OHIO: Toledo City Council Unanimously Bans Ex-Gay Torture And Makes Gender Identity A Protected Class

The Toledo Blade reports:

The Toledo City Council unanimously approved a ban on conversion therapy today while also making gender identity a protected class in the city. The proposal was lauded earlier in the day during a public hearing by supporters but also criticized by clergymen who asked if they would be prohibited from counseling people who are gay. Conversion therapy, which is designed to change a person’s sexual orientation, has been discredited by the medical establishment and denounced by gay and transgender groups. The proposed law change, which states β€œno mental health provider shall engage in sexual orientation or gender identity change efforts with any person,” would make it a misdemeanor of the fourth degree to provide the therapy. Each day in violation would be a separate offense β€” each with a maximum fine of $250.

The city council yesterday also unanimously approved a resolution declaring Toledo to be a welcoming place for refugees.

    Common decency. In Ohio. Whodathunk.

    • Todd20036

Nearly word for word I was going to make the same comment

      “Sanity in Ohio. Who knew?”

      • boatboy_srq

To be fair, I do know decent people FROM Ohio, and a few decent people IN Ohio (including the fiance), but there’s so much cr#p that send to spew from there: Boehner, Blackwell, et al…

          There’s good and bad everywhere.

The best! From what I’ve read.

          • Rex

            Tell your friends.

          • TuuxKabin

Uh, mind if I use a sticky marker, or wha’ ev’a they’re called, to spread the news?

  • Boreal

How long before the Ohio legislature and Kasich pull a Charlotte move?

    • Todd20036

If they do, then we boycott Ohio. There’s a reason NC’s economy is slowed. And we are that reason

      • JaniceInToronto

There’s a product that I really want for my motorcycle that was invented and produced by a guy in NC. I contacted him and explained that I cannot buy it til HB2 is repealed. He said he understood and also hoped that the bill would be repealed soon.

        So? How long?

    • Gustav2

Do you have an egg timer?

  • Baltimatt

    Holy Toledo!

    • Bob Conti

Thanks, I was ready to write that but figured somebody else would’ve done so first. As an aside, I had to go Amtrak from Rochester to Toledo to finally get a flight back to California after a blizzard (everyone in Rochester said, no worries, we can handle snow here… they couldn’t). It has a beautiful train station.

  • Tawreos
    • Rex

Ashamed of my state for this. What a weasel that Josh Mandel is.

      • Gustav2

He could be our next governor.

        • Rex

          Lord help us.

        • fuzzybits

          NOOOO!

          • Gustav2

            DITTO!

          • Gustav2

Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor is also thinking of running. But I don’t know how you do that when your top staffers were getting regular pay for days they were not in the office or accompanying Taylor.

    • Gustav2

What Columbus does is have all the ‘sanctuary city’ policies in place, but it doesn’t call itself a ‘sanctuary city.’ They think places like Cincinnati are asking for trouble with the label.

  • Rex

Proud of a city that has the decency to protect it’s citizens.
Ashamed of a country where this has to be done.

    • another_steve

Helping protect the public’s health is a core role of government, but there’s no unanimity as to what that means. Here in the states, cigarettes — a proven cause of disease and death — are still legal products. Tanning salons, also a health hazard, are legal.

No surprise whatsoever that “conversion therapy” hasn’t been outlawed nationwide.

  • crewman

Brilliant! I will say this, it puts Toldeo on my radar in a way it never has been. I have a really open, positive attitude towards Toledo and hope to see more mentions in the news and on TV shows in the future.

  • Oh’behr

Yay! Good news. Thank you, Toledo, Ohio.

Well, blow my skirt up. That’s good news! Who’d have thought?

    OT
Trump LIVE speaking to a police union and getting zero response to his (pause here for applause) lines. Had to interject “Do you agree with me?” Response: tepid golf claps.

Jeez, turn it on. I think he’s visibly shaken his audience is so asleep and not RAH RAH RAHing.

    • Earl

He doesn’t look that shaken, sounds like he’s spewing more bullshit and trying to suck them off without filling his mouth.

      • Texndoc

I think he expected wild cheering to drive to the public what he’s spewing. He looked pissed to me.

    • David F.

Probably because he stiffed the companies that hired his press conference cheerleaders. The same way he stiffs any company that does work for him. You can’t get fake cheerleaders for free.

      • Robincho

With DrΓΌmpf, “stiff” is always a verb, never an adjective…

Perhaps there’s a role for JEB?!?! after all. [Please clap.]

We got on the PreCheq program as a safeguard….It’s a small resort owned by Florian and Eric on an island with only 700 inhabitants, but there’s actually a dive shop so we’re planning some shark dives. It’s 12 degrees here right now; we’re going to melt.

        • The_Wretched

I’d love to go, that sounds amazing.

Sorry to hear you’re going to the land of sunburns and brown people.
Come to Canada for your vacation this year. We have just had a beaut of an ice storm, everything is sparkling with ice. The cars are crashing and the power lines are snapping.

Quite the experience. You could see some old sunny beach any day, but a good ice storm is a rare event.

As for the clergyman fretting over an exemption from this new law I just have one comment, it is your fault and the fault of the homophobic society that you created and reinforce that brings broken LGBT people to you to begin with. Try this…..Tell those who come to you that they are WONDERFUL just the way they are. Tell your congregation to love, accept and cherish their LGBT children, grandchildren, nieces, nephew, brothers, sisters, cousins. If you’d do that you could stop fretting.

    • boatboy_srq

Requires love, compassion, and forgiveness. All of which are expressly forbidden in 2 Mammon 4:19-99.

    • Dean

This should be posted everywhere that gay children can see it. Then plaster it inside every window in the nation. This is the truth distilled into one crystal clear paragraph.

It’ll never happen. Christiansβ„’ have to have some group to push against. It’s part of their holy insecurity, considering they have a God so insecure that he needs constant praise from everybody.

That’s great of Toledo…but we know the republicans control Ohio. It’s only a matter of time before they make a State law banning it.

The bigger cities in Ohio, Akron, Toledo, Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland are very liberal. They just make many people forget, the rest of the state is cows, and the gerrymandering is pretty bad.

    • NancyP

Corn and soybeans as well. And you have to remember, it was a long hard slog in Cincinnati – but one of its residents was the lead plaintiff on the marriage case – Obergefell.

    • clay

Toledo is also one of the largest centers of Arab-Americans and Muslim-Americans. Something to remember when the right-wing starts bringing up “throwing you off roofs” to back their anti-First Amendment travel ban.

There’s also Athens and Yellow Springs.

      • fuzzybits

And Yellow Springs enacted a gay rights ordinance in 1979.

    • BudClark

I wouldn’t count Cincinnati as liberal … I lived there 1969-1976 … it was NOT a pleasant experience for a gay man.

  • NancyP

Beat me to it. Holy Toledo! Having lived there for four years (1980-1984), I am impressed at the progress. Time to toast the city at my local Lebanese restaurant. (yes, all those things Klinger mentioned on MASH were real – there is a AAA baseball team called the Mudhens, there are Hungarian hot dogs, and there are a lot of Lebanese-descended people).

    • BudClark

Slightly Off-Topic — For musicians / architecture buffs, Toledo also has Holy Rosary Cathedral, one of the most beautiful in the Midwest, and home of a restored SPECTACULAR 4-manual E.M. Skinner organ in GLORIOUS acoustics. I believe it’s also Toledo (?) that has a restored Skinner PLAYER organ in their art museum … yep, here it is … Thompson-Allen is the premier restorer of Skinner organs in this country, and takes care of the huge Skinner in Yale’s War Memorial Auditorium.

Toledo has many protections for people in the gay and transgender communities, but they are REALLY hard to enforce. AND, the protections stop at the city limits.

(St. James Health Club owned by Duke Wheeler, Christmas Trees, doesn’t take a shining to gay people.)

  • No teen or kid should be forced into this “therapy”, and I’ve always questioned the efficacy of this stuff. The question is whether adults who choose to attempt this treatment should have the ability to do so.

If there are bisexual men or women who want to try to deemphasize any homosexual tendencies for their own reasons, how is it anyone else’s business but theirs?

Adults should be free to determine their own genders, their own identities .. but not if we disagree with it? Not exactly ideologically consistent.

In terms of gender identity being a protected class, I hope this means guarantees of legal protections in employment and housing. These are fundamental rights that thus far haven’t been extended.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

It’s good to see that in an America suffering the ill of effects of T.I.M., there are still large pockets of decency, kindness and humanity. Well done Toledo.
