White House: Trump Will Keep Obama’s Executive Order Protecting LGBT Employees Of Federal Contractors

Perhaps obviously, this doesn’t rule out other actions reportedly under consideration. The New York Times reports:

The White House said on Monday that President Trump would leave in place a 2014 Obama administration order that created new workplace protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

In a statement issued in response to growing questions about whether Mr. Trump would reverse the Obama order, the White House said the president was proud to embrace gay rights.

“President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of L.G.B.T.Q. rights, just as he was throughout the election,” the statement said. “The president is proud to have been the first ever G.O.P. nominee to mention the L.G.B.T.Q. community in his nomination acceptance speech, pledging then to protect the community from violence and oppression.”

The decision to keep the order, the statement added, was Mr. Trump’s. It uses stronger language than any Republican president has before in favor of equal legal protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, though that is not likely to quiet Mr. Trump’s critics on the left.

Earlier today the Washington Post reported that a draft executive order circulating among top Trump staffers “targets adoption rights among other issues.”

        Something WICKED This Way Comes…

        Sorry, can’t myself, book nerd

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

With apologies to Bradbury, but Trump and his goons are more evil than just wicked. Wicked has positive connotations like playfulness, whereas evil means amoral, cruel and malevolent. This little Dino claims reasonable poetic license.

          • Mikey

better apologize to Shakespeare first. The “something wicked” line comes from “Hamlet”, or as we like to call him in our household: “Omelette”

          • Dreaming Vertebrate

So many of our literary gems start with the great bard!

          • Oscarlating Wildely

“By the pricking of my thumbs something wicked this way comes” is from the three witches in Macbeth. It’s as he’s approaching and they are casting spells.

Edit to note: I saw the recent production at the Armory in NYC and although quite a spectacle, it had nothing on this trio. Those wenches scared the living shit out of me:

          • Diogenes Onionpants

Yes! That’s from the 2010 PBS “Great Performances” recording based on the Patrick Stewart / Kate Fleetwood theatrical run. Stewart is great, but Fleetwood is absolutely the most chilling, powerful Lady MacBeth I’ve ever seen–her performance is absolutely stunning.

(Nerd alert: For some reason they switched the order of the scenes in Act One, so the Weird Sisters / Nurses-from-hell appear a bit late; I was at first annoyed, thinking they’d been cut out, maybe de-mystified. Nope. There they are, and they went full Cronenberg.)

          • B Snow

            Chills/shivers.

          • Palmer

Sorry, wrong, it’s from MacBeth Act l, sc. l.

It’s part of the famous “Double, double, toil and trouble…” speech.

“Now by the pricking of my thumbs,
            Something wicked this way comes.
A drum, a drum, MacBeth doth come.”

          • Mikey

oops, my bad. well, at least I had the author right.

          • greenmanTN

Oh, I totally get it, it’s just my nerd brain kicking in, plus how great a title is that, “Something Wicked This Way Comes”?

The difference between words can be very fine. As an example I told a friend last year, “I really try never to be an asshole, but I can be a butthole quite frequently. The difference is subtle.” 😉

      • TimCA

How is a House member responsible for the actions of Senators from Ohio, Massachusetts or even California for that matter? Waters isn’t even House Whip much less Senate Whip. Are Sherrod Brown, Elizabeth Warren or Diane Feinstein somehow beyond reproach for their own decisions? Waters is doing what she’s supposed to be doing. If you have some specific criticism of Waters record or her actions in fighting the monsters in the White House well fine. But I think it’s terribly unfair that she should serve as a scapegoat for others shortcomings (whether real or imagined).

I have a novel suggestion. If you have a problem with either Brown, Warren or Feinstein call THEIR respective offices.

        Elizabeth Warren (202) 224-4543

        Sherrod Brown (202) 224-2315

Good. This is a distraction to give Trump something to bring up when the attack on us begins. He wants to give us a 1 and then take a 10,000,000.

The sad thing is the log cabin quislings will act like this is good and this is because of them.

While protections for any of us are good, it is important to remember that this is for a small number of us, and their attack will be against the majority of us. And it will be religious “freedom” excuses to not follow laws that will be done next.

This is ahead of that trial balloon for harming us.

      • Todd20036

The LCRs are lost. I really don’t care what they say, feel, or even do.
Even if they are carted off to “reeducation camps”, I’ll have no sympathy for them. They’re just Nazis who like buttseks.

And we need to be careful. Trump is learning to distract, and not just rant.

      • FAEN

Which means nothing. His ENTIRE cabinet is anti gay. All of his nominees for SCOTUS are anti gay. It’s blatantly obvious he doesn’t care about us or our rights. What happened to you that you continue to support this man.

And FYI-a lot of his supporters are NOT gay. I see you’re learning to lie like he does.

        • FAEN

Hillary Clinton is worse than ‘grab em by the pussy’? That’s stunning to hear from a woman. Not so much from a gay republican.

        • FAEN

His entire cabinet is a reflection of the President and you know it so enough with the double speak.

You cannot be pro gay if you vote for a man that wants to reverse Obergefell. You just aren’t.

          • NancyP

            Impeachment is higher priority.

          • Bill_Perdue

Democrats continuously refuse to pass ENDA or anti-discrimination bills when they have any chance of enactment. Much of this discussion would be moot if Democrats had spines, but they don’t.

Impeachment may happen but it’ll just result in a worse homophobe in the WH.

          • customartist

            What’s wrong with Democrats?

And notice these religious freedom groups are nowhere on this true issue of religious persecution. They can only be around for their perceived attack on Christians since they need that excuse to not follow laws they do not like.

Easier done than an act of Congress, at least on military personnel policy. All it takes is a DoD Instruction. Trouble is, SecDef Mattis may be disinclined to do such a thing. The armed services, Marines especially, went to a great deal of trouble to integrate and a mass expulsion of “out” personnel would create turmoil.

You may still see “religious freedom” language for Federal contractors or employees, which means that the workplace protections mean little if your co-workers’ or supervisors’ religious sensibilities are offended by your presence. It’ll put a big fat asterisk on due process of law and equal protection under the law.

“Democracy and liberty are often used today as synonyms, but they are not; indeed, there is an inevitable tension between them. Democracy means that people ought to have a meaningful say in the decisions that affect their lives …

Liberty, on the other hand, means that even in a democracy, the majority cannot be allowed to rule everything, that people have rights — are born with rights — that no majority should be able to take away.”
—Ira Glasser, Visions of Liberty: The Bill of Rights for All Americans (1991)

Of course the fact that Trump and his whole White House lie all the time, often differently from each other, means this isn’t trustworthy, but if they announced it so it’s picked up everywhere, it’s still a win amidst all the other threatened stuff that would make the Obama EO pretty toothless.

    • UrsusArctos

Sadly, gutting city/county/state protections won’t matter for most of the US. That is the status quo. Many of us have to live as legal 2nd class citizens. For the most part there’s no discrimination UNTIL there is, then it can be life or death. Undoing the protections for federal workers and military would be YUGE. It’ll be scary when he meets dignitaries from countries he hasn’t done business in… Think about that for a moment knowing how much Trump does NOT come from a politician/diplomatic background, but instead as a business man. What will he do/say/Tweet when he’s told, “No”?

        • johncAtl

He’s going to hear “no” a lot.

    OT, but interesting: http://jezebel.com/state-senator-demands-release-of-melania-trumps-immigra-1791810050

California State Senator Nancy Skinner of Berkeley—one of the many legislators who objects to President Trump’s targeted travel ban—has called for the release of Melania Trump’s immigration papers. This demand is tied to a more general protest against the executive order so toxic to the welfare of thousands of immigrants.

According to Politico, Skinner, together with Senate Pro Tem Kevin de Leon and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, insist that the White House provide this transparency in response to Trump’s threat that sanctuary cities will receive restricted funding.

If you’re a Californian it’s imperative that you contact Feinstein’s office. She was making noises last week as if she might actually vote for Sessions. I tried calling her offices in San Francisco, LA and San Diego as well as her Washington, DC office last week. Lines were always jammed. I never did reach anyone to register my view. If I’m unsuccessful again at reaching her office by phone first thing tomorrow AM, I have decided to go in person to her closest physical district office.

Kamala Harris has already indicated she’ll vote “no” last I heard. It can’t hurt to reinforce that view however, but whatever you do PLEASE CONTACT FEINSTEIN!!

      http://www.latimes.com/politics/essential/la-pol-ca-essential-politics-updates-protesters-descend-on-feinstein-s-home-1485828812-htmlstory.html

      • johncAtl

This may be unpopular, but I’d like to see Feinstein and Pelosi retire. At 83 and 76 they’re not helping the Democratic party nationally. We need some younger candidates running for office.

        • TimCA

I think Feinstein is next up for election in 2018. It is time for her to retire.

          • johncAtl

I agree. But maybe she wants to go for the Strom Thurmond lifetime achievement award.

          • TimCA

She’s actually very vigorous and quite mentally sharp. Nevertheless, I just don’t see another 6 year term for her as reasonable even with political considerations aside. She’d be in her early 90’s by the time that next term would end.

      • Kruhn

Actually, ask her to withhold consent, that’ll delay the nomination for four days. Let’s slow walk this bitch!

        • TimCA

      • johncAtl

Well, the first (Pence) and second (Ryan) replacements for him are already in place.

        • Treant

I’m honestly thinking Pence gets shoved out of the way as tainted goods. He’s not popular, and the Republicans sure don’t want a religious zealot running the government, it’ll cost them too much in 2018 and 2020.

          • johncAtl

They don’t know what to think anymore since Trump won. So they’ll do whatever the Koch brothers tell them to do.

          • Bryan

There needs to be a push to purge the entire new regime from government because of tainted elections – it’d be setting a new precedent but this is uncharted territory, we NEED a new rule to cover what the fuck just happened and make sure it never occurs again. It can’t be just a normal by rote impeachment, it’s got to be a massive public legal declaration that because the election was effectively fraudulent in favor of Trump, he’s impeached AND his cabinet and anybody found to be part of his cabal are removed automatically (he never “won”, ergo they were never “appointed”). It’s not hard, we just need someone with the cajones to do it.

          • Treant

It’s a great idea, but it won’t happen until at least 2018, if even then. Republicans control the House and Senate, and they don’t care how they won.

To what extent is there any federal role in adoption rights? I thought that was a state by state thing. Whatever sop they throw to the religious right, I don’t see how they can get states to pay for adoption services from entities like the Catholic church that prefer to discriminate.

    • johncAtl

It’s state, except when organizations accept Federal funding… which many do.

    • BobSF_94117

Adoptions are done by the state through social service organizations, many of which are religious. The money that funds those programs often includes federal dollars. Those dollars come with restrictions attached, including that the organizations cannot discriminate in adoption by same-sex couples.

The feds can’t force a state to pick a provider which discriminates, but if they say such discrimination can’t be used to pick a provider, the provider may win the contract because they have the better bid.

Maybe this is the work of Ivanka and Jared. The rumor is that the EO was done by Pence and that someone, possibly Jared, yelled at Trump that this was a bad idea and bad timing due to the fallout from this weekend. I skimmed the article. I would’ve kept my distance and used that as an excuse for why I couldn’t do doodoo with him.

As for being pushed out, Jared really should’ve tried to get rid of Bannon from the get-go instead of focusing so damn hard on humiliating and shitting all over Chris Christie.

      • Treant

Jared has no political experience, so he may not have noticed what most people already knew–Christie is a not very effective blowhard and too similar in personality to Trump to stay in his airspace for long regardless of what else happened.

Bannon is a threat, certainly, but the one he really wants to take down, IMHO, is Priebus. Rancid Pubis knows where all the bodies are buried. Bannon will overstep himself sooner rather than later and exit in disgrace.

A bit of forward looking fiction and current analysis from the Atlantic:

“It’s 2021, and president donald trump will shortly be sworn in for his second term. The 45th president has visibly aged over the past four years. He rests heavily on his daughter Ivanka’s arm during his infrequent public appearances.

Fortunately for him, he did not need to campaign hard for reelection. His has been a popular presidency: Big tax cuts, big spending, and big deficits have worked their familiar expansive magic. Wages have grown strongly in the Trump years, especially for men without a college degree, even if rising inflation is beginning to bite into the gains. The president’s supporters credit his restrictive immigration policies and his TrumpWorks infrastructure program.”

    Continued at:

    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/03/how-to-build-an-autocracy/513872/

    • Treant

That seems unlikely. So far, just in the first 8 days, the market has wobbled, his popularity has eroded from abysmally low starting numbers, and my mother has changed her registration from Republican to Democrat.

This is the same woman who’s been a Republican since 1960 when she registered to vote. This is a big fat deal as she’s certainly not alone.

As the pushback continues, Trump will destabilize, and thrash around looking for the Next Big Thing. He hasn’t got the attention span to sell TrumpWorks, or anything else, to the American people–and the Republicans would never vote for anything that smacks of socialism or public welfare anyway.

      • TimCA

You moron. That’s an anti-Trump piece, warning how Trump might use his power to move America down an illiberal, undemocratic path. You commented without even reading it, which kind of sums up the mentality at JMG.

        • JT

You’re the idiot. You’re totally ignorant of Frum’s history.

  • Blake Jordan

He (well his handlers anyway) knows FADA is on its way, which will more than cover all the bigoted needs of his evangelical supporters…

So he can dump the blame on congress, unlike his wall, muslim ban,… EOs.

    And / Or:

He is going to make an amendment to Pres. Obama’s EO giving religious exemption… effectly making the protections pointless, while not claiming that fact!!!

    • Gianni

Outwardly, the WH statement sounds nice, but there is something simmering underneath it. He promised to protect ‘religious freedom’ and I agree with you. It’ll become clearer to us as soon as the official ‘Directive’ is issued. I’m sure if Congress works it’s way to FADA, he won’t hesitate to sign it immediately.

      • He also pledged to remove ALL of the executive orders and he is not going to do that either. I tend to think FADA will not pass congress but if it does I would not be to shocked to see trump veto it.

        • Blake Jordan

But he promised by multiple times during his campaign that he would sign “religious freedom” into law…

He has lived up to his promises so far on the wall, muslim ban,… why would he now break his promise on a religious freedom law?

          • Because he and his closest advisers care about the wall, they care about the Muslim ban…these are things they want to see done. anti-gay legislation on the other hand is not something that they have as a personal vendetta but rather something he gave lip service to during the campaign and primary becasue he needed evangelical voters on board.

        • Gianni

I hope you’re right. However, some Republicans in the Senate will have to peel off and vote against it. If not, it becomes law.

    • Ninja0980

That and that anti-gay judges will soon be in the judiciary that will simply do the anti LGBT work for him.

    • kevin vincent

I don’t see FADA passing they literally need every single Republican to vote for it and basically Portman certainly won’t and doubtful Capito will (the same sort of law was rejected in WV) and they would need several Democrats which is unlikely since they would face an uproar

      • Blake Jordan

All they need is 50 votes and Pence to break the tie.

        • kevin vincent

Yeah but they only have 51 votes if say even 3 Republicans refuse to back it (Capito and Portman already being two) be difficult to get ther Democrats. FADA is REALLY unpopular we saw that in both Indiana and especially NC where it cost NC thr Governorship. With Senate as tight as it is and many Republicans already starting to freak out over Trump attaching their name on a potentially ruinous legislation is probably not on their priority.mskr no doubt Trump is not s friend but he was probably convinced to pick his own battles here.

          • Blake Jordan

Businesses, etcetera can boycott individual states, but how will they boycott the entire USA until FADA is repealed?

      • I agree also note that there was little interest in passing it in the GOP held congress before. I think increasingly you will see the GOP giving some level of lip service to the religious right on gay issues but not much beyond that. It has simply come to the point that there is little political gain for them for pushing anti-gay laws and lost’s to lose.

        • Blake Jordan

Because they knew Pres. Obama would veto it, but Donnie said he would sign it into law.

          • That did not stop them from voting for other things that Obama would veto or the Senate would not pass just to make a point. look at it this way, the religious right leadership did not warm to trump till he won, they tossed their support to Cruz and Cruz lost. But the religious right voters were voting for Trump. what this tells the GOP is that their base cares less and less about LGBT issues. I do not expect them to advance gay rights at all but trying to limit them does little to nothing for them politically.

  • JT
  • No More GOP.

He’s only looking for another way to fuck us all over. This man (using the term loosely) simply needs to be removed from office. By any legal means possible.

  • Wesinoregon

I won’t feel as though he is really for LGBTQ equality until he pushes ENDA to be passed by Congress.

Colbert tonight, w/ guest Leslie Mann on the “Family Meeting” segment (playing Dad & Mom):

Dad: “Well, Champ, I know you’re experiencing a lot of changes. You’ve got strange hair in places you never expected.”
    Mom: “Like the Oval Office.”

Bonus tip: ALWAYS watch the end credits on Colbert. Usually, you’ll get a punchy little coda to the show, as Colbert runs into the theater lobby. Tonight: a cardboard cut-out of Colbert’s “Cartoon Trump” character, holding a Disneyland-style sign “You Must Be This Christian to Enter the United States”.

Stephen took last week off, and SO missed him! Depend on our comedians, to get through this (IF we get through this }-x ).

The media keeps talking about a TRAVEL ban, it is NOT a travel ban. That is just a scrubbed up term for it so the media will get along with Trump.
The media needs to call it what it is A ban that primarily effects Muslims.
Or A MUSLIM BAN in short.

  • Mike in Texas

Maybe Trump cronies don’t need to have the Obama regulations lifted because whatever they’re planning will take care of them and be far worse.

  • Boreal

This is a smokescreen while they undermine other rights. Don’t listen to what they are saying, watch what they are doing.

    • Ninja0980

Don’t tell that to homocons like Richard Grenell and Guy Benson, the former actually insulting Joe on twitter last night.

      • Boreal

They are desperate after supporting their Fuhrer for him to be a popular figure and will latch onto anything to avoid being proven wrong.

  • Ernest Endevor

I remember the first time the Easter Bonnet went over a million. Because Trump was married at the time to Marla Maples, she went into the Will Rogers Follies and Trump wrote a check for something like $64,000 that put us over the top. He came out on stage and we all stood up to applaud. Of course, now I wonder if the check cleared. None of this makes any sense till one remembers that he’s bonkers.

    • BobSF_94117

He probably wrote you a check from his charity which had collected other people’s money.

      • Ernest Endevor

I think that was pre-foundation days. He wrote the check himself. I have no idea if it was honored.

  • Tomcat

The media has successfully BLEACHED the Muslim ban by now calling it a TRAVEL BAN. WHY?????? Who got to the media and told them to start calling it a travel ban. No one is stopped from traveling, unless they want to come back home or enter as a refugee. They are free to travel elsewhere, just not to the USA.
Demand the media call it what it is or the ban will stay the law.

    • Ribb Rotgut

It’s not technically a “Muslim ban”, because it doesn’t target all Muslims. It’s a “partial Muslim country travel ban”, because it bars citizens from those 7 countries from traveling into the United States.

  • Boreal

A new RFRA act will make Obama’s order moot. It will be coming soon while we are distracted by some other minor outrage.

  • BRLA

This news will upset the deplorables. Trump/Bannon will wait to try to get us with FADA legislation instead.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

I’ll believe it when I see it. Until then, I don’t believe one word that comes out of this lying liar’s mouth.

    • billbear1961

I couldn’t have said it better!

  • Important to note that action was introduced in the white house to issue an executive order overturning those protections and trump said no. The questions did not arise out of nothing, social conservatives put together such an action hoping that trump would approve it and he did not.

If there is one thing that Trump is not it is a theocrat. He is happy to get their support and will work with them and give them some things in exchange for that but not only is pushing their agenda not his thing but doing so would actually hurt his own interests. the religious rights war on sex does not stop with gay people and trump knows that.

    • BobSF_94117

Isn’t is sad and shocking that disorder and chaos inside the White House is now consoling…

      • True. what I think is telling is that there is a clash of different interest groups fighting for policy relevance and my belief…and we shall see how this plays out….is that the religious right is going to end up with a much smaller voice then they would like, at least on LGBT issues.

    • Ray Muñez

      I agree.

    • kevin vincent

I seriously don’t see it passing Senate the Republicans only have a 51/49 split there so they pretty much need every single Republican to vote for it very doubtful Portman will for obvious reasons and I saw plenty of senators can be ‘convinced’ not to do so by their corporate masters. Literally if say three Republicans refuse they need two Democrats which is unlikely. We have Portman possibly Capito (from what I hear she seems fair on LGBT rights which actually isn’t a big issue in WV actually they could care less they just want coal) and probably Republicans in vulnerable states

      • SDG

And if he just signs an Executive Order, and and says “FU” to the other 2/3 of the government?

^^^ this is important , it helps explain why President Bannon is creating chaos , a question I was asking last night

“Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power.
It only helps us when they (liberals) get it wrong.
When they’re blind to who we are and what we’re doing ” – Steve Bannon

“I’m a Leninist,” Steve Bannon told a writer for The Daily Beast, in late 2013. “Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that’s my goal, too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment.”

It wouldn’t make sense that Trump would trounce on gays, they stay at his hotels. Bad for bizz.

    • Leo Tallant

OK, I had to look this one up. It’s actually a thing:

The De Vaartkapoen sculpture is a permanent piece of street art reminiscent of work done by the infamous Banksy. It features a comical situation in which a lowly person has decided to trip a policeman. Located in Molenbeek, the De Vaartkapoen sculpture represents the idea of overthrowing authority.

Created by talented and imaginative sculptor Tom Frantzen, who was born and bred in Brussels, the De Vaartkapoen sculpture was loosely inspired by the artwork of cartoonist Hergé, who is most famous for being the creator of Tintin. Although quite childlike, it holds a huge significance not only for this city, but for many societies around the world who have had to deal with power-hungry individuals and insubordinate rebels.

Yaaasss kween! To recap: 1) no anti-gay executive order and 2) the executive order regarding immigration specifically mentions keeping out anyone who harms people based on their sexual orientation. So much for the Trump-As-Evil-Homophobe trope. This whole thing was a bunch of hype used to manipulate us.

    • JT

      Asswipe troll.

    • Tiger Quinn

“Us.” You’re not one of us. Fuck off.

  • Gerry Fisher

    1) we’ll get our turn to be thrown under the bus by him, and 2) Why has he pulled his punches, generally, when it comes to us? That’s so very unlike him.

    • billbear1961

You beat me to it–I was going to say he’ll get around to us after he savages everybody else.

I have no idea why he tends to make nice noises about us. It must have something to do with being from NYC. Then, again, he surrounds himself with maniacs who HATE OUR GUTS. And the judges he’ll stack the courts with will have it in for us, as well.

      • kanehau

One theme that seems to be repeating is that he is determined to make good on all his campaign promises to his base. He was ‘vaguely’ pro-gay in some of his comments – so I just see this as continuing to do what he has done in other areas.

I don’t for a second think he won’t hesitate to screw us once the base is distracted by other issues.

        • billbear1961

But he certainly hasn’t “drained the swamp,” anything but.

  • Gigi

Pence and the other Talibangelists in Trump’s inner circle won’t give up so easily. Their political careers depend on them rolling back rights for LGBT people. If they don’t succeed, they’re toast.

    • kevin vincent

The majority of Republicans care more for their corporate masters. Companies will NOT take well to this we saw that clearly in NC where the NCGOP are dead set on starving their state. Not to mention they weild significant influence. Like how Walmart if all places put pressure on Arkansas to not pass their Own FADA bill. Plus several Republicans would really not want their names attached to an extremely unpopular bill. They need 50 signatures they have 51 and only a handful refusing to sign would wind up killing it especially with them having such a narrow majority doubtful any Dems will sign it

  • Bj Lincoln

It’s only because 1.) We run the entertainment business and he likes to watch TV. 2.) The world of business in this country have made it very clear to Pence and McCrory they will not do business with haters. They are already pissed because of the Muslim ban. Every one of them can afford to shut down for a while to make their point clear. The last thing Drumpf is to piss off the business world knowing they support us.

  • John Caruso

People are saying that Trump and Bannon have very tiny penises. Would explain a lot. Sad!

    • Bryan

I also heard that whenever they orgasm, a tiny “bang’ sign pops out instead.

The sign is larger than the dick that spawned it. In Trump’s case I think it comes out when he urinates too, would explain his piss fetish

  • Sixfoursix

Please don’t believe for a minute that trump is doing anything positive for the LGBT community. He is pandering To the left as a response for last weeks disaster. He isn’t signing an executive order or pushing some sort of legislation….. in fact making a statement costs him nothing. Sign an EO and I may be convinced that he means business. Otherwise GTFO.

  • Phil in FLL

From the New York Times article:

“…though that is not likely to quiet Mr. Trump’s critics on the left.”

Beyond devastating understatement. It was devastating snark.

  • Tiger Quinn

And this is how my brother in law can look me in the eye and with all sincerity tell me that Trump is better for LGBTs than any other President before him. Seriously.

    • Gianpiero

We must have the same in-laws. And they will say it condescendingly and think they don’t have to listen to any other complaints or fears we might have about Trump.

    • Xuuths

Well, better than any GOP president.

    • Friday

Idiotic, that, of course, any chance of seeing if they can remember an attention span? 🙂

Here’s another explanation for the last 24 hours:

The source revealed that Bannon is conducting a “witch hunt” to find out who is leaking proposed executive orders to the press.

    http://www.rawstory.com/2017/01/he-is-running-a-cabal-white-house-leaker-says-steve-bannon-runs-shadow-nsc-with-no-paper-trail/

What better way to find out if and where the gay leaks are than to prepare some odious EO and then not issue it?

  • sword

Trump will hold off repealing LGBT rights until he gets his new “Scalia” replacement onto the Supreme Court. Then watch the 1950’s reset on human rights.
And for all of you LGBT Trump supporters…you are going to get what you deserve…unfortunately you are taking the rest of us with you.

“. . . in favor of equal legal protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, . . .”

Equal legal protections. Those are the words that bother me. Why not use the words “in favor of full equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people”?

If he is referring only to existing (law) legal protections, at the Federal level, nation wide, exactly what existing “legal protections” do we have? We know that we will get no additional legal (law) protections under this administration such as ENDA. The only 2 legal protections we do have are marriage equality and the right to serve in the Armed Forces. We can be sure that the repukes will try to chip away at these 2 rights in any way they can.

The Hate Crimes Act is enforced at the discretion of the Attorney General, and we know a repuke AG is going to say NO every time.

  • greenmanTN

All the better to hang us out to dry later.

  • customartist

    Let’s not be naive.
Trump, having learned his lesson with the clumsy Muslim Ban rollout, he now attempts to soften the almost certain to come attacks on LGBT Rights with a morsel of preliminary fluff affecting only government employees, as opposed to the general public. Fail.

Conservatives, soon after the election, let the cat out of the bag by announcing their strategy that since marriage was a done-deal, instead of fighting it, they should focus efforts on other areas where they might more effertively forestall LGBT progress, like Religious Freedom and Adoption, etc. They WILL attack us. The only question is when? Conservative’s are swarming around Trump, handing him legislation, and telling him that signing said legislation will A. Make him look good, and B. Get him re-elected. The vain egomaniac.

We need to continue to unite with the Women’s marchers and others
