farewell

LIVE VIDEO: President Obama Delivers Farewell Speech

From laughter at Trump to sorrow and deep abiding thanks to President Obama, whose farewell speech begins at 9PM Eastern. ABC News reports on what to expect:

In a farewell address to the American people Tuesday night, President Obama is expected to reaffirm his belief in the ability of ordinary Americans to bring about positive change in country, according to advance excerpts of the speech released by the White House.

“This is where I learned that change only happens when ordinary people get involved, get engaged, and come together to demand it,” President Obama is set to say in his adopted hometown of Chicago, where he first became involved in public service as a community organizer.

“After eight years as your President, I still believe that. And it’s not just my belief. It’s the beating heart of our American idea – our bold experiment in self-government,” the president will say.

“It’s the conviction that we are all created equal, endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s the insistence that these rights, while self-evident, have never been self-executing; that We, the People, through the instrument of our democracy, can form a more perfect union.”

I suggest we all put tissues close at hand.

And in 10 days, the antichrist will be in power.

^ THIS is a beautiful orange (and, says this Jesus-follower, a healthy use of urine combined w/ an artistic use of a crucifix).

In short, COMPLETELY different from the Pussy/Pissy-Grabbing Anti-Christ!

          • Duh-David

Piss Christ (Andres Serrano 1987) is monumental at 60-by-40-inch and awe-inspiring. I took my then 94-year old, Catholic Gram to see it, but she kept insisting she didn’t want to see such sacrilege, so I suggested we see it after we looked at this radiant autumn crucifix, that we had just passed. She stood transfixed, took out her rosary and prayed for ten minutes. Said it was one of the most beautiful stations she had seen. Wouldn’t believe me when I told her this was what all the mishigas was about.

    If I was Presdent Obama:

    “Fuck you’ns, one and all!”

  • JauntyJohn

    I’m already choking up.
For eight years – for the first time in my life – I had the privilege of admiring my president. Of having faith that, while he may be a flawed human like the rest of us, he was intelligent and capable and had the best interest of the people at heart.
Mr. President, you are a better statesman and leader than perhaps America deserved.
Thank you for showing me what integrity with power looks like.
Turns out it’s a rare sight, and one I can now only see in the rear view mirror.

    • MΩebym

PBO has been a better President than we deserved. HRC would have been a better President than we deserved. DJT? America deserves him.

      • Bruce Anderson

I wish you were wrong. But you’re not.

        • bill weber

      • BlindBill

no, we do not deserve don-the-con nor do we deserve what he will use this country for – personal profiteering and seeking the favor of the old money that has scorned him all of his life, and revenge on his imagined enemies …

      • JCF

Um, the MAJORITY of US voters deserve better than Drumpf. Never forget that!

    • AtticusP

      Amen.

(And I very, very rarely use that word…)

    • FAEN

I know what you mean. For the first time we had a President who didn’t view us as flawed, mentally ill vermin but citizens that deserved dignity, respect and EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW.

    • MarkOH

Why is Fox on a time delay?

    • bill weber
      • Halloween_Jack

Sincerely, fuck Cornel West. He’s been trashing his own legacy in his desperate attempts to trash Obama’s.

  • geoffalnutt

I can’t. Just the thought and I’m sobbing. I’ll try to catch it some other time.

  • FAEN

    Please stay!

  • MikeBx2

Throughout his Presidency he’s had a way of making me feel hopeful even during horrible situations. Not sure how he can do that this time. But I’ll be watching.

  • Michael R
  • I can’t watch. The despair I’m feeling right now is pretty much overwhelming. Imma gonna take another news break.

    • ericxdc

I’m the same. I can’t watch. I’ll take it in small doses on YouTube over the next week as I mentally prepare to shut down as Black Friday approaches.

  • Treant

I can’t. I simply can’t watch the end of the intelligent and reasonable era.

  • Chris H.

    **sigh**
    From class to Ass

  • Lazycrockett

I’m going to be watching for very subtle piss innuendos.

    • DaddyRay

I hope Obama is frantically modifying his address

      • Treant

        Just a widdle bit.

        • Natty Enquirer

There won’t be a dry bedsheet in the house.

          • Andymac3

            Depends

      • BobSF_94117

        How can he not???

        • Piercedchrlz

Really, even a wee wee small change in speech should be warranted.

    • Amanda B. Rekendwith

something like “….and we have learned many things over time: that silence is golden, showers are welcome, and change is inevitable.”

    • Stogiebear

If he alludes to it at all it will just be in passing. A piddling phrase or two. Water under the mattress pad, so to speak.

      • BobSF_94117

        Hat tip for “piddling”.

  • MΩebym

Like many other JMG commenters, I simply can’t watch. I’m just not ready.

I’m sure this speech will be one for the history books, but it’s been difficult grappling with the fact that Obama’s presidency will be history in just 10 days, especially given who’s replacing him.

    • DaddyRay

I have to watch it in real time to share in the emotion of the event.
I am sure this will be one for the history books and I want to be part of it

  • HoneyBoySmith

    I can’t bear to watch.

Even though I found him, at times, frustrating (IMO, he didn’t confront Republicans as early or as often as he should have), President Obama is the best man, the best human being to have occupied the Oval Office in decades.

Watching him leave office is inexpressibly depressing.

  • AtticusP

Vilified by some, but treasured by many.

    Count me among the latter.

I would regret losing him as my president even if my choice for his replacement had won the election.

Upon the inauguration of the ignorant orangutan, I shall miss him all the more.

Thank you, President Obama. Your place in history is secure.

    Well done, sir.

    • MΩebym

Hey, if you hadn’t made any enemies, you hadn’t stood up for anything.

      • AtticusP

        Well said.

        Totally agree.

      • Todd20036

Most of us have millions of enemies just because we are gay and unashamed of it.

      • bill weber

Like the record number of people he deported, and the record number of whistleblowers he prosecuted…

  • TJay229
    • Gerry Fisher

      He’s beautiful

  • safari
    • Treant

Oh, fuck him. He just went from political liability–which is survivable–to laughingstock. Which is not survivable.

And I guarantee you that tape will…wait for it…leak. How? “Depends.”

      • safari

It comes down to is the document produced legit, and if it is the same one Mother Jones and CNN are talking about.

        • Treant

I actually don’t think it matters any more. The idea is out there, and let’s face it, it’s so plausible it rings absolutely true.

And you know Trump is gonna suffer from Pee TSD from this.

          • Andymac3

Everything about Trump is golden, even his showers.

          • Todd20036

Frankly, his showers are the only thing genuinely golden about him

    • Ray Taylor

Nothing fake about it Donnie. Get in with the stream. You’ll love it.

  • where are they standing?

if you actually know, you and i probably are friends. edited to add:erase.

when he was still just a Jr, i remember when we were standing there. dammit, this is hard. no one knew who he was, back then.

meh. his wife is a really nice person. very smart. more pretty than she seems on film.

  • well, it’s time.

time to accept, um, “fascism.” cause it’s here, now, and ovens, “n stuff.”

people are going to try to kill you now. “you.” i am talking to you. i am not, nor do i, ever lie.

be ready. i’m being all dramatic and silly and i also have a head injury, but i’m not wrong. i’m rarely wrong. even when i’m drunk, or high.

i am black. there’s more to that, but the point i think you understand: they hate us. be ready for extreme hatred, the kind that kills.

there are some women here who yall don’t like b/c they have guns. rethink that.

    • Friday

That injury happen tonight or last, btw, Chicago?

    • Silver Badger

I’ve been a bit worried about you Chicago Dyke. Your recent posts appear to demonstrate some issues that I hope those near and dear to you are helping you with.

First Family in the House – Front Row

  • David Milley

The most consequential president since FDR will be taking the stage tonight to say farewell. But we’re fortunate: he’s hale and well, and well-positioned to provide a commanding voice of reason for decades to come.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

      Fingers crossed

  • DaddyRay

    Here we go

  • kaydenpat

    Tissues at the ready!

    • Cuberly

No kidding. I opened a new box. Seriously.

      • melllt

We were down to the last five tissues, and I had to run in the bathroom and grab a new one.

  • djcoastermark

Why do I feel that I am watching in real time one of those end of the world movies? You know the one where the president comes on to wish the world farewell, while trying to remain upbeat knowing full well we are all screwed?

    • Piercedchrlz

      Because you are.

    • houstonray

I think the fiery asteroid is due to impact the planet on 1/20, somewhere on along the Northeastern seaboard…

  • DaddyRay

So glad this was held indoors – the weather here in Chicago has been very wet with heavy rain

      Maybe Mother Earth is crying.

      (I know it’s cheesy. Sorry.)

      • Dreaming Vertebrate

As I posted on FB: ” And now someone of impeccable honesty, true love of country (that would be the USA), true adherence to the Office of the Presidency, and a man with an honest, intellectual, and caring family.

(and it will be a while before I can write those words again)”

  • BobSF_94117

We let him down… we really did.

  • Secure

I knew there would be screaming protesters. Ugh.

    • OdieDenCO

yes, but nobody egging on the thugs to take them out.

    • David Milley

The crowd handled it well, though: “Four more years!”

  • Cuberly

Ahh, they’re saying 4 more years. Couldn’t make out what was going on there for a sec.

  • Piercedchrlz

Cheetolini will Have to tweet about the 4 more years chant.

    • David Milley

He has his little hands full tonight …

  • FAEN

The crowd chanting ‘four more years’ just broke me.

  • Piercedchrlz

Not having his voice, his oratory skills representing our nation is just too horrible to consider, considering what’s coming.

    • David Milley

I think his voice will continue to ring out, loud and clear.

  • Piercedchrlz

One step back, I wish it were so…

  • Piercedchrlz

Preach it cause you Did it!!!

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

That backwards step would be Trump.

    • Piercedchrlz

America tripped and fell in a ditch in November, still trying to crawl back out.

I dunno, lends a certain “Kennedy at the Berlin Wall” ambience to the occasion.

  • Ninja0980

    I hate term limits… I really do.

    • Piercedchrlz

      And the electoral college

    • DaddyRay

With Republican gerrymandering, Russian Hacking, and FBI manipulation we may appreciate that Trump can’t server more than 8 years

  • karen in kaliforia

Totally. We’ve tried all sorts of channels. Too bad.

  • barrixines

Sorry but he’s talking a load of shite now.

    • Gerry Fisher

The existence of shite is no excuse to ignore the gold. That’s his point.

      • barrixines

Indeed – but in his normal decent way he carried on like this is a normal transtion of power and it’s business as usual for the US. That just simply isn’t the case with the shitstorm that’s hitting.

        • jsmukg

Yes. Deeply disturbing. His ‘normalization’ of this atrocity is appalling. I know this thread is a lovefeast for him, but this is not the way for him to go out.

  • ByronK

Never failing in his class, eloquence and intelligence. America won’t see the like of him any time soon. :(

    • bill weber

      NEVER, eh? Don’t worship pols.

      • ByronK

I don’t ‘worship’ pols. I respect all the attributes that I cited. Was he perfect? No. But wait till the pee storm hits.

      • Philly Mike

He is alreadt tweeting in all CAPS that it is a lie.

  • Piercedchrlz

Why wasn’t all this said over and over and over again throughout the campaign

“Touch it, dude!” Mr. Obama said.

Nothing disgusted me more than how F’en rude and hateful Republicans were towards Michelle – I will never forgive them for that

  • Piercedchrlz

    Oh, Michelle

  • DumbHairyApe

    I need a hanky too.

  • OdieDenCO

    tears

  • DaddyRay

There is a sadness in the First Family’s eyes just like our own

  • djcoastermark

The tears are beautiful, thanks President O.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

… and just a tad catchy.

  • Rex

I just can’t wrap my head and heart around the fact that this incredible man will no longer be my President. I’m going to be without a president for at least four years.

      hugz rex

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Not a dry eye in the house, …

    • Piercedchrlz

Not this house, even Dexter (my dog) is reacting to my sadness, he’s steadily licking my forearm and then checking my eyes for tears……

  • Sam_Handwich

hubs loves Michelle and is convinced she will run for president

    • fuzzybits

Did you watch the Oprah interview? She says no way.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

As much as I love the Obamas, I’m not sure I’d wish the Presidency on someone I love.

    • M Jackson

I am all for that. But Sam, all these years I thought I was your husband.

  • MikeBx2

    Alright. That did it. Tears.

  • Adam Schmidt

I’m not on twitter but I just want to say… #MichelleIsMyFirstLady

  • halfwaythere

I am so going to miss the obvious love and affection between the Obamas. I don’t think the Trumps even like each other.

    • Treant

I seriously suspect that “Urine” Donald finished in his hand, threw it at Malaria, and that conceived Barron.

    • Piercedchrlz

Would you love your abductor and domestic tyrant.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

And Mr. President, you have made us proud.

  • Scott_Lumry

    Alright, I’m crying now.

  • Outlaw Woman

This is great, loving every minute

OMG, watching Malia tear up…..”Of all I’ve done in my life, I’m most proud to be your dad.”

  • Secure

    Tears

  • Rebecca Gardner

Is it just me or does the look on FLOTUS, her daughters, VP and family look like they are all going to leave this speech and be ushered into a concentration camp?

    It’s creepy.

    • DumbHairyApe

      They did look under distress.

    • Paula

Naw, Obama has several hundred loyal, heavily armed soldiers waiting outside to get him out of the area.

  • Max_1

From high class to low crass… He shall be missed.

  • Stogiebear

This has been refreshing. Minute after minute of comprehensible sentences strung together in topical paragraphs. Would that such would continue.

    • M Jackson

And this President’s address isn’t delivered sitting on the toilet clutching his cellphone at 5:30am.

      • Bj Lincoln

Exactly. It’s not a pretty picture.

    • bill weber

Pretty words, sometimes. Illiberal acts, very often.

  • bsinps

Oh shoot, the tears started. Dammit!!!

    • BobSF_94117

That’s what a president looks, sounds, and acts like before a normal transfer of power.

    • beariac

      Historic, not histrionic.

  • Sam_Handwich

ok, back to the golden shower now

    • Ninja0980

    • Ray Taylor

Yellow bread… You don’t mean That’s NOT butter?

  • houstonray

Heading back to the golden shower thread, don’t want to sully this moment with talk of our disgusting PEEOTUS

  • Ninja0980

I can’t handle the transition from Obama’s elegant eloquence to the bellowing buffoon.

  • DaddyRay

    Was Malia Obama not there?

  • MB

And so begins 4 years of a drunken-stooper…

    • DumbHairyApe

What, you don’t want to be fully awake when the nuclear mushrooms start? It’s going to be pretty.

      • MB

I’m in Albuquerque, home of Sandia Labs, and Los Alamos is just an hour away up north. They both are most likely on the top 10 list of targets for a first strike. I’ll just put on some great organ music and pop the bubbly and wait for the flash.

I turned on MSNBC for the first time since the election. I hope you found it as worthwhile as I did

      • Kevin

I understand how you feel. And yes, the speech was great.

  • aar9n

All I want for Christmas is President Michelle Obama and a video of Trump being pissed on by Russian whores.

  • barrixines

A decent man and unfortunately in that speech way too decent to acknowledge the truth of what’s coming.

  • fuzzybits

It’s pouring rain here now,how appropriate.

  • Rex

I cried. Will we ever see a man, or woman, with as much class and grace as President Obama?

    • Sam_Handwich

don’t worry. trump’s going to pivot just as soon as the russian harlots have emptied their bladders

    • andrew

Maybe not, but it has been wonderful to have him as president for these eight years. Some good men or women will likely succeed him in that office, but his shoes will be extremely hard to fill.

      • GrandmasterBeavis

        You’ve got to be joking.

        • Annie Coffman

Well, we know the narcissistic sociopathic crybaby Trump will never be able to fill the greater man’s shoes.

  • Rex

    Thanks, Obama.
    And I sincerely mean that.

  • Natty Enquirer

Hope y’all stocked up on grace and hope tonight, because a drought is coming.

  • Ninja0980

Damn shame we’re going from him to a urine loving cry baby.

  • Bill

You gotta fucking love that the most admirable, intelligent, and dignified President in our history was a black man.

Mr. & Mrs. Obama, you did us proud.

Here’s hoping one day we rise to deserve you.

  • Lazycrockett

I turned off the tv and listened to it on NPR and without the distraction of other senses the speech was amazing and one of the best Ive heard in ages.

  • Blake J Butler

I can’t watch this for good reason, this awesome man and his adoring wife are going to be gone from the White House, and then the white trash comes up to the Russian…… I mean White House.

It’s too painful to comprehend that we could have been ok for another 4 years had people not become selfish and careless about what people might possibly lose under a trump administration.

That thought is over and is now going to become a reality. A nightmare that will persist beyond 4 years from the hellish nightmare we are about to venture into.

  • The Return of Traxley

It’s very late here. I have been quite sick lately, and I am so tired tonight.

I can’t bring myself to watch this.

My heart has already been broken so badly in the last year by people I thought I knew; people I truly cared for, and peple who I thought truly cared for me.

I will listen to this last great President of the United States with a sense of nostalgia, longing, and poignancy at a later time, when I choose to remind myself that people were once good to each other, and were once hopeful of brighter days as a unified nation.

It will seem like ages ago by then.

    • Jay George
      • The Return of Traxley

Thank you so much for your kindness. It’s my yearly bronchial infection. I have asthma, so I get this instead of a cold. No fever, just difficulty breathing and feeling gross and worn out. I’ll be fine in a few days.

    • MaryOGrady

Oh, dear The Return of Traxley! I am so sorry that all this has been happening to you.
Please make sure you take good care of yourself. You must put your own oxygen mask on *first* before attempting to assist anyone else.

      • The Return of Traxley

Thank you. I get bacterial infections in my lungs in lieu of colds. My doctor says it might be because I have asthma and it’s wherever opportunistic illnesses wind up.

As far as the neighbor situation goes, I’m leaving it all in the hands of the police and social services now. I’m done with it.

There are two reasons; first, because it’s more than I or anyone outside a crew of paid professionals can handle.

Second, because I’ve come to the conclusion that by not helping, I’m forcing the city to take immediate measures. When I expressed my concern about not completing the job at hand before the deadline, the officer in charge told me that’d be okay. The city would probably grant an extension if progress was being made. I nearly blew up — I don’t want to live indefinitely next to a derelict house in my safe, stable neighborhood. My neighbor also has a mortgage on the place that he struggles to pay each month. If the house is condemned and he defaults, it may take years to either tear it down or rehab it.

Adult Protective Services also called yesterday because my neighbor isn’t answering his phone or his door. He’s apparently angry that his old CRT computer monitor was thrown out. He wanted to keep it because he has a perfectly good Pentium I desktop he wants to use. Seriously. He walked into the dumpster and brought stuff back into the house before they took it away yesterday.

I also told the APS worker that I know I’m beating a dead horse on this, but I will not help move stuff not knowing if there’s more old, live ordnance stashed in the house. My neighbor neglected to tell me about the box of WWII anti aircraft rounds. I informed the police. I’m certain there are many more like these and possibly even more dangerous things.

I flat out told APS that my neighbor needs to leave the house until it can be cleared of unexploded shells. The place is a fire trap; if it burns, not only are first responders put in potentially fatal danger, the rest of the neighborhood is as well. I’m not going to be any part of enabling that.

I think I got my point across. The agencies are meeting together today to get a firm strategy in place.

  • MΩebym

So a friend who watched the speech texted me about half an hour ago about it and implored me to watch it.

He said, and I quote: “U will B doing your ailing heart a great disservice if U don’t listen to his wisdom. We need to get U to believe again !”

Sorry, man. I’m just not ready.

  • Mark

    What a beautiful man.

  • TheManicMechanic

Thanks, Obama. No, really. Thanks bunches.

  • leastyebejudged

Okay, Wednesday morning now. How many wept listening to BHO? When he turned and said Michelle and paused, I choked up even before he continued.

It was heroic and I know he was trying to inspire us as we move forward, but it felt like a eulogy that a great one had passed and the world will never be the same.

Obama legitimately belongs on Rushmore. I’m not always proud of my country, but my President made me burst with pride.
