Somebody Hacked The Hollywood Sign

From the Hollywood Reporter:

The Hollywood sign was vandalized to read “Hollyweed” early Sunday morning. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said in an apparent New Year’s prank, someone was able to climb onto the mountaintop and place tarps over the sign for it to read “Hollyweed.” The incident was caught on surveillance cameras and LAPD is investigatgating the act as a misdemeanor trespassing crime. The incident comes after California voters approved recreational marijuana. California businesses, however, aren’t licesensed to sell recreational marijuana until Jan. 1, 2018.

Not the first time. First time for “Hollyweed” was in 1976.

  • On January 1st, 1976, Hollywood residents woke up to read their famous hilltop sign a little differently. Local prankster Danny Finegood had indulged in some large-scale wordplay and changed the sign to say “Hollyweed“. It was to be the first of many pranks on the Hollywood sign by Danny and coincided with the day less restrictive California marijuana laws took effect. Performed as what he claimed was part of a college art project on New Year’s Day, Danny used stones and rope to hoist up pieces fabric and change the appearance of the giant letters.

Yeah, someone needs to up the anty.

    • tcinsf

Yeah, I was going to say that altering the Hollywood sign is nothing new, and so long as it’s not damaged nobody cares. It’s a good clean prank.

    • David L. Caster

What a brilliant hack. I think this is great.

  • bkmn

Disqus seems to be disgusted with 2017. That sign has been changed multiple times.

  • Stephen Elliot Phillips

All the stoners are still in bed here. I wonder if theyve fixed the sign already.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

    Stoner humor.

  • David Walker

I know this is BillBear’s territory, but I post this music because it is so joyous (for the New Year) and never ceases to make me high (for the picture and all that it entails). Happy, mates!

    • David Walker

So, the power of the sign apparently has taken over. That one is for stoned polka-ists. THIS is the one re: sign and BillBear.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

      Interesting choice there, Mr. Walker.

      • David Walker

Please to refresh it. I think the only way I could/would polka would be while stoned, but the reply is the intended.

Dancers are fine but, I draw the line at frogs in space suits and Abe Lincoln dancing with sharks.

          Party pooper.

😳There’s a pole dancing chicken carcass.

If we’re posting New Year’s songs this is a favorite of mine (yes, it’sGlee). It’s joyous and I can’t help but smile.

The original is by A Great Big World and the video below is them and their friends watching their song being performed on Glee.

And here’s the original AGBW version.

At least they didn’t actually vandalize the sign, they only used tarps to cover and alter the O’s; so no real damage. I wouldn’t say it’s criminal, at best mischief. Then again, and I say this with a degree of discomfort, it is America and your police tend to be, how shall I put this, a tad heavy handed.

    • canoebum

Much of the outcome will hinge on the skin tone of the pranksters.

Stoners very seldom do any damage. Now methheads……

      • DumbHairyApe

They would have dismantled it and sold all the material for scrap…

WOOF! WOOF! I am TuuXKabin and I approve this hack!

    • Friday

I think I’d make the O’s into googley eyes. 🙂

      • DumbHairyApe

HA! I actually did that one too, but didn’t post it. 😉

  • nocadrummer

I used to live in L.A., and could see the sign from my duplex.
I had to chuckle at seeing this, although (morally and probably legally) I know it’s wrong. Since there’s no permanent damage to the sign, I hope the sentencing is just undoing the change, and maybe a few weeks of community service. After all, it probably brought more [local] tourists in than the plain ol’ “Hollywood” sign would.

  • tcinsf

“hack?” People have been “altering” the Hollywood sign since before anybody knew what a computer was.

    • DumbHairyApe

Heck, the first “hack” was when they ditched the “LAND” at the end.

      • Friday

I think that was actually cause the sign fell into disrepair and by the time they got to putting it back together it was just ‘Hollywood’ to everyone anyway. 🙂

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

Considering people continually get away with actually destroying atheist signs repeatedly at Christmas, whoever did this should only get a fine at most.

  • JWC

it was just tarp over the 2 “O” to make them “E” remove the damn tarp and settle down we all had a good (puff) laff

  • JellyDonut

Investigating?? Don’t they have better things to do? It was a prank – laugh it off and move on.

    • William

Police feel the need to arrest people, fine them and give them jail time. It’s all about money.

  • Wilberforce

They turn out fabulous product. And when they’re on their game, no one else can compete. But Hollywood is one of the most corrupt cities in the country. And this prank is just that, a meaningless game that doesn’t address the real issue.

    • David L. Caster

Child, please, what are you going on about?

  • KnownDonorDad

So from now on, everyone is going to call it Hollyweed, right? (Please tell me there are some Bojack Horseman fans here).

I read a few years ago, when they restored the Hollywood sign, Alice Cooper paid to do one of the Os. I doubt he’d mind these little shenanigans.

  • 10_39

Harmless and funny. Whoever did it should get a medal for brightening our damn day.

Nothing’s up at the Hollyweed dot com website yet, but I hope somebody made a good short film about the prank.

  • Anthony

“Vandalized” is strong.. they put tarps over the sign.. At most that’s trespass and littering!

  • Bob Conti

I remember this happening every now back in the late 70’s, early 80’s before they rebuilt the sign and beefed up the security.
