Morning View: Island House Key West

Alas, our annual holiday week at the eternally fabulous Island House is drawing to a close and tomorrow morning we’ll head back up the Overseas Highway to Fort Lauderdale. This year’s visit got off to a bit of a rainy start, but it’s been clear skies and 80 degrees ever since. (And yes, I’ve been noting the 10 degree wind chill back home with no small amount of satisfaction.) Anyway, aside from weather gloating, the purpose of this post is to say we’ll have an impromptu JMG meetup at Hunters in Wilton Manors on Sunday. I’ll be there from around 7pm until Love Is In The Air. I’m told they now provide confetti in lieu of cocktail napkins.

Keep having fun Joe and be like me, glad that you aren’t in Minneapolis where they are getting 6-9″ of snow followed by a temp drop to -15F.

    • TuuxKabin

      Ay, mama.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

WIndchill of -20 for us too. Less snow, but maybe Frizzle today.

    • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I miss Minneapolis. Cold and snow invigorates me.

    • ColdCountry

No snow here, but wind chill of -25. Sunday should end up in the 40s, after a Saturday of 5-6″ snow followed by freezing rain and then just rain.

    • Oh’behr

Greetings fellow Minneapolitan. I will freeze with you on Sunday when the air temperature is a -20 something. Yet it returns to 28 above next week.
      Yay !

      • bkmn

Oh’dear Oh’behr, but we moved away two years ago to western Washington state near Olympia, largely because I knew I could not handle those stalwart winters much longer. While we don’t miss the weather, we miss the people and the incredible food and the community, especially the friends we made at the neighborhood farmers markets. (And I really miss finding myself standing behind former mayor RT Rybak in his running shorts at the farmers markets when he was trying to find a place for Bogart Donuts to move into.)

  • mikeinrkfd

We go there after the “Afternoon Tea” at Scandals.

  • PickyPecker

I hope you’re having a most wonderful time, Joe! You certainly deserve it. Thank you, thank you, thank you….for all you do here! I wish I was near there to join you to raise a glass at the JMG meetup. XO

  • Acronym Jim

Nice picture, but what about the pool action? Or is it too NSFW for this family-friendly blog?

  • TuuxKabin

Do not despair, it’ll be 57-61 Sunday, with rain. You missed the brain freeze weather, yesterday and today. Good to know you got away for a week, someplace warm, hope the rest of your time is warm and real. And thanks for taking care of us while you were away.

  • Stogiebear

Reliably even weather. That must be nice!

The next two days here in Dallas: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3eda9248650cf245f164ce38780226d5defed953135c61e875a004bac7288e40.jpg

    • Todd20036

      That’s just messed up

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Its raining and 60 degrees in Los Angeles right now. We are having an arctic blast!

      • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I’m colder in Los Angeles than I ever was in Minneapolis. I can’t figure out why that happens.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

          Ur blood has gotten thin.

    • safari

      My joints ache for you.

    • Nic Peterson

64 in Honolulu right now. We won’t see 80 until next week. I had to put on a shirt.

      • David Walker

Poor baby. We’ve FINALLY had our “killer frost” and expect no substantial snow…wintry mix, but no snow. I don’t want to hear about “no such thing as climate change.”
Please don’t take this to mean that I love snow. I look forward to the first measurable snowfall. After that, @#$(^& #$(*&#$!!!1!

        • Nic Peterson

I will never forget the look on my Minnesota man’s face the night we saw 51 here. Shock and surprise, cussing that the house didn’t have heat. He went into the guest bedroom, pulled a down comforter out of the cedar chest and placed it on the bed. I asked him if he wanted to close any of the windows or if he would prefer to rub two sticks together as I jumped into bed. He chose the latter.

    • PickyPecker

20°F and starting to lighty snow here. Supposed to accumulate up to about 5″ between today and Sunday a.m. By Sunday night, we’re supposed to be -15°F.

  • BearEyes

(And yes, I’ve been noting the 10 degree wind chill back home with no small amount of satisfaction.)
    Bastardo!
bring some of the 80 degree with you – it was 5 when I woke up this morning

  • Butch

It’s minus 15 here in the Upper Peninsula with snow on the way. I don’t see how you’d choose Key West over this northern paradise.

    • Richard

In Green Bay here. Not too far from you. Big snow storm & cold temps here as well! We’ll have a white xmas

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Sunday at 7 pm ?? Kinda short notice, but if I leave now, pack up the pup and drive all ….

    Oh, never mind.

    • JW Swift

Oh, come on down. You know you want to.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        Oh, I do but…1645 miles 🙁

  • Lazycrockett

Crazy weather this weekend in the midwest. Cold to Warm to cold again in a 24 hour period.

  • Silver Badger

Have a fantastic holiday, Joe. You deserve the R&R. Be sure to get plenty of R!

  • another_steve

Somewhere in Manhattan, a cat weeps. A cat that Joe abandoned on his way to the Sodom and Gomorrah of the South.

    Alone. Neglected.

    Abandoned.

    • Todd Allis

      Was that cat you?

    • Silver Badger

Please. Ask the landlord. It’s been nonstop parties, shopping sprees and gourmet mice. Catnip for all and sundry!

      • another_steve

Lol. Yes, they like to party.

My house is currently infested with Camel Crickets and feline girlfriend here is having a ball.

I spend half my day picking up Camel Cricket legs scattered about the house.

        • JW Swift

Heh. The only time we ever had a cat when i was growing up was when the family was stationed overseas, and we got ourselves a cat to help take care of the mice and other vermin.

We had smooth wooden floors and the cat found that it was LOTS of fun to corner a gecko, then bat it back-and-forth between her front paws all the way across the floor. When they stopped moving, however, it became no fun for her, so she just left them wherever they laid.

    • Acronym Jim

…and plotting her sweet, sweet revenge.

  • Todd Allis

Ugh, 80? No thanks. I’m happy with the mild winter here, currently 50 F / 10 C in San Jose. Glad you had fun!

  • another_steve

    O/T, but nice:

The Maryland Zoo here has a very active African Penguin breeding program. Seven chicks have hatched so far this breeding season.

Justin Trudeau made the White House Christmas Card photo happen!
    https://www.instagram.com/p/BODl9xvj1s0/

    From the Instagram description:

That’s when the prime minister asked for a photo of he and Sophie with the Obamas. After a couple snaps, Trudeau suggested the photographer capture a shot of just the Obamas.

“I could have said, ‘Sir, we already did one before you arrived.’ But instead, I clicked off a few quick frames,” Souza wrote. “And lo and behold, it was this picture that Justin Trudeau asked me to take which everyone loved as the choice for the 2016 White House holiday card.”

    • Brian in Valdosta

Thanks for sharing the photo here. They are such a wonderful family.

      • Hue-Man

Especially when compared to the 2017 House of Horrors version!

        • Oh’behr

Will the Trumps even be in the same city? Will it be a NYC Presidential Christmas? Will they put the official White House tree on the penthouse roof?

  • Brian in Valdosta

In southern Georgia here, a mere 500 miles north of you, Joe, and I awoke to temps in the upper 30s. Funny how that goes.

    Enjoy!!

  • fuzzybits

-8 wind chill here last night. But I can still count on seeing some crazy fool in shorts at the store. Have fun Joe.
