BREAKING: Mass Shooting At Fort Lauderale Airport

According to breaking reports, nine people were injured and at least one is dead in an apparent mass shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport this afternoon. The shooter is reportedly in custody. Thousands of passengers have been evacuated out onto the tarmac. Former White House press secretary and CNN commentator Ari Fleischer happened to be there and he’s live-tweeting from the scene. I’ll update this post as more is known.

UPDATE: ABC News reports that the incident happened in the baggage claim area at Terminal 2, which is primarily used by Air Canada and Delta.

UPDATE II: The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is now reporting three fatalities. No motive is yet known.

    And the beat goes on.

    • Rebecca Gardner

My favorite band, VNV Nation, said it best.

Heaven help us, we’ve lost control
This should be our finest hour
But were racing towards the end of days
Pulling back from the brink, despite our best efforts
The volume increases and the beat goes on
All the players marching to a different drum
The rhythm of the war dance
      The beat goes on…

What will become of us if there’s no one to watch over us
If we should face the certainty of our destruction
Forfeiting everything, pointless cries, futile dreams
There’ll be no laughter, there’ll be no tears
      When tomorrow never comes.

This isn’t a game, turn the safety off
      Still we want more
And so the beat gets faster
      Everyone must play
      ‘Cause fame will find you
Put your face on the cover of a loaded magazine
      We’re proud of ourselves
Our greatest inventions, methods of killing
      Are reaching perfection
All the players marching to a different drum
The rhythm of the war dance and the beat goes on

What will become of us if there’s no one to watch over us
If we should face the certainty of our destruction
Forfeiting everything, pointless cries, futile dreams
There’ll be no laughter, there’ll be no tears
      When tomorrow never comes

As the warning sirens sound that the world is at an end
Rendered unto night, creations torn asunder
What will become of us, is there no one to watch over us?

There’ll be no laughter, there’ll be no tears
      When tomorrow never comes

Burying the lede, I know, but when did that happen?

  • Treant

OT: After seeing the gastroenterologist, I’m scheduled for an EGD and colonoscopy in a couple weeks.

Oooh, fun. I have to go pick up the patented Colon Blow kit from the pharmacy at some point.

    • grada3784

      That and lots of broth.

      • Treant

Shit, yeah, that’s all I’m allowed to “eat” the day before.

By 12 PM the following day, I’ll probably be feral and attacking the nurses to eat for sustenance.

        • JW Swift

I thought so, too, and did feel a bit hungry at times, but was far more distracted by all the sitting on the toilet, hours and hours after anything remotely solid had stopped coming out of my ass. And my hole was so sore from wiping that I couldn’t stand it.

          • Treant

Thanks–actually, that’s not at all sarcastic. I’m going to lay in wet wipes and diaper wipes for that evening as well to avoid the soreness.

And make sure I have a book and sit in the best lit bathroom.

          • JW Swift

I think the soreness is also from the acidity of the liquid coming out (for hours and hours) after the solids have been evacuated. In any case, since they used a good general anesthesia (Propofol, I believe) the procedure itself was a breeze compared to the prep for the two days before. Not that the prep actually caused me serious discomfort or pain, in and of itself, it was just the hours and hours where you couldn’t really get out of the bathroom or even off the toilet, and the intense uncomfortable feeling from the butthole itself being so sore. (Sorry for the T.M.I. for the rest of you…)

          • Treant

I hope the procedure is a breeze. I woke up during my last EGD as they were taking the biopsies. The doctor was…well, not that competent and I never got anywhere near him again.

          • PeterC

Lesson: Never wipe, just a dab will do it.

          • Rolf

When a friend of mine was growing up in the tropics, in his hygiene class the teacher gave everyone a piece of of bacalau (salted cod) to eat. When they were done she asked if they would be happy just wiping their face and hands with a paper napkin. It was a unanimous no, everyone wanted soap and water.
Then she held up a roll of toilet paper and said, “the same goes for the other end – not this (paper) – soap and water”.

It’s a lesson everyone, especially the hairy among us, should learn and abide by. It’s healthier, gentler and much more effective than just smearing shit around with paper.

Oh, and a shower hose makes life much easier on several fronts. Er, backs.

In addition to all the usual stuff like clear broth and jello I was also allowed to eat hard candy before my procedure.

          • JW Swift

I did have a bit of clear broth, but mostly was getting by on the nutrition drinks like Ensure or Boost (I think those were OK as long as they didn’t contain any milk or milk products, or something).

        • grada3784

If you’re big, like me, figure on 2 days. First time I went for the scoping, the regular cleanse wasn’t enough.

          • Treant

I’m wee. At 170 pounds, I’m slightly overweight and currently on a diet anyway.

      • Lumpy Gaga

I know it was stupid, but at the end of a chain of visits for other issues in 2015, they wanted to sign me up for one. I was very weary and just wasn’t having it.

        • JW Swift

I didn’t really mind the procedure itself (they had me knocked-out with Propofol or something) compared to the prep in advance for the procedure. If I didn’t have to do the prep in advance somehow, I’d do the dang procedure whenever the doctor told me to.

Yep. While I’m not looking forward to what they call an “in and out,” at least it should mean I won’t have to think about it for ten more years.

And it’s to check for gastroenteritis and gastritis, and rule out anything nastier. Since my problems are slowly subsiding, I’m 100% sure it’s gastritis.

      • edrex

and avoid quinoa the day before… even if you fast well. just take my word for this, ok?

        • TuuxKabin

I take your word a lot. That daily hit of 86% cacao is a good set up, first thing in the morning with glass of fresh squeezed blood orange juice and black coffee. Heaven. Maybe we’ll have us some quinoa tonight with dinner. No colonoscopies scheduled for a few years . . . I hope.

    • kanehau

I just got the notice in the mail that my 5-year ‘inspection’ is due this month.

      Happy Happy Joy Joy.

I think I’ll wait until my doctor says I need to go.

      • Treant

I thought it was 10 unless your doctor found a problem the first time around? I’d definitely check, but don’t put it off if you really need it every 5 years! I’m actually going 2 years early at 48.

    • Do Something Nice

The prep is worse than the procedure. A few years back I had one and when the physician came to see me afterwards to tell me that everything was OK, I told him that I needed a cigarette and asked if it was good for him too.

      • Scott Carpenter

The first time my doctor told me I needed a colonoscopy I found out he had NO sense of humor when I told him I expected dinner and flowers first.

    • BobSF_94117

When I had my first one, by the time I got to the pharmacy, it was late. Because I was a couple hours behind schedule for beginning the prep, I asked if I should just chug the first dose while I was there and then head home. The pharmacist said sure. THANK GOD, I did not follow her advice. Instead I walked home, then took it. Not five minutes later… KABLOOEY

      • Treant

That fast? I’m scheduled for my dose at 8 PM that evening, so I’m guessing I’ll be on Mr. Toilet around 8:05 then!

      • Kate

The media hasn’t released his race yet, so he’s probably not.

        • barrixines

Kate you’re back again! Obviously that small ad you placed looking for friends didn’t work out for you. We did try to tell you that placing it on lamp posts probably wouldn’t pay dividends.

It’s KAY, by the way; ‘she’ thought the change from ‘Kay’ to ‘Kate’ was so clever no one could perceive it. Blocked long ago–a troll so toxic and emotionally deformed that it considers the universal hatred it engenders to be some sort of warmth.

          • The_Wretched

Ah, I see the issue. You really get off on smacking people around. It’s a very understandable emotion with regard to Kate.

          • jsmukg

Ah, I see the issue. You really get off on pitiably juvenile attempts at putdowns. It’s very understandable, given the level of the rest of your posts.

          • The_Wretched

” given the level of the rest of your posts.”
Politics of personal destruction much? You’re personally motivated to keep to a crappy solution set. There are better ways to do things. Grow a little.

        • T-Batwoman

This is not a criticism as calling someone a troll because they don’t agree with you is pretty nonsensical. People typically hang with like minded individuals. Being a Trump supporter you will not change any minds here, why waste the effort? Breitbart would be more accepting of your ideals. I don’t understand your motivation.

          • Kate

“Being a Trump supporter you will not change any minds here, why waste the effort?”

Who says it’s wasting effort? I come here to interact with people who disagree with me. I’ve learned a number of things over the years.

Besides, it’s not like the right wingers particularly like me either. I’m in favour of single-payer approaches to healthcare, a strong social safety net, and unions. I believe in the right to self-defence, and see abortion as evil.

I don’t really belong anywhere, but I’ve been here for a long time. I switched when Pam’s House Blend stopped being regularly maintained, and when we were fighting for marriage equality, and wanted to keep up with the news.

            I never left.

          • T-Batwoman

I think it’s wasted time but that is just my opinion which really doesn’t count for much. I’ve swam against the liberal tide on a few issues myself which is not necessarily a popular course around here where socialism is apparently the new oxygen.

I appreciate your moxie. I just hope to see a moderate candidate for president in my lifetime.

30,000 is ridiculous. Then again, one is too many, but the NRA has to stay in business somehow, right? /s

Yet we’re supposed to be more worried about terrorists emigrating here from Syria.

The police didn’t stage an execution?

Three people who were probably on their way home, or looking forward to a warm vacation. Or perhaps loved ones or colleagues, greeting the passengers, wanting to know ‘how was your flight?’. Perhaps it was something stupid like “you grabbed my bag, it looks just like yours – I’m going to shoot you for that”. But whatever the reason three people are now dead who shouldn’t be dead, many more are injured who shouldn’t be injured, and even more are scarred from witnessing this horror. How do we stop it?

  • Robert Adams

Soon we will hear solemn reassuring words from President Obama.

The next time something like this happens we will be treated to a Twitter barrage, blaming some “Liberal” group or another.

Trump needs to build an great wall around himself and his cabinet…a great wall with an airtight lid. It wouldn’t change his/their grasp of reality. Eventually the air would be too foul to breathe and that, as they say, would be that.

      • Ore Carmi

Except that according to CNN, the guy’s Puerto Rican.

        • gaymex1

That will be of no concern to the haters. He’s just a Mexican living in another place. Their stereotyping will be in overdrive since they’re not too keen on Puerto Ricans either. He will be one of THEM.

      • Joe in PA

At this instant…I’d say coincidence. But time will tell.

  • Rex

And, unfortunately, some people will hear this, not bat an eye, and go about their lives. We’ve become immune to gun deaths and mass tragedy. Some will mutter a “thoughts and prayers” and do nothing to oppose those who think gun control is unnecessary. Now we have a leader who shows no compassion for anyone and will never do anything to change the direction this country is headed, and will most likely make things worse. I weep for those who lost their lives, I weep more for our country because there’s more of this to come.

  • Trigger warning: if you know anyone who was there at the airport during this event, don’t read my cynical, angry tirade below.

So here we go again. We’ll do another round where our leaders and media pretend they give a fuck about gun violence and then it will be back to business as usual until the next one. And the one after that. At this point we just have to admit that we as a society (not everyone, but the majority of people who vote) don’t give a damn about the people who keep getting shot by people who shouldn’t have been able to buy a gun in the first place. We don’t care and it’s hypocritical to do the mourning porn display that’s coming on cable news as if we did.

    • Treant

Hear, hear. I will skip the public mourning simply because it never amounts to anything. Thoughts and prayers, indeed.

      • William

I’ve flown on Air Canada. The hot, friendly future fashion model stewards made the United flight attendants from a previous flight that day look like a bunch of crabby post-menopausal shrews.
Oh wait, the United flight attendants were a bunch of crabby post-menopausal shrews.

      Those Canadian boys were sexy.

      • MBear

The flight attendants are awesome – some of the best. It’s everyone else, their website, their business practices, their fees, etc, etc, etc. 😉

        • William

The seat fee isn’t optional. They will not let you stand or sit on the floor during flight. The really annoying thing about Air Canada is connecting passengers from other airlines are always in ‘Boarding Group Z’.

          • MBear

The really annoying thing about Air Canada is…almost everything.

Very sad. And no, more guns is not the answer.

  • TK

I apologize for my earlier rant. I do realize we have to laugh sometimes when things just want to make us cry. This insane violence is happening far too often. And some think even more guns will make us all safer. Florida is almost as gun crazed as Texas and I don’t feel any safer for it.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

More Americans were shot by toddlers last year than by terrorist.

      • William

We need to build a low wall around toddlers to keep America safe.

Our office is almost literally a stone’s throw away from the airport (we’re just to the north, on the other side of the I-595 overpass) and there continues to be cop cars with blazing sirens speeding past (in both directions, towards AND away from the airport, surprisingly) and the sound of helicopters overhead. It’s a little unnerving.

Warning people – letting the people know safe places to go, not turning tail and bouncing their butts to the nearest exit

        Security Theatre indeed!

        • TrollopeReader

You have common sense. i have common sense. Security Theatre actors … only a select few …. (*sigh*)

    • Randy Ellicott

Remember these agents get paid extremely poorly, and while it would be nice to say they should react like cops or other government agents, they are just glorified doormen. If you are getting paid around $30,000 a year (if your full time) to deal with american travelers who dont understand that you have to not bring full vodka bottles, guns, or knives through security and get screamed at by ignorant a-holes, I think expecting them to stand and put themselves in the line of fire with their batons and stun guns is a bit much. Yes they should be an actual security force, yes they should be able to stand and fight, but our government has not provided them with the training or incentives to do so.

      • TrollopeReader

i imagine $30k a year is way more than the average “agent” … probably more like $20k.

        • Randy Ellicott

From my google machine this is what i got:

As of January 2013, D-banded TSOs receive annual salaries of between $25,518 and $38,277, while E-banded officers are paid between $29,302 and $44,007. These salary bands do not include the additional locality pay that TSA employees working in high-cost areas are eligible to receive.

I am assuming that includes overtime for full time people, though i think a majority of their force is part-time.

          • TrollopeReader

            thanks… they used to be in the $8.00 – $11.00 / hour range … (i think).

    • The_Wretched

I fully agree that it’s security theater. They aren’t paid enough though. They are paid and trained as actors not civil servants.

      • MBear

Unfortunately they are only acting on bullying passengers in their attempt to cope with whatever psychological problems they seem to have…at least in my experience.

How much they are paid is not my issue.
Whatever they’re paid, IMO it’s too much.
