Kim Burrell Dropped From Gospel Honors Events

The Associated Press reports:

The performing rights organization BMI is the latest group to distance itself from gospel singer Kim Burrell after video surfaced of her referring to gays and lesbians as perverted. A statement from BMI released Friday said Burrell will no longer be honored and she was pulled from their annual BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music event scheduled for Jan. 14 in Atlanta. The organization said it wanted the focus to remain on the songwriters and the music. TV host Ellen DeGeneres also uninvited Burrell from appearing on her show, where she was scheduled to sing “I See Victory” with Pharrell Williams from the soundtrack of the new movie “Hidden Figures.” Messages seeking comment from Burrell were not immediately returned.

Burrell’s local Houston radio show has also been canceled.

  • Brad Henderson

Every day there’s five different things in my newsfeed about Kim Burrell being cancelled for this and disinvited to that. At this point, girl, just clear your damn calendar and start over.

    • ElenorRigby

It looks like everyone else is clearing it for her.

      • Todd20036

She can go sing on the christian martyr circuit, and I hear dumb Donald has a few open spots at his inauguration.

        • The Return of Traxley

She, the Barronetta, and the pissy cake deniers should form an act and take it on the road.

I can’t believe Kim Burrell got this far in the gospel music industry without realizing that gay men pretty much run the show there.

    • Natty Enquirer

But aren’t they the “good” ones who don’t flaunt it and wouldn’t ever dream of asking to be married?

    • Todd20036

Not just that, but more and more sponsors are unwilling to embrace bigotry as it has become unprofitable.

    • TJay229

      She knew.
She just got to comfortable, and didn’t remember that cellphones were around.

    • zhera

She knew. And she probably doesn’t care about that. As long as she can benefit from it and still spout her hate, she’s probably fine. Might even have gay ‘friends’. No point in being a holy godbotherer if you can look down on someone else.

    • JCF

Nor realizing she was opening her bigoted piehole in ubiquitously video’d 2016-17.

  • ceeenbee

Once again, proof that bigotry is very expensive.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

But it can be lucrative if the bigot plays his/her cards right. Mz. Thing played this hand badly, but that doesn’t mean she’s out of the game.

  • “Actions have consequences.”

    • Todd20036

      So does speech.

She can spew whatever she wants. No one is stopping her.

But we don’t have to listen to her.

And sponsors don’t have to pay her.

And award shows don’t have to honor her.

      • The Return of Traxley

Yet so many, especially the radical Christian terrorists, don’t get that.

Free Speech only guarantees that the government will not impose censorship on what you say.

Free speech does not guarantee that private individuals and organizations are bound by law to enter into any kind of relationship, business or otherwise.

Again, Kimmy. Don’t shit where you eat. Do not collect 500 dollars. Do not pass Go.

      • kaydenpat

She and her ilk are learning all that the hard way.

    • Frostbite

But but but her 1st amendment rights!

    • Bomer

You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve pointed that out to certain family members. They just retell events so they come out the victim though.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        dammed them!

  • Todd20036

If people react this strongly to a gospel singer being openly anti LBGT, maybe Trump really cannot pass RFAs.

At least, there’d be so many safe states to be in rather than having to flee the country.

Still going to update my passport, though.

    • bambinoitaliano

There is a sliver of chance he might not push through. When it comes down to profitability versus religious tyranny, money always win out with someone like con man Trump.

      • Todd20036

Yeah, true. Again, I’m still going to update my passport. It’s a good idea to do so anyway

    • Tiger Quinn

I apologize, but I think the lack of response is because she’s black. If some half religious white woman were being called out, they’d be covering her night and day.

      • zhera

        Kim Davis, anyone?

      • Librarykid

The thing is, radical right Christian Terrorists don’t give a cold god dam about her because she’s black. Sorry, Jesus.

  • james1200

The real reason she’s not going is that no one will do her hair and makeup. Fucking with us is COSTLY.

    • TJay229

      This is true.
I have the same wonder about Poor White people who vote Republican or Gay Republicans.

      • Dana Chilton

There are whole books written about why people vote against their best interests. CNN did an interview yesterday with a guy in Florida who voted for Trump but is begging him to keep Obamacare. He said that if it was just his own selfish interests he would have voted Hillary but he did what he thought was in the best interest of his country. See what he did? She had the better policy but as a Republican he had to justify his Trump vote by claiming he was selfless

        • TJay229

Yeah… It reminds me of this four years ago: https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=_0lbk_pqclc

Piss Poor Racist White People… Voting against their own interests just cause…. The better man was Black.

        • Librarykid

Selfless: Racist, Misogynist, Stone Bigot, probably really religious, and very stupid. I hope he gets to experience Republican Tenderness when he needs it most.

        • Mike__in_Houston

          He’s full of shit too.

Millions of people have been benefiting from Obamacare, so voting for trump was by definition not “in the best interest of his country.” And now he is having to beg trump and the republicans, who don’t give a shit about him and never did, to let him keep his healthcare, which would have been one of several givens under Hillary, no begging required, thank you.

He, along with the rest of us, is having to pay the penalty for paying *no* attention to the news–it isn’t as though the republicans were keeping their intentions a secret, despite anything that trump might have been saying–and for believing his inbred relatives and friends who, also paying *no* attention to the news, kept telling him that trump was best for the country (i.e., that he was a man).

I’m 65 and will have to keep working to keep my insurance and because I don’t know how badly my Social Security will be going south. The fact that I at least have the option to keep working, and was probably going to anyway, is some small consolation for the fact that otherwise all I have left is the opprtunity to laugh at these idiots who are quickly realizing how badly they fucked themselves over last November, even more quickly than I have been predicting all along.

          • Dana Chilton

You’re right… The man said his life would be in danger without Obamacare but the risk of even that couldn’t make him vote Democrat.. his justification, that his vote would benefit the country is more than BS… if his life is in danger because of his vote so are tens of thousands of others… he hurt the country, he didn’t help it. No matter what though the guy will always find a way to justify himself in his own head

        • Mike__in_Houston

Can you point me to one or two of those books? Of all the non-intuitive things in our culture today, this is one of the non-intuitivest, and I would love a chance to understand it better.

        • seant426

FL seems to be a mecca for morons.

          • Dana Chilton

If the Florida panhandle were to be reincorporated into Alabama, Florida would no longer be a swing state.

          • Danieruw

How do we make that happen? Can those of us in South FL kick those counties out of the state? Asking for a friend…

    • Dana Chilton

But, what was it like growing up sexy as fk? :)

    • Jerry

Growing up rural and white, I was forced to go to church until I was 18…including the church choir. As mentioned in previous posts, my religious grandparents had paid me, around age 13-14, to read both OT and NT…and caused me to question all of it, leading eventually to atheism. BTW, I was also taken out to my first gay bar a few months before my 16th birthday in 1979.

      • Todd20036

        Your grandparents were pretty cool!

        • Jerry

I don’t think the reading had the intended effect. My mother was also a study in contrasts, being both religious and a science teacher…though she reconciled the two somehow. None of them were very pleased when they found out I had been going with older friends every weekend to gay bars.

      • Dana Chilton

I grew up in a church that would have called your church liberal and unchristian for even having a choir.. lol… when people ask me why I don’t believe the bible is the word of god I say it’s because I’ve read it.

        • Jerry

Yeah, it was fairly mainstream protestant. Though I had to attend every Sunday, I remember being constantly pestered by a few other kids, who went to the hard-line evangelical churches, to attend their church…never did and really didn’t have much use for my own church in the later teen years.

  • TJay229

Now she knew she could NOT go on any awards show, especially in…. Black Gay Headquarters (aka Atlanta Georgia) and be seen, come on Kim.. You know betta. 😂

  • Tiger Quinn

And you’ll notice the Right doesn’t come screaming to her defense. For some reason.

    • Clive Johnson

    • Librarykid

No, because she is a black woman, bigoted though she might be.

      • Todd20036

That’s the conundrum for religion organization in a capitalist country like US. The religious fraction had detracted from its core purpose into profit making corporation that relies on mass marketing. Like any corporation that is sensitive to bad public relation, sometimes it has to show the corporation have to act in good faith not to alienate its customer base. Extreme violence and oppression are not profitable. At least not in countries that thrives in capitalism. As I see it, right now, you have those fraction playing the fear and terror into getting the support and you have those who endear themselves to their base with the more neutral and positive message. I like to think that those that play the negative angle will eventually exhaust their base while the other more positive fraction will win out in the longer game.

  • Nowhereman

I’d suggest that Kim Burrell get together with Kim Davis and form a Kimmy club, but I have a feeling that Kim B is probably not into black people either.

  • GayOldLady

When you go on an anti-gay, anti-lesbian rant just days before you’re booked to appear on the most popular daytime show on television, that’s hosted by a lesbian, you’re crazy to expect a different outcome. Moral of this story is, Don’t fuck with the lesbians, don’t fuck with the gay men!

Now I’m waiting for some christo-nut to compare this to christian bakers. Come on dumb ass, I dare you!

    • edrex

well. she baked her cake and now she can eat it. alone.

      • GayOldLady

Amen dont fuck the allies of th LGBTQ community

    • KnownDonorDad

I compared it to the bakers in that they both expect that they can say or do discriminatory things and be free from consequence because of religion.

      • GayOldLady

The other day we had a troll who tried to draw an analogy between Ellen withdrawing her invitation to Kim Burrell and the “bakers” who refused to bake a cake for a gay person. I explained that Ellen was paying Kim Burrell as a guest and she had every right to withdraw her invitation, but a baker has no right to refuse to sell goods because of sexual orientation. I personally would love to see all of these gay-hating businesses refuse service to our community by putting a sign on the door that says “We do not serve LGBTQ”. But they won’t do that because they’d destroy their business when our straight allies quit patronizing them.
They’d rather pick us off one-by-one while claiming their religion made them do it.

  • Mark Anderson

I feel a Donna Summer moment coming on. An apology to the LGBTQ Community, for being a bigot.

  • Dana Chilton

None of this changes her mind or the minds of others who hold these views. Now she’s a martyr. Now her and her follower’s homophobic views are reinforced

    • Natty Enquirer

Somehow I think “pastor of Love & Liberty Fellowship” doesn’t pay as well as “movie star gospel singer.”

      • Dana Chilton

There’s a lot of money in Religion. In any event, she’s a hypocrite and a great representation of a scam artist. Still, I don’t want her and her brand of BS to be given martyr status.

        • Chucktech

So, what would you have done about her?

Let her try to play her martyr card. She’ll discover there’s no money doing that in her waning 15 minutes. Not this martyr, anyway.

          • Dana Chilton

You think this will make her realize she’s wrong about our community? That she’s been preaching a hateful and disgusting message? No. This means she’ll blame our community. This means (to her) that her message was right. This means that her followers will grow in their hate for us. This means that others (like what happened with the florist in Washington and the photographer couple in NM) will use her to push their hateful politics against us. The “win” in this story is that there are people who support us and don’t want to associate with her homophobic idiocy not that she’s losing money. I worry that in making her a martyr we’ll be losing support from people who might otherwise be allies.

          • Ben in Oakland

If you think that this will make antigay bigots more inflamed in their hatred, a hatred usually disguised as sincere religious belief, then you simply don’t understand antigay bigots.

If you think that not standing up to bigotry will somehow make them like us more, you are not paying attention.

          • KnownDonorDad

          • Chucktech

Her followers who already hate homos already hate homos, so no loss there, and their hateful politics are already being pushed against us. I say we crucify her in her dying 15 minutes.
