Mormon Choir Singer Resigns Rather Than Perform For Donald Trump: “I Could Never Throw Roses To Hitler”

The Salt Lake Tribune reports:

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s acceptance of the invitation to sing at Donald Trump’s inauguration has spawned widespread debate among the faithful and thousands of signatures on a petition demanding the decision’s reversal. Now the choir’s participation has even more fallout: the resignation of a female singer.

“Since ‘the announcement,’ I have spent several sleepless nights and days in turmoil and agony. I have reflected carefully on both sides of the issue, prayed a lot, talked with family and friends, and searched my soul,” Jan Chamberlin wrote in a resignation letter to the choir president and choir members. “I’ve tried to tell myself that by not going to the inauguration, that I would be able to stay in choir for all the other good reasons. I’ve tried to tell myself that it will be all right and that I can continue in good conscience before God and man.”

But she could not do it, Chamberlin said in the letter, she later posted on Facebook. “I could never look myself in the mirror again with self-respect.” The choir’s participation in the inauguration would “severely damage” its “image and networking,” she said, adding that many “good people throughout this land and throughout the world already do and will continue to feel betrayed. … I know that I too feel betrayed.” For the singer, it is a moral issue, she wrote. “I only know I could never ‘throw roses to Hitler.’ And I certainly could never sing for him.”

Chamberlin’s full letter is viewable on her Facebook page. The choir has 360 members and about 200 are expected to volunteer to perform for Trump.

The more that quit, the angrier Cheetolini will get. How long before he attacks her on twitter? 3….2…….1

    • CanuckDon

He’ll have to form a team to do a talent search….like Rose and Blanche did to save the lighthouse.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

” She wouldn’t make the cut anyway. We only have 10’s perform!
      Well, maybe a few 9’s, but the best 9’s !! “

    • Buford

‘Cheetolini’… I like, but ‘Twitler’ is also good.

      • Oikos

        That’s a good one!

      • sisterfalconer

        don’t forget “Agent Orange” 🙂

        • William

My cousin had a Barbie doll with that name. It wore a trench coat.

      • John

How about ‘mango maniac’? (or moron)

  • Michael R

Inauguration of Trump = Throw roses to Hitler 2017

    • Uncle Mark

Isn’t that why the alt_right/nazis are creaming their panties over Trump? (As well as getting into little bitch-fights over their little paramilitary pajama party/sleep-over in Jan)

      • Michael R

… and they still have to deal with Jew loving side of Trump that they hate ,
because Trump doesn’t care about anyone but himself just like they do .

    • LaChatSayWha

I thought that was very well-phrased. And I respect her refusal. It can’t be easy to expose oneself to the hatred and harassment of the trumpanzees.

  • Rex

Keep your self respect, and you have mine as well.

    • Gigi

She’s a Mormon so there’s not a lot of self-respect there, but I applaud her courage to take a stand. Imagine the Trumpertantrum if they all beck out. Delicious!

      • Rex

They won’t back out. There’s plenty of Trump supporters in the Mormon camp. I just respect her decision not to perform for Twitler.

        • Rolf

        • clay

Trump got 45.1% of Utah votes. Wouldn’t it be cool if he got only 162 of the 360 choir members? Or would that only feed into the alt-media’s inability to count?

      • olandp

I’m sure it is a typo, but “beck out” is great. Kind of like how Glenn Beck is singing a different tune now.

        • Gigi

          It was. Edited.

          • olandp

I was hoping you would keep it.

          • Gigi

            I hate typos!

          • Baltimatt

Then there’s the “Your invited” on the invitation.

          • IamM

            Might be deliberate.

  • Pollos Hermanos
    • Oikos

    • Ernest Endevor

      I love the ‘Your’.

      • Butch

I wuz going to mention that but sometimes I get accused (probably correctly) of being the grammar police, so I was skeered to.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        Should be Yer.

        • TJay229

        • cleos_mom

But “Inaugguration” would be a more realistic spelling.

          • bzrd

            “your enwhited to the inaugguration”

          • JCF

    • Todd20036

Honestly, I don’t think Hung would want to perform there, but I see the joke.

      • Kruhn

How about the “It’s Friday” girl?

    • BillPost

Does that say schedule permitting Marie Osmond on the bottom?

      • NIFP

*Schedule permitting: possibly Marie Osmond. I love the possibly!

      • Acronym Jim

I don’t think Marie needs anybody’s permission if she wants to bottom.

        • Menergy

          boom tish!

    • Gayer Than Thou

“Performances by … Karaoke!” made coffee come out of my nose.

    • ColoMtnWoman

I’d like to think that “YOUR” was misspelled on purpose… (YOU’RE), since the Doofus can’t spell “unpresidented”… But I DO like Karaoke.

      • (((GC)))

“Unpresidented” is such an apt eggcorn for the unprecedented things tRump has said and done!

    • ericxdc

Im bigly excited. Its gonna be unpresidented!!!!

    • EqualityForAll

That poster had me convinced that it was real, right up until I took a better look at the bikini chick. Her tits are way too small; therefore, Trumpf would never have approved of the model or the poster.

  • Gigi

O/T: I just learned that Ricky Martin performed at GWB’s first inauguration. WTF?!?!

    • olandp

That was back when he was “straight” also the last time that I listened to any of his music.

    • Chucktech

George W. Bush, it’s shocks me to say, is no Donald Trump.

      • Gigi

True, but he did court the religious right.

        • Chucktech

And promptly told them to fuck off after the election (in 2004, at least).

          • William

W ran his 2004 campaign on banning gay marriage.

          • cleos_mom

No risk in doing that. In every election cycle, the Religious Right falls on its butt and reassures itself that Lucy will leave that football where it is the next time.

  • mikeinrkfd

Now just get the rest to resign.

  • Mark

Surely a couple garage bands out of Tennessee or Alabama could fill in…..

    • CanuckDon

      Bring out the court jesters.

  • Cousin Bleh

It’s always interesting to see what people’s breaking points are. Her church has a long, well-documented history of abuse of women, discrimination against POC, excommunication of LGBT family members… she was ok with all of that, but this is when she finally draws the line.

I mean, kudos to her, but really, WTF took you so long?

    • Buford

      Perfectly said.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        Yeah, he said that goodly

        • Buford

Agree. Good is how it was said.

        • cleos_mom

          Certes he did.

    • pluky

The first step is the biggest. The LDS church (like most others) provides a lot of support and sense of identity. Not everyone has it in them to “walk away from Omelas.”

      • Craig Howell

        Who/what/where is Omelas?

        • Cousin Bleh

          It’s in Oregon.

          • pluky

yes. she got the name of town by reversing Salem, O.

        • pluky

Amazing short story by UK Leguin. Won’t spoil it for you, but read it if you can find.

        • Duh-David

I never liked it, but it is a recognized classic.

          • Craig Howell

Thanks for sharing that rich, disturbing story.

      • Cousin Bleh

I get what you’re saying. And yet, I still can’t help but believe that even the lowliest thinking person still has the capacity to recognize that enslaving women eclipses the Friday night church social.

Also, for the record, she’s not actually leaving the church. Just the choir.

        • pluky

i’m afraid she’s about to find out how little tolerance for even the smallest dissent there is in a institution as hierarchical and authoritarian as the LDS.

    • Rambie

I still applaud her for finally reaching her breaking point. Not to defend her, but her church has a well documented history of using coercion, peer pressure, threats, and other tactics to keep their “members” in line.

      • OdieDenCO

true, getting out of a cult is much like having a baby. It’s a lot of fun getting in but hell getting out.

      • Gustav2

And don’t forget the high use of prescription drugs in the Mormon female population.

        • Rambie

          Not just with the females.

      • The Return of Traxley

This. I’m always hopeful whenever even just one individual finally gathers their courage and seeks to change themself for the better. I’ll welcome that. I think that wanting to redeem oneself, sincerely seeking forgiveness, and genuinely trying to make amends for past wrongs is always a good thing.

    • Gayer Than Thou

True, but I’ll take it because this is the kind of public embarrassment that the church hates. And richly deserves.

    • Cerberus

That’s a thing about bigots, what finally breaks through all the propaganda and lies and gets them to look at things honestly can often be relatively small, but it’s just one more piece at the doubt until it gets too much.

In many ways it’s like pain and suicidal ideation. The thing that can finally make someone feel hopeless and in the grips of suicidal ideation can be relatively small, but it’s just the last piece of pain that was too much for the coping strategies they had.

I suspect we’re going to see bigots leaking back out of nazism as little things break through the hellish route they are on. And hopefully we can get them to break all the way from it instead of deciding their bigotry would be just fine except for the one or two things that were a line too far.

    • perversatile

In situations both good and bad, it comes down to,
“you can see my face while I’m doing this thing”.

  • AtticusP

It would be so nice if they trotted out the choir and, when the music started, every single one of them refused to sing.

And then, if the Rockettes would just stand there and do nothing, imagine the reaction from Trump and his cult followers.

    Yeah, I know. But I can dream, can’t I?

    • Chucktech

What a beautiful dream, filled with karma and just deserts!

      • Rambie

Plus, karma and just deserts is calorie free too!

    • Uncle Mark

Or they could sing & dance to “Springtime for Hitler”

    • LaChatSayWha

Or the Rockettes could turn their backs to the audience, flip up their skirts, and display their panties reading alternately “pussy grabs back” and “not my president.” Or maybe “not my percent”.

      • Scott

Would it be too aggressive if they were to perform but refuse to wear their feminine hygiene products?

    • perversatile
      • AtticusP

I never knew that Rudy Giuliani was a twin!

  • Butch

I wonder how many christians who like to shriek about sincerely held convictions will come to her defense.

    • yea….wait for that…

      • Butch

I think you better find something to occupy yourself while you wait. It’ll prob’ly be a while.

    • Mark Neé Fuzz

She will be condemned as an apostate.

    • Buford

My money is on the loving, forgiving, non-judgmental nature of Christians (by definition) to instead result in calls for her to burn in Hell.

  • Snarkaholic

Re: The willingness of the M.T. choir to perform in the first place: Do you guys think it’s more about seeking personal gain or more about trying to avoid being demonized/persecuted/executed as “The Other” by Trump’s hateful cabinet members?

    • clay

      “Any press is good press.”
      Their demographic isn’t exactly growing.

  • Mark Neé Fuzz

Speaking of Mormons, I wonder why the Osmond Brothers aren’t on the program. Don’t they lean pretty far to the right?

    • Mark

Marie has a daughter who’s lesbian. She, at least, is more centrist, and open minded.

  • GayOldLady

“I only know I could never ‘throw roses to Hitler.’ And I certainly could never sing for him.”

This is exactly how I feel about the people who voted for tRump, I will throw them no roses. They voted for a Hitleresque character and I will give them no quarter, no excuse, no refuge. How they can go on about their lives even as they selected a man whose stated purpose is to destroy the lives of people he considers to be “the other” is beyond me.

The Bastard is going to Kill us All.

    • Judas Peckerwood

Yup. The mercifully few Trump voters who were in my life are there no longer. Good riddance to bad trash.

      • GayOldLady

    • John

“The Bastard is going to Kill us All” I truly hope it doesn’t come to that…but with that in mind, may I suggest Nevil Shute’s “On The Beach” — watch the prescient movie or read the book.
With the proposed increase in nuclear weapons…well…with a nod to Tom Lehrer, “Life is like a sewer, what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.” Then there’s this “uplifting” song: (I’m a big fan of Lehrer’s and have been for – gulp – decades!)

      • GayOldLady

I watched “On the Beach” when it was first released in the late 50’s. Recently I had the opportunity to watch it again on TCM. It had the same effect on me it did nearly 60 years ago.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

She’s gonna be stripped of her sacred underwear and become the sister wife that cleans out toilets and changes diapers.

  • Cackalaquiano

I’ve said it before: these Evangelicals who see themselves as society’s moral compass while jumping on the TRUMP Train no longer have a righteous leg to stand on.

    • clay

(and they’re not the congregations reporting doubling of attendance over the previous year since the middle of November)

      • Cackalaquiano

I hope you’re right about that.

    • Silver Badger

They never did. Evangelicals forget how Christ felt about stone casting and wouldn’t walk the second mile unless you paid them,

      • clay

Too many of them sold their souls in 1976– they don’t remember when they weren’t being steered as an arm of the GOP.

      • Cackalaquiano

Right. And my bigger point is they’ve given us perfect ammunition to throw back at them when they demean our godless “lifestyles.” Can I get an amen?

        • canoebum

Your comment presupposes they have intact thought processes that would be affected when informed of their hypocrisy. I rather doubt that. Evangelicals have a remarkable gift of hearing only what agrees with their own prejudices.

  • Treant

So 200 of 360 (55.6%) can be relied upon to gleefully throw roses at Hitler. Many more probably would but can’t go that day.

1 of 360 (<0.28%) resigned rather than do that.

It's not a good average and doesn't speak well for Mormons or for humans in general.

    • The Return of Traxley

But her letter might cause some of those on the edge choose to come over to her size. There’s that…

      • Treant

True, but I won’t hold my breath. You probably get an extra moon for your planet or something if you’re on the choir.

  • joe ho

And Trump got 60% of the Catholic vote.

More evidence against claims for religion’s supposed moral authority.

  • cleos_mom

Better run a shower if you intend to read the comments to that article.

  • Jack

That’s a big step for her.

  • Lee Grupsmith-Pedersen

Well, there goes her temple recommend.

The Secret Service would love that gig. They’d be fighting to get assigned. I wouldn’t put it past Der Herr to try and get in to see it on the down low.

      A lookalike? You sure?

    • Are we sure it’s just a lookalike?

      • cleos_mom

The tell would be if the performer doesn’t maintain a peevish-looking squint the entire time she’s on the stage.

  • Dot Beech

I commend her for her principled stand. Organized religion demands obeisance and gives cover and group approval when obeisance is given. When it is not given, things can quickly get ugly for the disobedient congregant. That’s why I don’t much like organized religion.

But sometimes it can encourage a person to think for herself and act in a principled way. Ms. Chamberlin’s principled decision will no doubt cause her to receive both applause and a lot of grief. It can’t have been an easy decision, but in so doing, she has earned the respect of decent people the world over. I am sure I would disagree with her on any number of things, but I respect her strength and conviction.
