MAINE: Anti-Gay Right Wing Columnist Dies After Handgun Goes Off While Showing It To Teenage Boy

The Portland Press Herald reports:

Maine State Police and Sanford police are investigating the shooting death of Portland Press Herald columnist M.D. Harmon at his home Wednesday afternoon in Sanford. Police say Michael D. Harmon, 71, died at his home on Brunelle Avenue after a handgun he was showing to a teenage boy went off while the 16-year-old was handling it.

Harmon, a steadfast defender of gun rights and a champion of conservative viewpoints, was a longtime editor and columnist for the Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He worked for the newspaper for 41 years, and continued to write a weekly column after he retired in 2011.

The teenage boy and his father, both from North Berwick, were visiting Harmon’s home at the time of the shooting, police said. They have been cooperating with the investigation and detectives were expected to question them again today.

Harmon was known as a conservative thinker and a staunch defender of gun rights in his newspaper columns, including some that argued against the recent failed referendum to require background checks for private gun purchases. In a Sept. 13, 1993, editorial column, Harmon wrote about the importance of everyone’s constitutional right to own a firearm.

“I view threats to that freedom as seriously as I do threats to my right to vote, or speak freely, or worship as I please,” he wrote. In that same column, Harmon wrote that he had belonged to the National Rifle Association from the day of his first paycheck.

In addition to his advocacy for gun rights, Harmon was a very loud opponent of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. After the Obergefell ruling, he wrote this:

We need an amendment saying: “Every justice, beginning with the second national election after his or her appointment, will answer to the American people and the states in a retention election every eight years. Those justices deemed unfit for retention by both a majority of the American people as a whole and by majorities of the electorates in at least half of the 50 states will be removed from office and disqualified from future service on the Court.” If Congress won’t pass it, then a “Convention of States,” called under the Constitution’s Article V, should be convened to consider such a change. Are we there yet? Probably not, but we may be soon. I doubt that millions of Americans will let their religious liberties be trampled without pushing back. We’re made of sterner stuff than that.

Gun safety 101 – never let someone who does not know how to safely handle a gun handle a gun.

    • Also, wouldn’t any gun advocacy expert think to unload the gun first?

      • Todd20036

And put the safety on, yeah. But that’s liberal gun control talk.

        • Christopher

“End Liberal gun control! Remove all safeties!”

Oh, and let’s go ahead and remove all the warning labels as well. Let’s get evolution going again.

Patience, my boy, January 20th will be here soon…

          • Galvestonian

January 21st — WAR!!!! The Republicans reinstitute the ‘draft’ and all Republican kids rush to get into the ‘National Guard’ or some college. As I recall (I’m 74 and a Vietnam era vet) there were a few colleges with no campus and something like an enrollment of 300,000 students that never graduated. College students were exempt at the time.

          • Chucktech

Thanks for your service. My brother is a Viet Nam vet.

Have you seen Trump’s nominee for FDA?

          • Layla Menandez

The fact is in America you can be mentally ill and still legally buy and own a gun. That is the law. The only way you can’t is IF you’ve been committed to the nut house or been found mentally defective BY A JUDGE (if you go to the funny farm because you, your family, or a doctor puts you there… no problem… buy yourself as many weapons as you want when you get out).

Republicans would rather watch their children lie dead in the street than change their ambiguously worded 250 year old document. It’s time to stop this, and I’m looking your direction, Obama.

Yes, you have done a great job in office. RECORD unemployment numbers, legalized gay marriage, 5% growth, best year for jobs since 1999, consumer confidence up, deficit down 60% in 2014, gas prices low, health insurance cheaper than ever ($85/month), car insurance cheaper than ever ($25/month from Panda), the 1% starting to be taxed more…

I’m a gun owner. I don’t want the gov to take my guns because I was clinically depressed a decade ago but obviously we need to do something about the gun violence… the rub is to do it without stomping on the 2nd amendment.

      • ceeenbee

I believe this is just another tick mark on the stock of HRC’s gun. /s

      • Jeffrey

One question I have asked many times, as someone who grew up around firearms, is why wouldn’t the NRA be more interested in pushing gun safety education? It would improve their cause greatly. But it just shows that they really don’t care about safety or guns. They’re just a powerful lobby with a sizable force of voters are tooo dumb to care about gun safety. Thus one gets shot by one’s own gun by one’s own friend or toddler or sibling.

        • UrsusArctos

Once upon a time the NRA did push gun safety and hunting safety, sponsoring classes and working with state Departments of Wildlife.
There is more money to be made by the NRA patrons (gun manufacturers & sellers) in having the NRA stampeding gun huggers any time something sensible comes along (like safety measures). They went from being an advocacy group for gun owners and hunters to an industry lobbying group.

          • rusty57

            ^ This right here.

    • Todd20036

You aren’t talking about the boy right now, are you?

But his family is now a NRA gold star family.

        • Librarykid

Every cloud has a silver lining or gold, maybe, in this case.

    • jimbo65

And you’d think these ammosexuals would know to have the stupid safety on before handing it over to be “admired”. Beyond that, I guess darwin’s law has culled another one.

      • Chucktech

Darwin’s pretty fucking slow sometimes, this fucker had a 70+ year run.

        • Robincho

It’s all that hanging out with his tortoises…

      • Barry S G

The proper way is to remove the magazine and rack the slide to remove any cartridge from the chamber if it is a semi, or open the cylinder and dump it out to clear. And even then the person being handed the gun should do the same just to make double sure.

    • OdieDenCO

lesson 2: never point a gun at someone!

    • lattebud

And assume every gun is loaded

    • Barry S G

Actually the first rule of gun safety is Treat all guns as loaded even if you are handed one that is supposedly empty. Second, keep your finger off the trigger until the moment you are going to shoot, and third, never point a gun at anything unless you are prepared to destroy it.
I just bought my first pistol and every video as well as the class I took emphasizes these points. You would think that a avid gun rights promoter would know and understand these three rules.

    • FAEN

You’re talking about teabaggers. Gun safety 101 is socialism.

    • StSean

thoguh i am intrigued by the “undisclosed reasons” for the visit. what a strange thing to add.

    • Guest

Well that, and make sure it is not loaded first.

  • Lakeview Bob

Finally some good news in 2016. Darwinism at it’s best.

  • GayOldLady

That was a fitting end to his life.

  • Todd20036

Hand an inexperienced boy a loaded gun with the safety off. Good idea.

The only tragedy would have been if the kid hurt himself with it.

My only sympathy is for the boy who has to have been traumatized over the incident.

As for the bigoted gun nut, THANK YOU KARMA, TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH!!

    • j.martindale

Yeah, the kid will always feel some shame for the death. And it isn’t the kid’s fault.

      • Todd20036

        No, it’s Harmon’s fault and the kid’s dad’s fault.

        • Chucktech

And, assuming the kid didn’t deliberately shoot this asshole and was unfamiliar with guns in the first place, this little episode might dissuade him from any ammosexual tendencies.

          • Todd20036

My thoughts exactly. I doubt the kid was murderous. He was handed a gun, and he squeezed the trigger thinking the safety was on, or at least the gun was unloaded.

Daddy is going to have to talk to a few policemen about why he didn’t check the gun as well if his son was about to hold it.

          • clay

the kid shouldn’t have had his finger on the trigger, at all, so it’s clearly an example of adults failing to train and supervise him. If they let him put his finger on the trigger, simply shifting hands could have been enough pull.

          • Todd20036

There were several mistakes made. Inexperience is a valid excuse given that the boy was under the impression that there were 2 responsible adults with him.

            Unfortunately, he was wrong.

    • Rob NYNY

A lot of guns don’t have safeties any more, and can even be fired without being cocked.

      • Todd20036

        That makes it worse.
Mr. Gun Expert should have never given the gun to a boy in the first place.

      • Todd20036

I’ll bet he was showing it to give the kid some normalcy about holding a firearm.

I bet that kid will never hold a gun again in his life.

        • clay

Don’t bet on that. Trauma, and life, is just not that “clean”.

          • Todd20036

I disagree. He inadvertently killed a man, and his father will have to explain himself to police.

I cannot tell what he is thinking, but I doubt it was: COOOLLL!!!!!!

          • clay

That wouldn’t be the only motivation to touching a gun.

          • OdieDenCO

you assume to know the psychological make up of the boy. I’ve met several miscreants that would have said cool.

          • Todd20036

Were they miscreants at 16? That’s pretty sad.

          • OdieDenCO

yes! One of my best friends was shot at by one. Lucky the bullet missed.

          • Todd20036

          • TampaDink

I would hope that you are right but one of my dad’s 1st cousins accidentally shot & killed his little brother (shooter was 16, victim was 9). Although I suspect that played a part in his screwed up life, he never missed a chance to play around with loaded weapons. Like when he went after the man who his wife was leaving him for, on a high speed chase, firing off rounds at another moving vehicle….most likely while he was drunk off his ass. He lived to be 70, which was surprising.

        • Chucktech

I’ll bet he was showing it to give the kid some normalcy about holding a firearm.

“Hey, kid, stop being such a little faggot and hold this. See? Don’t that make ya feel more like a man?”

My mom once walked in on me spanking the monkey. There was this huge embarrasing moment when I’m hunched over the toilet bowl and she said “I’ll let you finish,” like THAT was gonna happen!

But she did say, “Well at least you take after your daddy because I saw your uncle Walter’s (my uncle) once when I walked into their room once in vacation and I don’t even know how they ever had children! Phhh!”

That’s my family- genteel to a fault.

        • greenmanTN

My dad did woodworking in his spare time, and I helped. i made lathe-carved candle holders for elementary and jr high school teacher gifts etc.

But he used to make fun of me a bit too, when I got things wrong. (This isn’t a complaint really, but an observation.) The screwdriver would slip or the nail would get bent and he would say something like “maybe if put some hair around it you coukd hit that target,” an oblique reference to vagina.

Boy did he have the wrong number!

But he was very accepting when I came out, so it all comes out in the wash.

  • BearEyes

good riddance to this very selfish and self centred prick – rights for me, but not for thee.
Hope the boy won’t be scarred by this.

  • That Jesus, I tell you. If his eye hadn’t been on the sparrow, he might have protected this jerk.

  • Silver Badger

As Mr. Harmon would have considered me to be a pervert, I suppose it would be ok to take a bit of perverse satisfaction in the incident.

  • pj

last week here in arizona a 5 year old boy found a gun in his home and shot his 3 year old brother to death. it was right before christmas. it was so deeply sad to hear this story. and yet a horror like this never seems to change anything. i wonder if my daughter is somewhere where there is a gun and someone shoots her. we are all living a nightmare so some people can have their toys.

    • Chucktech

pj, if shooting up a grammar school full of babies didn’t do it, nothing will.

“I view threats to that freedom as seriously as I do threats to my right to vote, or speak freely, or worship as I please,”

So, if ANY citizen ANY where in the US is denied a gun for ANY reason, it’s as if YOU aren’t allowed to vote, or a violation of your most precious idol?

What if MANY citizens in MANY places in the US are denied the right to vote, does it feel like someone from the government stole your gun?

    No, I didn’t think so.

All those years in the NRA, didn’t catch a basic safety class, apparently.

    • Cuberly

The weapon stored while loaded? Handing said weapon to a non-qualified stranger?

      Yep, he was a fool.

    • Bert_Bauer

“Whaddya know? We CAN pry it from you cold, dead hand!”

  • canoebum

A firearm, especially a handgun, is not a trophy, it’s a lethal tool. You don’t take it out of the case and show it off to people. For a Second Amendment guy, he didn’t seem to possess the common sense necessary to own a firearm. My pistol is only seen by other people when I’m either 1) at the range or 2) in the woods. Otherwise, no one ever sees it. When cleaning time comes, I go in my room and close the door.

    • Friday

Well, speaking of basic safety, at least everyone’s supposed to know you 1) Make doubly-sure it’s unloaded, and 2) Treat it like it’s loaded anyway.

    • Reality.Bites

I go to my room and close the door when I clean out my pistol too.

Ever since the first time my mother caught me doing it in the bathroom.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

I’m so tired of reporting, (looking at you Portland Press Herald, not JMG) that uses the phrase “the gun went off”.

Guns are not like Samsung cell phones. They do not spontaneously malfunction or fire. Either Harmon or the boy FIRED the gun. It obviously was accidental, but they fired the gun or actively did somethng that fired the gun.

The gun nuts always say ‘guns don’t kill people, people kill people’ until theirs an accidental shooting and then suddenly, ‘the gun went off’.

The only way to stop gun deaths is for people to carry more guns.
The NRA taught me that, and they never get things wrong.

  • TrollopeReader

the 16 year-old learned a lesson. so did his dad and the columnist.

    • Reality.Bites

Pretty sure the columnist’s forgotten it already. The knowledge went in and out of his brain like. Gee, I don’t know. What’s something that goes through a brain really fast. No, not a thought. None of those there.

While I’m for term limits for SCOTUS Justices (I think 25 years), I believe that subjecting the Justices to election introduces too much politics into the system. That’s the main reason that the Founding Fathers decided to have them appointed, so that they maintain a separation between Court and politics.

Even if Scalia proved that you can still be all-out partisan and still be a Justice.

    • Hue-Man

Move to Canada. All federal judges have mandatory retirement at 75. Some provinces and territories are at age 70.

I know some people love their jobs but I have absolutely no desire to work into my 80s. (I know, wait until I’m 79…)

      • Reality.Bites

I have no problem with someone working as long as they want. Betty White can work forever as far as I’m concerned. The difference is, no one has to hire her and if she’s hired for a project, they can fire her. Mandatory retirement is necessary for what would otherwise be a lifetime appointment.

As I’m sure you know, but others here won’t, our (appointed) senators also must retire at 75. Just imagine if the Americans could have gotten rid of Jesse Helms 45 years before he croaked.

  • RKitty01

  • bambinoitaliano

That’s the sad reality of many who buys into the concept of owning guns mean automatically they will be protected. They do not take the time to learn the safety and precaution of owning a piece of arm, let alone learning and continue to practice the use of one.

  • rusty57

First, I’d like to offer my sympathy to the family and friends of Mr Harmon and the young man who was holding the gun when it discharged.
Second, This tragedy was entirely avoidable. The very first thing I learned in a hunter safety class when I was 14 was to treat every gun as if it was loaded. You only take the safety off if you’re going to pull the trigger.
Mr Harmon certainly had a right to own a firearm, he had no right to behave in so irresponsible a fashion.

    • Reality.Bites

I couldn’t give a shit about his family. Why?

They were his family. I have a cousin who’s an NRA member. When he told me I turned away and shunned him. Zero tolerance for this shit. Your husband’s a gun nut? leave him and take the kids. Don’t put up with it. Don’t let it in your house or near you.

“I view threats to that freedom as seriously as I do threats to my right to vote, or speak freely, or worship as I please,” said the guy who opposed the Freedom to Marry. They say anything to maintain power, status, and their bank accounts. It really is useless to argue with them, because, as their getting in line for Trump has demonstrated, they don’t mean any of it. The logic of their arguments is a means to an unspoken end.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

This is why gun owners should at least be forced to have insurance. If we can have car insurance be mandatory then gun insurance should be as well.

I hate how newspapers report shooting deaths like they’re just some senseless tragedy. This stupid fucker was criminally negligent and lethally irresponsible, and while it’s fortunate that, this time, HE was the one who paid the ultimate price, his immature gun-fondling has made some poor kid a secondary victim.

  • EqualityForAll

I don’t own a gun (yet,) but I just may be forced to buy one over the course of the next year.

Still, as little as I know about guns, I do recall learning as a kid that you should never hand scissors over to someone with the sharp ends pointed in the wrong direction. Based on that simple lesson, I would assume that you should never hand someone a pistol with the barrel pointed in your own direction. Have I passed gun handling 101?

    • Ben in Oakland

      No, you failed it miserably.
The first rule is never handle a gun without first checking to make sure it is not loaded. The second is never handle a loaded gun unless you plan on shooting it.

    • Ben in Oakland

but I like you anyway. :0)

I know several of you don’t believe in God, but my mother does. And whenever I go on about the injustices done on gay people, she often goes: “Be patient. God shows His justice at His own time.” I doubt she meant a gun going off, but one takes what one gets.

  • While I’m fine with the karma involved, as a family therapist I think about how messed up the teen is going to be in terms of wrongly feeling responsible for killing another human.

    • Bert_Bauer

He’s hero. Maybe we should give him an award?

  • jonfromcalifornia

Somehow the words “conservative” and “thinker” just do NOT go together.

  • andrew

Sounds like an appropriate ending to his story.

  • Bill Harnsberger

No tears from Me. I was his target.

Not by his gun, but by his toxic, lie-filled, extremist rants against the LGBT community. Every week for years and years he’d pump out the latest bullshit in his Portland Press Herald column (I subscribe to the paper, which otherwise is a good one) from whatever fake news sources (including lots of hypocritical Bible cherrypicking) caught his eye or his own rancid and fact-free opinions.

Whenever a gay rights vote would come up, either in the legislature or via referendum, he was always on the front lines railing about how people like me were undeserving of equal rights for the most bullshit reasons. That the Press Herald kept this jerk on the payroll for so long defied their mission to shed light on issues, not darkness.

And to think his life ended because he didn’t follow the gun safety rules that he sniffed so pompously about. Of course I’m a responsible gun owner because something something Second Amendment. Harmon was killed not by a 16-year-old kid but by his own stupid negligence.

And now we’re going to see a bunch of accolades thrown in his direction. How he was a “dedicated, principled” and “was a mainstay of the newspaper business for 40 years” and blah blah blah. But at the end of the day, he was a decades-long hate peddler. I offer my condolences to his family and those who will mourn his loss. But I won’t be among them. He was a well-poisoner. And in the end he was felled by his own negligence around guns—an issue on which which he claimed superiority over the so-called liberal gun-control bedwetters he hated with unwavering virulence.

  • pebouky

oops there goesss another rubber tree plant…………….(maybe he can join Scalia in hell)

  • Da Spud Lord

Several supporters of gun control—whom I will not dignify with a link—seem quite gleeful that a staunch advocate of the Second Amendment was killed in such a manner. They’re already holding this up as an example of their theory that, “guns are too dangerous to own.” The reality, of course, is that firearms are only as safe or as dangerous as they are treated, just like any other complex tool. Complacency kills.

-DarkGoldenMan, someone whom I highly agree with.

Karma is a killer. Those gunsterbators and ammosexuals and gun addicts are too much into their addiction to pay attention to the fact that a gun in the home is twelve times more likely to be used on a resident than on an intruder. Until that happens, those idiots will keep killing and getting killed, making their homes the most dangerous places in the country. What makes someone such a coward that they they think they have to have a gun closely. Just a bunch of p*ssies. Normal people are brave enough to be able to function without a security blankie/gun nearby.
