Merriam-Webster Trolls Conway On “Alternative Facts”

From Merriam-Webster:

Fact (“a piece of information presented as having objective reality”) spiked dramatically on January 22nd, following an exchange between Chuck Todd and Kellyanne Conway on NBC’s Meet the Press that was fraught with epistemological tension.

“You’re saying it’s a falsehood, and Sean Spicer, our press secretary is giving alternative facts to that,” Conway shot back. “Wait a minute, alternative facts? Alternative facts — four of the five facts he uttered, the one that he got right was Zeke Miller, four of the five facts he uttered are not true. Alternative facts are not facts — they’re falsehoods,” Todd replied.

Fact meaning “a wrong or unlawful deed” is rare, but is still used in the phrase “after the fact.” In contemporary use, fact is generally understood to refer to something with actual existence, or presented as having objective reality.

      • UrsusArctos

This was Canadians & French nationals looking to head to DC. A very different beast. It wasn’t US nationals crossing back into the US. I’m more concerned about the questions I’ll be asked as I try to cross into OTHER countries, not back into the US.

        • PBGVNinja

You can’t re-enter the country without one. You absolutely have to have a US Passport or Passport Card to get into the United States from outside the country. Even if you just want to go to Mexico or Canada.

      • Paula

I am going to France and Spain in March. Am I going to be looking for a new country? Who will take me in?
        I hear Mars Needs Women.

      • Robincho

First, ask if there will even BE an overseas in August…

      • PBGVNinja

No. You are US citizens and you have an absolute right to enter the country. Foreigners do not. That’s why you go through a different line than overseas visitors.

        • John30013

True; however, *all* of your belongings are subject to search without a warrant at the border (thank you, USA “Patriot” Act).

          • PBGVNinja

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe US Customs has had non-warrant search authority for much longer than the Patriot Act has been in force. I would warrant that they have had it from the time the agency was founded (along with the US Treasury) in the late 18th century. From personal experience I recall having US Customs search all our bags thoroughly when we returned to the US from overseas in 1976. And that was off a MAC flight from US air base to US air base. It took us over 2 hours to get out of inspection.

      • Librarykid

A well-traveled friend said to always say that you are Canadian, if asked and don’t talk much.

    • UrsusArctos

I’m as liberal as it gets and despise this administration. That said, I have NO right to enter another country with the intent to protest, nor do they. Every border crossing is a privilege granted, in or out of the US. So, while it was tacky, it wasn’t unheard of or unlawful. Save the rage for real abuses, we’ll need it.

      • Richard Schneider

Painful as it may be, this is correct. Countries may turn away outside instigators, it’s old and settled law. And ultimately the resistance is up to us.

        • UrsusArctos

I was pretty exercised about this action at first glance, but upon digging saw it as normal border operations. Nope, Canada isn’t the 51st state anymore. Once upon a time border crossings were much simpler. Not any more.

          • Robincho

You think it’s tough now. Just wait for The Second Wall…

          • Paula

Yeah, Cheetolini want to keep all of those damn frostbacks out of the country. 😉

          • UrsusArctos

I hope it’s not the northbound refugees that’ll be the problem.

          • John30013

Yep. I grew up near Niagara Falls/Buffalo area, and my father worked at the General Motors plant in Buffalo with many Canadians. I remember many trips across the border to visit his friends (and the Canadian side Niagara Falls park is just *way* better than the U.S. side). It really makes me sad to know that you now need a passport just to take a day trip across the border.

      • gaymex1

True…but unncessary fear. Canadians will probably not want to prolong their visits to the U.S. It is the beginning of abuse.

        • UrsusArctos

There will be MANY other reasons for foreign nationals to be less likely to feel “welcome” in the US unfortunately. Incomplete reporting or click baiting like this was used several places won’t help with that.
I was told many ages ago to consider ANY border crossing in either direction a success. That to make success more likely, treat it like a traffic stop – be polite and pleasant, just the facts, yes ma’am/sir, have your stuff in order and don’t let the agent push you since some will try. Even doing that I have been pulled aside for further questions entering and exiting. numerous times I’m in agriculture so that gets special attention, believe it or not.
The BEST was my 1st trip into Germany (Frankfurt) in the 1980s. The German customs officer called me aside to rummage through my suitcases. Finished. Looked up, smiled and said “Well, no cigarettes. You look like you smoke. Enjoy your visit.”

          • gaymex1

I actually do agree with you about border crossings. I’m always happy to smile and be civil. I do wonder why anyone would announce that they were going to a protest. It’s like a red flag. If something bad happens and an agent knew what you were up to…that’s his or her ass on the line. I still feel we shouldn’t fear non-violent protest, but there was no doubt increased security in place. I hate that it happened and I am angry about it, but they should have been aware that saying you’re going to enter the U.S. to protest was not well thought out. I know that I am strictly forbidden from getting involved in political matters in Mexico and I know that I would be tossed out if I got involved, even though I am a permanent resident. If I were asked at the border who the president of Mexico is, I would either say I wasn’t sure or that I don’t speak Spanish well enough to understand the complexities of Mexican politics so I leave that to the citizens of Mexico. Why ask for trouble?
            Edit…that cigarette tale is hilarious.

          • John30013

            I was hoping there’d be a “happier” ending to that encounter… 😉

    • gaymex1

…a wall is a wall is a wall. Some are made of concrete.

    • JaniceInToronto

You couldn’t drag me across the U.S. border with a tractor. Not a chance. Not just NO, but HELL NO.

Your country is in deep deep shit and I hope you don’t take us down with you.

      Sorry, eh?

      • JD

I have so tried not to say this–but I knew something had changed some years back when members of a US board I was on individually caught my ear to clarify that they weren’t “like the others” who were aggressive pro war. Over half the group–individually–all afraid to speak out publicly. That’s how it happens, I thought, and now it has. This is a deep, deep malaise.

    • PBGVNinja

First mistake – they told the agent they were going to the March. They should have said they were just coming over for the purpose of tourism. As foreign nationals without visas, they can be denied entry at the discretion of the immigration inspector. That provision has always been in the visa waiver law – if the agent wants to, he/she can send you right to secondary inspection or deny entry if you are a foreign national. The visitors had the right to demand to see the agent’s supervisor to protest the decision.
I’ve run into problems myself trying to get into the UK. Questions upon questions asking why I was coming in, demanding proof of my return ticket on one trip, and then when they saw my Belgian visa (from my exchange student days) they instantly changed their tune – “oh, you’ve been here before”. UK immigration inspectors can be absolute assholes.

  • jefe5084

Why doesn’t anyone use “lies” anymore? Alternative facts are “lies”, falsehoods are “lies,” false statements are “lies.” It’s a good word, takes up less space and is concise. Use it you fucktards. Chuck Todd is a non-journalist, just like Hardball Chris. Bunch of cowardly, butt sniffers.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

        • Todd20036

          Rachel Maddow?

          • Robincho

It’s probably tough for a doctorate from Oxford, but still, Rachel needs to tone down the Romper Room teacher approach in her opening segments. And O’Donnell needs WAY less of the Shatneresque faux gravitas…

          • JW Swift

Yeah, I love Rachel, but that is my one problem with her: she really does belabor a point.

          • GayOldLady

To the point of making you want to scream.

          • MusicBear88

That’s my problem. Also, in the past year, she’s cut back on human interest stories that might give you a glimmer of hope in the world and just hammered away at all the bad. I already know how bad things are, I’d just like to not focus on that for a few minutes sometimes.

          • Librarykid

I think that she is trying to give deep background for people who maybe are too young to have been through the events or who are maybe in need of a refreshing before the background leads into the day’s current news. I like that it is the only part of her hour that is not chopped up to fit in between the long commercial runs. She and Joy Reid are my favorite on-air personalities.

          • JW Swift

I absolutely get that, and that’s why I try to have as much patience with her as I can, but often she will go on and on about the same point, over and over again, as if we were little children and she thinks the concept is too difficult for us to grasp. It really is a tad frustrating.

          • FloBear

Not since her endorsement of Greta van susteren (shudder). I think Rachel has gotten too accustomed to her million dollar lifestyle.

    • Steverino

Yep. Even though he tried to pin down Conway, what I thought was bizarre was the softball treatment that the “roundtable” toward the end of the program was giving to Trump’s Inaugural Committee head, Tom Brockman, I think was his name (a longtime friend of Trump). He was babbling on with a happy face about how “pictures can be curated different ways” and he told Trump the crowds were about “1.5 million,” but “that wasn’t behind Trump’s displeasure with the press” because “President Obama’s first day in office…” blah, blah, blah.

It was a chilling example of gaslighting, and everybody just lapped it up.

I’ve been thinking a lot about gaslighting lately because of this election and inauguration, and it occurred to me that gaslighting is exactly the psychological technique employed in “reparative therapy.” It is the stuff of brainwashing and cults. And it also is a propaganda technique used in asymmetrical warfare by – surprise, surprise – Russia. “You can’t trust your lying eyes, nor your common sense and intelligence. Believe us, we have the answers.”

(Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

Merriam Webster is not the only one trolling her. Designer house Gucci did not place those pussies button on the dress she wore for that sad house warming party by accident.

  • Halou

You’re fake words. Merriam-Webster is a failing dictionary. SAD.

    • BockMcMillan

      LOL

  • Rebecca Gardner

Here’s the scary part. 80% of Spicer’s very first day was provable, blatantly obvious lies. We now cannot trust a single thing this Administration says. You can’t govern in that way.

    • Carl

Anyone asking you to give this administration a chance is asking you to surrender.

      • For those who have given them a chance, they’ve *already* blown it.

    • clay

What gets me is can this administration trust a single thing this administration does?

But then that only matters if they have policy objectives other than destroy the government.

      • BearEyes

pillage and plunder – then destroy

    • geoffalnutt

Nothing at all. Zero. Nada. Nix. It’s all a lie. (Seriously)

    • MonochromeMouse

It is safe to assume that anything released officially by this administration is 100% false, and conversely anything leaked about this administration is probably 100% true

      • DonnaLee

I want CNN to go rogue and just use leaked documents, anonymous sources and attack journalism. If Trump doesn’t want to give them a press pass, they should seek information out from other inside sources.

        • MonochromeMouse

I don’t think CNN will do that, they’ve taken to hiring fringe conservatives like Santorum, but one of the other networks with at least a tiny shred of credibility and professionalism left should do that.

    • Frostbite

Who said Trump was ever going to govern? He is just a dicktator.

    • romanhans

Which is why they need to shut down the media, which is what they’re trying to do. Considering so much of America is already watching Fox and CNN I think they’ll let Trump get away with closing up the New York Times.

  • BockMcMillan

Newspeak is already here! May the Babylonians help us, “1984” has arrived after a 33 year delay.

  • Outlaw Woman

This just seals the deal …
With this statement about “alternate facts” and her announcement about Trump never releasing his tax returns, Trump and his team have made it abundantly clear that they are never going to be “presidential”, but are going to troll America for the next four years (at least).

    • Carl

Access journalism is a waste of time now. The media should stop wasting its time. Cut her mike. Send her home. Focus on investigative journalism instead.

  • Lumpy Gaga

Let us break this down sharply, one more time:

Rep. Rogers, Mike D. [R-AL-3] no point in writing this member of the AL Brain Trust, since there’s no brains there. I expect there to be amendments to kill fluoridation and vaccinations, since this is a “freak magnet” bill. The Deplorables can then be told “I voted to do X” knowing it was a dead bill.
There’s a link at congress.gov on the bill page to get action notifications on it if you would like. You can do that with any bill.

The Trumptards know not what they do. They degrade themselves and democratic governance when they degrade language and respect for the truth. They worsen the illusions of the easily manipulated, who are already filled to the brim with misinformation. They spin haloes around lies and in so doing make power unaccountable. Unable to break the law at will, they must first break the rule of reality, because once this is done crimes can be committed that magically become not crimes.

Who will hold the Trump administration, the Republicans, and the conservative movement, including the fundagelicals, accountable for their betrayals?

H.R.193 – American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017
    115th Congress (2017-2018)

    https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/193/text

    SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the “American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017”.

SEC. 2. REPEAL OF UNITED NATIONS PARTICIPATION ACT OF 1945.

    (a) Repeal.—The United Nations Participation Act of 1945 (Public Law 79–264; 22 U.S.C. 287 et seq.) is repealed.

    (b) Termination Of Membership In United Nations.—The President shall terminate all membership by the United States in the United Nations, and in any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body of the United Nations.

    (c) Closure Of United States Mission To United Nations.—The United States Mission to the United Nations is closed. Any remaining functions of such office shall not be carried out.

SEC. 3. REPEAL OF UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS AGREEMENT ACT.

    (a) Repeal.—The United Nations Headquarters Agreement Act (Public Law 80–357) is repealed.

    (b) Withdrawal.—The United States withdraws from the agreement between the United States of America and the United Nations regarding the headquarters of the United Nations (signed at Lake Success, New York, on June 26, 1947, which was brought into effect by the United Nations Headquarters Agreement Act).

… And it goes on. But the size of things to come will be determined by what the media decides to cover. Faux outrage about an orange size queens ego or the disaster known as the 115th Congress.

If the media don’t very SOON start to call these criminals the baldfaced LIARS that they are, it will soon be too late.

I posted this below to another steve, who thinks the majority of the American people will hold Trump accountable:

    We’ll see.

But even if they DO, what happens when MOST in the media and MOST elected Democrats DON’T?

Soon law enforcement, the military, the courts, etc . . . will be INUNDATED with Trump’s GANGSTERS.

When only ordinary citizens online are calling Trump and his thugs the LIARS that they are, and these FASCISTS are allowed to get away with lie after lie, outrage after outrage, crime after crime, one violation of the Constitution after another, WHAT WILL WE DO, Steve?

    What will WE do??

Brian Roberts, the head of Comcast that owns NBC, and Stephen Burke. the head of NBC are worth watching. For those who don’t know or don’t remember back in 1969 The Smother’s Brothers Hour was cancelled because LBJ was best buds with Bill Paley, the head of CBS. LBJ did not like the constant digs at the establishmenta and the Vietnam War. He hated the Smothers Brothers. The Smother’s Brothers Hour had the highest ratings of any show at CBS, still . . . bye Felicia. They were cancelled at the insistence of LBJ. So, I’m expecting similar stuff to happen today. Who are Robert’s and Burke’s “friends” in government? Is Trump one of their pals? If so, NBC may suddenly decide it’s time to finally retire Saturday Night Live. As I’m sure we all realize, Trump can’t take the heat.

    • TampaDink

Anything that Hair Furor has cancelled will be replaced by some other iteration of “the apprentice”.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I wonder if they would produce it even if so few people watched it actually cost them $$$$.

    • DumbHairyApe

Hmmm….Conway did tell Todd that he wouldn’t like the way they may treat him in the future….maybe Trump will persuade all anchors to be fired who don’t side with them in their “alternative truther” world.

      • John30013

I hope these network news anchors grow some hairy ones and tell Conjob, Spicer, and all Trump’s other spokesbots to go fuck themselves with their petty little threats, start using the word “lies” when that’s the proper term (and with this administration, it most certainly will be), and in general start acting like responsible journalists.

But I’m not holding my breath.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

There might be a few consequences that might make them pause. I think an outright cancellation and suspicions of why it was cancelled would make some people stop watching the entire channel or perhaps mass cancellation of Comcast.

Anybody who gets friendly like that with Trump needs to be tainted by the whole Russia connection as well.

    • John30013

While I fully expect Trump to try that shit, there are so many more media outlets now that even if SNL were chased from NBC (highly unlikely as it’s still one of their biggest audience draws), the show (or something in a very similar format—assuming they couldn’t take the “name” with them) could easily land on another basic cable channel.

In any case, SNL isn’t going to be Trump’s only foil; I imagine all the late night shows will be digging at him nightly (he’s a gold mine for them). Even Faux Snooze isn’t (entirely) giving him a free pass.

    • William

The “journalists” will not call them LIARS even when they have absolute PROOF of their lies.

And, as HZ81 points out below, not ONE WORD about Trump’s ties to Russia today. Everything I can find is at least a day or two old.

SNL’s Putin skit does more to air the scandal than “journalists” are.

The spineless, brain-dead COWARDS can’t chew gum and walk at the same time.

It’s up to US to hold these lying crooks, bigots and TRAITORS accountable.

Very few others, those in the public eye, are going to.

Michael R points out below that McCain and Graham will vote to confirm Tillerson as SoS despite his total lack of experience in government and his MONUMENTAL conflicts of interest.

Before our very eyes, we are LOSING this democratic republic to unparalleled BLATANT CORRUPTION.

They’re doing it right in front of our EYES, telling baldfaced LIES before SHEEP in the media and Democrats in Congress AFRAID to DENOUNCE them openly for WHAT THEY ARE.

These TRAITORS have nothing but CONTEMPT for us: “We’ll do as we please. You can’t stop us, and even if you could, you haven’t the GUTS to do it.”

THAT is what they’re telling us.

Here’s the scary part. 80% of Spicer’s very first day was provable,
blatantly obvious lies. We now cannot trust a single thing this
Administration says. You can’t govern in that way.

    • TampaDink

That won’t stop this administration from trying to “govern” that way. In fact, I suspect that they have someone analyzing, at this very moment, how they can correct this problem & get that percentage up to 100 by tomorrow.

    • canoebum

Please do not give them the benefit of calling what they’re doing “Administration”. It’s a regime, a putsch, a stealth invasion, a coup d’etat. The legitimate government of the United States ended on January 20, 2017. Whether we get it back again or not is an open question.

    • Natty Enquirer

Well, they got elected that way. I expect Trump et al. will govern that way as well. The media won’t call them out because they have a vested interest in keeping controversy alive. If they were to settle the controversy, their ratings would tank.

Trump is built entirely on a lie: the thinly-veiled lynching that is birtherism. We should expect nothing but falsehood from this man.

Good lord, what is wrong with Trump’s brain?

  • Piona O.

I’m hoping that over the next four years, it will be the liars and fabulators of the Trump administration against all of us normal people who treasure the truth.

  • Mike__in_Houston

Shit. Conjob set herself up to be trolled by Merriam-Webster. “Alternate facts”? Is she for real? I believe the expression goes, “You’re entitled to your own opinion; you’re not entitled to your own facts.”

  • I think Kellyanne Conjob might have been trying to describe alternative interpretations of fact (spin) – but the problem is that some of these things (like the quantity of attendees at the Trump inauguration) are not spin, they are objectively untrue.

    Spin examples:

Fact: man wrapped in explosives blows up bus in Tel Aviv, killing 49 civilians, 25 of which were schoolchildren.,

Spin (Hamas): man was freedom fighter, pursuing a plan of asymmetrical warfare against a militarily superior oppressor.

Spin (Israel) man was homicide bomber seeking to harm innocent children.

Spin (American) man was Islamic terrorist.

Now, a Kellyanne Conway-style “alternative fact” version of the above – Islamic terrorist used dirty bomb to kill 2,457 Israeli civilian, including passengers on dozens of buses and an entire school full of grade-school children.

Well after the Bush Senior invasion of Iraq, a lot of the pre-invasion propaganda about things like “Iraqi soldiers throwing Kuwaiti newborn infants out of windows so they can ship incubators to Baghdad” were Kellyanne Conway-style “alternative facts” – i.e., lies.

There is a difference between an alternative interpretation of facts, and “alternative facts.” Those who lie like that should be called out whenever we can ascertain the actual facts.

    • AJ Drew

Joann, you are too kind. Conway is the restaurant patron who loudly tells her server that she is vegan yet in a whisper orders steak tartare.

      • And in that Kellyanne’s alternate fact system, “vegan” might havs nothing to do with plant-based food, but perhaps might mean “raw food diet” – so pass her the sushi, too, as it would be fishy.

She’s not the first – Lewis Carroll’s Humpty Dumpty has that honor – See:

        http://www.bartleby.com/73/2019.html

These are not normal times. These are extraordinary times. And extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.
When you have a spokesperson for the president of the United States wrap up a lie in the Orwellian phrase “alternative facts”…
When you have a press secretary in his first appearance before the White House reporters threaten, bully, lie, and then walk out of the briefing room without the cajones to answer a single question…
When you have a President stand before the stars of the fallen CIA agents and boast about the size of his crowds (lies) and how great his authoritarian inaugural speech was….
