Matt Baume: There Was SOME Good News This Year

This morning activist Matt Baume reminds us that there actually was some good news this year. From his clip description:

“Do we have to do a year in review for 2016? This was a rough one, but what if I told you there were some really great milestones for LGBTs this year? It’s true! Amidst all the bad news, 2016 had some real bright spots. And 2017 could have more — or it could be much, much worse.”

Love Matt – and he’s totally right.

While I’m happy with Matt’s glass-half-full look back at 2016, I can’t help but think that the progress he points to in 2016 is merely the inertia of the forward motion throughout the Obama administration. The momentum will now slow to a crawl, then a dead stop. The forces allied with the ignominy that is Trump and all his ghastly baggage will try to push back and reverse, as best they can, what we’ve achieved.

But sure, Matt, we’ll stay (I’ll stay) vocal and visible and vigilant in 2017.

Someone had a big bowl of Sugar Frosted Optimism Flakes for breakfast this morning…

He’ll soon go back to his Scorn Flakes.

I like Hailey Mill’s Pollyanna much better.

The LGBTQ communities are still fighting to advance our rights but on a much broader range of issues.

Marriage equality will be very difficult to take away although, like the struggle for abortion, rightists will try to limit it and create barriers against us.

The fight for transgendered equality is picking up steam in terms of public services and public opinion, especially among youth, but violence by cops and other bigots combined with severe hiring and wage discrimination remain major obstacles.

The fight to shut down cultist ‘reeducation’ snake pits and end the torture and sexual abuse that characterize them is making advances but the fight to emancipate LGBTQ children is just beginning to be discussed.

In general terms, LGBTQ workers are as under paid and over exploited as every sector of the working class and until unions are rebuilt and armed with a socialist perspective that will continue to be the case. That’s especially true for LGBTQ immigrant workers.

Well over 100,000 people signed the petition demanding the release of Chelsea Manning.

Internationally, we continue to see heroism and hard work paying off in terms of the creation of movements.

Meh, neoliberalism was neither inspiring not really all that benign.

Daily Xtra’s 2016 international LGBT good news:

First, the good news. Three tiny countries decriminalized homosexuality in 2016: Nauru, Seychelles, and Belize. The latter’s Supreme Court decision also required the country to enforce discrimination protections for gay people, and it may form a precedent to sweep anti-gay laws from the 10 Caribbean states that still maintain them on the books.

Colombia’s Supreme Court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage —
although not without consequences. Marriage laws also passed in several
minor territories like the Faroe Islands, Guernsey, Isle of Man, and Gibraltar, as well as in several Mexican states, and civil unions were approved in Italy and Aruba.

The year’s bad news can be found at the link.

Seychelles is also significant because it, like South Africa, is a member of the African Union. Despite a lot of oppression in Africa, there are nations making significant progress and that will have more influence on their neighbors than what happens for US citizens..

As usual, if you look at places where LGBT rights are faring poorly, it matches places with severe economic hardships. When you’re down and out, it’s much easier to demonize minority groups – look at the Jim Crow south.

Plus, Malta —MALTA!— banning ex-gay conversion.

Matt Baume is one of our successful people. He is good at what he does and we need more people with his talents. Having said this, quite frankly, he makes my teeth itch. I don’t dislike him but I do not enjoy watching or hearing him. For me, he comes across much better with written communication.

We each have our own tastes. With apologies to those now joining us from the West Coast, I can’t stand listening to people with a northern California accent, and some a youse from south Jersey are getting on my nerves, too.

      • Butch

Then our Yooper accent would drive you out of your mind. But actually…I know it’s shallow but I keep wishing Matt would get a little sun, spend some time in the outdoors…..

        • clay

Oh, noooooooo. You misunderstand me. A furry, burly Norwegian with a Western Lakes low-tongue modifier telling me to “git in thee booooat” might make me too weak in the knees to obey. I know the Bay Area has ties to the NE accents, but how it’s mixed with (my) drawl just sounds . . . lazy . . . rather than relaxed to my ear.

My “Matt Baume shirtless” image search turned up nothing.

See, Matt, nothing good this year.

The reason that Matt had to make this video is because of the Ongoing Gay Funeral that many of you are wallowing in. Listen to what he said. And then rip off that fucking widow’s veil and let’s get busy.

  • Belthazar

I’m in general agreement w/Matt but it is difficult when this shows up in your newsfeed:

However, acknowledging the facts that have occurred does not mean that people have given up the fight.

Alex&Maggie, on Supergirl. The only way I’m going to survive The-Day-Which-Shall-Not-Be-Named, is that Supergirl is back Jan.23.
