Tony Perkins Slams Rex Tillerson: He Might Be The Left’s Greatest Ally On Abortion And The LGBT Agenda

Via press release from hate group leader Tony Perkins:

Donald Trump put a lot of names in the pipeline to head the State Department, but few have fueled more controversy than ExxonMobil CEO and Chairman Rex Tillerson. The oil mogul, who’s spent his more than 40 years with the company, is one of the many names floated for the most-watched nomination of the new administration.

The Left, which doesn’t usually need a reason to oppose Trump’s choices, won’t find many here, since the ExxonMobil executive may be the greatest ally liberals have in the Cabinet for their abortion and LGBT agendas. That should be particularly alarming to conservatives, who’ve spent the last eight years watching the State Department lead the global parade for the slaughter of innocent unborn children and the intimidation of nations with natural views on marriage and sexuality.

No sooner had Hillary Clinton taken over the State Department in 2009 than the White House ordered her to use the agency as a club to beat other nations into submission on sensitive culture issues — a tradition that successor John Kerry has been all too eager to continue.

Now, after two terms of exporting radical social policy, Americans could finally see the light at the end of the Obama administration tunnel. To hear that Donald Trump may be appointing a man who not only led the charge to open the Boy Scouts to gay troop leaders but whose company directly gives to Planned Parenthood is upsetting at best. FRC knows Tillerson all too well, having worked for years to put the brakes on his reckless agenda for a scouting organization that was already dealing with staggering numbers of sexual abuse cases.

Unfortunately, the BSA, under Tillerson, ultimately caved to the pressure of the far-Left, irreparably splitting the Scouts and destroying a proud and honorable American tradition. Under his chairmanship, ExxonMobil’s score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate “Equality” Index has also skyrocketed to 87 percent. Still, Trump calls Rex a “world class player and dealmaker,” but if these are the kinds of deals Tillerson makes — sending dollars to an abortion business that’s just been referred for criminal prosecution and risking the well-being of young boys under his charge in an attempt to placate radical homosexual activists — then who knows what sort of “diplomacy” he would champion at DOS?

Meanwhile, it seems Tillerson will have plenty of GOP opposition over his ties to something (or rather, someone) else: Russian President Vladamir Putin. The pair’s friendship, which started in the 1990s, is raising plenty of eyebrows on Capitol Hill, where senators like Marco Rubio (R-Fl.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) weren’t shy about their objections.

“It’s a matter of concern to me that he has such a close personal relationship with Vladimir Putin,” McCain said Sunday, pointing out the “enormous deals” the two had done together. “That would color his approach to Vladimir Putin and the Russian threat.” Rubio echoed those concerns, tweeting “Being a ‘friend of Vladimir’ is not an attribute I am hoping for from #SecretaryOfState.”

Russia is just one hurdle Tillerson will face in his confirmation hearings with Senate Republicans. He’s also supported the carbon tax and, like President-elect Trump, has never held political or diplomatic office. For groups like FRC, who are tired of the State Department being used as a weapon in the global war on values, the problems run much deeper.

The agency already has an image problem after almost a decade of failing to respect the traditions and beliefs of other countries. The last thing Americans need is a leader who would continue to advocate (however subtly) the leftist social policy of the Obama years.

Three dimensional chess might be at play here.

Ahhh…the purity tests. The butthurt. Makes my day.

    • Gustav2

      Purity tests are very Dominionist.

      • Stogiebear

And the tests will constantly be updated because there’s always a Dominionist who’s purer that the last one…

        • rusty57

And at some point blood will be spilled to prove it.

    • TSS

That he thinks the Left has an “ally” in Tillerson because of his stance on abortion and LGBT issues is pretty funny, actually. Like, is that all we care about? While I support those positions, it’s more important to me – and I suspect a lot of Americans, not just liberal ones – that the SoS know what he or she is doing.

      • David Walker

Oh, he knows what he’s doing. They all know what they’re doing. The good of the country doesn’t enter into his thoughts or the thoughts of any of them. I read this morning (forget where…sorry) that the dumbing down of America has succeeded; we now enter the next phase, the Trumping down of America. Sounds about right.

If the taxes are so high that businesses cannot get capital to build things or noone can meet their needs due to the tax – that’s an issue. We aren’t at those economic positions though. The problem now is wealth and income inequality. Too much wealth in too few hands leads to economic stagnation.

Perkins really doesn’t know any average Americans, does he?

“The agency already has an image problem after almost a decade of failing to respect the traditions and beliefs of other countries.”

Bwahaha, you mean like when Christians force parents to choose between an education for their children and their own traditions and beliefs?

    • When the traditions and beliefs of other countries are barbaric, why should we respect them?

      • Wynter Marie Starr

So, you are okay with Christians stealing ingenious children from their parents? That happened in Australia and continues to happen to Native American children. I’m guessing you are taking about Muslims and certain other African belief systems. They are no better at demanding other people change ancient belief systems to suit their needs.

I don’t have much respect for any religion, but I do respect the rights of people to adhere to their own belief systems. Education, minus the religion would take care of the “barbaric” beliefs you are referring to.

    • Gerry Fisher

Yeah, inciting mob violence, looking the other way regarding “corrective rape,” and executing us for having sex are just such peachy traditions. You know, like baseball, mistletoe, and 4th of July fireworks. Quaint stuff.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

Gerry, I think you know I’m not talking about that stuff. Corrective rape and execution won’t change if children are given a Christian education. Christians have a hate on for the gay community and that won’t change anytime soon.

How many “preachers” have we heard demanding the death or incarceration of gays? Education minus any religious overtones is much better. The way it stands now is we have excuses for all the horrible things you mentioned, but they are now Christian excuses.

    • olandp

What about the tradition and belief in beheading Christians? Is Tonette now in favor of that tradition in Muslim countries?

      • Wynter Marie Starr

That’s a great question. I’m also sure we know the answer; beheading gays, okay, beheading Christians, not so much.

  • kevin vincent

Great job Trump you pissed off everybody lol the majority aren’t happy you nominated a man with blatant Russian connections and the Fundies aren’t happy you didn’t pick one of them but hey Tony it’s not like you shouldn’t have seen this coming what do you expect from a serial philander thrice married divoracee

  • Chris Baker

Well, if Perkins is upset, then I am happy. Nonetheless, ExxonMobil had to be dragged into giving benefits to the same sex partners of employees (although, one could argue, that was because of shareholder’s votes against giving those benefits for many years). I guess it’s somewhat good news that Tillerson was President of the Boy Scouts when he pushed for openly gay youths to be allowed to join. I think that most corporate CEOs have realized that diversity is an asset and are really pushing for acceptance of gays in the workplace and non-discrimination.

“[In 2012] “… Exxon posted its record profits … The Human Rights Campaign gave Exxon Mobil the lowest score on its Corporate Equality Index ever received by any corporation, a negative 25 out of 100; it was also the first company to ever receive a negative score.

Exxon erased previously established nondiscriminatory and partner benefit policies in companies it purchased, such as Mobil Oil Corporation and XTO Energy. It was the only company known to have ever permanently done so.” http://www.glaad.org/blog/exxonmobil-offer-benefits-partners-gay-and-bi-employees-2014

    • Guest

Am not convinced companies see the value of diversity. I am convinced they see the value of having a better image and that the leaders know a gay person. As Harvey milk asked, our coming out in numbers changed things.

      • Chris Baker

I think companies see diversity as a good recruiting point–a business issue. In competitive fields, they need to use whatever they can to attract and keep the best talent.

        • Guest

Fair point, but I would submit that may be in some fields and some geographical areas (read: blue states). I do not think it is as broad as your statements read. Companies have the rightful goal to make money. And that proves the need for strong regulations, a check and balance. Companies would just as soon toss diversity if it meant more money.

Mark my words. There will come a point where these diversity groups within a company will be cut for the ever demand of more profit. Sad, but true.

      >>I guess it’s somewhat good news that Tillerson was President of the Boy Scouts when he pushed for openly gay youths to be allowed to join.<<

I don't think that's true, and I certainly wouldn't take Tony Perkins' word for it. Tillerson's term with BSA expired in 2012. The resolution to partially lift the ban was passed in May of 2013 and took effect in 2014. The ban was not completely lifted until 2015 under the helm of Robert Gates.

Tillerson is also reputedly the last holdout for antigay discrimination on the Exxon Mobil board.

  • Treant

Well, at least the ridiculous right doesn’t a hundred percent approve. That’s something, I guess.

    • Todd20036

No, it just means Trump will need a scapegoat to keep them in line.
LBGT would be a perfect fit for that, no?

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

“Now, after two terms of exporting radical social policy” Yeah, like the radical idea that all people have equal rights.

I would think PerKKKins would be more butthurt about Exxon’s tendency to not pay any Federal Income Tax. That means less money for fundies to siphon off with school vouchers or faith-based social programs.

  • BobSF_94117

He was at the helm when the BSA changed its rules. He did not want to include gay scouts, he just did what he thought was best for the BSA. He may have been pragmatic with his decision, but he’s certainly not a supporter of gay people and gay rights.

I doubt Perkins is really upset. This is just drama he’s been asked to produce so the choice appears more balanced. It’s not.

    • Mike in Texas

The same happened with the Exxon Mobil antigay policy. He was the strongest supporter of antigay discrimination on the board.

      • Gerry Fisher

        I was wondering about this

        • Mike in Texas

Here’s an old Advocate article with a lot of detail (including the expiration of Tillerson’s BSA term).

It also says “”The majority of Exxon’s board members lead companies with Corporate Equality Index ratings of 100. In fact, every current board member who has served as a CEO or on the board of a company with an official CEI ranking has been at a company with a minimum rating of 90, most 100. The only exception is Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson.”

          http://www.advocate.com/print-issue/current-issue/2013/09/03/whats-wrong-exxon?pg=full

      • Mike in Texas

Just did some checking. Tillerson’s term with the BSA expired a year before they made the partial change in their anti-gay policy.

        • TrollopeReader

it was Bob Gates (former defense sec’y) who was head of the bsa at the time, i think.

          • Mike in Texas

I think that’s right. I just had to tweet Morning Joe because they are trying to credit the change in policy to Tillerson. They must get their information from Tony Perkins.

            2010–2012 Rex W. Tillerson
            2012–2014 Wayne M. Perry
            2014–2016 Robert Gates

        • RemusL

Yeah, I was scratching my head about Perkins objection to Tillerson. I just didn’t remember his name in conjunction with anything to do with any gay-friendly policy changes in the Boy Scouts. Colour me not surprised that Perkins is lying yet again.

    • Gustav2

Perkins seems to forget the large institutional stockholders changed Exxon and parents opting out of the 1950’s changed the BSA.

      • David Walker

The Lovely Rev. Dr. Mr. PerKKKins is, I suspect, one of those who forgets nothing and forgives no one. He does, however, omit, especially in “newsletters” and/or money begs.

  • BobSF_94117

He could be the long-lost fifth member* of the Village People, and I’d still oppose him.

    * oil rigger

  • TrollopeReader

wow. i could see the froth spewing (spittling?) from his mouth. ewwwww.

  • Gerry Fisher

To Tonette, flying a rainbow flag at an embassy, or objecting toy our impisonment and execution equals”using a club.”

  • Tom G

Trump will succeed at pissing off everybody as he picks his cabinet. I’m surprised Tony needs more than $100K to roll over and take it in the ass.

  • we’re still here

The hate has to be pure and unfiltered for Puke-ins. He just hasn’t got an off-white hood for the subtle kind.

    • David Walker

Subtlety is lost on his sheep. It would confuse the fuck out of them, and that would affect his income.

  • Mark

gawd dammit, tonetta! Tillerson sounds like a corporate russian pig – but if he pisses you off that much….i just might have to like him.

    • Silver Badger

I believe the term Mr. Perkins would use is “sucker”.

  • OdieDenCO

wow, donny got a 2fer. tillerson pisses off the left and the right

    • Chucktech

Something tells me there’ll be a lot of that in the next 2 to 4 years…

  • TimJ

Got to give Tony credit for having principles. It isn’t that Tillerson is a friend of Putin’s and stands to profit enormously from the lifting of sanctions. Nope, Tony is focused on gay Scout Leaders and contributions to Planned Parenthood….

  • Wesinoregon

It’s OK Toni, you can still pretend to be Secretary of what you are good at… bigotry and hate.

    • Silver Badger

So many qualified candidates for Secretary of Hate. David Duke, Pat McCrory, Tony Perkins, Brian Brown. What to do, what to do!? Poor trump.

  • mikeinrkfd

She is never happy is she?

  • boatboy_srq

They’re really not happy with anyone Left of Attila the Hun, are they?

  • Jacob

It terrifies me when this man seems to actually have principles, however misguided. I like the grifter version better.

  • boatboy_srq

This tantrum is all about ExxonMobil finally recognizing that the they have LGBT employees, isn’t it? You’d have thought that the two decades or so where the merged company quashed Mobil’s old domestic partner benefits program would have been enough.

  • rusty57

The central conundrum of the right, the pure corporatists and the pure christianists will come into increasing conflict as one side sees the other getting what it wants and is no longer content with lip service and the occasional crumb off the table.
I can’t imagine what happy resolution there might be between these two opposing forces, especially for those of us who are neither.

    • Chucktech

I agree and I don’t think there will be any happy resolution between the two, christianists will lose, bigly. Another silver lining, IMO.

  • I an sick of hearing nothing but abortion/anti-LGBT, abortion/anit-LGBT, abortion/anti-LGBT from the right. How can any group only have two things in the entire lexicon of social issues? They are morally bankrupt to not care for the sick, the hungry and the homeless.

    • KnownDonorDad

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

You know, as a gay man who’s married to, arguably, one of the kinkiest power bottoms ever to walk the Earth, I have to say that even we don’t think of gays or gay sex as much as this mendacious misanthrope does. Seriously, that’s saying something.

  • boobert

It’s okay that he want’s to use the position for oil profits , but the gay thing is the deal breaker ! What a moron !

  • MisterShoebox

Hmm…I will only say this: If you have a bigoted asshole calling you out, you must be doing SOMETHING right. Granted, I haven’t done all my research, but still…

    • KnownDonorDad

I feel the same way. Will be watching with interest.

  • KnownDonorDad

Oh please, Perkins looks at Russia as a model for how to suppress LGBT people. Now ties to Russia bother him? I’m surprised he didn’t slam Tillerson for believing in climate change, too.

  • Bj Lincoln

Excuse me but Exon Mobile refuses to include LGBT people in ANYTHING. In fact, they remove all LGBT benefits and protections from companies they consume who have them. No matter what or who sues, they refuse to budge. They are the only company to get a negative score from HRC including this year. I do not have a clue where Tony got his info but then he turns everything around to meet his needs anyway.
