REPORT: Ivanka Trump And Jared Kushner Worked To Convince Trump Not To Revoke Obama’s LGBT Order

Politico reports:

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump helped lead the charge to scuttle a draft executive order that would have overturned Obama-era enforcements of LGBT rights in the workplace, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told POLITICO.

A draft executive order on LGBT rights that outlines how to roll back former President Barack Obama’s protections and expand legal exemptions based on religious beliefs has been circulating among journalists and worried progressive groups this week.

But two sources close to Kushner and Ivanka Trump, who have a record of supporting gay rights, said the couple favored putting out a clear statement from the president, promising to uphold the 2014 Obama executive order and stopping the momentum for the turnaround in its tracks.

On Tuesday night, the White House released a statement saying that “President Donald J. Trump is determined to protect the rights of all Americans, including the LGBTQ community. President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of LGBTQ rights, just as he was throughout the election.”

As the above-linked article notes, hate group leaders such as Tony Perkins remain confident that a separate “religious liberty” order will be issued.

  • Sean Williams

Oh thank you Miss Ivanka, thank you so much for saving us poor gay folk.

We sure do appreciate you not taking our rights away. /s

    • pj

yeah really. we are supposed to be gratetful you are babysitting that moron in the white house. bitch turn your back for 15 minutes and we wil be in camps.

  • credit where credit is due and all of that.
but still, be beware as fuck.

    • bambinoitaliano

No credit at all, it’s all business decision just as any corporations should know which side of the bread to butter.

      • Gerry Fisher

And I’ll bet that they’re banking on being able to hold the fort on employment protections while letting the “religious freedom” and SCOTUS nominations sail on through.

    • Randy Left Brooklyn

I agree that we need to be on guard. Trump has no history of attacking LGBT people, but he does have a long history of rewarding people who stood by him, and the evangelicals have really been milking that.

We do need to watch him, but he stays acutely aware of political currents, and we may be one of the few groups he does not clobber.

      • Nowhereman

I have no doubt that he’ll do an EO on “religious freedom”, because nothing says America and Freedom like bashing gay people. And how is it that he can strip out rights with an EO now? Can he write one to counter that pesky 19th amendment?

        • Randy Left Brooklyn

Did you ever think that the country has changed over the years, even if your perception of it hasn’t? The country now polls in favor of marriage equality and gay people have made great strides in a plethora of ways. One thing he is aware of is how to ride and how to shape the public opinion tides.

He will undoubtedly throw the evangelicals a bone on this, but it won’t be much. He didn’t run on an anti-gay platform and this isn’t an issue for him. Some of his appointees will also do some nasty but minor things as well.

The reason he can undo some rights is because we got an executive order rather than an actual law passed. He is undoing it in the same way it got created.

The 19th amendment is about women’s right to vote. What do you think he would do with that?

        • AJD

He doesn’t need the EO because Congress will likely pass FADA, and he’ll happily sign it.

      • pablo

He’s someone who is swayed by the last person he spoke with. Ivanka is a better alternative to Steve Bannon.

      • Gerry Fisher

If it ever benefits him to clobber us, he will. And he’s clobbering those of us who are women and immigrants. He’s clobbering our neighbors.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

We stand together or we dont stand at all! The curtailing of due process and civil rights of one group will lead to more down the road

        • Randy Left Brooklyn

I agree he is, and that is what we should protest.

    • Kim K’s Kute Koochy✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Yup! As disgusted as I am, having those 2 around Tramp to off-set Bannon’s & Pence’ antiquated views is an advantage. They might be greedy but not crazy

      • Nowhereman

He’ll just issue an order between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday. Easy peasy!

        • TampaDink

They had no problem breaking with their sincerely held religious beliefs & customs 2 weeks ago tonight. Those inaugural balls happened after sunset.

          • westford

No, no. One can go the the ball on Shabbes, BUT one must get one’s ball gown or tux on before sunset, walk (depending how frum you are) there, not switch on or off any lights, nor press any elevator buttons (a Shabbes goy can do that for you) or sign any executive orders written for you by your Shabbes goyum or make any business deals. That would be work.

For those unfamiliar with the practice, a Shabbes goy is NOT a slave. He (or possibly she) gets paid for his work. Also, as Shabbes is a time for celebration – as opposed to work – a ball sounds just right. You should pray during the ball, but hock mir nicht a chinik.

As a non believer, I am thankful for this very tenuous crack of light for gay folks in what otherwise is a very dark situation. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Also, the Kushners apparently don’t have much influence on his other terrible executive decisions.

          • TampaDink

Too many rules for me to attempt to try to follow.

        • Kim K’s Kute Koochy✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

He won’t even dare bc first lady Ivanka wouldn’t give him any golden showers anymore!

    • Rand503

I really do not like the fact that my RIGHTS are dependent upon a blonde bimbo and her husband. Yes, I am thank ful we still have them, but we are just one bad haircut away from having them taken away.

    • It’s really scary that these two appear to be the only sane people in the entire administration.

  • bambinoitaliano

Going up against the LBGT is bad for business. Ivanka should be crying to daddy now that her lines of fashion is being drop by Nordstrom.

  • Gigi

So she’s not as cruel and heartless as her father. Gtk.

  • missmobtown

We still ain’t gonna buy your shoes, Vanky.

  • AtticusP

    Well bless their hearts.

But, since both of them are devout orthodox Jews, neither of them will be available to hold the orange tornado back from sundown tonight until sundown tomorrow.

And if President Bannon got really loaded today, we will probably be at war with Canada by tomorrow.

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

      Ehhh…fuck em

    • Frostbite

      Blame Canada.. Blame Canada..

      • AtticusP

Ha ha. I have been meaning to buy the South Park Movie on iTunes for a while now. Your post reminded me of that, and I am about to watch it now. Thanks!

          “Eh Philip, pull my finger!”

  • Sam_Handwich
  • DonnaLee

So we have to hope that the President’s daughter will talk him out of the stupid shit that Bannon and Pence want him to do? I can’t believe I’m looking forward to Trump taking a vacation, so we can all take a deep breath again.

    • TampaDink

I can’t believe that I’m looking forward to him not taking a breath again. Oh wait, yes I can.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

While this ONE act of human decency is nice, it does not even begin to erase all the other ugly these two are enabling.

  • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

Fuck them. I stand with all people who are being scapegoated by the orange pig.

    • Lazycrockett

Yep we have to all united together. Every cause is our cause.

  • melllt

Good for them, I guess. But the alternative was to have a huge women’s protest his first weekend, a protest against his actions against Muslims the second, and another protest his third because of his actions against the gays.

    • Tawreos

He probably believes they aren’t protesting, they are just there to show their love

    • ralphb

There is one this Saturday at Stonewall. Takes place from 2-4.

  • MikeBx2

I do not believe that Trump will not give into the religious bigots who are his strongest supporters. He will support allowing them to discriminate.

    • bambinoitaliano

With Trump is a toss up between his love for money versus his petty ultra sensitive ego. It’s never about any political affiliation. He is highly unstable depending on which side of the bed he woke up in. And with great manipulative skills of people he surrounded himself with, he can easily steer towards a certain direction.

It was horrendous, all those needless strikes!

          • Anastasia Beaverhousen

And the holes!! The bowling balls had holes in them from the terrorist attacks.

          • Mikey

they shouldn’t have the right to strike. it’s bad for business.. all those strikes will put hard-working bowling alley owners out of business!

has Federick Douglass arrested the rest of their gang yet?

Seems like Ivanka is desperately trying to keep her brand afloat. Change your last name, you and your husband cut all ties to your father, and consistently speak out against him and then we can talk, until then it’s all just a bunch of bullshit.

    • Jerry Kott

Since his kids grew up and now live in a bubble, they are beginning to smell what we smell. Her brands has been dropped from Nordstroms and I read where Neiman’s has cleaned it’s web site of her jewelry. The Trumps kids were raised to believe that dollars and cents are the only things that matter. Being in Fashion in NYC isn’t the place to start picking fights with LGBT folks. I suspect they are feeling the heat and have Gay associates and may have rattled her father’s cage. Who knows.

it is Friday and I suspect it will be a Red Meatless Friday as LGBT topics go but the day isn’t over.

      • Treant

It takes a lot of stench to penetrate a good bubble. Ask Glinda, she knows.

      • Gustav2

Of course the younger Trumps would try to stop the anti-gay EO. They, especially Ivanka, are involved rebranding the Trump hotels into something Next Gen and Millennials would like. This EO would not help.

Follow the money, lol. especially with a Trump.

Good point. I’ve noticed a few comments mentioning them adhering to their religious custom regarding the Sabbath….funny how that didn’t seem to keep them away from a couple of fancy parties 2 weeks ago tonight.

          • Treant

They got “special dispensation” to attend those parties.

Look, I get that it can sometimes be required. When in the hospital, for instance, one can’t turn off the machines and state changes on pumps are required. Use of a cell phone for life and death circumstances (or ones that could become that)? Fine. Need a nebulizer? Not a problem.

Party? Get your ass home and pray, your party is supposed to be less important than your beliefs.

    Interesting.

So we in the gay community will be oppressed under the Trump administration if/when the Happy Clappers can sneak something through, or when Ivanka/Jared lose out to Pence and his religionists.

Interesting…and yet another way the Trump administration is a profile in leadership.

  • Gustav2

I will believe it when I see Tony Perkins’ SADZ.

  • Ninja0980

No one could look that terrible…..except Ms. Conjob herself.

  • Cackalaquiano

This administration. Who the hell knows how to deal with it.

    • pj

the russians stole the election for him. thank them for having to deal with him

  • Boreal

Until some other way to fuck us all comes along.

  • disqus_Qm7Y1t9k8U

These two aren’t morons. They knew that Daddy would have a full-scale youth rebellion on his hands if he issued that order.

  • IamM

Definitely document that for reference when they get to your sentencing phase at The Hague kids.

  • Robert Anthony

He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t on this one. #delicious

  • Capritaur

I cannot fault Ivanka and Jared for wanting to protect LGBT rights. However, this is not how the government is supposed work and it is still not normal.

  • AtticusP

    OT/: I haven’t seen OIKOS around lately.

Have I just not been noticing, or has he not been posting?

    Does anyone know?

    Thanks!

    • Lumpy Gaga

New name. Same old blue wolf avatar.

    • M Jackson

Yes, I still see Oikos every day.

      • AtticusP

Lumpy Gaga said that he’s posting under another name.

I have very likely been upvoting his posts without even knowing that he was posting them.

        • -M-

Boreal is the new name. Pretty sure he was commenting on earlier threads today.

          • -M-

In fact, he’s on the unemployment numbers thread now.

  • Pete

I thought that it is resulting from Trump getting a postcard from Peter Thiel from New Zealand asking him to chill. Our was it really Chris Barron + Jimmy LaSalitvate and their irrelevant GOProud gang?

    WTF …. Honestly.WTF.

I don’t want help from Kushner and his Shiksa-bob.

      We have LGBTQ equality ?

When the fuck did that happen ?

      • Gigi

I live in Canada. We have it here.

  • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

This is only a pause, a mere delay. Bannon will convince shitgibbon to EO some heinous version of the RFDA, despite the kids’ begging, by telling him that signing it will make more people like him. Hopefully it causes a serious and permanent rift. I’d really enjoy that.

  • Michael

He said he would sign the First Amendment Defense Act, so what are they going to do when that comes up. Don’t trust them. Ever.

    • Halou

One thing that worries me about all this. Compared to the intentionally leaked EO draft and it’s wild provisions the so-called ‘First Amendment Defense Act’ looks positively restrained.
I suspect it was done to either frighten the LGBT community into silence with the threat of something more severe or to make us grateful for the fact that the president is not doing worse, like a slave thanking their master for only being forced to work 13 hours a day instead of the usual 14.

    • Tor

Why does a constitutional amendment need “defense?” An amendment is what it is and what it says. Period.

      • UrsusArctos

        But Jeeezus!

  • Ivanka is the only person in that whole family who isn’t a complete moron. She has fashion lines and knows she can’t continue in that work while pissing off the gays. But excuse me if I don’t throw her a fucking parade for having to do what shouldn’t need to be done at all.

  • boobert

The religious freedom laws in the works will pretty much kill Obama’s order anyway, unless ivanka does nice things for daddy.

    • Halou

      There goes another mattress.

  • sword

I am waiting for some “unknown” sources (hint…Breitbart, etc.) to start to slime Mr & Mrs Kushner,

    • houstonray

There were rumors of infidelity early on in the campaign but I noticed those disappeared quickly (Jared and a reporter as I recall). Hope they come back out.

  • Richard B

I read that draft of the executive order on religious liberties and it read as if Tony Perkins or someone like him had drafted it. If Ivanka and Jared blocked her narcissist father from signing Tony Perkin’s religious liberties executive order, that was a real win for our team.

  • Rand503

Great — so our rights hang in the balance depending on who has the president’s ear at the time. This is not encouraging. The religious right has four whole years to press their point, and they will NOT give up. Trump will cave sooner or later.

    • Reality.Bites

Frankly anyone who thinks that the biggest threat Trump poses is to LGBTQ rights just isn’t paying attention.

I’m not being a Bill Perdue “our rights are subservient to others” but I’m facing reality. The places where local governments, companies and individuals will take advantage of “religious defense acts” are ALREADY shitholes for us. And they’re going to remain shitholes for a fuck of a long time. Just ask the African-Americans who live there how much having full civil rights has helped them.

That Mississippi may become even more of a shithole than it already is doesn’t strike me as nearly as important as the chances of him starting a major war or tanking the world economy or making the US more of a terrorist target – and if you think Bush ignored intelligence reports, bear in mind that in the Trump administration Bush would be considered the brains of the operation, too smart to be trusted.

    • Everything hangs in the balance depending on who has the president’s ear at the time.

  • bkmn

    Don’t trust any of them.

  • Halou

Really? We’re going to be relying on Donald’s favorite “piece of ass” to protect us?

    http://antyweb.pl/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/yt3.jpg

  • Gerry Fisher

You don’t get points for not hitting us. And you don’t get points for failing to stop the religious freedom efforts. Just sayin’!

  • Jeffg166

    Consider the source.

  • Putin promised to loan his assassins to GOP congressional leaders if Jared and Ivanka try to talk daddy out of deregulating the financial sector.

  • Tor

Think of the fabulous party invitations they would lose.

  • Dot Beech

They obviously want to return to NYC some day.

    • DaddyRay

And don’t want to wonder if their food has been spit on

  • jarrettbrandon

    They are STILL garbage people.

  • Blake Jordan

Even if Donnie never signs a “religious freedom” EO, and vetoes every anti-LGBTQ+ bill sent his way by the GOP majority congress…

As long as he continues to attack Women, Muslims, Mexicans, the Environment, etcetera…

He is still an ENEMY of free people, and needs to be combatted continually!!!!!!

  • Hip Byroads

Supposedly protecting our rights while denying the rights of refugees, immigrants and Muslims they don’t like. “I don’t want them in here!” said Trump. Voilà! a poisoned chalice from which I shall not drink.

  • Scott

I can’t think why Kushner and Ivanka would care. Unless the only gays they ever met were white…

  • JCF

    Yay?

Ivanka has long known exactly what to do, to get Daddy to comply…

  • Jim

Well, I’m withholding my thanks until four years are up.

  • Michael McReavy

I agree with most who state that there is so much more to be done to protect and secure LGBT rights and the rights of others. Trump is a terrible, terrible person to be president. While Kushner and Ivanka are not my favourite people, if they are a moderating influence on that crazy old man and did something decent, why shit on them for it.

  • Blackfork

Let’s all remember this about Mike Pence:

    From http://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/fear-and-loathing-in-trumps-america

“…During his tenure in Congress, Mike Pence, as head of the Republican Study Committee, supported a constitutional amendment against gay marriage, opposed the repeal of the military ban on openly gay soldiers, and averred that “societal collapse was always brought about following an advent of the deterioration of marriage and family,” suggesting that gay families would operationalize such a disruption of the social order. He believed that being gay was a choice and said that keeping gays from marrying was simply “God’s idea.” He later proposed cutting funding for aids research and diverting the money to “ex-gay” therapy programs. As governor of Indiana, he championed and signed the anti-L.G.B.T.Q. Religious Restoration Freedom Act, which he softened only after considerable pressure from big business.”

  • Michael Hampton

They did something actually humane? How nice.
