Hammonton Smartsville Road or Schneider Gate off North Beale Road. They will then exit via the Grass Valley gate.

The base also has opened a shelter for 400 people at the Harris Fitness Center. Evacuees should park at Dragon Town and then transfer to a registration area via bus. …

It’s possible that the lake level is down far enough to relieve pressure, but there was considerable rain and snow fall in the Feather River watershed so it may still be weeks before it is less dangerous. The rain/snow season in California doesn’t ease off till April.

        • SoCalGal20

We’re supposed to get some more significant Pacific storms later in the week. Not sure if they’re expected to hit the Oroville area or not but probably.

          • coram nobis

These winter storm systems tend to bring rain or snow across all northern California. Next system due in late Wednesday. Ground is saturated in all watersheds so the runoff will be sooner rather than later.

          • Cuberly

They are, supposed to start late Wed and move through to Friday, a break on Sat, they larger storm on Sunday. But of course that forecast could change.

          • coram nobis

Pacific winter storms tend to affect all of the coastal states. They’re widespread.

        • Aye, it’s looking like the emergency spillway won’t collapse, not right now, but the local authorities are still worried about more incoming storms.

Some of the trouble is there’s debris interfering with the normal hydro turbine outlets, plus the undermining of the normal concrete overflow-spillway (which is still damaged, but they’re continuing to try to repair it). It does appear the erosion leading up to the emergency spillway has eased as water flow has slowed.

    • SoCalGal20

Lake levels have dropped enough that water is no longer going over the spillway. There will be a briefing at 10pm, so about 10 minutes.

If we were tin hatty bullshitters, we have the components of a semi-plausible conspiracy theory that goes like this:

Murdoch does the bidding of Putin to undermine the brain power of America and make it more susceptible to electoral chaos in exchange for something-something. This takes years but is extremely profitable. Murdoch uses Wendi as a go-between between Putin and himself. Putin finds a weak-willed narcissist in Trump to blackmail and recommends to Murdoch to pimp him as President through Faux News. Murdoch tells Ailes to have kid gloves regarding him. Wendi and Ivanka are go-betweens. Faux News relentlessly pimps Trump.

Putin is a fan of alt-right Neo Nazis so Bannon is cool with him. Putin and Tillerson are friends so they recommend to Trump to push him as SoS to push Exxon’s interests.

(I’m not saying that’s what really went down but damn if it wouldn’t make a great pot boiler.)

    • It’s looking like the worst case scenario has been averted for now. No longer flowing over the emergency spillway, so the erosion’s abated. If things remain relatively dry, they’ll have a few days to effect repairs on the turbine outlets and the regular concrete spillway.

I view this with alarm for several reasons. First, we can’t trust President “Manchurian Candidate” with state secrets and that is appalling, but we are also seeing our intelligence agencies decide that the president is a security risk. They are operating without the sanction of the President. Basically, they have gone rogue. This has profound implications beyond Trump. This is a possible threat to our democracy. While they may be on America’s side this time, what if they decide in the future that a Progressive President is a “Security Risk?” Who are they to decide this and where is their Constitutional mandate?

      • One impending disaster at a time, please.

The Votemaster’s summary of this shambles:

Former NSA Analyst: Spies Don’t Trust Trump

Donald Trump’s constant dissing of the intelligence agencies is beginning to have an effect—and not in a good way. John Schindler, a former NSA analyst, has written a damning piece clearly indicating that his contacts in the intelligence community are most unhappy with how things have gone in the first three weeks of the Trump administration. To start with, they find it very troubling that the head of the National Security Agency, Mike Flynn, discussed lifting the sanctions on Russia with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. and then lied about it to Vice President Mike Pence and everyone else. He also confirms that at least some of the information in the 35-page report former British spy Christopher Steele wrote about how Russia has compromising information about Trump is true.

Worst of all, though, is that the intelligence community is scared witless about how little the president cares about the President’s daily briefing and how much the White House leaks. The spy agencies are beginning to think: “Why give the president critical secret information if he just ignores it and it is likely to leak out?” The idea of the NSA, which provides most of the information, holding back information from the president because it doesn’t trust him is unprecedented and potentially harmful to the country if the president then makes decisions without knowing the facts. Schindler ends by saying sooner or later there will be an international crisis and “the White House will need the best intelligence possible to prevent war, possibly even nuclear war. It may not get the information it needs in that hour of crisis, and for that it has nobody to blame but itself.”

Like they are so afraid some important intelligence will be leaked. What they are doing is TREASON. There is no excuse. They are TRAITORS. They have an agenda. They are not working for We the People, let alone their “Commander in Chief” probably working for Soros. Of all the traitors in history who have been executed for their crimes, none of them deserved punishment as much as these right here. But since main stream media, also traitors, are backing them up, there is no chance they will be denounced, let alone called out or held responsible until after America is destroyed
