PITTSBURGH: Mayor To Sign Ex-Gay Torture Ban Into Law After Unanimous Vote By City Council

The Associated Press reports:

The Pittsburgh City Council has unanimously voted to ban mental health professionals in the city from using on minors a therapy that attempts to change sexual orientation or how people identify their gender. City spokesman Timothy McNulty tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Mayor Bill Peduto plans to sign the legislation. Numerous medical and psychiatric groups oppose use of the β€œconversion therapy.” Councilman Dan Gilman says some residents advocated Tuesday’s council action due to concerns about Republican Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s views on the practice.

Ex-gay torture has also been banned by five states, Washington DC, and the cities of Miami Beach, Wilton Manors, West Palm Beach, Cincinnati, and Seattle.

Good for Pittsburgh! Welcome to the ranks of the enlightened!

But, remember this, everybody: In 2017, there’s a good chance Congress will pass (and Trump will sign) the First Amendment Defense Act, which will give Americans nationwide the right to ignore any law they don’t like for sincerely held religious or moral beliefs.

So whatever protections we now have as a result of federal regulations or executive orders, state laws, or local ordinances will vanish in the face of anybody who hates us. Think about that.

Elections have consequences. If you know someone who voted for Trump, tell them what you really think about their sin against humanity and decency.

    • Mordred LeFey

There was once a thing that tried the idea of “laws that I don’t like don’t affect me.”

It was called the Articles of Confederation.

    • MonochromeMouse

I agree, It’s important for ALL trump supporters, no matter their reasoning for voting for him, to face severe social consequences. Shun them, if you own a business fire them or make them quit, refuse to serve people wearing Trump shirts or hats, if you see a car with a Trump sticker on it key it if you think you can get away with it. If they voted for Trump they are not your friends or loved ones, they voted against you when they voted for him, never forget that.

      • Bj Lincoln

I have no problem with anything you stated except keying a car. I think that action drops one into the same category as Drumpf supporters.

        • MonochromeMouse

Liberals keeping the high ground is what got Trump elected, It’s time for us to turn into the bullies and force the fascists back into hiding where they belong.

  • bkmn

I hope this gives the religious haters a good case of butthurt.

    • safari

      ’tis the season

    • David Walker

According to a local news site, your hope has been granted. Really pissed off, disgusting “people” out there. “Nobody better try shoving that kind of anti-Christian stuff here.” I don’t know whether to roll my eyes or shake my head. At this point both actions hurt.

  • Moebym of the Resistance

Hm, Nevada isn’t one of those states. Maybe I’ll bring it up to the state assemblywoman I know. Now that we’ve got majorities in both chambers, such a bill should be able to pass.

    • Bluto

Absolutely! The squeaky dildo gets the grease.

OT but #EsteemedElectors is trending on Twitter. The whole fucking world is freaking the fuck out about the idea of a Trump Administration.

    • Ray Taylor

This AM it was mostly tRump supporters calling us names.

      • David Walker

I’m utterly shocked that such good ‘Murkans would do such a thing.

  • another_steve

Government should not allow people to make money peddling bogus science.

    That said, this:

I believe in the right of all people to engage in private consensual business with others — including business that involves bogus science — provided the person choosing to so engage is mentally competent and acting in a totally free and non-coerced manner.

    • safari

It’s the minor part that bothers me. There’s a lot that parents can do to screw up a non-consenting child. Conversion therapy is one of the big ones.

      • another_steve

If a child is non-consenting or incapable of giving consent, it should absolutely be illegal to subject her or him to conversion therapy — for profit or not for profit.

  • Martin

It’s good step, but until there is a National law, christianists will simply take their children elsewhere to be tortured. Even then, they can take them out of the U.S. to be tortured.

    • The_Wretched

I hope they have to take them out of country to be tortured. the cost and difficulty of doing so will reduce the number of victims. that said, they’ll probably just go underground.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Absolutely correct, there should be a national law. Further, the law should have teeth, that is to say that parent(s) and/or the “therapist” involved should face financial and/or prison time for the crime of torture. I’m happy to report there’s a push here in Canada for a national law to end torture and I’m hopeful it will pass.

I can think of few sights more pleasant than Ladybird Bachmann’s bloated head on a pikestaff…

An old friend of mine, a graduate of BYU, initially divorced and one-time member of my doorbell trade, is a psychiatrist. He’s older than me by ten years, but still has his private practice. One of his specialties was to “offer” reparative therapy for gay men. However, he never really believed in reparative therapy. Instead, he worked in confidence with his patients to help them overcome their guilt about being gay, learning acceptance and becoming as whole as possible. He’s treated quite a few people and, wonder of wonders, has never been caught. The only thing that bothers me about him is that 20 years ago he up and got married to the woman who had been the head of the clinic where he originally did his residency. Since then he’s been absent from my doorbell trade suitors. πŸ™

    • JCF

I just Googled “doorbell trade” (thank you, Urban Dictionary), and am still in mind-wrapping stage. Everything about this comment :-X

  • Robincho

Lucky Pittsburgh! They get Bill Peduto. All WE get is Bill Perdue…

  • Bj Lincoln

Now go after the religious nuts and quacks who are not affected by the law. Closing down ‘camps’ and clinics that fall under a religious blanket of BS.

  • andrew

Congrats to Pittsburgh City Council and the Mayor. Little by little this psychological form of child abuse is being abandoned.

  • Mike Knife

    Thank God

  • DonnaLee

I’ve liked the man ever since he married people at Pridefest downtown a month after PA legalized marriage equality.

  • KnownDonorDad

Still reeling that Pennsylvania went red. This is a spot of bright news.

  • JCF

Yay, Pittsburgh! [Esp considering what President-Elect that part of PA just gifted us with.]
