Press Secretary Sean Spicer Dodges Question On Rumored Anti-LGBT Executive Order [VIDEO]

At today’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer dodged a question from Washington Blade reporter Chris Johnson about reports of an impending anti-LGBT executive order.

Johnson: “The LGBT group the Human Rights Campaign has issued a statement citing rumors that the president is about to sign a religious freedom executive order that would undermine LGBT rights. Is this the president considering any kind of religious freedom order?”

Spicer: “I’m not gonna get ahead of the executive orders that we may or may not issue. Uh, there’s a lot of executive orders, a lot of things that the president has talked about and will continue to fulfill. But we have nothing on that front right now.”

The exchange occurs at the 49:00 mark below.

    “LGBT rights”

I wish they would stop using that terminology. LGBTQ Equality.

    • safari

    • djcoastermark

I like using Equality. It is more direct and to the point. Not that I mind “rights.” A small point, nothing to quibble about. Kind of like Gay Marriage or Marriage Equality. So, easy enough for me -Equality it is.

    Religious exemptions?

Where are the exemptions for those who are on their 2nd or later marriage? I mean surely a sin so severe it made it to the Top Ten would be a concern of those who claim so loudly they’re a follower of God.

What I don’t get is how is the specifically targeting gay people WITHOUT it being unconstitutional?

    • The_Wretched

It’s not Constitutional to target gay people. That was the upshot of the obergefell line of cases. The 45th presidency doesn’t care about the rule of law, however.

      • Michael

Fortunately, for now, the courts do care about the Constitution.

  • John Ruff

As a nurse, I’m looking forward to telling Christian patients that I won’t be treating them…ever

    • Michael

One has to wonder how this “law” will be written because EVERY time these Evangelicals attempt to write laws to benefit their brand of religion it always ends up backfiring.

      • John Ruff

A lot of Muslims work in healthcare. I’m sure some of them will be delighted to use this law on a few people, mainly Trumpkins

        • NancyP

Muslim health care workers are too ethical to do this. The discrimination committed by Muslim docs is the same discrimination committed by non-Muslim docs. Do. You. Have. Insurance?

      • Frostbite

And that’s the thing. If they write the law and state it applies to Christians only it will be easier to defeat in the courts. If they leave it open for any religion they leave themselves open to being on the receiving end.

    • Millstone

“Just pray on that compound fracture.” There was an Onion headline a few years ago:

“Seventh Day Adventist Pharmacist Refuses to Fill Any Prescription”

      It was absurdly funny then.

    • WitlessProtection

THIS IS HOW TO RESIST! Just like when they demand public prayers at government meetings and the “Church of Satan” shows up to demand equal time, then all a sudden prayers are tabled. As soon as we start giving them a strong does of their own medicine, this idea will QUICKLY vanish.

    • Clive Johnson

“So, you were fine with throwing millions off of ready and affordable access to health care? You weren’t the least bit concerned that a diabetic would lose her eyesight because she couldn’t afford her metformin, or that millions of kids would have to forgo treatment? Dental work that could have prevented tooth loss? But your thought was that ‘It’s not my problem’? Or, ‘Why should I have to pay taxes for something others might use?’

This is all fuss we’ve been hearing about concerning your deeply held religious beliefs? This is what your faith amounts to?”

      • John Ruff

You realize, of course, that I was being facetious. However, if any anti-gay executive order is signed and if a Christian pisses me off, they’re no longer my patient.

    • coram nobis

      No.

One, your religious worldview probably isn’t favored in these executive orders and FADA bills, just theirs, and two, the whole point is not letting religious views of any sort supersede the rule of civil law.

  • Millstone

There’s been a lot of encouragement to support the ACLU lately, but look at the bug in the lower left corner of that screen. Trump is expected to cut funding to the NEA and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting soon. Support your local public broadcaster!

If you’re tapped out on giving, support PBS and NPR by patronizing their underwriters and tell them you appreciate their support of public broadcasting.

    Getting off my soapbox now.

  • Mark

The polls show 77% of americans identify as xtian…..but I doubt even half that number are nazi. Cheetolini is gonna get another big surprise….

  • This will make Evangelicals so proud! We know they won’t be ashamed to cheer an executive order that promotes bigotry and discrimination in the name of religion, because they aren’t the least bit ashamed of supporting a man who constantly spouts hatred of immigrants. Not to mention that he is a serial divorcee pussy grabber whose current wife is a former call girl “escort” who used to posed stark naked for money.

  • Lazycrockett
  • fine. pass this shit. pass all the anti gay stuff. i’ll just dream up a new religion, since you can’t quantify religious beliefs.

    • The_Wretched

Maybe. the HL decision was careful to use “sincerely held” as an adjective to religious belief. They then strongly hinted that only the conservative side of christian religions of the US qualify as something you could have sincere belief in. Everything else is open to asking questions.

      • Snarkaholic

      • coram nobis

Liberal religious organizations, UU, UCC, Reform et al had better step up and come to the prayer meeting with a bull horn. When Obama used executive orders to get things done, the Repubs claimed they were unconstitutional and were planning to sue over them. It’s funny how different their view of executive orders is now that someone who isn’t black and doesn’t have a D after his name is in the White House.

    • and to build off that…how many EO’s did Obama sign in the first 10 days?

      • Todd

That’s a great question so I went to look it up. From what I can find, Obama issued nine EOs from inauguration day through January 30. However, his EOs did not render wide swaths of people second class citizens or deny entry for refugees. They were things like closing Guantanamo and giving workers on federal contracts first rights of refusal when the contract moved to a new contractor.

        • Bad Tom

In other words, President Obama’s EOs were of
          far, far less scope.

          • The_Wretched

and were focused on freedom, transparency and accountability. Trump’s go the other way.

        • Jerry

And he issued total EOs far less than W or Clinton, but the most ever came from Reagan.

      • Elston

And how many of O’s EO’s resulted in mass protests?

  • vernacular100

First it was about Job’s now he is playing God!

  • Secure

Conservatives were the ones telling us that it was gay marriage they hated, not gay people. They repeatedly said this over & over. I guess it was all lies.

    • safari

And Michigan’s ban on same sex marriage and “any other union” wouldn’t cut off benefits, either.

    • Todd

But see if they get rid of gays they automatically get rid of gay marriage. We’re obviously just a means to end for them to take back marriage.

  • J Ascher

Such an EO will run afoul of the 1st Amendment.

    • coram nobis

Specifically, the 1st Amendment Establishment clause. All this chaos seems to be about one sectarian form of Christianity, whether it’s this order, the Muslim-only ban on immigration or the Planned Parenthood defunding. It’s tempting to bundle all these cases together for one big showdown at SCOTUS.

      Lemon v. Kurtzman, 403 U.S. 602 (1971) (the Lemon test)
      – The statute must have a secular legislative purpose.
      – The principal or primary effect of the statute must not advance nor inhibit religion.
      – The statute must not result in an “excessive government entanglement” with religion.

    • AdamTh

Most likely, but it will take a 1-1/2 to 2 year court fight to accomplish anything.

      • Bad Tom

        Emergency injunctions take effect immediately.

        • coram nobis

If obeyed. And even if so, “out” employees now will have to wait a year or two and see if the guillotine drops.

        • AdamTh

If you can get one, then the injunction may be stayed (allowing the EO to remain in effect) by a higher court while the suit grinds throught the court.

      • J Ascher

Right but as long as the order is being adjudicated, nothing should happen. If someone or agency attempts to enforce the order during that time, a contempt of court citation awaits.

  • CB

    Establishment clause? What establishment clause?

    • The_Wretched

Have you seen David Barton’s take on it? In short, the SOCAS was created at a time when there was only xtian religion there for it’s only there to protect christian interests including having a christian ‘voice’ in government.

      • coram nobis

The Framers had a different view even then.

What influence in fact have ecclesiastical establishments had on Civil Society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of Civil authority; in many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been seen the guardians of the liberties of the people. …
        — James Madison, Memorial and Remonstrance, 1784

        • The_Wretched

Barton’s views are entirely fictional and endlessly wrong.

          • coram nobis

It’s alternate facts, which keep getting spread. The Framers meant it about excluding religious dominance, consistently so. Here’s Jefferson on his intention with a 1786 religious freedom (i.e., disestablishment) bill:

“… they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of [the Virginia Act’s] protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo, and infidel of every denomination.”

    This is different.

If it’s an executive order it will have immediate effect, if not stayed, and if it affects Federal employees you’re going to see a lot of “out” employees going to be out of a job if their superiors or their co-workers start settling scores. It won’t be in every office or every department, which would make it even more capricious.
