WaPo Poll: Majority Of Republicans Say They Believe Donald Trump Actually Won The Popular Vote

The Washington Post reports:

Amid the speculation on whether the electoral college will refuse to make Donald Trump president, many Trump opponents are pinning their hopes on one glaring fact: Hillary Clinton’s sizable win in the popular vote.

Clinton’s lead now exceeds 2.8 million votes (more than 2.1 percent of the total vote) and continues to grow. Many Democrats hope this fact alone might persuade Republican electors to reject Trump in favor of some alternative. But this hope faces a serious challenge: Half of all Republicans actually think Trump won the popular vote.

In a nationally representative online survey of 1,011 Americans conducted by Qualtrics between Dec. 6 and 12, we asked respondents, “In last month’s election, Donald Trump won the majority of votes in the electoral college. Who do you think won the most popular votes?”

Twenty-nine percent said Donald Trump won the popular vote. This is a slightly larger proportion than in a recent Pew survey in which 19 percent said Trump won the popular vote.

Respondents’ correct understanding of the popular vote depended a great deal on partisanship. A large fraction of Republicans — 52 percent — said Trump won the popular vote, compared with only 7 percent of Democrats and 24 percent of independents.

In addition, Trump refuses to ‘believe’ that the Russians had anything to do with any hacking. Basically, HE knows better than every single security department in this nation. That being the case, I say have him hire a private security agency to follow him around. After all, the gov’t is apparently incapable of providing the type of security he wants.

    • Nasty Girl Brianna

This is the problem with anti-science. People like Trump, and a large percentage of this nation for that matter, who think that you can look at irrefutable facts and either choose to believe them or disbelieve them. For Trump, reality is totally flexible and completely malleable. Thus Trump won in a landslide without the aid or assistance of either the FBI or the Russians. Quid pro quo.

Holy shit Republicans Trump literally lost th popular vote by the biggest margin of history HOW can you torn that into winning the popular vote?

    • Halou

Because Trump keeps on tweeting again and again about how he actually won the popular vote, and that Hillary’s lead only exists because tens and hundreds of millions of “illegals” voted Democrat.
Because Fox News, InfoWars, Breitbart, and whatever Russia’s got keep pumping out an endless stream of micro-stories repeating the lie.

      • “for the Democrat.”
        “for the Democratic candidate.”

        • Chucktech

I agree, except IMO it’s not incorrect to say someone “voted Democrat.” They could’ve voted “Republican,” too.

“Democrat Party,” or “Democrat policies,” or “Democrat ideas,” OTOH, is nothing but childish, churlish RW asshattery.

          • cleos_mom

            No.

It’s the Democratic and Republican parties. The closest equivalent would be “Republic” or “Repub” Party.

And the “apple” itself (Genesis just says “fruit”) is a sly dig at earlier religions, especially the northern European ones that gave us most of our Christmas celebration.

          • The Return of Traxley

That’s the thing. God created everything, including the universe but did not create Satan, and did not destroy him even though he’s been fucking up God’s creation that he made in his own image. Fucking them up so bad that god allowed his people to be taken to Egypt and made slaves, but eventually got them outta there, only to make them wander around the wilderness for 40 years, and later get the shit beat out of them.

Then one day he said fuck it, I’m hitting the reset button on all of this, but let one several hundred year old dude in on his plan and told him to build this bigass ship. All the animals said hey, two of us better get our asses over to the middle east — the rest of us are fucked. So polar bears swam across the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and sloths somehow got there. All the animals got their own cabins and the old dude apparently stocked enough food for each of them and his family for 40 days while god flooded the planet, including all the vegetation, until a white dove came down with a branch from an olive tree — where the hell did THAT come from? But hey, the water went away and all the animals went back home, only to find that all their friends and food were destroyed, so they probably had to resort to eating each other, leaving some to survive some kind of twisted natural selection that would make Charles Darwin murder a basket of kittens.

But no, Satan was still around, having taken a 40 day cigarette break from ruining everything while god was distracted while watching his creation get wiped out.

Everthing went back to normal. God let humans die painful deaths, allowed a bunch of sick fucks run around slaughtering masses of innocent folks, and let other sick fucks torture and kill his own sales reps.

Finally god said screw this, I’m bored. So he sent one of his minions down to earth, who said to this one girl hey, this omnipotent dude who lives beyond the sky likes you, no he REALLY likes you and wants to have a kid with you. This chick freaked out because she’d never even MET some sky-dwelling guy — she didn’t get out much. So one night she woke up and found this invisible being making sexy times, and nine months later she found herself explaining that her bun in the oven was actually the result of a hookup with a deity who wanted to spend some time on earth, not not as himself, but as himself. It’s complicated, she said. Her husband was all like, whatever, and she popped the kid in a feeding trough in a filthy barn. Some paranoid asshole king found out about this, and for shits and giggles he sent an army out to slice up all the babies in the general vicinity.

Things went OKAY for a while, and God sat back and watched himself grow up into a precocious brat who liked to show off. Then when he became a grown-up he hung out with whores and sleazy financial types and started fucking around with himself. He had some people talk shit about himself, and others got really sick of his smugness and starting planning to take him out. Things got so bad that one night that he went to a park, got on his knees and begged himself not to murder himself. Kind of like suicide, but with more crazy. It didn’t end well because he let some sociopaths beat the shit out of him and nail him to a wooden thing because reasons, out in public, until he died. The people seemed to like it.

Anyway, he got tired of being dead, so he brought himself back to life, did a farewell tour, and went back beyond the sky to himself. Beyonce would have loved the exit. He said he’d drop by again, but it would be a surpise.

Finally, god picked a homophobic, misogynistic grifter (not unlike Joel Osteen) to give his earth people something to think about. He dropped this dude alone on an island, where he started writing some REALLY batshit stories. It had everything: mass killings, evil demons, whores, fire, and a guy who showed up saying he was in charge. Kind of like The Walking Dead, but with a bigger budget for special effects.

And again, like The Walking Dead, it ended with a poorly-handled season-ending cliffhanger.

            FIN

There’s always that odd contradiction of a god who supposedly created the entire Universe having expectations of his human creation that don’t pan out — and then being unable to move on without using a very human religious ritual as a vehicle. They believe it because the are idiots. Plain and simple. I have a wingnut Facebook friend who proudly posted an article that said Trump won. In the comment area she said “SEE, Trump did win the popular vote!” The article said that Trump won the popular vote by one million over Hillary. The trouble was the news site was fake. When I pointed that out to her all I heard back was crickets. No doubt she still believes Trump won by 1 million votes.

You’re assuming a body of political appointees and party True Believers understand their rights and duties to the Republic (and not to their handlers) and have any incentive to act on them.

The Electors, whose names are public information, have been getting thousands of letters. I’d be quite surprised if any of them haven’t given at least some thought to their role. Of course, many Republican ones are Trump supporters, some are GOP-firsters, some (mistakenly) think their oath and state regulations supersede their constitutional authority. That leaves some who may see a Trump presidency as a catastrophe. I despair that that number will be too small.

All this was inspired by the principle – which is quite true in itself –
      that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility;
because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in
the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or
voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they
more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they
themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed
to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their
heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that
others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even
though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to
their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think
that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie
always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a
fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who
conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well
how to use falsehood for the basest purposes.

      Adolf Hitler.

“The final key to the way I promote is bravado. I play to people’s fantasies. People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That’s why a little hyperbole never hurts. People want to believe something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular.

How about the Dems? Per WikiLeaks:

Ivy wonders how Clinton can combat Trump’s larger than life appeal, worrying that simply ‘defaulting to policy’ won’t work.

Seems about right – the US falls pretty High on the Ignorance Index
    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/2784c2b9f73ab6ceaced27b1607a1ca1f1b66aad323cba443dd36edbb272f736.png

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Maybe I’m biased, but I have a bit of a problem believing that Canada ranks higher than Russia on an ignorance index. It may depend on the definitions, and what’s reported by the countries.

This OECD ranking reported by The Guardian seems to give a more accurate picture. Despite spending more time in school than the average, the US seems to be barely making the OECD average in outcomes.

      https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2010/dec/07/world-education-rankings-maths-science-reading

      https://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2010/12/7/1291740184391/PISA-rankings-within-OECD-001.jpg

      • That_Looks_Delicious

I think you’re reading the scale backwards; the higher rank represents (I believe) the greater ignorance. But I do have a serious problem with these supposed rankings because I wonder what it is that they’re testing. I’ve met plenty of Brits, Australians and Koreans and I have a really hard time believing that they’re less ignorant as a whole than the French, Spanish or Israelis. Especially the Australians. I’ve got stories.

But, in general, I think it is true that people who live in very large countries tend to be less interested and less knowledgeable about the rest of the world, because they tend to think of where they live as “the world”.

        • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

The last paragraph sums it up accurately.

  • They have to believe they won the popular vote instead of winning by the quirks of the rule. But WE have to show them, that they’re not the majority, they’re opinions are less then useless, and that their ignorance will not be tolerated.

It depends on how badly Donald Trump crashes the United States of America.

If the next 4 years are “merely” mired in administration in-fighting and incompetence and dysfunction and gridlock, Democrats will have a huge problem puncturing that bubble.

But if Trump manages to fuck up to the point that affects Christendom’s ability to buy cheap stuff from Walmart or gets us into a real, honest-to-god war with China from some blusterous blunder, that might do it, but how badly will we be damaged?

Of course. A majority of Republicans have been well trained since they were toddlers to believe preposterous tales to be true, and if they don’t believe, they are shunned as terrible people. Evidence, no matter how legitimate, that doesn’t support the preposterous tales is dismissed as evil lies perpetrated by Democrats and/or Satan. The time has come to dump the Electoral College. It was only put in the Constitution as a sop to the rural southern states so they could boost their political clout by counting 3/5ths of their slaves as citizens. It was a bad deal at the time that has no place in a modern, highly connected, media-driven society.

    • TallBearNC

If it had been abolished, Clinton would be president. I’d only say the EC has done their job IF they reject trump. Even if they do, it still needs to go. This elector crap is BS. Potus should be 100% national, popular vote.

      • Moebym of the Resistance

Seriously, did we only keep it because it’s a tradition, and not because it’s proven its worth by actually preventing despots from attaining office?

        • Gianni

Five times since its inception it has allowed the candidate the voters didn’t choose, to become President! If that doesn’t prove what a bad setup it is, nothing else will. It has a built-in flaw that twice in the last sixteen years has given us a President that the majority of voters didn’t choose. If it’s kept because of tradition, I’d say, “Fuck Tradition and let’s get on with using common sense in our presidential elections.”

Hate, mistrust, and fear are easy and come naturally, especially in poorly educated superstitious (read religious) people. Manners, respect, and common decency are hard and have to be cultivated, especially for poorly educated and superstitious people.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Because the facts don’t say what they want. The facts say that their religion is a scam to keep them quiet and submissive to the 1%. The facts say that people aren’t inferior just because they look different or speak a different language or has a uterus. The facts tell them that their jobs are bad for them and that even those bad jobs are disappearing. The facts tell them that they’re not going to become billionaires themselves.

i think that looking at the truth would show them that they’ve been conned for decades and that they helped con themselves for miserable and pathetic and selfish reasons. That’s where the sunk cost fallacy kicks in; they’ve already invested so much into it that they would have to lose what’s left of their pride in order to see it.

Now it takes Dahnald a matter of hours before he posts a tweet projecting his own ills. And, his minions will lap it up.

      It’s never when they do…

    • SoCalGal20

Yes, that’s why they’re called Deplorables, asshole!

Also, I’m going to refer to him as Gaslighter-in-Chief from now on. No wonder Melania wants to stay in NY.

      • BobSF_94117

Clinton used the word “deplorables” once. How many times did Trump call her supporters “losers”, among other things. I suppose it’s her fault for choosing an unusual word…

        • Mikey

that’s because them there ain’t no deplorables.. they wuz born in thuh U.S of A, they cain’t be deplorted.

OMG… 2016 just keep taking. Never giving.
… Unless you called getting screwed, giving.

What’s new? The majority of Republicans believe, or say they believe, a lot of incorrect bull shit.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    OT- ZSA ZSA, gone @ 99 🙁

  • SoCalGal20

Having just read some twitter comments, I’m guessing a portion of those respondents believe that CA doesn’t count (because we had bajillions of illegals vote and we’re liberals, you know), therefore Trump won the popular vote. Btw, I would be happy if CA accommodated those douchebag’s wishes and seceded and then my tax money wouldn’t be wasted on such vile people.

  • JellyDonut

They are idiots. They do not watch real news they get all their information from Faux and the garbage trump mouthpieces spew.

    • Lazycrockett

Its not even faux that much anymore its their damn facebook feed.

Rest In Peace to The Queen Of Outer Space!

    • Ninja0980

Honestly, given her quality of life the last few years this is a death I don’t feel as sad about.
      She’s finally free from pain.

      • Bad Tom

Freedom from uncontrollable pain is a genuine blessing.

      When Letterman was funny.

    • David From Canada

I liked her sister, Eva Gabor (Green Acres), better. She seemed warm and pleasant while Zsz Zsa came across as semi-bitchy and shallow.

      • boobert

Yes , she had her moments. When I lived in Philly, she played a dinner theater and stopped the show because she didn’t like looking at the handicapped people in the audience. They nearly ran her out of town.

      • jmax

When Green Acres was part of TVLand’s programming, they ran a commercial pointing out that the show starred “Eva Gabor, not Zsa Zsa! Eva Gabor will not harm you!”

  • Henry Auvil

Of course they do. They also believe that only he can eradicate ISIS, that tax cuts to his cronies will bring back the coal mining industry, that he’s a devout Christian (if not the Messiah himself), and that Hillary Clinton is the most demonic person who ever opened an email account. They’ll also tell you that Obama increased the unemployment rate and destroyed corporate earnings. Welcome to post-truth America.

  • Michael Abbett

I just can’t anymore. There is no bottom to their stupidity.

  • NZArtist

Yeah well when Trump is the one spreading those lies, of course they believe it.
America is soooo fucked. I mean seriously, soooooo fucked.

  • Bad Tom

    OK, then!!!

Accepting a world view that is demonstrably wrong is fine until it kills you.
Or, perhaps, everyone on the planet.

Let’s have a pool on when!* Dibs on January 22, 2017. 10 AE** on the barrel-head.
    ——-
    * A dead pool, as it were.
    ——-
** AE, Amero Equivalents, or stuff that might have been worth a dollar, back in the day. Money post-apocalypse will be useless, so we need something that will still have value, like non-contaminated food, per meal, or potable water, per drink. Maybe a little later, clean air, per breath. I don’t think anyone will have the chops to run a futures market. This is sad, because I predict that the value of these commodities will skyrocket. Plain old hording will have to do.

Speaking of stupid, here’s some more.
These fools are just as dumb as the stupid twink my cousin used to be friends with.
Even when the one and done anti-gay Congresswoman from my district who he worked for told him and everyone else that she was opposed to LGBT rights and would do everything in her power to thwart them, he still worked for her.
He cited her on fiscal issues and how she really didn’t mean all the things she said.

    And 2016 claims another!

Bernard Fox, prolific actor, but probably best known to many as Dr. Bombay, from Bewitched…

I remember him in the Mummy, also one of his last film before he retired.

      • houstonray

        Oh yeah!!! Forgot about that!

    • Mike__in_Houston

I had a crush on him going back to Bewitched.

So, at least 50% of Republicans are as easily trained as a pet robot. Then again, we knew this about them already.

  • Max_1
    • Skeptical_Inquirer

OK, that just makes me believe more in the Russians really doing a lot of crazy shit to make Trump President.

      • Max_1

Precisely… Why would Russia be so concerned about one Donald J. Trump? I mean, what investments did they have behind him to win and what is in it for them to ensure he won?

    • grada3784

How long will it be before America becomes a Russian protectorate?

    • Tiger Quinn

A foreign power’s state-run news agency is concerned about our election, and Trump’s status in such – why that doesn’t just chill the blood of every actual American, I do not understand.

  • sadoldguy

About 50% of republicans believe what Trump says, ignorant or stupid, they are scary and bad for the world.
But the ones I really worry about know he is lying, and love him for it.
They respect brutal dictators and shun humanitarians.
    They want a President Troll.
    Won’t end well.

  • OpinionDeMia

This is similar to religions to me.

Rather than having the intellectual curiosity to think outside of an imposed template, you accept the confines.

That’s why it’s so important for governments to choose or control the media.

    Hack The Template!

They also believe that Obama was not born in the USA. We have a lot of gullible people who don’t let facts get in the way of their world views. Making America Great. Blah, blah, blah.

  • DaveMiller135

I guess Santorum called it: They’re not ever going to be the party of the smart people.

Santorum was right. That’s gotta be at least 2 signs of the Apocalypse.

  • Talisman

I believe that these people are not stupid or ignorant. Their problem is their inability to think critically.

They are often indoctrinated by their faith to accept and do the things that they are told, without question. They are made to believe that their leaders have their best interests at heart and to distrust anything that is different or unusual.

So, they vote for the person they perceive is “like” them or that their minister/preacher/priest says to vote for. And they live in bubbles where their own beliefs and attitudes are reinforced. They see and hear what they want or need to hear.

It doesn’t matter whether Fox News, Facebook, or even Brietbart exists – these people will always live in this bubble and have no reason or desire to change.

And that’s why America is doomed to fail.

    • Rt1583

“It doesn’t matter whether Fox News, Facebook, or even Brietbart exists”

      True…to an extent.

The bubbles have always existed but up until the last 20-30 years those bubbles were insular. To a point they were relatively harmless because they couldn’t, on a grand scale, gel into one.

With the advent of readily and easily, available news and information on a national and global scale as well as readily and easily available ability to connect they are, for better or worse, able to gel into one.

  • Rt1583

“In a nationally representative online survey of 1,011”

This is one reason I don’t trust statistics and statisticians. There is absolutely no way that 0.00035% of the population is nationally representative.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m wondering when the majority of Americans will view the GOP as traitors who will gladly sell out the country in exchange for having their white male Christian privilege patted on the head.

I just hope he’s fine with being known to have knowingly voted for a traitor. When he boohoos about persecution when the Trump situation blows up, everybody should tweet him this damn picture with a statement about how conservatives love to dish out bitchery but can’t take it.
