Senate Panel Approves Mattis As Defense Secretary, Lone Vote Against Was Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

The Senate Armed Services Committee just voted 26-1 to approve retired USMC Gen. James Mattis as Defense Secretary. Mattis is the first Trump cabinet nominee to pass this initial hurdle and must now by confirmed by the full Senate, where he is expected to face little opposition. The lone committee vote against Mattis came from Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), whom you may recall having grilled Mattis about his stance on LGBT citizens serving openly in the military. Mattis evaded her questions repeatedly and refused to say whether the repeal of DADT had undermined the effectiveness of the military.

  • Paula

Are we going to see the end of LGBT service? That would be unfortunate. I know many LGBT Army members that enjoy serving. That would be a grave injustice to them.

    • Jerry

I think now would be a good time for any service member to retire, LGBT or otherwise…not sure what war the shitgibbon has planned, but you know one is on the way.

      • bill weber

        Adding to Obama’s 7 or 8.

      • tristram

Whatever happens in terms of military involvement, I feel better having Mattis in the mix to balance the outright idiocy of Trump and Flynn.

        • Jerry

Yes, he may be slightly saner.

    • bmoore4026

Then maybe it’s time for gay military member to engage in a little civil disobedience.

    • KnownDonorDad

I think that’s a really heavy lift – not impossible, just difficult, and rumblings to do so would generate a lot of backlash against “pro LGBT” Trump. I think the far right is too busy salivating at the idea of banning abortion to devote much energy to reactivating DADT.

  • Todd20036

Yeah. Figures. Even democrats still just roll over and take it.
Kudos to Killibrand. At least one democrat had the balls to stand up for us

    • james1200

Senator Gillibrand and my own Senator Warren are two of my favorite politicians and though I don’t think America is ready, they are my dream ticket for 2020. Amazing women!

      • DaveW

I would wait to see what warren can deliver. I don’t agree with all her policies, she is too far left for me but I like much of it

However she comes across as an attention grabber who likes to grand stand and get press. Let’s see the results please

I am asking her to work on the cable/internet monopoly. It’s horrible how they treat us and we give them the land to provide their service

Let’s see if she does anything or just turns it into more PR for herself

I you like her opinions I would suggest you think about leadership and tone for an admin role like Potus. Very different experience needed doing that than grabbing headlines.

        • bill weber

One junior senator does not get “results.” I know you Obamafans believe in the Superhero theory, but it just ain’t reality.

Did you vote for Clinton? What “results” did she ever get?

        • james1200

Excuse me but Warren is about the only Democrat with balls out there. She fights Republican fire with fire and we need MORE of her, not less.

        • The_Wretched

Im sorry – you’re unhappy with warren’s “tone”. Have you seen the entire turnip cabinet and leadership in the senate and house? The problem with Dems is that they are too meek.

        • justmeeeee

An attention-grabbing politician? Surely you must be joking!

        • Gerry Fisher

Keep in mind that you’re asking her to produce results in a Senate in which her party doesn’t have power. The one way that you try to have an effect on things when you don’t have power is to use the bully pulpit. The one area where she achieves results after results after results is in grilling financial professionals during committee meetings using facts and holding their feet to the fire. YouTube has many examples.

        • Gigi

Warren does “comes across as an attention grabber who likes to grand stand and get press,” and that’s a good thing. You’ll need more like her if you ever want to win again. Being nice and minding your P’s & Q’s will make you lose every time.

      • bill weber

Killibrand? Is that a thing? cuz she wants everyone to be able to serve in our imperial killing force?

Gillibrand was allowed to cast this vote to protect her base. That’s why you often see her and Schumer cast opposite votes; it’s all settled backstage.

    • Stev84

Militarism is the norm across the board. Of course they wouldn’t ever vote against a general.

    • Even Warren voted for him. SMH.

  • paganguy

If he wasn’t willing to say yes under oath, then the answer is no and he didn’t want to admit it.

    • Bj Lincoln

That is the argument we need to work hard when time comes they want to vote our service back out. They have to have a better reason to kick out so many service men and women than ‘Gays are icky’ or their ‘God’ told them so. That is NOT a reason by law to take away the rights of fellow Americans. This is STILL our country and I’ll be damned if an uninformed hater is going to take away my rights! I don’t think the American people will stand for something like that. We have worked so hard to be treated with some respect and we have it. Look at those states who rolled back rights of ours. The world will treat us like we treated NC.

  • Kate

It’s a shame that it has to be so political – it would be good to have some actual research into whether or not gay (and women) servicemen compromise the military, rather than political theatre.

He should be able to answer the question honestly, rather than having it be used as a “gotcha” against him.

Are you serious? It’s been studied over and over, with the consensus that there is no effect. Here’s one for starters:

      • Acronym Jim

Oh, if only there were some research somewhere, anywhere really…and an efficient and quick way to search if it’s out there.

        Oh, if only…

/s in case that wasn’t obvious.

    • stevenj

Dozens of countries allow LGBT people to serve, some for many years. Research went into this issue when DADT was repealed.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_orientation_and_military_service

      • j.martindale

I doubt that they would stir the pot at this point. You have lots of gays in the military that are now out. They fit in fine with the rest of the military. If anything, I believe that trying to change back to no gays would create a backlash. When they tried to keep Hate Bill 2 here in North Carolina, the call to homophobia backfired on McCrory. Even tRump talks about being good for “the gays,” so I doubt anything would come of this.

        • stevenj

The call may have backfired on McCrory but HB2 is still law and 8 cities are without the basic civil rights protections they had before HB2. I hope you are right but I just don’t trust these people.

        • Todd20036

It would cost millions to discharge LBGTs now, especially those in trained, critical fields.

    • TimCA

Shouldn’t you be out somewhere trying on evening gowns for the inaugural galas?

      • CB

They’re all sold out in DC, remember? The gowns, that is, though I realize you could read that sentence another way.

        • TimCA

Maybe she needs to look further afield, perhaps in a remote hamlet somewhere without internet access? 😉

      • Kate

Schedule didn’t work out. I was considering coming down with the women’s march – there are buses here from Canada.

    • Andymac3

Gay and women? WTF Kate, did you bang your head? America is one country in the world. The majority of the rest of the world has gays and women in the military. And as far as gay men goes, they have always been in the American military whether it was known or not.

      • Kate

“America is one country in the world. The majority of the rest of the world has gays and women in the military. And as far as gay men goes, they have always been in the American military whether it was known or not.”

Of course. The question is whether or not it caused problems in America. Other countries may have done it in the interest of progressivism, to the detriment of their ability to fight, or the US may be homophobic enough that it undermined unit cohesion, even though the gay servicemen and women did nothing wrong.

    • Bj Lincoln

He didn’t answer because he can’t say ” Because gays are icky” or his ‘God’ told him to hate them.’. There are no real reasons to fire that many people and he knows it. It’s been studied many times.

    • Paula

Kate, I stay out of the things that you post, normally. I have to say something this time. Have you ever served? You fled the U.S. out of fear, right? You are a resident of another country now. Why are you even concerned about this, it doesn’t concern you now. You ran away. Stay away!

      • Bared Bear

Is this a real person? I figured it was just some low-grade, pepe frog alt-right bot creeping menacingly and mindlessly over the fence like kudzu or poison ivy.

        • barrixines

I think she’s real – who the fuck would invent an alternate identity as dreary as Kate?

      • stevenj

She said in a response to me several weeks ago she’d moved back from Canada after trump won.

      • Kate

        “Have you ever served?”

No. I have attempted to, here in Canada, but I was turned away – they only accept Citizens, not Permanent Residents. They wouldn’t have permitted me to enlist in the US (DADT, yay), and I would not enlist under Obama (though I would under Trump).

“Why are you even concerned about this, it doesn’t concern you now. You ran away. Stay away!”

I left the country to protect my family. I am able to do so in the United States, due to the legalization of Marriage Equality (which happened shortly after we left). We are in the process of moving back to the US. I am a US taxpayer, as required by law.

I have wanted a president like Trump for a long time. We’ve been hoping for some change for the better part of a decade, and we might actually get to see it.

    • barrixines

Well I guess this is better than cutting isn’t it Kate?

      • Kate

If you are referring to the act of cutting, been there, done that. Down that path lies some real darkness, and I don’t want to set those patterns up.

I fail to see the relevance, however, to whether or not gay service members actually undermine unit cohesion, even if that’s simply because the military is homophobic. It’s the military’s job to defend the nation, not play politics. If they don’t undermine unit cohesion, then there should be evidence to that effect.

        • stevenj

“If they don’t undermine unit cohesion, then there should be evidence to that effect”

What evidence is there that it HAS effected unit cohesion? A couple dozen countries have not found that to be the case. The sexual problems (like assaults) in the US military are primarily heterosexual (and they have been well publicized).

          • Kate

“What evidence is there that it HAS effected unit cohesion?”

If it did, would anyone go public about it?

          • barrixines

So presented with evidence that doesn’t fit your negative assumptions you choose to ignore it. I take back what I said about you – you’re just about as dumb as they come.

        • barrixines

I am not surprised in the least by your reply considering the way you engage on this forum is another example of acting out your own negative relationship with yourself. You’re not a dumb woman – either you knew or you knew you could find the answer in seconds as to whether there had been any research done on the effects of LGBT and/or women in the armed forces. However posting from a position of knowledge wouldn’t have garnered you the negative attention you seek from this forum. If you could only love yourself more Kate you’d spare the rest of us a lot of grief.

    • billbear1961

Jesus, what an ugly joke you are.

There is no point repeating the many FACTS that PROVE you WRONG on ANYTHING.

You aren’t INTERESTED, you far-right MACHINE.

But your side is winning: facts, the TRUTH, simple DECENCY, fairness, rational, critical thinking, SANITY–none of these things matter, anymore, to MILLIONS like you.

      • Kate

“You aren’t INTERESTED, you far-right MACHINE.”

        Yep, that’s me – pro-union, anti-globalism, pro-basic-income, protectionist, anti-corporate, pro-tax, anti-debt, pro-single-payer right-winger. I just ooze right-wing positions everywhere I go.

        “But your side is winning”

My side is the worker, and no, they aren’t. The best choices we had this time around were Hillary, and Trump. A war hawk who plays fast and loose with classified intel and managed to rack up over $110 million dollars through things like “speaking fees” despite not producing anything of value, and a billionaire narcissist who managed to be the lesser evil, who has appointed a cabinet with a higher net worth than the GDP of quite a few countries.

        Yay, workers.

        • stevenj

          Yep, that’s me – pro-union, anti-globalism, pro-basic-income, protectionist, anti-corporate, pro-tax, anti-debt, pro-single-payer right-winger. I just ooze right-wing positions everywhere I go.

Uh, what’s the attraction to trump and a crowd of right wingers that are anti union, anti raise the minimum wage, corporate, anti tax, pro debt (remember what HW &GW Bush left Clinton & Obama?) anti single payer?? Good luck getting health care here. Your republican pals just gave you the middle finger. And only about 35% of them are in favor of your marriage. You’re better off staying where you are.

          • Kate

There’s a reason Trump won in “blue wall” states – trade has objectively screwed over middle class and unions. A strike does nothing to stop a closing factory.

I don’t like Trump’s tax code, but the alternative is Hillary. Get fucked over on jobs, or get fucked over on taxes with a guy who’s going to spend and not tax. Yay.

As for healthcare, ObamaCare was a disaster and the reason I closed my family business. We didn’t get to keep our plans, and couldn’t afford the replacements. ObamaCare was the worst of both worlds, driving up costs while legally compeling people to do business with a for-profit cartel. It did more to kill the possibility of single payer than anything the Republicans ever did.

Marriage is settled law – it would cause too much chaos to try to un-marry people. I expect them to try to do more religious carveouts, but I’m not a fan of the government forcing anyone to do business with anyone (one of my problems with ObamaCare).

So, I had a choice – the candidate of Open Borders, Free Trade, “public and private positions”, Globalism, Crony Capitalism, Tax and Spend, neuter self-defence, and fucking over the working classs, or Closed Borders, Anti-Free Trade, “they let you grab them in the Pussy”, Crony Capitalism, Borrow and Spend, gun rights, and fucking the working class over less. I chose the lesser evil.

I chose the latter. So far, he’s killed the TPP (which helps Canada, too), and will likely renegotiate NAFTA. He’s threatened companies into bringing some jobs back (a small number, but not bad given he hasn’t had one day in office), and is working towards tariffs, which he has re-iterated his support for.

I have younger siblings who live in the states, and I’m watching their kids grow up. There need to be jobs for them, and I’m not sure the country can survive another 8 years of Obama policies, particularly with the way the demographics are going.

As an independant somewhere in the middle, I appreciate a balance – the last thing I wanted to see was Scalia of all people replaced by someone left-wing if Hillary won. Potentially multiple replacements. I don’t want to see the demographic shift that comes with large numbers of immigrants, and legalizing millions upon millions of illegal immigrants, grateful to the democrats for the chance to skip the line that law-abiding citizens wated for over a decade in, while they commit identity fraud, tax fraud, and other crimes.

The dems had their turn, now it’s time for the Republicans to un-do some of the damage (while causing some of their own). Barry doubled the national debt while fucking up healthcare royally and managing to convert large numbers of full-time jobs to part time – it’s going to be hard for Trump to do too much worse.

    • KnownDonorDad

Oh, if there were evidence that LGB members compromised the military, we’d be hearing about it on Fox, Breitbart, and various alt-white sites. Mattis should have simply said something along the lines of “DADT is the official policy, and I will continue to follow those guidelines.”

          • KnownDonorDad

Hadn’t thought of that. I’m pro-Mattis (especially in the context of the other picks) with the caveat that he shouldn’t have waffled on LGBT questions, but that’s definitely a plus. Imagine a Pence pick looking to bring on Armageddon instead of killing ISIS.

    • AtticusP

He must be great fun at parties…

  • I’m actually more concerned about war crimes and torture becoming approved and official U.S. military policy again.

As far as LGBT service is concerned, I expect they’ll do as the GOPers have done with every civil right advance of the last half century: Attack it gradually, from around the edges, until the civil right is effectively gone, regulated and legislated out of existence.

The newborn child of a homeless woman in Portland, Oregon, tragically
died last week after the two were found at a bus stop amid freezing
      temperatures.

On January 9th at around 6 a.m., a homeless woman
with a shopping cart approached an unidentified man at a bus stop and
opened her coat to show him her newborn baby, according to Willamette Weekly.

Since the woman was reportedly barefoot and only partially clothed, the man
asked her to cover herself and the baby before calling 9-1-1 for assistance.

According to text messages exchanged between first responders and their colleagues at the Portland Police Bureau, officers initially believed the child, who had been born just hours before the incident was reported, was still alive.

“Baby is conscious and breathing okay, but has been outside this entire time,” they communicated. “Baby is ice cold.”

Kirsten, it’s a shame you were left to fight this fight alone. Let me give you the appreciation you deserve!

This Navy veteran would have voted with Senator Gillibrand. Mattis’ inability to say, loud and clear, that he supports all the opportunities opened up to women and LGBT people in the military are settled questions and that he fully intends to support them sends the message to women and LGBT folks that they are on trial and the verdict is out. That’s totally unacceptable.
