Sessions: I Still Oppose Abortion Rights And Same-Sex Marriage But I’ll “Follow Those Laws” [VIDEO]

He’ll follow them until Trump stacks the Court against them. The Independent reports:

Incoming attorney general Jeff Sessions admitted that he still opposed same-sex marriage and Roe v Wade, a 1973 law that guarantees a women’s right to an abortion. Mr Sessions said he would “respect and follow” both laws in their current form, but admitted he still held his controversial personal views.

When asked by Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein if he still believed that Roe v Wade was the “worst colossal erroneous decision made by Congress”, he said he did hold the same beliefs and that the law “violated the constitution”.

“I haven’t said a woman’s right to choose or Roe V Wade is not the law of the land… so I’d follow that law,” he added. He was also asked if he still opposed same sex marriage and whether he would uphold the federal law.

“[The] supreme court has ruled on that. The dissent was vigorous.” “The majority of the court has established the definition of marriage for the entire United States of America and I will follow that decision,” he added.

  • Elagabalus

Like the other major emotionally constipated closet queen in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, I remain convinced that Sessions is being held hostage by the Republican power elite vis-a-vis blackmail, probably over an incident that happened long ago, in order to be their puppet and stooge. It happened with Dennis Hastert and it’s happening all over again. There will always be an eager closeted, power-hungry Republican who can be blackmailed into submission. Always.

That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it!

    • NancyP

Possibly. Don’t discount the possibility that he thinks that whatever he does is fine because he’s a special snowflake – the attitude that the action when performed by others is disgusting and when performed by oneself is A-OK. IOKIYAR.

His name is not “Jeff.” His name is Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III. Please, let’s get that right. Every Goddamned Time! Just like his buddies did with Barack HUSSEIN Obama.

Roe was never a woman’s blank check on abortion. It was always a balancing test between a woman’s right to abort a pregnancy and the state’s right to protect its interests, i.e., the woman’s health and “protecting the potentiality of human life.”

That should give Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III all the wiggle room he could possibly ever need to “uphold” Roe while constantly diminishing this right for all American women.

He was obviously well-coached and well-prepped. Very smooth. Said what his puppet masters told him would be uncontroversial.

Very difficult to find fault with “my own views on the matter differ, but as Attorney General I’ll uphold the law, whatever it is.”

    • ultragreen

They are not asking him the right questions. The real question is: How rigorously will Sessions enforce Federal law when it protects the rights of minorities and women? The answer: Not very rigorously. Another important question is: Should Trump succeed in appointing Federal judges who weaken or destroy civil rights protections for minorities and women, will Sessions refuse to enforce such unethical and anti-democratic court rulings? Of course, no such thing would happen. Sessions can be counted on to rigorously enforce any reversal of protections for minorities and women that are handed down from the courts. So in spite of his well-coached answers, he is a clear and present threat to our civil liberties and the civil liberties of women and other minority groups.

      • another_steve

I hear you. Of course. What you say there, of course.

But keep in mind, the name of the game is to get the monster confirmed and get this off the agenda.

Sidebar: just wait till Trump’s Labor Secretary designate gets his confirmation hearings.

Two-thirds of female fast food workers at restaurants operated by Andrew Puzder, Donald Trump’s controversial nomination for US labor secretary, experienced sexual harassment at work, a rate much higher than the industry average, a stinging advocacy survey has claimed.

… Puzder, CEO of the billion-dollar company since 2000, has staunchly defended his company’s notorious advertising that often features scantily dressed women eating burgers in scenes some have compared to pornography, arguing in 2011: “We believe in putting hot models in our commercials, because ugly ones don’t sell burgers.”

  • The_Wretched

I remember a certain John Roberts promising calling balls and strikes. He was more than happy to pretend racial bias in voting laws are a historical footnote. I’m not expecting Sessions to be any more honest.

    • canoebum

It was well known that Roberts had a strong animus toward the VRA at the time of his nomination. He had fought it legally at every opportunity throughout his career. So, in his hearings, when he said he was there to just call balls and strikes, he lied. I expect Session is no different.

      • The_Wretched

Sessions is also anti-VRA. They view it as a northern imposition that gets in the way of their glorious plan for never ending republican leadership.

  • ultragreen

Of course Sessions is going to say he will enforce the law in conformity with past rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court. The more relevant question is: How rigorously will he uphold Federal law on abortion, same-sex marriage, gerrymandering, and voter-rights protections? The answer, of course, is not very rigorously when such laws protect the civil rights of minorities and women.

Furthermore, should the Federal courts reverse their past positions on abortion, same-sex marriage, voter-rights protections, and other civil rights protections, it is certain that Sessions would rigorously enforce Federal laws when they strip away such protections from minorities and women. Thus, Sessions as the U.S. attorney general under the Trump administration is a clear and present threat to the civil rights protections of such groups of people.

I don’t believe him. How hard would you fight for something you opposed? How hard would you fight for something you feel is wrong? I don’t think he will fight very hard for anything that would make lives of us LGBT people or women easer.
