Madeline Albright: I Will Register As A Muslim

The Hill reports:

Madeleine Albright, the first female Secretary of State, on Wednesday morning said she was prepared to stand in solidarity with Muslim Americans should President Donald Trump create registries and add further immigration regulations on the group.

Albright’s tweet echoes the sentiment of feminist icon Gloria Steinem, who at the Women’s March on Washington Saturday said she too would register as a Muslim if such a registry were required. “If you force Muslims to register, we will all register as Muslims,ā€ Steinem said during a speech at the Womenā€™s March on Washington, drawing raucous cheers.

Albright is all class and should be president.

Like all Democrats and Republicans who pretend to be against the mass murder of Arabs to steal thier land and resources, Albright is a hypocrite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0WDCYcUJ4o

Trump should be opposed when he murders Arabs and muslims, including US citizens, and when he jails US citizens using Obama’s NDAA provisions for the mass incarceration of civilian protesters without trial.

Trump is no more a fascist than the Clintons or Obama. They’ll all just ordinary, run of the mill right wing politicians who love wars, who are afraid of offending killer cops and who hate unions.

In 2012 Democrats and Republicans each got about 29% of the eligible vote.

          • Bill_Perdue

Elections don’t produce change, just more villainy by Democrats and Republicans.

“A new scientific study from Princeton researcher Martin Gilens and Northwestern researcher Benjamin I. Page has finally put some science behind the recently popular argument that the United States isn’t a democracy any more. And they’ve found that in fact, America is basically an oligarchy.

Comparing the preferences of the average American at the 50th percentile of income to what those Americans at the 90th percentile preferred, as well as the opinions of major lobbying or business groups, the researchers found out that the government followed the directives set forth by the latter two much more often. It’s beyond alarming.

As Gilens and Page write, ‘the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.’ In other words, their statistics say your opinion literally does not matter.” https://mic.com/articles/87719/princeton-concludes-what-kind-of-government-america-really-has-and-it-s-not-a-democracy#.JFsaGXuFO

          • TimCA

Irrelevancy describes those who have abdicated real practical electoral politics. I don’t consider the monster sitting in the White House as irrelevant. What he intends to do and the very real lives he will affect are not irrelevant. The choice of who has access to this country’s nuclear weapons is hardly irrelevant. Anyway, I won’t bother to reargue again the points we’ve discussed over the last 8 years on this site. I hope that your railroad retirement will cover any possible future cuts to your social security or medicare benefits and I mean that sincerely. However there are a lot of people out there for whom this is not irrelevant. There are many people out there for whom this may be a literal life and death issue.

          • Bill_Perdue

Democrats = Republicans. You both support wars of aggression, attacks on the standard of living of working people and racism, especially border racism.

That makes you both irrelevant. You’re the new Whigs and the working class is waiting for John Brown to shake things up.

          • KarenAtFOH

Some time before the election, Bill posted a link to a socialist candidate, whose name I can’t remember offhand, suggesting that we vote for him in lieu of the Rep and Dem choices. I went and checked him out, and he had a nicely thought out socialist platform. I don’t know Bill, if you ever revealed whether or not you voted for him, and that is of course, your own personal information. I ended up voting for Hillary, not because she is perfect, but because Trump is far more evil by comparison.

          • Bill_Perdue

Lesser evilism has been producing more and more evil since the Great Betrayal of 1876.

          • Robincho

I’ve missed that as I’m not here everyday nor can I read every comment. • Bill_Perdue

      • gaymex1

        Same here.

      • Kate

It’s not (and has never been) adherents to any religion – rather, individuals from specific countries. If you’re not from one of those countries, you would be unable to register, and if you were, you would have been automatically registered.

It’s going to largely be a moot point, though, as Trump is simply denying immigration from those countries.

        • MaryJOGrady

So Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem and many others are speaking out about nothing?

          • danolgb

I did too. I now block them as soon as they show their true colors. That way I don’t accidentally read them, or feel compelled to give them a pithy reply.

          • Kate

They are picking the wrong battle to fight. Trump is going to start discriminating on the basis of national origin (and possibly travel history), so if they want to fight something, they should fight that.

The “muslim registry” wasn’t one. It’s dead, and the focus was on countries of origins. Trump’s speeding up universal biometric entry and exit screening, which covers all foreigners (muslim or not), to make it easier to know who’s still in the country illegally, which was a lot of the point of the high-risk country registry in the first place.

          • MarkOH

“Trump is going to start discriminating on the basis of national origin”

And you are OK with that? I someone is OK with discrimination of any kind, they support discrimination of all kinds.

          • Kate

“And you are OK with that?”

Yes, because I am a fan of evidence-based policing.

When you come to Canada, they ask questions to assess your risk.

Have you been here before? If you have, you were likely screened for criminality, as they tend to do that on first visits.

If you are transiting to Alaska, as an American, there is a mandatory search. They do so because of the high number of people trying to transit with undeclared firearms.

If you are coming to Whistler, speak English, and are driving or lack a return ticket, they will look for evidence of illegal work. They do so because of the high number of labour violations associated with Whistler.

If you spend time or have family in a drug source country, they will look harder for drugs and ask more screening questions. They do so because of the large number of customs violations associated with those countries.

If you spend significant time in countries where there is a history of radicalization, or have other indicia that indicate that you may be associated with extremist groups, they will follow up and grill you on it.

They discriminate on the basis of national origin all the time, because it works. Periodically, they go random to validate their measures – every X people get searched, period. If you talk with the agents about it, you will get the same consistent answer – it catches almost nothing. They profile because they have a job to do, and it works.

They profile on their documents, too, based on the amount of fraud. If your country has a high amount of fake credentials (India and China), Canada won’t accept those credentials without more evidence and transcripts straight from the school. If you are from areas in India or China where forged documents have been a consistent problem, they will give you extreme scrutiny or forbid you altogether, if they can’t vet you. It’s their job to protect Canada.

The same goes for police. I used to do a lot of longer drives. That meant driving at night, and I’m a Mexican driving a large van with tinted windows and Arizona plates down the I-10. I get profiled, and I get pulled over. They know it, I know it, and I wish they would be more honest about it. It takes a few minutes out of my day, and they interdict a ton of drugs. Profiling works.

It does mean that the best smugglers are the ones that don’t fit the profile – a granny who can keep it cool has pretty much a zero percent chance of getting caught. It disproportionately affects minorities, because minorities are disproportionately committing the crimes that get them caught. The people running drug vans along the I-10 tend to be Mexican, because the smugglers are Mexican, because the growers are Mexican, or the transporters are Mexican.

The reality is that profiling, even for terror attacks, works. Atheists aren’t generally running around committing suicide attacks. Christians insult and legally persecute gays, but don’t throw them off buildings or kill 49 of us in a nightclub after swearing allegiance to the leader of a Christian terrorist group.

If you’re from a failed state, and they can’t pull accurate police records and do their due dilligence, the government has no business letting you in. You may or may not be a criminal, and it’s not your fault, but it’s not their job to place their citizens at risk for someone who isn’t a citizen, didn’t elect them, and didn’t pay taxes to support them.

“I someone is OK with discrimination of any kind, they support discrimination of all kinds.”

Not all kinds. Just the ones supported by evidence, when done by the government. I don’t believe in ignoring facts.

          • MarkOH

Thank you for admitting your are a hateful bigot. Next time, just to be less verbose (that means less wordy). Trying so hard to justify discrimination just makes you look foolish

          • Kate

“Trying so hard to justify discrimination just makes you look foolish”

There’s no need to justify it. What needs justification is using the force of law (you know, people with guns) to compel people to do business with each other.

          • MarkOH

Sigh, I’m sorry . I’ve been trying to debate important issues with some one who, obviously, has a 2 digit IQ.

      • JCF
        • MaryJOGrady

I’m with Debs there, except that there are some people that the rest of us must count on being protected from. It’s a sad reality that some souls need to be in prison. The sociopath who murdered my best friend in 1996 I think is a prime example.

          • JCF

I don’t think it’s a contradiction to say that, while there are some people who should be imprisoned (for society’s safety, and perhaps also their own), we’re not truly “free” while they are. In the long run, we HAVE to find a better way…

{{{Mary}}} re the loss of your friend.

          • MaryJOGrady

            Thank you.
I have known and even loved some idealistic people who believed that nobody should be incarcerated for any reason, ever. Talking with them, I have racked my brain (or what is left of it) as we wondered what a better way would be, which would incapacitate the offender and yet protect the rest of us.
The Scandinavian countries seem to do incarceration really well; it is as humane there as it is likely to be. Those are far different societies, though. For one thing, there is far less of the attitude that some residents are just disposable.

There won’t be a muslim registry – just individuals from largely Muslim countries where terror is an issue.

The registration list (higher scrutiny for individuals from those countries) was dismantled by Obama, so Trump is simply stopping immigration from those countries until a better vetting process can be rolled out.

There is no list, and if there were it a) won’t apply to US citizens, and b) won’t take into consideration individual religions anyway.

      This is silly.

      • Tiger Quinn

What’s silly is telling other people that they are protesting wrong. Just go sit down.

“Simply stopping.. until a better vetting process can be rolled out.”

There will be no better vetting process. The new vetting process will likely just be “No.” The current process for refugees is fine. Only Xenophobes think otherwise.

        • Kate

‘There will be no better vetting process. The new vetting process will likely just be “No.”‘

That would be a better vetting process. The US has plenty of our own homeless and uninsured to take care of, and absolutely massive debt.

As for the better vetting process, there has already been talk about it. In addition to increased background checking, applicants would likely be interviewed about their opinions on women’s rights, a secular government, and freedom of religion. Like any interview, some will lie, and the investigators will be tasked with looking for signs of deception and finding evidence thereof.

“The current process for refugees is fine. Only Xenophobes think otherwise.”

That’s a rather broad brush you are using. There are quite a few reasons to oppose the current refugee system, and only some of them involve xenophobia.

I’ve worked in security, and in NYC. We had random subway checks, and stop and frisk.

I’d have a lot more sympathy if the people getting busted by stop and frisk weren’t, you know, breaking other laws at the time.

Besides, I’d think the liberals would be all over stop and frisk. Without it, concealed weapons bans are entirely useless.

          • Scott

50 of my Australian dollars say you’ve never worked security in NYC.

          • Kate

“50 of my Australian dollars say you’ve never worked security in NYC.”

You’re right. I didn’t say I’ve worked security in NYC.

I worked security in AZ. I was a licensed armed guard.

Additionally, I worked in NYC (tech, not security). Separate jobs.

          • MarkOH

            Ah, “alternate facts”.

          • Kate

No, the same facts, clarified because you had difficulty parsing the sentence.

          • MarkOH

I know I shouldn’t feed trolls like you. But you do realize you a little more than a life support system for your vee Jay Jay according to Trump.

          • Kate

Do you realize that Trump has said nothing of the sort, and has a history of treating women as equals in business?

          • MarkOH

What alternative universe do you live in?

          • Kate

I have edited my earlier message to clarify what I was trying to say, and to make it clear that the two parts “working in security” and “working in NYC” were at separate times.

      • Diogenes Onionpants

As usual, you’re conflating two completely different things.

NSEERS, the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (by which men and boys, but not women, immigrating from certain countries had to register their movements within the US) had fuck-all to do with vetting prospective immigrants.

And, guess what? It was Homeland Security who argued for eliminating the registry, because it required resources that could be better used in vetting potential immigrants.

And the Obamas and Bidens and Oprah and Meryl…

    • Lawerence Collins

      Please, Hillary can’t be bothered.
      The rest, we’ll see about!

      • Jukesgrrl

Why would you say such a thing? Just because she treated the position of the presidency with respect last week? Personally, I admired Hill’s and Bill’s graciousness in the face of defeat. It doesn’t mean they approve of Trump. Ask President Carter what he thinks.

        • Tiger Quinn

I really detest people who ask a question and then provide the answer, which is always skewed wildly out of context. “Oh, you don’t like Hillary? Because you’re pro rape, right?” No sister, because she ran a shitty campaign and got verrrrry lazy, and here we are.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Had nothing to do with 900 some odd polling places being closed (mostly in red and swing states). Voter id laws in MI, and WI. Right wing apparatchiks and foreign countries meddling. It was ALL hillarys fault cause the polls showed her in the lead so her royal highness grew lazy. Ok. Got it.
            Thanks for clarifying!

          • danolgb

And the other form of suppression like a primary candidate who refused to concede who started all the lies that Donald continued with and the emails out of context from the hacks were used to reinforce.

They claim Hillary acted entitled to the position yet ignore the entitlement it takes for a guy who lost the primaries by 4 million votes still thinking that he deserved the nomination.

And so, because of their alleged injury, they just sat out of the election, voted for terrible third party candidates, or continued to trash Hillary while acting like they were making a sacrifice to vote for her.

        • Silver Badger

Jukesgrrl, not everyone liked Hillary and they are having trouble letting go. Pay them no mind.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

I think ur late on the scene. There are several here that believe hillary thinks shes above reproach.

        • Lawerence Collins

I never mentioned how she appeared to have treated the Presidency, when she was running. This country and its people need real true leaders who will stand up for and fight for all of us. Not later maybe, but now.

Trump is right! America should register all Muslims!

I just love when older women notables start getting a bit feisty. I guess it proves with age comes wisdom, with wisdom comes respect, and with respect comes the ability to call out the fools, all done properly and knowing just how to strike. Good on her.

    • Jukesgrrl

My mother, who is 90, went to her first-ever political demonstration last Saturday. I had to push her in a wheelchair and she was almost unrecognizable under her blankets and rain gear, but she was there, wearing a button that said, “If you’re not outraged you aren’t paying attention.” Speaking of attention, she got a lot of it. I’m sure she would sign any registry Trump puts up to discriminate based on religion.

      • djcoastermark

Give your mom a big ole hug from me. She sounds like a real pistol.

        • Michael White

          ditto

        • Robincho

She probably can’t believe she still has to protest this fucking shit!…

        • Zeldacat

Me too. My recently departed grandma would have done the same, both the protesting and any registry, and I’m pretty sure she was in her early 90s the last time she was in the Seattle pride parade. She got lots of attention there, too, I’m told.

I love old ladies who don’t take shit. I hope I can be one someday.

          • JCF

In 1984, when my late grandmother was 85, I took her to see Geraldine Ferraro, Democratic nominee for Vice-President. What a memory of my beloved “Gaga” (long before “Lady G” was even a thought!).

I just posted the Eugene Debs quote above (“While there is a lower class, I am in it” etc). The 19th Amendment (allowing women to vote) was ratified in August 1920. My grandmother turned 21 in October. And then she voted for the Socialist, Debs…running for President from his prison cell (where he’d been sentenced for Sedition during WW1).

I come from some good stock. šŸ™‚

          • MaryJOGrady

            You do indeed.

      • MaryJOGrady

We should all be like your mother.

      • ColdCountry

I want to be just like here when I grow up!

      • Nowhereman

That is really really cool! And I remember that button from back in the day. They need to make a comeback. I also read today that the book “1984” is selling like hot cakes and they had to do an extra large reprint run than they usually do. I was glad to hear that it’s still being taught in schools, but they had to reprint a whole lot more due to increased demand.

    • ColdCountry

And on top of all that, I think we old ladies are rather tired of behaving the way society expects, and frankly, don’t give a damn about what people will think of us anymore. At least, that’s my story. I do try not to be (too) unkind, but anything else just might be a go.

  • CottonBlimp

Having just watched a little program about Salman Rushdie’s years in hiding, I have a very different reaction to this than most of y’all.

We need to do everything in our power to protect the rights of Muslims to freely worship. We should NOT be trying to legitimize a religion. This kneejerk reaction of thinking “Trump hates Muslims therefore Muslims good” WILL be taken advantage of by Islamists.

Never forget that liberalism defends the rights of the *individual*, not the privileges of oppressive ideologies with alternative facts.

    • righteous mob

There are many different sects of Islam. Not all are Daesh approved.

      • MaryJOGrady

True. I have heard that some of the Sufis rather enjoy wine and openly scoff at the multiple-female-virgins-in-Paradise notion, asking, “Is Allah a pimp?”

      • CottonBlimp

Not every Christian bombs abortion clinics, but most of them voted Trump.

    • John30013

I don’t think this action (people who aren’t actually Muslims registering as Muslims) is an attempt to “legitimize a religion”; it’s a form of social and political protest and, in a way, a “denial of service” attack, in that the “registry” will essentially be useless for identifying people who might have ties to Islamic extremists.

      • CottonBlimp

I was seeing this “register as a Muslim” thing as a symbolic move. Your explanation about the practical purpose makes sense to me and legitimizes it a bit more.

I just think back to this story about how the head of an atheist org wanted to connect with his local mosque, I think after the mosque had been vandalized in a hate crime or something like that. The imam asked the atheist why he was volunteering to help out at the mosque, and the guy said, “even as an atheist, freedom of religion is important to me. I think you should have the right to worship, just as I’m sure you support my right to not worship”, and the imam said

        “No I don’t.”

He then proceeded to sit in on the Imam’s service, where he railed against sluts, perverted queers, and apostate traitors.

  • jixter

If everybody registers as Muslim, will they then have to pass a law making that a crime?

  • another_steve

Such a good and decent human being she is. Such a mensch.

Interestingly, Jewish tradition has it that if your mother was Jewish, you are Jewish.

    Albright’s parents converted to Judaism.

  • CatApostrophe

Spouse ‘n I plan to do it as well.

  • Goggles

It’s cute that Dem politicians have little acts of resistance planned out for after such a god-awful registry were to come about, but instead of that how about talking about the lengths they’re willing to go to bring all of government to a halt before it gets to that point?

If Madeleine Albright wants to help, it’d be a lot more useful if she’d ask Democratic senators to stop voting for Trump’s fucking cabinet nominees. This “resistance” is worse than if Dems in the legislature just didn’t show up to work at all.

    • CatApostrophe

She can do both. Why don’t you write her and ask?

      • Ross

        And thank you.

      • KnownDonorDad

Off the top of my head, I don’t recall Albright being blamed for the Rwandan genocide, unless it’s indirectly as many world powers stood by and let it happen, in which case there’s a lot of blame to go around.

    • NO MORE GOP!

  • Wynter Marie Starr

If there is a registry, I intend on registering as an atheist Muslim. There is no way I will stand by and watch a Holocaust.

    • Silver Badger

Register as a gay atheist Muslim. Why stand by and watch a Holocaust when you can be part of one?

      • Wynter Marie Starr

I hadn’t thought about that. If there is a box, I’ll mark off gay as well.

        • You know, if one Protestant person, just one person does it they may think he’s really sick and they won’t take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they’re both faggots and they won’t take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and walking out. They may think it’s an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and walking out. And friends they may thinks it’s a movement.
And that’s what it is , the Alice’s Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and all you got to do to join is sing out I AM A MUSLIM the next time it comes round…

          • Wynter Marie Starr

            I adore Alice’s Restaurant.

    Why even do this.

    It doesn’t matter.

    This is stupid.

Tell you what, could you just go sit down while we do this? Thanks.

    • Bill_Perdue

      Go home, quisling.

      Quislings prefer this:

“Hillary Clinton evolved on same-sex marriage within the first 72 hours of her presidential run, as her campaign said Wednesday that the former secretary of state now backs marriage equality as a US constitutional right.
The about-face, dropped as Clinton was preparing the second of two progressive-leaning appearances in Iowa, represents a significant ā€“ if not completely unexpected ā€“ shift from her previous statements that same-sex marriage should be legislated state-by-state rather than on the federal level.”
      http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/apr/15/hillary-clinton-gay-marriage-presidential-campaign?CMP=EMCNEWEML6619I2

      • Ross

Obama came out in favor of marriage equality in 2012.

Hillary did so in 2013 after she left her position as Secretary of State. She could not publicly advocate for marriage equality while SOS.

One of her first initiatives while SOS, in 2009, was to assure that same-sex couples were treated equally in her department. Previously, in an emergency situation where an evacuation was necessary in X country, a same-sex partner would be left being if they were not employed by the department. Hillary changed that. ALL couples were given equal treatment.

        • Bill_Perdue

Both are rebranded bigots who rebranded just before the elections or before they announced.

H Clinton was a committed supporter of B Clintons DOMA until the last minute before she announced.

Obama needed votes and money in 2012 and he needed to fool people to get both. He rebranded.

    • HZ81

Once again we’ll take care of the precious kittens who couldn’t be bothered to vote for their own good, let alone the good of their brothers and sisters.

We’ll do it. We always do.

You don’t fight you appease and enable racists, warmongers and union busters because those are your political goals.

And you lose becasue those politics are rejected.

There are no differences of import between the two parties and the workers utter disgust with both bankster parties is increasing.

In 2008 Democrats and Republicans each got about 31% of the eligible vote.

In 2012 Democrats and Republicans each got about 29% of the eligible vote.

In 2016 Democrats and Republicans each got about 25% of the eligible vote with 1 or 2% going to the Libertarians and the Greens.

I wonder if “vaguely post-Protestant whatever that means” is close enough to “Muslim” for the registry.

I did once live right next door to an Islamic Center.

Even though this happened well after I moved from that neighborhood, some fortunately inept, wannabee radical Christian terrorist tried to firebomb the center.

That reminds me of King Christian X of Denmark who wore a star of David when the Danish jews were required to do so by the Nazi occupiers. Some historians say this is myth; others say there were eyewitnesses, but the act was suppressed. At any rate, many Christian Danes wore stars of David during the occupation.

    • KnownDonorDad

That’s truly gutsy. I enjoy hearing accounts like that. Another piece of history, from the U.S. Holocaust Museum:

Italian military authorities generally refused to participate in mass murder of Jews or to permit deportations from Italy or Italian-occupied territory; and the Fascist leadership was both unable and unwilling to force the issue.

    • Tor

A few months back, when this came up, someone clarified that Muslims won’t have to go register. Their data will be taken from immigration docs. I suppose that means that non-immigrants might (might) not be targeted. Call me naive.
But if that is the case, the movement for the rest of us to register won’t exist.

Zionists are racists. Bibi had nothing to sellout, but he did it anyway. He likes the idea of being a sellout.

“Trump first called it a “Muslim ban” and that’s what it is. It may now be cloaked in ‘security concerns,’ but it’s all xenophobia & bigotry.”

    -Evan McMullin

    • Please do not post him. He makes good noise but he is a WombNazi.

Has anybody heard when we will be sewing patches on our clothing that will display our despised minority status? I’m in 3-4 despised minorities myself, and I need to get a head start on sewing them on.

    • William

      Collect the whole set!

Everything I am and do is a despised minority of some sort.

“There is one god, Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet.”
They’re words that can be said.

As a Pagan, I have problems swearing to one religion that wants to convert me cause another’s threatening violence. Frankly, already being of a minority religion’s gonna have to do. šŸ™‚ (Also I kind of get the feeling they aren’t going to be getting that information by *asking people in general.* )

    Allah akbar, dearest madame!

Large protests/demonstrations in DC and NYC tonight over this. People seem willing to mobilize quickly and in large numbers – we have to keep it up.

    • billbear1961

Yes, this is going to be a LONG battle!

And I’m afraid it won’t be long before “law enforcement,” under FASCIST control, turns VIOLENT.

Right-wing agents provocateurs will give them the excuse they need to crack down on perfectly legitimate protesters.

    • Shouting and stomping in Philly going on as I type.

    I am an Afro-Martian Muslim. šŸ˜‰

That must make planning a Chinese New Year dinner party complicated.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

Me too, and I’m an atheist.

  • Seeing so many “This user is blocked” in this thread warms my heart. Best decision I made blocking the trolls.

Ah huh…well, you go Maddy! But, tell us, which of your many religions excused the fact that your policies starved to death 100’s of thousands of Iraqi children? So, STFU, you evil old cow!
