Zsa Zsa Gabor Dies At Age 99

The New York Daily News reports:

Zsa Zsa Gabor, a Hollywood icon who personified the joy of glorious, unapologetic celebrity, has died. She was 99. The Hungarian-American actress and socialite passed away on Sunday after suffering a heart attack, TMZ reports. Her publicist Ed Lozzi confirmed to multiple outlets that she died in her Los Angeles home. She survived a series of health problems over the last decade, including an auto accident, a hip replacement, a stroke and a lung infection, and had been on life support the past five years.

Born in Hungary during World War I, Gabor was discovered in the 1930s as an opera singer. She and her sisters Magda and Eva soon became known more for their uninhibited flair and flamboyant personalities than their stage and musical skills. Zsa Zsa β€” the Paris Hilton of her generation β€” endeared herself to the celebrity media with a quick wit, a rich mane of blond hair, a carefully maintained exotic accent underscored by frequent repetition of the word β€œDah-ling,” and a well-polished set of comic one-liners about her love life.

    Rest in peace, Ms. Gabor.

When my grandfather died, we found a partial bottle of Four Roses in that high cabinet above the fridge. We cousins decided to toast granddaddy with the last of his stash. He really did keep it for medicinal purposes. As I took a sip, I almost gagged. I figure he must have dissolved a pound of rock candy in that fine liquor! I guess a little might soothe a minor sore throat. Bless his heart!

Not surprising. Four Roses old recently returned to serious drinkability. The stuff you encountered probably needed all that sweetening .

We weren’t exactly dealing with a class act. Paris Hilton seems talented in comparison. Dahlinks, let’s take a little trip down memory lane. Bitch tried to sway a jury by accusing the arresting officer bias…because he was gay. Only five years on

Class act, really. Tried to sway the jury in her DUI trial by accusing the arresting officer of bias…because he was gay. She was also afraid how the lesbians in jail would treat her. Five years on life support suggests the karma cafe gave her a slice of just desserts.

        • Eli

a-hem. (the following is partly tongue-in-cheek :o) ) Jack Daniels is a Tennessee whiskey. Not a Bourbon. And for many it is the classic. Just ask Frank Sinatra. Wonderful stuff. Nectar of the gods. Charcoal filtered. Drip by drip. Grew up on the stuff. I’m mentally voting you down (as I don’t want to risk your standing just because of a clear taste issue. :O) )

(and I love bourbon as well. what’s your brand? )

          • Butch

Basil Hayden’s. I drink whiskey maybe once a year but keep Basil around for the occasion.

          • Eli

I could fill a bookshelf with whiskeys. My choice depends on the usage Love Basil–less grassy than Maker’s Mark, but still overpowers a Manhattan. We’ve been getting some craft whiskeys up here in Michigan–some of those are pretty nice as well. Not the sweetness of Bourbon, but good.

          • T-Batwoman

I was thinking of Jim Beam, equally as disgusting, my bad πŸ˜›

I like Blanton’s and 10yr Bulleit is surprisingly smooth and flavorful πŸ˜€

Which do you like? I always like hearing others recommendations and trying them out πŸ˜€

          • Eli

Depends on my mood and what I looking for. I feel Blanton’s is excellent. Haven’t had the 10 yr Bulleit, have had lots of the regular Bulleit as well as their Rye (which I like). Old Weller is a bit too potent for me. Maker’s Mark is great straight, but I feel is wasted in a Manhattan. A friend brought over High West Whiskey, which is a blended Bourbon. Nice. Then I go over to Irish Whiskeys… Ryes… about the only ones I don’t care for (anymore) are the Canadian blends. But I certainly helped out Windsor during my college years. :o) There’s a Traverse City Whiskey which is nice.. and New Holland’s Beer Barrel Bourbon is also quite nice.

Jim Beam for me is great for mixing — it’s in my eggnog recipe right now. Their black label (8 year I think) is nice. Also like Black Bush (Bushmill’s aged…and the name!) See, wayyyy too many for my liver. But I’ll raise a glass to you and wish you many happy Blantons!

          • Michael In Atlanta

Jack Daniels is popular. But it’s that distinctive charcoal filtered flavor I find a little bitter. Personally, I like Maker’s Mark.

Quite a character. The HuffPo article intrigued me to Google him.
        From Wikipedia: “Robbery and stripping[edit]
On 25 July 2007, while sitting in his Rolls-Royce in Southern California von Anhalt was allegedly approached by three women whom he later described as attractive. He said they asked him to pose for pictures with them, at which point one of the women robbed him at gunpoint, taking his car keys, jewelry, wallet, driver’s license, and all his clothes. According to Anhalt, his assailants bound him and placed him in handcuffs, yet he managed to call the authorities on a cellular phone. Los Angeles police found him completely naked approximately one hour later. No handcuffs were found at the scene. The culprits apparently drove away in a Chrysler convertible.”

Melania Trump and Zsa Zsa Gabor have so much in common: shallow socialites who bagged big men and big money in order to further themselves in a celebrity lifestyle. Pretty in their expensive appearance but vapid.

Wonder how it felt to be one of ZsaZsa’s hand-me-downs.

      • johncAtl

Far better than it feels to be one of Trump’s hand-me downs. Although I believe Melania is looking forward to being a hand-me down. Those little hands creep her out.

      • Michael Abbett

Well I can’t ask the lady I worked for, she went before Zsa Zsa. I think he’s gone too, but I am not sure.

    • johncAtl

I can’t imagine that she wouldn’t be remembered. Although in the last few years the awards shows are rushing through that part of the show. Too bad, because it’s one of things I look forward to in the shows.

    http://io9.gizmodo.com/dumpstarwars-cry-babies-struggle-to-save-face-after-bl-1790256837

“Rogue One made box office history on its opening weekend, bringing around $155 million in North America and another $135.5 million overseas, making it the top movie globally and the second highest grossing December opening in North America on record. It seems the right-wingers’ #DumpStarWars movementβ€”a boycott of Rogue One, which prominent conservative conspiracy theorist Mark Dice called β€œfeminist propaganda” in a now-deleted tweetβ€”didn’t work out too great.”

    • i’m hearing from people who’ve seen it: a) don’t bother with 3-D b) it’s either really dull or really good and c) none of the main characters really stand out, except the robot.

      • jimbo65

It was great. It’s a different feel to it as far as Star Wars goes. It’s a great lead in to the original film. I disagree about the lack of stand outs. I liked most of the cast especially the blind force sensitive guy. And the last act, especially the last 15 minutes were great.

    • whatever sins she committed in life, she paid for with 5 years on life support. i wouldn’t wish that on anyone. i’m not saying people on it should just give up, but that is a very, very, very long time to be chained to a bed, utterly dependent on other people. and you’re not wrong, we’re not supposed to say it but it is a relief on those responsible for that level of care, after that long, esp if those people are non-professionals and only family.

Deanna keeps on griping about this one story that’s important to her but that Joe for whatever reason hasn’t mentioned here. Especially on articles about trans issues, as dear Deanna here seems to suffer from transphobia.

        Ignoring her is best option.

My hubby got all depressed that “too many people are dying all of a sudden” and I pointed out to him that, even though sure, there were famous movie stars, authors, and artists who were celebrities, television astronomically raised the number of popular faces, and the fact that they have been in our living rooms weekly or daily in syndication makes them feel even closer.

Anyone who was in their 30’s in the 60’s is over 75 now. And while some of them kept great care of themselves- say, Angela Lansbury, who is apparently in great shape but she’s still 91! – a lot of them did not, and many of them, especially the musical celebrities, live lifestyles that were positively dangerous. Why Ozzie Osborne or Keith Richards are even alive is a huge mystery.

We need to recognize that this “sudden die-off” isn’t a reflection of a particular bad year, but a reflection of the fact that there are a HUGE number of household names that are in their 80’s and 90’s, who simply aren’t going to live forever, even if they still look young in reruns.

That doesn’t make the loss of any individual any less tragic or melancholy, but we really need to stop acting like it’s some sort of surprise.

    • Treant

I just read an article saying that 2016 wasn’t actually any worse than any other year (it’s better than 2010 was in terms of number and cumulative star power of the deceased!)

I think we’re just adding on the suck-assed Donnie election and rightfully calling it an all around awful year.

      • lymis

        I agree about the year.

    • CanuckDon

That’s the fact that I’m aware of as well although the very sad thing is that many of the notable musical artists coming out of the ’60s and ’70s achieved that through their passion and exceptional talent and wisdom. The mid-’60s began the era of individualism and personal expression in music which supported and encouraged individualism and freedom in its listeners….something that the rightwing has been fighting ever since.
