Cher To Star In Lifetime Movie About Flint Water Crisis

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Cher is headed for Lifetime. The iconic singer-actress has been tapped to star in Flint, a TV movie based on the Flint, Mich., water crisis, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and Katie Couric will executive produce, alongside Cher. Bruce Beresford will direct the movie from Sony Pictures Television. Barbara Stepansky will pen the script. Cher will portray a Flint resident whose family is impacted by the water crisis.

The drama is based on events in Flint about the poor management that led to water poisoning as well as the human elements of the residents who suffered — and whose voices were ignored. The movie was inspired by a February 2016 cover story in Time Magazine called “The Toxic Tap,” by Josh Sanburn. Zadan and Meron’s Sony Pictures TV-based Storyline Entertainment optioned the rights to the story.

Cher has been tweeting regularly about Flint since the crisis began. But she mostly attacks Trump and the GOP.

“about the poor management that led to water poisoning”

Poor management? How about the “I don’t give a damn about Black folks” takeover by Republican state officials all over Michigan?

  • The Return of Traxley

Cast Viola Davis as the pediatrician who sounded the alarm with medical evidence and I’m so there.

Governor Dickhead Snyder and his AG must be having fits and consulting lawyers right about now.

    LOL

  • Silver Badger

So many examples of Republican mismanagement. Serious question, are there any examples of Republican good management?

    • The Return of Traxley

      Um… give me a minute…….

      I got nothing.

    • Gustav2

Now, now, Ohio’s Gov Kasich has cut taxes on the rich and large corporations so much government services are being cut.

It is what they really want.

      • Ninja0980

Cuomo isn’t much better in some regards.
The fact he is content to let our state senate stay in Republican hands should automatically take him out of the running for 2020.

Nixon created the EPA. Former Oregon Governor Tom McCall tore up a freeway in Portland and put in Waterfront Park.

That’s all I’ve got. It’s sad that today’s Republicans are diametrically opposed to the good achieved by yesterday’s Republicans.

      • Silver Badger

I forgot about Nixon. He also got us out of Vietnam. It is and interesting thing that Richard Nixon was the best they have.

        • Acronym Jim

I won’t give Nixon any points for Vietnam since he meddled in and scuttled LBJ’s settlement deal between the North and the South before the 1968 election.

Opening relations with China was a good thing, though.

Didn’t Nixon start the Universal Healthcare discussion?

        • JCF

No, I think that was Truman! Nixon had an offer for Universal Guaranteed Income (the mind boggles, c. 2017). The Dems thought that minimum income proposal wasn’t high enough and scuppered the plan. [IIRC, that minimum in 2017 dollars would be higher than people get in welfare checks now]

      • JCF

There was a race for Sherriff of Yolo County, CA, c. 1983. At a town (Davis, ala UC Davis, where I was in school) forum, the question came up re marijuana. The Dem candidate was bog-standard “Lock ’em up!”. The Rep candidate “not unless we’re at a stoplight, and someone blows smoke in my face.”

The first and ONLY time in my lifetime, I’ve voted R!

  • Rick

But who will the orchids play?

    • Gustav2

And will they get scale for being extras?

  • Michael R

Gypsies , Tramps and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder

  • Natty Enquirer

Love Cher but her pesona is too strong for this role. “Hey honey, come look, Cher’s drinking leaded in Flint!”

    • another_steve

      Lol.

I dunno. It’s an important news story… but a movie about a water crisis?

I’m bettin’ it won’t be one of Lifetime’s all-time blockbuster sensations.

  • Rick Snyder isn’t calling the water debacle a result of racism and classism because no one sat down and specifically decided not to fix the problem because the populace was African American and poor white people. They simply refused to listen to the powerless people, refused to recognize that water should not be brown and smell, and decided the people were whining because they didn’t want to drink the Flint River. Racism and classism doesn’t need to be overt.

While the GOP machine tries to pull an Orwell and make this a Federal problem, it is a state problem. And it is an illustration of the weakness of GOP’s love affair with the concept of small government and demonstrates the necessity to assure that state agencies are actually competent. Fifty discrete agencies need more oversight not less.

If we are going to decentralize key missions as the GOP insists we must, they need to be held to a real standard. Michigan failed and negligent harm to children resulted. It wasn’t a good test case for States right.

  • David From Canada

Cher is going to sing an updated version of one of her big hits in this movie: “Bang Bang (Flint’s Water Shot Me Down).

  • Circle Thomas

Look, I love Cher, but Flint is a city that’s 57% Black in population. The mayor is a Black woman, and the women who’ve brought this issue to national attention are all also Black. Can we not have a white woman starring in a Black women’s story?

    • marshlc

Yeah, that was my first thought when I saw this.

But on the other hand, if people will watch this because it’s Cher, and start to care (because, unbelievably, apparently not many people care now) because it’s Cher, that’s worth something.

      • there are plenty of white people in the area. they aren’t all racists. together, many of them are poor. flint has politicians of color, but long standing groups of a bunch of different types, when it was a more economically successful place.

cher does the Common Woman well in film, when she’s minded to. people from flint will be happy to have a movie about them with Cher in it, for all there will be some bitchy comments about that.

  • Ninja0980

Even more then North Carolina, what the GOP has done to Michigan is a disgrace and shows how unfit they are to run anything.
Snyder and the rest of the GOP should be in prison, simple as that.

  • LesbianTippingHabits

    Cher, You Go, Girl!

  • Jon Doh

Cher’s future famous line will be when she slaps Snyder across the face and tells him to get the lead out!

  • JellyDonut

cause she looks like your typical flint housewife

  • Lars Littlefield

This is good news. It’s about time she got off her ass and did something. /s

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Bruce Beresford directing. Katie Couric co-producing. Cher starring and co-producing.

A nice list of ingredients. I hope the soufflé raises to the occasion.

Isn’t she like 90 years old ? Flint is a wreck, just tear down the houses and start over.

    • David From Canada

Cher is 70 years old (will be 71 this May). All that cosmetic surgery has kept her looking at least 20 years younger. She has been described as a plastic surgeon’s dream.

      • Piona O.

        Or Dr. Herbert West’s dream.

  • Piona O.

Exactly what Flint needs. A washed up ex-glamor diva trying to regain some credibility for herself. Flint is what, 80% black? Who the F is Cher gonna play? Is she gonna wear blackface?
