Russia Dispatches Jet To Pick Up Expelled Diplomats

Apparently they are disregarding Wikileaks’ advice to hole-up in their compound until Trump is sworn in. The Daily Mail reports:

The Russian government will send a plane to ferry its diplomats out of the U.S., after President Obama expelled them in a new round of sanctions against the country for its alleged meddling in the presidential election. On Thursday, the president labeled 35 Russian diplomats from the country’s embassy in Washington, DC and consulate in San Francisco ‘persona non grata’ – giving them 72 hours to get out of the country. Previous reports stated that some of the diplomats were having a hard time booking travel out of the U.S. at the last minute and during the holiday season.

Russian officials are addressing the issue by sending a plane to the U.S. to pick up these expelled diplomats and their families, ensuring they are out of the country by Obama’s New Year’s Day deadline, the Kremlin announced Friday. ‘For diplomats and their families to leave the United States, an aircraft of the Rossiya Special Flight Squadron of the Russian Presidential Property Management Directorate will be sent to the US,’ the press release read.

In their announcement on Twitter, the Kremlin included a picture of the Rossiya Special Flight Squadron aircraft that will be sent to the U.S. Rossiya Airlines is a subsidiary of Aeroflot – a 51 per cent state-owned air transportation company. As he ordered the airlift, Putin also mocked Obama by declining to carry out tit-for-tat expulsions of U.S. diplomats and instead inviting their children to a holiday party at the Kremlin – as well as saying he would wait for Donald Trump to become president before deciding what to do next.

The UK Russian Embassy staff were getting pretty uppity over Obama’s actions, maybe the UK should consider following suit.

        Why ruin the mountain?

      • Lars Littlefield

Too soon for me. In 1998 my partner and I were bumped from a Cuban Air flight from Quito, Ecuador. The plane was an ancient Tu-154. It crashed just after take off in a poor neighborhood of the city killing all on board and bunch of people on the ground. It still gives me pause– and the shivers.

      • TheManicMechanic

Stuck in the side of Trump Tower would be more fitting.

    • William

A 727? Nobody flies in those anymore!

      • Oikos

Sad, Low energy type of aircraft.

        • Kruhn

You are actually correct. Between the need for three engines, when modern planes can travel the Pacific with 2. Plus, the 727 was a noisy SOB!

          • Andymac3

Well, that explains it, the plane is noisy enough to drown out Trumps manic screams when he wakes up in a sweat in the middle of the night shouting ‘Daddy, I just want to make you proud, why did you send me away?’

The Tweets say that the plane they’re sending is the Tupelov Tu-154 which happens to be the same type as crashed into the Black Sea last week killing all 92 aboard…

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

      Convenient, yes?

    • David L. Caster

Let’s hope they checked this one out and its maintenance is up to date. Wouldn’t want the US to be blamed if the damn thing goes down.

    • William

The range of a Tu-154 is a little short for a DC-Moscow flight. The Ilyushin Il-96 is a long range jetliner.

      • OdieDenCO

        I’m not seeing an issue

        • Kruhn

No Lars, it is a Il-96, it says it by the cockpit.

Send them over in the new Sukhoi Superjet. Google it boys and girls to get the joke!

        • William

          uhhh, it’s a regional jet?

          • Kruhn

Did you read its history? 😛

          • William

The Boeing 787 didn’t have such a stellar start either.

          • Kruhn

Not even the A-320, which had the worst launch history prior to the Superjet, compares. Even Aeroflot is refusing to buy the plane. The 787’s problems were tiny in comparison.

          • William

          • Kruhn

            The A-320.

    • Lars Littlefield

A Tu-154 is a tri-jet configuration similar to old Boeing 727s (my favorite plane). The Ilyushin Il-96 is a wide body long range thing which is not the same as in the photo. I am very curious as to what model of jet is in the photo. Very interesting underbody.

That is an Il-96 in the photo above and you can find it in the link as well. #2 and the very last picture in that post are the same as the photo posted here.

        • Lars Littlefield

I guess you’re right. WhenI looked up Rossiya Special Flight Squadron’s livery it didn’t list and IL-96. But it looks as though they’ve gone back in production in the last year.

          • glass

I know quite a bit about Aeroflot and Russian airlines but I had never heard of the Rossiya Special Flight Squadron. Everyday we learn new things about the world. 🙂

        • Ceann Eltigh

I was in 3rd grade. The PTA hatched a plan where the Mother’s of the students would drive to the school, load as many kids in the car that they could and head South. The teachers would have us lined up and waiting. We practiced this a few times, going 4-5 blocks and then back to the school.
Looking back later there were some minor flaws in this plan. What Mother would take other kids and leave her kids behind. What were we going to do, eat, drink, once in the countryside. One can imagine the carnage of freaked-out Mothers hauling ass down the highway with a carload of screaming kids.

    • Rex

The cold war is going to be between Trump supporters and the rest of us.

    • Lars Littlefield

Funny thing, I was musing this morning how the Cold War wasn’t so bad. Sure, we lived under constant threat of being blown up in a nuclear holocaust, but we got use to it. The cultural evolution from the 50s to the 90s were entertaining. And US technology boomed. With Trump in the White House it’s only a matter of time that nuclear war becomes a major threat once again. So I’ll get out my old Beach Boy albums and wax my surfboard and . . .
