Meryl Streep Eviscerates “Disrespectful Bully” Trump In Powerful Golden Globes Acceptance Speech [VIDEO]

Meryl Streep tonight accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes and devoted her acceptance speech to eviscerating Donald Trump, whom she never mentioned by name. A partial transcript from her speech:

As an actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us, and let you feel what that feels like, and there were many, many ,many powerful performances that did exactly that—breathtaking, compassionate work. But there was one performances this year that stunned me; it sank its hooks in my heart, not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job—it made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.

It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter—someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie; it was real life. And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.

Okay, this brings me to the press: We need the principled press, to hold power to account, to call them them on the carpet for every outrage; that’s why our founders enshrine the press and its freedoms in our constitution. So I only asked the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the Committee To Protect Journalists, because we’re gonna need them going forward, and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.

As you are reading this, Breitbart and their ilk are feverishly planning their attack on Streep. Count on it. They will be vicious and they will be relentless. Trump, of course, will find it irresistible to launch an unhinged tweetstorm.

I’ll have to check fox fb for all the outrage. And they said they wouldn’t watch, lol.

  • JerryRich

“Breitbart and their ilk are feverishly planning their attack on Streep”? Bring ’em on! Meryl will wipe the floor with their sorry asses.

    • teeveedub

They’ll threaten to boycott all her movies that they wouldn’t have seen anyway.

      • JerryRich

I would send Meryl’s most villainous character, Eleanor Shaw from The Manchurian Candidate (2004), after the orange idiot and his mooks.

They don’t even realize this is digging their hole deeper. Meryl didn’t even speak out against trump’s politics per se, but his MOCKERY OF A DISABLED PERSON, something even the most politically conservative person should agree, “Yeah, that was going too far”. And now they’re in a position to have to DEFEND that,

          FLAGGED and REPORTED

      • Kate

Too bad she’s doing it because of more “fake news”.

Trump never mocked a reporter for being disabled. He mocked a reporter, using the same gestures he’s used to mock a number of people, and the reporter happened to be disabled.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8JqT2atxD8

        • MonochromeMouse

Show one source that isn’t openly biased for trump that proves that, any non-partisan source will do, we’ll wait.

          • Kate

Try actually watching the video. Truth is truth, regardless of the source.

If you want a more left-leaning take on it, there’s always Politifact, who uses the mental gymnastics that “Trump mocked the reporter, the reporter is disabled, therefore he mocked a disabled reporter”. What they don’t show is that he mocked the reporter because he’s disabled.

            http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/oct/20/donald-trump/donald-trump-says-hillary-clinton-wrong-say-he-moc/

          • MonochromeMouse

he mocked the disabled reporter by flailing his arms around with his wrists limp while talking with an over-the-top strained voice, in America even a child would recognize that that is a gesture intended to mock mentally disabled people.

          • marshlc

            I’ve watched the video.

First, I’d have to say that mocking anyone in such a fashion is the sort of thing that bad little boys get trained out of by the time they are seven or eight years old – it’s a disgraceful performance no matter who it’s aimed at.

Second, the reporter’s disability manifests in a way that is similar to the mocking gestures. So the piss poor excuse doesn’t hold water anyway.

I work in a daycare centre, and wouldn’t accept this kind of behaviour from my preschoolers. Not the mocking, and not the bullshit excuse-making.

          • Gerry Fisher

I’m so tired of the minimizing and excuse making.

          • FAEN

And he isn’t even in office yet. It’s going to be a long four years of people like Kate Of Vichy making excuses for whatever he does or doesn’t do.

          • Cuberly

…and the attempts at normalizing what would have been regarded as unacceptable.

          • MichaelJ

Kids who are over-privileged and taught that the only thing that matters is winning never get trained out of bad behavior. They believe it is their birthright to attack and humiliate others.

          • Ray Taylor

Examples soon to be in the White House.

          • Gerry Fisher

Maybe this is the best way to put it in a way that lines up with the main point of Streep’s speech, which was about decency and how important that is in our leaders. Trump had met with this reporter. Given his previous experience, he was not able to put his “spastic” routine aside given how closely it resembled physical characteristics of the reporter. That’s impulsive, thoughtless, and rude. Even if he was applying one of his typical routines–quite zealously, I might add–it was still a sign of poor character, which we’d often been told was a disqualifying attribute in someone running for President of the United States.

Stop making excuses for his bad behavior, even if it’s “very bad” but not quite at the level of “horrendous.”

          • FAEN

Vichy Kate-you wouldn’t know truth if it smacked you in the head.

          • so hot now

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

          Shut up kate

        • BlindBill

Silly kkkate. …. Who do you think should be publicly mocked by a person with power …. Now repeat your list replacing “a person with power” with the president of the United States. Now go pay your taxes, because your president does not and he wants to spend a lot of other people’s money.

          • Kate

“Who do you think should be publicly mocked by a person with power”

Let’s make it simpler. Who do I think should be mocked?

            A lying reporter.

I don’t discriminate on the basis of disability, and that includes special treatment because of it.

          • BlindBill

So sorry that you can not answer the question asked, but need to “simplify” to craft a disingenuous response. We understand you have bought in to the don-the-con version of reality, but sooner or later, you will need to come to terms with what you know in your heart is inexcusable. Until that time, please use your time and energy to defend dementia-don’s refusal to pay contractors $5,000,000 for work done …. Or donnie-dumpty’s refusal to admit tha he has no plan to make Mexico pay for a wall – no plan on cleaning up the inner cities – and no plan to eliminate ISIS …. All issues that do not lend themselves to the “simplified” thought. You may not expect more from a president than rudeness and excuses, but the rest of the world has much higher standards!

          • FAEN

Your self loathing is difficult to watch.

          • Acronym Jim
        • RemusL

That’s supposed to be better??? Yikes! So now you’re saying his usual way of mocking or denigrating something is to imitate the flailing limbs and laboured speech mechanics of mentally or physically disabled persons? So he wasn’t specifically mocking the disabilities of that reporter. Instead, every time he goes into his little performance, he is making fun of disabled people in general. Yeah, that’s a much better explanation, Kate. Thanks for the video evidence. 🙄

          • Kate

“Instead, every time he goes into his little performance, he is making fun of disabled people in general.”

            Yes.

“Yeah, that’s a much better explanation, Kate.”

          • RemusL

Nice try Kate. You and your fellow Trump acolytes are tying yourself into knots trying to excuse his abhorrent behaviour. If he truly doesn’t care that he mocks and belittles disabled people in general, why is he so adamant that he didn’t mock this specific disabled person?

BTW, choosing to not mock disabled people is not a matter of political correctness. That’s called not being a dick, which most of us grew out of sometime during grade school.

BULLSHIT! Trump is asked uncomfortable questions by a reporter who happens to have Cerebral Palsy AND JUST BY COINCIDENCE happens to imitate the uncontrollable physical movements and vocal inflections often (uncontrollably) displayed by people with Cerebral Palsy. Uh-huh. I really believe that.

Mel Gibson, abuser of women and Holocaust denier.
      Perfect conservative.

      • zhera

Such a shame. I liked him back in the 80’s-90’s. Hunkalicious. I don’t know what happened to him. Was he always an asshole?

        • Cuberly

The main reason I give Gibson a large degree of pity is because his father was a monster. Hard core drunk anti-semitic catholic that beat the shit out of him as a kid.

He sorta turned into his monster of a dad.

          • Tiger Quinn

So was Trump’s father. I don’t plan on giving him a pass.

          • Cuberly

Well, trump’s a different story. Mel Gibson’s dad didn’t run for Prez.

          • Bomer

I don’t know. My step father was an alcoholic, drug addict, child abusing cop. He used to beat the shit out of my brother and me frequently and I didn’t turn into an abusive monster. I knew back then (kindergarten to 3rd grade) that what he did to us was wrong. Instead it made me more sympathetic to people in similar situations and engendered a burning hatred for abusers.

          • zhera

            (((((((((((((Bomer))))))))))))))

          • Bomer

Thanks 🙂 It was a long time ago. The last time I saw him I was 8 and he was throwing our stuff out on to the front lawn the night my mother decided to leave him for good (he started hitting her as well. She was fine with it when it was just us kids but it was a bridge too far when it was her.)
Some scars never go away, but I survived it and at least came out of it with a deeper sense of empathy.

          • zhera

I think that kind of empathy/lack of empathy is rooted in us from the beginning. Those who have it will nurture it; those who don’t, well…

          • Bomer

You’re probably right. My brother went through the same shit and ended up an abusive self-centered asshole.

          • Robincho

That you came through it at all is miraculous. That you came through it differently than your brother shows that you are made of sterner stuff.

(At this point, only a disgusting slut would make a remark about wanting to stuff the sterns of them made of stern stuff)

          • Steverino

Good on you, Bomer. My hubby went through a similar (but not as horrific) experience growing up, but turned out to be an empathetic, non-violent liberal Democrat. Everybody else in his immediate and extended family turned out to be conservative “Christian” Republicans. Hubby’s brother, who bore the brunt of the abuse, became a drug-addled hippy and then a homophobic Jesus-freak. His sister, while for the most part supportive of us, unfortunately grew up to be a bad-tempered, narcissistic bitch, who at age 66 still acts like a 12-year old. Both have had multiple, failed relationships and marriages, and his brother has had several children by several women he never married. By contrast, hubby and I have been together almost 42 years, and he has never laid a hand on me (nor vice-versa). But we are the sick ones because Jeebus.

          • Bomer

I’m sorry your husband had to go through anything like that. I understand the fucked up family very well. My brother went hard core conservative catholic (latin mass and every thing) while I walked away from it and my mother has spent the past thirty odd years rewriting what happened in her mind so she’s the victim (she’s on hubby #4 and he’s an asshole like the ones before him). My brother always had a vicious and authoritarian streak in him, but when he hit his twenties it took over completely.

Honestly the less I see or hear from them the happier I tend to be.

          • Steverino

Yep. Needless to say, the only family we want to be around anymore, is ourselves.
            : )

          • Jeffrey

Wow, I can’t even imagine. But you didn’t let it make you a monster and define who you are. Good for you.

          • RobynWatts

            ((((Hugs)))) here as well.

          • Cuberly

Well, I think a large part of it is the ever suffering catholic stereotype. His father was very very religious.

So sorry you went through that.

          • Bomer

            Thanks. 😊

          • FAEN

            **HUGS**

          • Bomer

            😊.

          • ZhyKitty

May the FSM bless you, my dear.
            (hugs)

          • harlequin516

Good for you but your situation cant be applied to every other situation. Everyone is a product of luck and environment.

          • Bomer

The only part luck played was that a 6′ something 300 pound asshole didn’t kill us and the environment was full of people who knew what was going on but were too scared to do anything about it. The one person that might have was two states way and we couldn’t tell her because he listened in on our phone calls.
The only thing I had going for me was that I knew what I was going through was wrong and not my fault and the fact that I have a stubborn streak a mile wide and I refuse to let bastards like that win.

          • ZhyKitty

            RAmen!

          • Ragnar Lothbrok

That attitude will take you far. Rock on !

          • ChrisMorley

Perhaps your brother was simply unfortunate in becoming a second generation ‘abusive monster’ and you were lucky not to. About one third of abused children are psychologically damaged and as a consequence they go on to become abusers themselves, but why some children do and some don’t isn’t really understood.

‘Kaufman and Zigler (1987) estimated the rate of intergenerational transmission of abuse to be 30 percent (with a 5 percent margin of error). This means that about one-third of the individuals who were abused or neglected as children will abuse their own children and that
two-thirds will not. “Being maltreated as a child puts one at risk for becoming abusive but the path between these two points is far from direct or inevitable” (Kaufman and Zigler, 1987:190).’
            https://www.nap.edu/read/2117/chapter/8#223

          • Todd20036

Damn. Some victims later identify with other victims and work through it.
Some identify with abusers and become the monsters they were taught to become.
I’m glad you are here in the enlightened side.

          • McSwagg

Yeah, my daily beatings from my parents didn’t turn me into an abuser either. I am so tired of people using the excuse that their parents were abusive as the reason they are abusive. They need to quit being sniveling cowards and break the cycle.

          • SFHarry

I only feel bad for people like that when they show some attempt to overcome the abuse and become a better person than the abuser. I haven’t seen that with Gibson.

          • Ninja0980

            I agree.
Abuse is horrible but it doesn’t give you an excuse to hurt others, which is what Mel has done.

        • FAEN

He did have a nice ass when he was younger. I would have hate fucked it. Now he can just go fuck himself.

        • FAEN

          Apparently he always was.

        • Overrated. I finally saw Braveheart over the summer. What a piece of crap. Shitty script. Shitty acting. Oh and blatant and intentional homophobia. Fuck Hollywood for continuing to suck his cock. Yes he was good looking at one time but he’s a piece of shit and there are far better actors who are at least as good looking.

        • bambinoitaliano

He was protected the way Bill Cosby was protected. Hollywood tend to protect their assets at all cause. As long as the studio continue to milk their fame.

          • Oh’behr

I’m glad this “stuff” is now coming out about actors. So we can see them as people with problems and that it okay to not respect them when they are assholes rather than as heroes or as myths to be respected at all costs.

        • DesertSun59

What happened? He’s addicted to a Bronze Age religious myth.

        • David Walker

I thought he was excellent in “The Sum of Us.” A few years later he completely dropped that from his filmography. When I noticed that, I started my own personal boycott. From what I’ve heard, I haven’t missed anything.

          • IamM

            Russell Crowe?

          • David Walker

Yes. Sorry. They all look alike to me. Crowe’s deletion of “The Sum of Us” pretty much denied that he could act. Fuck him.

      • Lars Littlefield

You can see the thought bubble in his head: “What you talkin’ ’bout Willis?”

        • Miji

Or the equivalent of that which doesn’t involve quoting a small black boy.

          • Dazzer

            “”

      • What was he even doing there. Didn’t his movie flop?

    • ceeenbee

And look at that hypocritical piece of shit sitting behind him.

      • Lumpy Gaga

        He’s beside himself.

    • fuzzybits

Who’s the woman next to him shooting daggers?

      • FAEN

Riley Kehough(spelling) I believe it it. Elvis’ grand daughter.

        • fuzzybits

          Oh,Lisa Marie’s daughter.

          • FAEN

            Yes.

          • Lumpy Gaga

OMG. Elvis’ descendants have fucked Mel Gibson and Michael Jackson?

            I can’t even.

          • Amanda B. Rekendwith

Fasten your seat belt, dear. The ride’s just starting.

          • Dk6

no, again, it is not her, thankfully we can all breathe a sigh of relief, don’t know why anyone would want that guy, he certainly lost his hotness after the 80’s were over.

        • JCF

          She was nominated for something.

          • FAEN

            ‘The Girlfriend Experience’.

        • Dk6

that’s not her, in fact she was not a supporter of Trump at all & is for women’s rights

      • geoffalnutt

Looks like one of the dancers from “Simply Irresistible” by Robert Palmer. Weird..

    • Lumpy Gaga

I really love that look on Gibson’s face, like he’s evaluating. Look honey, nothing is up to you. Nothing is being run by you.

    • Bill #drain that swamp?

Waaahhh…. Meryl took away my safe space.

    • NowVoyager

“Back in 1992, Gibson caused an uproar among gays when during an interview with a Spanish newspaper, he made a graphic remark about anal sex as he complains about being “labeled” as gay because he’s an actor. He then goes on to label every gay with these remarks: “But with this look, who’s going to think that I’m gay? It would be hard to take me for someone like that. Do I sound like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them? What happens is when you’re an actor, they stuck that label on you.” ”

      http://www.contactmusic.com/mel-gibson/news/gibson-ashamed-of-gay-kiss-in-cheap-movie

      • FAEN

He should be so lucky to be gay.

      • bobbyjoe

It’s funny because a lot of gays were on to who Mel truly was long before he got caught later attacking pretty much every other minority out there.

I think sometimes people forget that back in the 90s things got to the point where Mel had to have meetings with groups like GLAAD– who back then were actually an activist organization, hard as it is to believe now– because of several homophobic statements and actions by Mel.

    • Herald

Gibson looks confused more than anything.

    • j.martindale

Gibson actually looks clueless, like he has no comprehension about what she is talking about…which is probably the case. The great problem of conservatards is their lack of empathy, which is what Streep was pointing out as a feature of the pussy-grabber in chief.

      • sq

        <>

To be consistent on matters of empathy, as well as not mocking the disabled, I recommend letting go of “….tard” or “….tards,”

        • sq

Sorry, I was trying to quote the phrase “The great problem of conservatards is their lack of empathy.”

        • j.martindale

Had I said “retarded,” I would see a need to apologize. I didn’t.

    • Read on and the majority of comments are NOT on the WOMAN, Meryl Streep, but personal male experiences, male actor Mel Gibson and male Vaughan. Just a comment.

      • Cuberly

You referring to the comment thread in that tweet?

    • gothambear

As usual Mel Gibson just looks inebriated and befuddled…

      • Todd20036

At this point, it’s him 24-7. His last “hit” was the Fashion of the Christ, and frankly, that made him such a hard-core religious fucktard that Hollywood is rather done with him

  • JoeMyGod

And I didn’t think I could love Ms Streep anymore. She still continues to amaze me !!

    • DaddyRay

Her range of characters she has played is awe inspiring

      • djcoastermark

Years ago, I read Sophie’s Choice, long before the movie was. When she was cast, I was unsure, but, wow, did she blow me away in that role. ( being pol/czech , she nailed the accent) I don’t think there will be another actor in our lifetime that will come close to what she has done.

        • houstonray

          She’s a National Treasure, that’s for sure!

      • Lars Littlefield

I loved her one role (out of many in the production) as the old Rabbi in HBO’s version of in Angels In America.

I found it incredible how Mrs. Streep laid waste to the tiny fingered, cheeto-faced, ferret wearing shitgibbon without even giving him the dignity of using his name.

    • MΩebym

So did Mrs. Obama in her New Hampshire speech post-Access Hollywood tape. Brilliant speeches both.

  • The Return of Traxley
  • Ninja0980

Oh brother, folks are actually claiming Trump didn’t mock that disabled reporter.
He sure as hell did, which is my Republican aunt and uncle refused to vote for him.

    • FAEN

Probably why my racist, shit for brains brother in law did.

      • djcoastermark

time to x that one out.

        • FAEN

He’s dead to me. Hypocritical asshole.

    • FAEN

It’s amazing how Dumpster voters justify and rationalize their vote.

A Handy Guide for Understanding Trump Supporters.

        1. “We didn’t have all this race stuff before Obummer!”

        Translation:
As a white person, I find it objectionable that a duly elected black president of the United States has served in office.

        2. “Everyone knew Trump was a successful businessman before he was elected!”

        Translation:
I am disinterested in any obvious conflict of interests or potential corruption re: Donald Trump and his administration. Donald Trump says what I wish to hear.

        3. “I put up with Obummer for eight years, so you can just deal with President Trump for eight years!”

        Translation:
        See #1 above.

        4. “Trump’s the Real Deal!”

        Translation:
Donald Trump says what I wish to hear in a manner comprehensive to me.

        5. “He’ll make America great again!”

        Translation:
Donald Trump objects to the same people I find objectionable/says what I wish to hear.

        6. “We’ll finally have a First Lady with class!”

        Translation:
        Melania Trump is white.

        7. “Who cares if the Russians spy on us? We spy on them too! Get over it and move on!”

        Translation:
Any mention/commenting re: Donald Trump’s documented business associations (and those of his advisors/cabinet selections) in Russia and the confirmed role the Russian government played in subverting the presidential election, as confirmed by 17 offices of U.S. intelligence, is objectionable/irrelevant to me. Donald Trump says what I wish to hear.

        8. “Putin is a strong leader!”

        Translation:
Vladimir Putin says complimentary things about Donald Trump.

        9. “The Media hates Trump!”

        Translation:
I find it objectionable when some journalists/media outlets have quoted Donald Trump verbatim, while wishing to ignore:
        1. “the media” is not a monolithic enterprise.
        2. Donald Trump built his political presence on the favor of his media exposure.

        10. “The Dem’s are just as hateful!”

        Translation:
I find it objectionable when commenters on social media point out any clearly apparent social/economic/financial hypocrisy/dishonesty of the republican political party and its elected leaders.

        11. “Trump tells it like it is!”

        Translation:
Donald Trump objects to the same people I do/says what I wish to hear/speaks in short declarative sentences with simple words.

        12. “I don’t care about his tax returns!”

        Translation:
While I have not objected to, and/or supported ongoing questions/inquiries regarding President Obama’s birth certificate, religious affiliations, nationality of birth, and allegiance to the United States (and Donald Trump’s prominent role in advancing such questions), I vehemently object to any inquiries/disclosures related to Donald Trump’s tax returns.

          ^THIS THIS THIS^

        • Nasty Girl Brianna

Translations 1-12: I am a corrupt, racist fascist, and Donald Trump speaks for me.

    • Cuberly

That and the Gold Star family was the reason two elderly relatives didn’t even vote. Yeah, wished they’d voted for Hillz but oh well…

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

At least they had some standards. Hopefully, they’re still grossed out by Trump and manage not to vote GOP if the party vomits enough another bastard like him for 2020.

        • Cuberly

My aunt and uncle have a deaf daughter, my cousin of course. They’re very protective of her and loathe that type of vicious mocking.

    • JCF
    • Michael

In his early Monday morning tweet Twitler said “For the 100th time, I never “mocked” a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him “groveling” when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad.” That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

Hey! Your post has a little dancing figure inside it. How is that possible?

      • Cuberly

They just used a gif as their avatar.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

Can all our avatars be animated?

          • Lars Littlefield

If you use a gif that doesn’t use a ton of memory.

          • johncAtl

Doesn’t Disqus have enough problems already?

          • JCF

            Upvoted!

          • Cuberly

            Ha!

          • Cuberly

If gif is supported it should be ok.

    • zhera

A huge mirror on his bedroom wall, covering the whole bed. Somebody likes himself a bit more than he should.

      • Cuberly

        It all looks so tatty.

        • Lumpy Gaga

She’s so swishy in her satin and tat.

In her frock coat and bippity-boppity hat.
Oh, God, I could do better than that’

      • Snarkaholic

‘Objects in this mirror are much tinier than they appear.’

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

For all those Breitbarters whining about Rump being criticized, Rump isn’t Emperor and even Roman citizens bitched about their Emperors a LOT.

    • Lars Littlefield

I’m waiting to see what kind of boojum Omarosa thinks she can cast over those of us who don’t kneel before him. LOL!

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

She needs to remember what happened to the last president with an enemies list. He had to leave in shame and what good he did is way overshadowed.

  • Robert Adams

Forgive me if someone has already said this, but the fun part was that Streep never mentioned his name.

  • Trump has run such a shitty campaign for the Presidency that he does not even deserve a courtesy flush. Screw him. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/98886f16738f7bc1ceebcd3e6a91bbeae79d98134cf81cacbae1eac769da95f8.gif

      • perversatile
      • Lumpy Gaga

        Why ask why?

      • MichaelJ

I think this is the kitty that loves to flush the toilet. His human keeps wondered why their water bill was extremely high, and at some point thought to put a camera in the bathroom. This is what they discovered.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I hope they managed to stopped the excessive flushing.

          • MichaelJ

I suspect all they had to do was make sure they kept the bathroom door closed. The bills were outrageous– like over $1,000 a month if I remember correctly.

  • It’s on bitches! Here’s the fake news site “Breitbart” headline…
“Meryl Streep Uses Lifetime Achievement Award Speech to Bash Donald Trump”

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

She deserves another achievement award for bashing him so elegantly.

    • boobert

She never mentioned his name. How do they know who she was talking about?

      • Mike__in_Houston

Something about a shoe and fitting…

        • clay

The last two GOP US presidents– each caused a Constitutional crisis to win the position, both had problems with shoes.

      • AJ Drew

something about tiny hands bloodied by unexpected brass balls?

    • See the difference here is that Meryl actually has achievements, Donald only has his multiple bankruptcies.

      • Lumpy Gaga

Donald’s Hollywood Spirit Animal is Randy Quaid.

    • Mike__in_Houston

Oh, fuck Breitbart. They can stick it up their ass.

Bravi to Ms. Streep and all the other winners who called out trump and his cronies tonight. The job of all the rest of us is to keep the spotlight on those assholes 24/7, and I think we’re off to a good start. trump, pence, ryan, comey, assange, putin and the rest may think this was over on Nov. 8 but, as my dear sainted parents used to say, they got another think comin’.

      • JCF

        The appropriate response.

      • Cuberly

She’s a fairly freshly minted far far far right talking head. BTW-she’s aggressively ignorant. Rather easy to make fun of. Oh, and she’s a raging racist.

        • Ninja0980

Just like the person she interned for, Rep. Kristi Noem of South Dakota.

          • Cuberly

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Since she’s complaining about the complaining, she’s a snowflake by her own definition. We should shut down these people by pointing out that their bitching about the mocking makes THEM the snowflakes and that they should show their superiority by being quiet and challenge them to do so.

      • Cuberly

The thread on her tweet says as much. It’s kinda funny.

Love how they’re ignoring Streep’s comments on bullying.

      • zhera

That would require mental capability beyond the shower drain scum from which she originated.

      • Lumpy Gaga

“Simple question, TL: DO you EVER stop complaining?”

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I wonder what % are from Russia.

      • DaddyRay

Trump and his supporters should expect it given how much they criticized Obama these past 8 years.

Russians just don’t know what it is like to have the freedom to criticize their leader.

        • AJ Drew

…but Ruskie leaders know how to prevent such a thing, yes?

          • Dreaming Vertebrate

… a sprinkle of polonium in one opponent’s tea, tends to silence many other opponents.

Well kids…the time is near. Tomorrow off to Seattle for elbow replacement surgery Tuesday, so I will be offline for a while. Please know that while I am recovering I will be thinking of ways to mess with the asshole-in-chief and his supporters.

What can you do for me? Nothing, other than to provide support and love to all in our LGBT community and our allies, which we should do every day anyway. That is what sets us apart from the haterz.

    • DaddyRay

      Speedy Recovery

Nice way of describing how different we are from the haterz at the end. Much love to you and big Texas hugs (but I’ll be careful of the elbow when hugging). Get well soon!!!

“Doc, when will I be able to whack off again??”

      • DaddyRay

      • AJ Drew

ohhh, in this case, there’s a sad version of that joke that starts with, “It only hurts when I do this…” (sigh)

        • Lumpy Gaga

“Doc, will I be able to whack off?”
          “I don’t see why not.”

          • Bomer

  • MichaelJ

I like that the community she urged people to defend was journalists, who are under attack all over the world. Abolishing freedom of the press has been one of the key means by which authoritarian governments establish and maintain their power. Trump declared war on them almost a year ago when he said he was out to change libel laws, and give how newspapers how most every major newspaper did not endorse him, I am sure more than ever he will go after them as viciously as as possible.

Streep could have easily just shared some platitude about the importance of art in the world with an appeal to support the arts. But she went beyond that, in a meaningful way, Thanks Meryl. I just made my donation.

How do you fix hypocrisy? trumpsters are going nuts because they feel a respected actress shouldn’t be allowed to express her views. Yet because they are behind trump , their views are more important. You really CAN’T fix stupid!

    • AJ Drew

The Internet comment sections divide… but IRL? Most folks who have a decent job and home are oddly silent. How to wake them up?

      • DaddyRay

I have a professional job and do not talk about politics at work with coworkers at the office – at lunch is a different story but never in the office

        • AJ Drew

I get that, I do. A gazillion years ago I worked corporate. But I have been at my current job for decades now which has me moving around a lot, mostly to rural areas. Eh, in the end, folks are folks and one-on-one they don’t care who/what you are as long as you’re “real.” HOW to get that to a national level, I don’t know.

    • Snarkaholic

“We donut wunt no wimmens tellin us whut tu doo!”

  • Ninja0980

Already the talk of liberals and how this election proves no one cares blah blah.
As someone whose husband has been having to get up at 4 am and work until 5 or 6 at night five to six times on a major project the past several months I am for one am sick of hearing how we don’t know what hard work is or what sacrifice is because we vote Democrat or live in a blue state.
The “real Americans” can take their holier then though attitude and shove it.

  • pj

how dare anyone call out the disrespectful behavior we have been subjected to for the past almost two years. of course the bully will attack tomorrow. bravo to la streep for lecturing this ignorant thug.

    • AJ Drew

ahem… eight years. Eight years. 8 years.

  • Jim

She is so right! Americans have chosen a loathsome pig as a leader and as an example for their children!

  • AJ Drew

Streep called out DT about that too-ugly and too-under-reported incident when DT dared his crowd to support him when he tried to humiliate a disabled reporter… and his crowd did support his ugliness.

“And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

    • Cuberly

“…because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.”

That was the moment my jaw hit the floor. She went after his supporters right there. The up-end the norms of acceptable behavior crowd.

  • I was channel surfing and just happened to catch the part where Streep was talking about “three of the most despised groups in the country: Hollywood, foreigners and the press” and I couldn’t imagine any of the rest of the show being as interesting, funny and meaningful as that. So I settled on a “Gravity Falls” rerun w/ dinner.

Whew. My birthday ended an hour ago.

Y’know, Sleeping Beauty spends all day in bed and she’s called a Disney Princess.

I do it and I’m called “Clinically Depressed.”

Life just isn’t fair, but at least tomorrow is NOT my birthday.

    • Ander

      Happy belated birthday.
      Many good wishes to you.

    • AJ Drew

Well… though I celebrate anyone joyfully trudging though another year… sleeping through it… that ain’t it, kid. (get the reference? no? ok…)

Meh, Happy belated B’day Treant. Do something that once made you happy. (and you have my permission to yell at me to fook off while doing so… if you actually are doing so.)

      • Treant

Strangely, most of the things that make me happy at 48 also made me happy at 12. Except Legos. They’ve totally boiled the creativity right out of those things, and they’re hard to see these days anyway. They didn’t get smaller, my eyes got worse.

        • AJ Drew

If you were ever careless with those Legos, stepping on one in the dark is an experience one would never forget… OWWW! So, Legos are not the happy thing. What else ya got?

          • Treant

I have several houseplants that I’ve owned since age 12. One since age 6.

I suppose I could go finger-paint but, messy.

          • AJ Drew

Not just one, but several, 36yo houseplants… that’s impressive.

As for finger-painting, meh, messy is ok, potentially fun, but I suppose the medium matters.

          • AJ Drew

I will stop now, but… Happy Birthday Treant, you are alive. You are still here. Stay so. Folks like you and me got shit to do, let’s do it.

          • wayne

Me leafing through a plant book and pointing: I killed one of those. And I killed one of those. And I killed one of those…

          • Treant

            Murderer.

          • BobSF_94117

I assume the house plant is made of plastic.

          • Treant

Living! There are plenty of plants that have lifespans at least that long and are compatible with lower-light indoor conditions. Growth rates are slower on most of those, and they tend to tolerate cutting back quite well.

Others are shorter-lived, but can be regenerated.

          • BobSF_94117

            I remain in awe.

          • Treant

Shh. It’s easy; get stuff like corn plant, Mother-In-Law’s Tongue, Shefflera, or, really, anything in the Dracaena family.

Water when dry, and don’t let it stay dry for too long (all these are forgiving, however, and the tongue can stay dry for months at a time). Put in the correct light. Feed once or twice a year.

Most people screw it up on the watering.

          • BobSF_94117

My only long-term successful houseplant was a shefflera named Sneath. Sadly, he outgrew the living room and had to be rehomed. I guess I should have kept him in a darker space.

          • Treant

Or take a cutting, pop it into water, and re-plant the freshly-rooted daughter as Sneath, Junior while re-homing Sneath.

I rehomed an Areca palm when it hit nine feet tall and six wide. I just couldn’t keep it any longer.

          • Jerry

I have a philodendron at home, in a basket planter from my mother’s funeral in 1991, and a sort of rubber tree plant at the office from around 1997. Anything that would take any actual knowledge or care would be dead.

Sleep is underrated. There is nothing better than spending 9 to 11 hours curled up in a ball if it ease your body and mind. Dreams are for a reason.

    • Ninja0980

I have a happy lamp for this time of year.
      Seasonal depression is a bitch.

  • KQCA

I do believe we need a woman’s sensibility to make it through this coming maze of madness. Ladies, lead the way. We’re with ya.

  • Cuberly

And on this note…ciao. Bed time.

Wow, tomorrow is going to be right-wing meltdowns from all directions isn’t it.

I wonder what kind of movie or Broadway play someone is going to make out of the Rump Residency.

Yeah, but, will DT’s character learn how to speak proper English?

          • carrot festival

It’s the Bizarro post truth version. He drags everyone down instead of being lifted up.

          • AJ Drew

lolz… hmm… Audrey at the finale of My Fair Lady, or… something still archaic yet… kinda happy, maybe…

      “Donald Trump: the Opera”
written by Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee
The musical contains irreverent treatment of Christian claims, extensive obscenities, and surreal sexual images, such as a troupe of “tucked” tap-dancing Ku Klux Klan members and goose-stepping Russian internet warriors. The musical is completely sung through, with only two exceptions: the title character, Donald, who reads broken-English tweets throughout the production; and Satan, who has a brief speech on Hitler, Putin and Streep.

Act I: Trump’s frenzied audience greets him as he arrives at one of his notorious rallies.
Act II: Purgatory; Trump lies dying in the arms of a Secret Service agent, both shot by one of Trump’s inadequately trained personal security guards who was trying to shoot an unarmed black man.
Act III: Hell; Trump is broken down by his many attacks on various persons, but unable to make an honest accounting, he is unable to leave.

I think Meryl Streep will break the internet!

      LOVE her too!!!!

    • The_Wretched

I was introduced to her in ‘How to get away with murder’ from ABC but on Netflix. She was pretty damn amazing. However, she’s next to a villain on the show and openly bi. It’d be nice to have bi character who isn’t deeply flawed on tv.

    • Bomer

Oh, how I loathe that bastard.

      • Ross

        Loath x 1,000.

    • Michael R

One thing she did was to stop and say : we don’t forget
ANYTHING that you have done , and we will hold you
responsible for your actions ( very important ) ,
where the media just moves on to his next absurdity .

    • TuuxKabin

Mr. Trump said. “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.” He’s been lurking and going into dressing rooms in women’s apparel stores and departments now?

      • Johnny Wyeknot

        Nobody buys dresses in washington

        • TuuxKabin

Where do you shop? Up here when you come for opera? /s

I could have asked the proverbial version of why not? =;o)

          • Johnny Wyeknot

Tom Ford dresses me. But not Melania.

      • Silver Badger

They just don’t have his size.

  • TimCA

Good for her! She has a platform and I’m thrilled she wasn’t shy about using it. If we have any chance at all of surviving the next few years in any recognizable semblance as a democratic society (assuming the unbalanced egotist doesn’t destroy us first via nuclear conflict) we’ll need everyone continually speaking up. Whether it’s at the local diner or the garden club or during casual chit chat at the bus stop while waiting to go to work, start speaking out. This is crisis time and we need to put away those little social mores that lead us to self censure. Freedom of speech, press freedoms and basic human decency shouldn’t be viewed as partisan political debate. Whoever you are, wherever you are, it’s imperative we unabashedly make public our concerns and views about how those now wielding power are damaging our country. Ultimately there will be no safety in silence.

    • The_Wretched

      Is that one real?

  • What class and grace!

  • M Jackson

Meryl is an institution in a class by herself. Meryl couldn’t give a single fuck what those people think about her. What, they’re going to boycott the DVD of “Florence Foster Jenkins”? Honestly, Meryl
    will be just fine.

    • zhera

They’ll burn all their VHS tapes with Streep movies. That’ll show her!

      • M Jackson

Meryl’s gonna take a big hit in Trailerpark U.S.A.
They’re gonna boycott the DVD release of “Florence Foster Jenkins”!

It’s fortunate he’s not an important person.

Wait, what? Really? … Treant wept.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

I’m afraid the only thing you will have to dry your tears for the next four years is sandpaper.

    • zhera

Meryl Streep over-rated? Only in tRumpland.

And the video doesn’t lie, Donnie. We all saw what you did.

  • Slightly OT…in the montage they showed a scene from The Seduction of Joe Tynan with Alan Alda. I have looked high and low for a video of that film. It’s the only Streep film I’ve never seen and I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. Not in a library or for sale. Does anyone know if it’s available anywhere.

    • JohnFS

Amazon have it. It’s available in the UK as a US import (region 1) so if you’re in the US you should be able to order it.

    • beariac

I’ve got a digital copy (to view on a computer) if you’d like me to dropbox it to you?

  • TuuxKabin

    THE STORY, from “The Skimm”:

Last night, Jimmy Fallon took a sleeping pill and hosted the Golden Globes. Meryl Streep picked up the slack.

    • She went all diva! Kind of like what Aretha did at last year’s Kennedy Center Honors. Or what Cher does always. Or what Meryl does in every movie. The righties are outraged. *snicker*

      • TuuxKabin

        Snicker, snicker!!

  • dcurlee

    Gotta love her

  • Bj Lincoln

She was awesome! Beautiful and classy. I almost burst into tears with the quote from Carrie Fisher. “Take your broken heart and turn it into art.”

  • Paul Forsyth

Brava!!!! Such a well worded thought

  • bdsmjack

    Thank you, Meryl Streep.

    That’s all.

  • Bared Bear

RWNJs are incestuated over this. They’re vowing to never again buy one of her albums.

    • Bj Lincoln

She doesn’t make albums. She makes movies. Damn good ones at that.

      • Bared Bear

        Yep. That she does.

    • IamM

“Incestuated”? Like Lot? the one ‘good’ man in the Republican town of Sodom?

      • Bared Bear

Yep. Eggsactly. Good ol’ angry Lot… the proto-RWNJ of Xmases past. Lot knows that that pillar of salt that used to be your uppity sister/wife ain’t going to lick itself back to the promised land.

  • Sam_Handwich

    wow

  • TJay229

    Meryl Streep is… Simply, AHmaze-ing!

    • John P.

Best actress since Bette Davis and a person to love!

  • Acronym Jim

Notice, not only did Streep never mention him by name, she also never uttered his upcoming title.

THAT is how you go after a narcissist.

Bravo, Ms. Streep (has she been “damed” yet?).

    • Igby

“You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you.”

      Thanks to Carly Simon

  • DesertSun59

Breitbart commenters have already incited violence against the entire State of California in previous articles, asking Trump to open dozens of lawsuits against our government. The sole reason is because we are the only holdout in this nation against the incoming fascist regime.

Now Trump openly Tweets against Streep.

The GOP can quite literally focus on NOTHING good. They can ONLY focus on hate, strife and all that brings on division. You can not point to anything good when it comes to them. Nothing.

    • Steve Teeter

Someone, I don’t remember who, put it very neatly about the Rs: There is no kindness in them.

  • ColdCountry

With all that’s going on, and the feeling of impending doom that has been around lately, this reminds me of something very important: as a country, we can, and are used to, speaking our minds, gathering like-minded folks, and actively working against the government if we disagree with it. (Can the citizens of very many other countries say that?) We are so accustomed to our right of freedom of speech, and our tight to protest, that it would take a major change for Trump to end it, a change that I’m not sure he could engender. Governing Americans must be a lot like herding cats, very vocal and entitled cats, and I doubt it can be accomplished by force – though brainwashing might work on some. I’m just postulating that the same spirit of cussedness that got us into this mess may well get us out.

  • Gerry Fisher

This is what it looks like to resist. More of this, please. From everyone who chooses to remain in the US.

  • Bad Tom

Take your broken heart, and make it into art.

It takes a strong and brave person to do that. Thank you for inspiring us all, Meryl Streep and Carrie Fisher.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

It was a skillfully and deftly delivered set of slashes, each deeper than the last and very effective. From not mentioning his name to completely ignoring his soon to be status and title. Truly, a death by a thousand cuts, and for a narcissist like Cheetolini, it is the perfect repudiation.

Here’s hoping others, in media, entertainment and every day life take note, because this is how it’s done.

  • karmanot

    Brilliant!

  • fuow

Well put. Pity so many gay men couldn’t be bothered to vote in November – now we’re in the shit, waste high.
Seriously, the rethugs didn’t win, we lost. Big difference. And are we learning anything from it (as in: Voting matters)?
    Nope. Not a thing.
