Thousands Attend Stonewall Solidarity Rally [VIDEO]

NY1 reports:

Carrying signs with messages such as “LGBT stands by our Muslim brothers and sisters,” thousands flooded Greenwich Village for a solidarity rally to show support for immigrants, refugees, and others impacted by Donald Trump’s travel ban on seven mostly-Muslim countries.

“Were going to stand up and say all of the things that Trump has put forward,” one protester said. “We’re going to stand for all the people he’s already not welcomed to this country, and we’re going to continue to say that this is not going to be OK.”

The rally was organized by City Councilman Corey Johnson and was held outside the historic Stonewall Inn, the country’s first national monument dedicated to LGBT history, and a site widely regarded as the birthplace of the gay rights movement.

“We wanted to stand here as a community to say if one minority is under attack — if one vulnerable person is under attack — then all of us are under attack,” Johnson said at the rally. A long list of performers, elected officials, and speakers also voiced their concerns about LGBT rights and say they’ll be watching the Trump Administration closely.

I took a few photos of my favorite signs. See them below.

That required BALLS! Thank you, Der Spiegel!!

      • Nah. The Germans say what they actually think. It takes some getting used to, but after awhile you learn to appreciate people actually saying what they mean. They were pretty harsh about W back when I lived there. This doesn’t surprise me, but it is flawlessly executed. They aren’t afraid of Trump and have no reason to be. The Europeans hated W, loved Obama and are stunned that we elected someone even worse than W.

Queue Milo Slopabottomus saying “fags should be grateful they don’t live in Muslim counties” in 3…2…1…

    • Ninja0980

Yup, even though religious folks here want to make us second class citizens in every way, we should be grateful we aren’t being murdered and accept everything else according to Milo and company.
How about a nice fuck no instead?

      • Trevor Brown

He doesn’t realize he’s a “house gay”; he’s at best, a useful idiot for the Nazi party. He thinks that by sucking up to them and licking their boots they’ll reward him and that makes him better than us.

        • Xiao Ai

He’s also a useful Nazi for the Idiot Party.

          • Steverino

An asshole for the Animus Party.

Someone paid top dollar for him at the Gay Friends ‘R’ Us emporium.

    • grada3784

Christians should be grateful they don’t live in Muslim countries.

    • Yes, and then refuse entry to gay people trying to leave those very countries.

  • david fairfield

    Awesome. Humbling. Thank you!!!

The protests are already being dismissed by our local Libertarian.Republican newspaper:

The Inside Story: Not every protest meets newsworthy test

“The Columbus metro area is home to more than 2 million people in 10 central Ohio counties. Franklin County alone is home to an estimated 1.3 million people. That means that more than 1.2 million people in our primary market were not protesting on Monday night.”–inside-story-not-every-protest-meets-newsworthy-test

    • Acronym Jim

Yeah, 2,000 people showing up to the third protest in a single day isn’t “news.” Got it.

Also, is that the new maths?

    OT: Our friend at work:

US cardinal Raymond Burke stokes papal tensions by meeting nationalist in Rome

Pope Francis’s harshest critics are aligning themselves with Trump and his acolytes around the world, including Matteo Salvini

“A powerful American cardinal who is engaged in a bitter feud with Pope
Francis has met Matteo Salvini, the rightwing Italian nationalist who is
a staunch supporter of Donald Trump and has praised Benito Mussolini.”

Frankie needs to discipline that fucking fascist immediately.

He’ll get scolded over tea. The most horrific dressdown since Bowling Green.

The RCC hopping back on the fascist bandwagon.

      • Bomer

Honestly I don’t think it ever got off it.

It stepped off under John XXIII to get some gum, then got right back on again.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m no fan of the Pope and his org but I hope he crushes the hell out of Burke.

    • ChrisMorley

He’s very pissed at Pope Francis who last week dumped him into the bin of irrelevance when he appointed a new liaison between himself and the Knights of Malta which Burke heads.
Cardinal Burke is now throwing a massive tantrum, flexing his fascist muscles, and swamping Rome in anonymous posters dissing pope Francis.

Gays Against Guns were on the 7th Avenue side of the Duplex holding a singalong, taking songs like “This Land Is Your Land” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and giving a more current twist on the lyrics. They were handing out lyric sheets and quite a few people were having a blast. Nice, old school, street protesting. Great turnout and a fabulous afternoon.

No hay problema. It’s the message that counts, and that one counts!

Do not go gentle into that goodnight, RAGE, RAGE, against the dying of the light.

Wonderful day, to be crammed up into the streets of the West Village yesterday at such an historic crossroad, with so many thousands of eager demonstrators. Best speech in my opinion was by a fiery Christine Quinn.
Was it Omar Sharif Jr. who stumbled when saying “in four more years” and said “four more weeks” instead? The crowd loved it, and took up the chant “Four More Weeks”.
But it was really really cold. It caused people to decamp after a while, my boyfriend and I had were right up front but had to leave after 2 hours, our feets were froze.

    • TuuxKabin

Thank you M for being there. El HubCap and I don’t have social media and heard about it via email from friends in California asking if we went. Thanks again!

      • M Jackson

You are very welcome. I’m just a whisper on social media, I asked the question here early in the week, when we thought an anti-LGBT order was coming, “when is a rally on this going to take place” and got my answer and a link to the website from another Joe reader. They are some of the best.
