Obama Slams Republicans For Siding With Russia: Ronald Reagan Would Roll Over In His Grave [VIDEO]

CNN reports:

President Barack Obama asserted Friday that a September confrontation with his Russian counterpart prompted Moscow to cease its hacking of the US election.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in China, Obama said he insisted President Vladimir Putin “cut it out” and told him “there were going to be serious consequences if he didn’t.”

“In fact we did not see further tampering of the election process,” Obama said at a year-end news conference. “But the leaks through WikiLeaks had already occurred.”

He unleashed a string of putdowns, describing America’s Cold War adversary as “a smaller country, they are a weaker country. Their economy doesn’t produce anything anyone wants to buy except oil and gas and arms. They don’t innovate.”

Obama attacked Republicans for siding with an arch-enemy of the United States because of their dislike of Democrats. “Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave,” Obama said of recent GOP praise of Russia.

He warned, “Mr. Putin can weaken us just like he is trying to weaken Europe if we start buying into notions that it is okay to intimidate the press or lock up dissidents.”

  • TexasBoy

Hasn’t Obama heard? Reagan is considered a RINO today.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

… In today’s GOP he’d be branded a socialist and promptly primaried by an up and coming teabagger.

He was one of them faggy California liberal elites, from Hollyweird even!

    Speak that truth

  • PickyPecker
    • In an ideal world electors ought to vote according to their party decree. But this year’s election has been rigged. Not only has a candidate, whose suitability is highly questionable, won the election, he had also been propelled to victory by Russian meddling.

In the 1787 Federalist Papers Alexander Hamilton stated that a key role of the Electoral College was to prevent a “desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils”.

Electors are facing this task this year, following the CIA report that concluded Russia’s covert effort to influence the election outcome.

Trump’s supporters are just a minority in America, who need to get real themselves. The rest of the world certainly doesn’t want another Putinist leader around.

      • m_lp_ql_m

        What’s this a quote of?

      • grada3784

Undoubtedly he knew of the Kingdom of Poland and how foreign interference with political process led to the destruction and partition of that country.

    • dr morbius

Do you people REALLY think there would not be bloodshed if the EC picked someone besides Trump?

      • lymis

Widespread bloodshed? No. But with no snark at all, the Secret Service would have to be even more than usually on their toes to protect whoever became President, regardless of their party.

  • Dirk Prophet

Agree or disagree with Obama, at least he can intelligently speak the English language.

We will have four years listening to a president whose English is on a third or fourth grade level.

    • Mark Neé Fuzz

I would have said four years of English at the severely retarded level, but get your point.

    • dcurlee

We don’t have to listen to it. We will only see it on twitter

  • AtticusP

Reagan’s probably been spinning in his grave for years, but I’ll bet that the rise of Trump has stepped up the pace considerably.

    • Dirk Prophet

He’s been spinning for years but he just can’t remember what for.

      I’m a bad person.

    • MT YVR

Strap some magnets to him and fill the lining of his coffin with them. Ta da. Energy crisis averted.

    • cleos_mom

Reagan got to play the role of a lifetime for 8 years. If he could perceive anything from the grave, I doubt he’d care enough to so much as twitch a toe.

    • Frostbite

And you know what, he doesn’t give a shit.

      • David L. Caster

Depends on what one means by being a Republican. There’s Reagan Republicans, and then there’s what Republicans are now. The former kind were not particularly lovable, but the latter variety is just plain revolting.

  • bkmn

More proof that the Republicans don’t care about the good of the country. They only care about being in power – no matter the cost.

    Or warned him.

  • boobert

You can’t shame republicans, they don’t care ! They conspired with russia to cheat and it appears they got away with it. Worse, is that voters think that’s okay.

    • Chucktech

Worse, is that voters think that’s okay.

The fact that Trump’s base isn’t upset by that is nothing short of traitorous.

      • Gerry Fisher

Trump’s voters are 33% of the adults in the country as some estimates have put it. We don’t need all of them or even a majority of them. We need some of them, and we need to win the independents.

      • DesertSun59

It’s proof that our nation is no longer viable.

      • dr morbius

That’s a pretty wide definition. Gonna hang millions of em?

    • Gerry Fisher

Politics today is all about swaying the independents…general public opinion. If we can isolate Republicans and get independents on our side, they’ll be forced to change their position.

  • BobSF_94117

So why the fuck is he going on vacation? I honestly do not get it. Russia has manipulated our government, and not just the presidential election, but several House and Senate races. How is this not a crisis?

    • danolgb

A Presidential vacation is not the same as one of our vacations. He’s always in contact with his cabinet and advisers.

Under Trump, that may be different, however.

      • BobSF_94117

I realize that, but it’s 4:30 on Friday afternoon, three days before the Electoral College votes, and he’s talking about how we have to make sure this doesn’t happen IN FUTURE.

        What the fuck about now?!?!

        • danolgb

There is no constitutional method for the President to change the results of the election. Sorry, but that’s just the facts. He can however direct the resources to make Russia feel pain. At least until Trump comes in and undoes everything. Maybe if people hadn’t used the Russian hacking and the slanted reporting of it to justify their own biases, we wouldn’t be in this mess. The hacking was only half the story. The other half of the story were the voters who stayed home because they believed the emails justified their sitting out of the election. Those would be the far-left who were the useful idiots who cost us the election.

          • KarenAtFOH

If the election has been manipulated by a foreign power, how can it be considered a valid election? I guess that’s what the Electoral College is supposed to fix, but they are being threatened and intimidated by Trump. He should be arrested.

          • danolgb

You are correct in that the Electoral College is the only thing constitutionally standing in the way. However, the chances of them changing their votes (these are partisan individuals) is not realistic.

          • Martin

What I don’t understand is, why even have an EC when, what, 30-some states have laws such that they are compelled to “vote” according to their individual constituencies. That’s not really voting if you have absolutely no choice or right of conscience in the matter. And, on top of that Congress can simply disregard the “votes” of contrary electors anyway, on a whim. I don’t think the peope who instituted this entity thought it trough very well, and failed to adequately explain the parameters. In short, it’s a hot mess, and something needs to be done about it.

          • danolgb

The EC made a bit more sense in a time when there wasn’t a form of mass communication or quick travel for a candidate to campaign to all of the states at the time. It’s really an archaic construct that doesn’t really work in the modern era. But until we amend the Constitution otherwise, it’s the law.

          • Martin

I hope it can be eliminated. If we consider the strictly popular vote, then it’s plain to see that the EC itself has backfired and ‘elected’ exactly the person it was designed in the first place to vanquish. It’s absolutely perverse.

          • NancyP

Maybe the President can’t change the election, but the electors, given enough gonads, could change the election constitutionally, though it hasn’t been done before. The sitting and incoming Republican Senators could start impeachment proceedings. Really, I don’t think a damn thing is going to happen unless people are out in the streets rioting, or the EC and UK put us on least-favored-nation trade status.

          • BobSF_94117

Of course he can’t change the election. But the election is not over. It is not finished until the EC gives 270 or more votes to one candidate. And, if they don’t, it would last even longer as it goes to the House.

          • danolgb

The Electoral College is not some magical wise body of voters. They’re partisan individuals selected by state parties to represent that party should the state vote for their candidate. The republicans are getting everything they want from Trump. There’s not going to be some mass defection.

          • BobSF_94117

It wouldn’t take a mass defection to send the election to the House. I realize it’s very, very unlikely. I was just pointing out that it ain’t quite over.

      • Frostbite

It’s ok, Trump has his people working on it, the best people, blah blah blah.

  • JMG; Let me suggest a New Year’s Resolution for you….for every two blogs about hateful Republicans/religious right-wing bigots, you have to post ONE good news item. Have you read the comments, Joe? People are feeling so low and some express hopelessness. GIVE US SOME GOOD NEWS. We need to know that we are a vibrant, healthy and strong LGBTI community! We need hope. And commenters, how about some great news of what is going on in your community? Trump did NOT win the popular vote. We have strong straight allies out there. Adversity only makes us stronger. Let’s unite in action and thought. Think positive – light a candle in the darkness. We will overcome – we HAVE overcome. Happy New Year everyone.

Fuck, imagine if a Kenyan official hacked for Barack Obama in 2008. The GOP would have exploded in violent coup rhetoric. Uh, wait, they still did, but they would have shot for sure.

        • Dazzer

The strange thing about his politics is that he ought to be taking every opportunity to condemn Russia – not just in its USSR days, but very definitely in its present-day iteration.

But he’s so consumed by his own misogyny that he can’t concentrate on any wider Trotskyite picture of international affairs.

You’ll have to believe me on this, but Perdue’s ideology is so inconsistent that it takes a special type of crazy just to hold the views he does.

          • TrollopeReader

I’ll do about *two* return comments … I’ll not block him …and i like to point out his errors … but the repetition and snark reminds me of Katrina Pierson and KellyAnne Conway ….

          • Dazzer

I use him as a chew toy if I’m in the mood. But it does get frustrating that he claims to be a Trotskyite and then is incapable of holding any kind of Trot line whn it comes topolitics.

Democrats are extremely dense and gullible. “There is only one party in the United States, the Property Party … and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat. Republicans are a bit stupider, more rigid, more doctrinaire in their laissez-faire capitalism than the Democrats, who are cuter, prettier, a bit more corrupt — until recently … and more willing than the Republicans to make small adjustments when the poor, the black, the anti-imperialists get out of hand. But, essentially, there is no difference between the two parties.” Gore Vidal

Republicans will be outraged that Obama insinuated that Ronald Reagan is still dead when they believe he rose from the grave on the third day and ascended into heaven.

    • andrew

It may just be that as the Republican Party is currently constituted, that Ronald Reagan wouldn’t get their nomination. As ideologically conservative as Reagan was, he often realized that compromise was necessary for our government to function properly.

      • Homo Erectus

Reagan, like Trump started life as a Democrat.

        • TampaZeke

And Reagan, like Trump, was a puppet controlled by people much smarter and much more evil than he.

Actually, EXACTLY like the 2000 year old hoax. The same people believe both.

Not quite. JC hung out for about 6 weeks before he ascended into orbit.

          • TampaZeke

So did Reagan, but, like Jesus, only those who claimed he was a god reported seeing him.

  • Lazycrockett

I dont think that was much of a slam against the GOP.

  • JaniceInToronto

The rethugs really do not care what Obama says or does. They just want him out of office any way it can be done. I’m sure the Republicans are feeling repressed and oppressed, poor them. Oh, and Putin isn’t a commie any more so he’s one of the good guys on the planet, just like that lovely man from the Philippines, Mr. Rodrigo R. Duterte. Rodrigo knows how to get things done. He won the 1000+ Trump fan award this year.

        • Gianni

It’s not a theory – you and your Republican brothers and sisters oppose ENDA when it has a chance of becoming law (and thus tacitly promote bigotry), support racist cops, engage in union busting and wars of aggression and oppose the Bill of Rights.

You can be like the other dunce above and point out that Democrats lie and Republicans don’t bother but that proves nothing except that you’re exceptionally gullible.

Piglet, I’ve been consciously gay since my teens, and I have no friends who defend Reagan.

          • greenmanTN

Hey, wait a minute. i thought *I* was the piglet! You are so fickle.

You’re a pig and so are other defenders of Reagans murderous campaign to do nothing about HIV/AIDS and of the pig B Clintons DOMA

          • greenmanTN

            Flatterer!

          • Bill_Perdue

            Don’t latter yourself, piglet.

          • greenmanTN

I promise not to latter myself.

          • Bill_Perdue

Aww, thanks for the correction. Don’t flatter yourself, your status as a racist, warmongering, union busting piglet is set in concrete.

I prefer Christopher Hitchens’ assessment: “a cruel and stupid lizard.”

The point here isn’t to ‘defend Reagan’ it’s to point out that the conservatives have distorted their own ‘principles’ so badly that even Reagan would turn in his grave.

  • Xiao Ai

At what point were the Republicans slammed in the video or on CNN’s website? I must have missed something.

    • Friday

Right now it’s a better idea to let some Republicans save face about getting out from behind Trump, (if they will,) than seem to be trying to re-litigate the election itself. It really doesn’t need to be said over and over who has been supporting all this skullduggery if not perpetrating it. Trump even asked them to do it *more.*

  • DesertSun59

It’s not just Obama who’s appalled by this. It’s absolutely obvious to all of us that the GOP and Trump have sold this nation down the river.

  • Brian in Valdosta

    Boom!

Damn, I am going to miss this man.

  • MABPHX

Amen and why is no one calling out Corey with the Hatch act? #notmypresident #revote

While only being reanimated for a few short months former President Ronald Reagan was asked to comment. Sadly, the press conference ended abruptly when the former president flew into a rage when it was explained to him who the current president is. When pressed for further comment Ronald Reagan stormed off the stage where he was rushed to an awaiting limo. Sources close to the incident say that the former president was acting erratic and asking for brains leaving some to question what this might mean in the upcoming months for United States-Russia relations. More as the story develops.

Obama told Putin to “Cut it out”. Wow, what a statement! Obama doesn’t realize that you have to put some heft and action behind your words and now Putin and Trump have run away with the American election.
    Cut it out, Obama………….
