Clinton Campaign Backs Call For Electors To Get Intelligence Briefing On Russia’s Election Intervention

Politico reports:

Hillary Clinton’s top political adviser John Podesta said the campaign is supporting an effort by members of the Electoral College to request an intelligence briefing on foreign intervention in the presidential election.

“The bipartisan electors’ letter raises very grave issues involving our national security,” Podesta said in a statement Monday. “Electors have a solemn responsibility under the Constitution and we support their efforts to have their questions addressed.”

“Each day that month, our campaign decried the interference of Russia in our campaign and its evident goal of hurting our campaign to aid Donald Trump,” he said. “Despite our protestations, this matter did not receive the attention it deserved by the media in the campaign. We now know that the CIA has determined Russia’s interference in our elections was for the purpose of electing Donald Trump. This should distress every American.”

  • EweTaw

I’m distressed . . and a little shabby chic, too.

  • PickyPecker
    • MonochromeMouse

The people should refer to Hillary as “President Clinton”, that would really piss off Resident Trump.

  • AW

As an American I’m very distressed at the interference of both the FBI and Russia in stealing this election from the American people. We don’t have a president elect who represents the US.

    • MonochromeMouse

Even without the hacking and propaganda, Trump wouldn’t represent the people of the United States since he lost by over 2 million votes, the largest difference in popular votes vs electoral votes in US history.

    • Moebym, Resistance Pilot

But you see, it’s all Hillary’s and the DNC’s fault. She had too much baggage, she didn’t do enough to get people to like her, and the DNC never should have shoved her down our throats. The Republicans are going to do what they’re going to do, and it can’t be helped, so Hillary and the DNC were singlehandedly responsible for winning the election.

      (/s for the snark-impaired)

      • AW

I really hate that line of reasoning. She’s the popular choice! That gets left out all the time from the narrative.

        • dr morbius

Alas, that is not constitutionally relevant.

        • Kate

          “She’s the popular choice!”

Of people who bothered to vote, which also doesn’t matter. States elect the president, not individuals.

The states choose to have a popular vote, and he won representation in those states.

Many countries (like Canada) don’t have direct election of the highest office, and it’s not disenfranchisement. Very few people voted for or against Trudeau – he won that position based on the party MPs winning. It’s an indirect election, just like the US.

          • The_Wretched

Yes, I agree that it’s horrible people vote or that in a democracy, the popular candidate should win. I mean, why have the vote at all?

I also notice that the republicans are being sore winners and trying to keep attention on Clinton. Could that be because the Trump news continues to be utter bs and a disaster for the country?

          • Kate

“Why have the vote at all?”

Because the states (who elect the president) want to know who their citizens support. They use that to inform their choice of electors.

Every vote counts. Equally. Every Californian has an equal say in who California elects.

We have a representative republic, and we have states rights.

“Could that be because the Trump news continues to be utter bs and a disaster”

Disaster? It’s a conservative dream team. Paul Ryan is giddy, now that he’s realized just how much Trump is willing to play “lets make a deal”. Offer Trump tariffs, immigration, and a wall, and they can pretty much pass the entire Republican platform in four years. They don’t see it as a disaster at all.

They are focusing on Clinton right now, because the electoral college defections are a distraction, and they dislike Hillary. She’s made herself an easy target, and it will likely stop as soon as Trump takes office.

          • The_Wretched

Hey! Look at you not noting that a vote in California is 1/8th as consequential as one in Montana!

          • The_Wretched

            “and it will likely stop”

No it won’t. It’s been continuous and Chaeffets promised to keep it going too.

And if it’s not Hillary, it’ll be another demonization of someone else, anything but actually dealing with real issues and policy.

          • The_Wretched

“They use that to inform their choice of electors.”
            Why do you hate democracy?

          • Kate

Because I value states rights, and minorities. Tyranny of the majority is still tyranny.

My grandmother had her father deported in the “Mexican Repatriation”. Despite being in the US legally, they rounded up workers for the “crime” of being brown, because the majority wanted it. He was shipped down to Mexico, and she was put into hiding.

Direct democracies are dangerous. Any gay person should understand that. We weren’t always liked by the majority of society.

          • The_Wretched

Since the majority is a tyranny, the minority who hates LGBTQ people should win? Loopy mental gymnastics achievement unlocked!

Do you have any idea who Pence is or how gay people fare under dominionism? Every day here is another Trump appointee or nominee and nearly each has decades long histories of hurting gay people. So take your dangerous and shove it. You voted for the bigots who want conversion therapy forced on us.

          • stevenj

“Because I value states rights, and minorities.”

You must be a gay Republican. They are often blind, deaf and dumb.

          • The Return of Traxley

I quite honestly believe she’s a paid Russian troll pretending to be an American lesbian who supposedly had a horrific childhood at the hands of bigoted parents, but who also happily voted for Trump, and only appears on this blog to post in his defense. I’ve checked her profile and I ran through her comment history. She created her profile after the election and only comments to seed conflict.

If someone is good at Google Reverse Image Search, I’m reasonably certain that her avatar has been stolen from someplace else.

          • The_Wretched

just use images.google.com and click the camera icon for image search. Thumbnails don’t always work though. I don’t usually rebut this troll but felt like it today. When I bothered to think about its posts, they are clearly trolling / propaganda. Normal humans can’t think in such convoluted ways.

          • David Kerlick

Then they can criminalize dissent and arrest their political opponents and send them to Guantanamo, as with the rest of the Hitler playbook that Trump is following to a T. Oh, watch for a trumped up “terrorist attack” like the burning of the Reichstag as an excuse to end the Republic and install Trump as dictator.

          • Kate

It’s funny – the right was saying the same exact things about Obama.

Neither’s going to happen. If Bush didn’t do it after an actual attack that killed thousands on US soil, it won’t happen under Trump either.

          • JT

What’s different is that Drumpf is a psychopath and a traitor.

          • David Kerlick

False equivalence, I am afraid. Trump has narcissistic personality disorder, shared with those other fascists, and has no concern for the Constitution.

          • Exatron

No, votes in presidential elections literally don’t count equally. A vote in California is worth less than a vote in Wyoming, and your vote is completely worthless if you’re a Republican in New York or a Democrat in Texas.

      • Thanks for that last line – because of Poe’s law and the fact that there are way too many people out there who really feel that way, it might not have been apparent.

        • fuow

Tell me about it – I’ve had the clueless, even here, question my party membership since the election.
          Sheesh.

      • Kate

So, once again, Hillary Clinton wants to give classified information to people not cleared for it.

        • The_Wretched

Or it’s information that they need to fill out their Constitutional mandate to protect the nation from a failed electoral process. A vital emergency break on a dictator taking power.

        • stevenj

          Please stay in Canada.

More likely somewhere on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea.

          • Kate

Why? I voted for Trump, now I get to enjoy the consequences.

          • Adam Schmidt

And blocked. You’re not here for the discussion, you’re just here to troll and I’m not interested in watching it.

is it possible for 538 people to be screened for security clearances in just a week?

And this is just NOW dawning on him, after the past year and a half of “Jyna this” and “Jyna that”??

Can’t fault him for that. Even Trump’s shitty campaign hats were made in China. He also promised to build a wall, lock-up Hillary, yadda, yadda, yadda. I’m sure no one in the GOP expected this con-man to follow through on any of his promises.

    • ErikDC

McConnell looks like he was just told something by the CIA that has shaken him to his core.

Notice how he’s not making eye contact there?

Don’t look now, but it sounds like China’s threatened the future of Sen. McConnell’s wife’s (Elaine Chao’s) shipping company’s ability to do business with them.

McConnell is doing PR control and is being dishonest. He’s been blocking doing something about the hacking or getting the message out.

      YES ! It’s been on Tillerson’s wiki page for a while …
I posted this yesterday , nice to see it get the attention it deserves ….
This MUST make the rounds of major news

” In 2011, on behalf of ExxonMobil, Rex Tillerson signed an agreement with Russia for drilling in the Arctic that could be valued up to $300 billion. Although the company began drilling in the Kara Sea in summer 2014, sanctions against Russia during the Ukranian crisis brought the project to a halt in September of that year

I’m guessing Trump will give putting an end to these
      sanctions a VERY high priority . “

    • The_Wretched

It’s corrupt to have a US Sec. of State who will personally profit from removing sanctions on Russia. we need to use the ‘corrupt’ label every time we see a basis for it and recite it on FB and social media everywhere.

Trump’s latest outrageous! Tweet always took importance over anything else with the media. If a new damning story came out about Trump, he’d Tweet something outrageous! and *poof*, no more damning story.

    • AW

This is the thing! When when damning story broke about him they pounced on it and stopped covering all the other damning stories! All the while reporting negatively on Popular Choice President Hillary Clinton’s email server. The American public heard more about her emails than they heard of any one story on Trump, that’s a real problem.

      • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

You’re right. They hammered away at Hillary and her emails for so long and so steadily that all it took was for Comey to remind people of it ten days before the election to shake up the polls.

  • The_Wretched

good but not enough. the clinton team needs every donor and surrogate and republican they got on board during the campaign to pigeon hole and pressure the EC members to do the right thing and go with the popular vote.

        • ultragreen
