NEW YORK CITY: Lady Gaga Makes Visit To Ali Forney Center With A Carload Of Holiday Presents [VIDEO]

The Today Show reports:

For Lady Gaga, kindness has been the key to finding peace in her own life. “I’ve been searching for ways to help myself. And I found that kindness is the best way,” she told TODAY recently while on a visit to Harlem’s Ali Forney Center, a shelter for homeless LGBT youth, to surprise the teens living there.

She’s a superstar singer and passionate activist, but when Lady Gaga meets a trauma survivor, she’s just one of them. “I told the kids today, ‘I suffer from PTSD.’ I’ve never told anyone that before. So here we are. But the kindness that’s shown to me by doctors as well as my family, and my friends, it’s really saved my life.”

According to the Ali Forney Center, 80 percent of the youth there are kicked out of their homes because of their sexuality. The rest run away because of neglect, abuse, rejection, or a combination of those.

“How’s it going? I’m Lady Gaga; it’s nice to see you,” she said to the shocked crowd. Needless to say, the introduction was not necessary. One teen told her, “When family was, like, kind of, like, pushing me away because I’m gay, all I had is you and ‘Born This Way’ album on repeat.”

  • wait wait….*this* seems like the “christian” thing to do.
no. fuck that. this is the *moral* thing to do.

    • Oikos

Christains: “Iif they didn’t choose to be gay, they wouldn’t be homeless.”

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

The truly tragic part is, they really, truly believe that.

        • David Walker

Have you read “Prayers for Bobby”? Read, not seen. The movie is OK (Lifetime?), but the book is a sad story of a xn mom’s treatment of her son, and when he commits suicide, she goes through a transformation that caused an uproar amongst The Truly Religious at the time. I think that’s how I heard about. It’s a good read, but have the tissues handy.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yup, read the book, saw the film. Unfortunately, Bobby’s mom and his family are still the exception when it comes to Christians.

          • JCF

…the exception when it comes to Fundy Christians. Not so among Episcopalians (or in Canada, Anglicans).

    • MBear

I see the problem there. You still think ‘christian’ should be good or moral.

You haven’t read their holy book, I take it.
There is nothing good or moral about christians, christianity, etc. What they think they are emulating when they do something nice is being empathetic and human, but I’d suggest that’s rare.

The nicest thing you can say about a person IMO is that they’re *not* christian. 🙂

    • TheManicMechanic

Please don’t associate good, moral people with sham religions. It’s the innate goodness in (most) people that leads to the wonderful things they do, not the artificial constructs they wrap themselves in. People don’t need religion as a reason for their good deeds. On the contrary, people will always use religion as an excuse for the bad shit they do on a regular basis.

      • i totally agree with you. i’m a good person because i’m a good person. not because some antiquated book says i should be.

  • HZ81

I hear she gave them a $2 discount on Joanne, too. 🙂

(Yes, I am a cunters, and only kidding. This is wonderful. Thanks, LG.)

  • Bill_Perdue

    Good for her.

  • greenmanTN

I really don’t know much about Lady Gaga, but this seemed like a very nice thing to do and the reaction of those kids was both beautiful and heartbreaking.

And she’s right, many have been through very traumatic experiences.

    • Todd20036

She’s a singer from the “Madonna School of Music and Controversy”.
But she also walks the walk. She’s extremely pro-LBGT, and sends out the message that gays are born gay. They don’t choose to be.

      • greenmanTN

I’ve heard about her but have heard very little of her music, maybe a few things she did with Tony Bennett. Girl can sing. But I know she has been very pro-gay and she does seem to be walking the walk.

Cyndi Lauper is my fave in the singer/activist category though. (And I’ve kind of wanted to drown Madonna in a bathtub since the first time I heard her. I know that’s gay blasphemy but I never liked her.)

Cyndi on the Tonight Show singing two songs and utterly charming Johnny Carson, who is clearly baffled by her.

        • David Walker

Me, either, although I was really happily surprised “Born This Way” became the anthem it did. But I’ve been away from popular music since around the time Ms. Lauper took it by storm.

      • FancyThat

The more I see her work on behalf of assault victims and LGBT youth, the Pulse victims, and persons in need, the more I appreciate all that she does — and yes, she DOES walk the walk! She’s giving back to her ‘little monsters’ and fans and giving me a million reasons, about a million reasons, to like her even more!

  • Cousin Bleh

Madonna, who just spent Thanksgiving at an Ali Forney center in Brooklyn, calls this “reductive.”

    • Natty Enquirer

      Im-material girl.

      • TuuxKabin

    • Butch

Sorry to be thick – as in, Madonna is criticizing this action? I’m definitely not Gaga’s biggest fan but WTF? She did a good thing.

  • mikeinrkfd

Yay! That is a wonderful thing!

  • TuuxKabin

Click on the Recommended heart. Thank you Joe, thank you Lady Gaga and Mother Gaga. A friend gave me these four words to use, since the mal-lection, “concentrate on doing good.” Not that difficult to do.

  • Duh-David

I just checked Amazon Smile to send the kids some warm shirts and granola bars, but the Ali Forney Center wishlist is now blank. Was this a project that wasn’t working out for them? I liked having Amazon send specific things they needed, rather than an impersonal check (although I do that too.)

    • Lakeview Bob

      You are a good guy.

      • TuuxKabin

Lotsa good guys and dolls here! You included.

      • Duh-David

        Thank you.

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Please make sure that everyone knows that they can have money donated to them just by signing up (costs nothing) and entering thru the SMILE portal which you can bookmark.

    • djcoastermark

I like that when I use Smile when I purchase something, it tells me how much of each purchase is going to Ali Forney Center. It’s not much that I buy ,but every little bit helps.

    • Belthazar

It was working yesterday (Monday) when I sent gifts from their registry. I got a notice from Amazon that the gifts have shipped.

  • TuuxKabin
    • Butch

I copied that same image yesterday.

      • TuuxKabin

HI Butch. I just found it when I searched for “blowing kisses” meme. Great meme!

        • Butch

There’s a “furbutts” feature that appears every day on Daily Kos, around 12:50 p.m. (Central). I got it there.

          • TuuxKabin

12:49 eastern, I’ve set the alarm. Thanks!

  • Natty Enquirer

    Nice going Steph!

  • Ian

My heart breaks for these kids. I’m thankful everyday I get to come to work in my little corner of local government to make sure the programs that are open, stay open.

    • Tor

Good luck in the next four years. Keep up the good work.

  • Lakeview Bob

My admiration and respect for the LADY grows everyday. She is an amazing person.

    • MonochromeMouse

Gaga is one of the few modern pop stars that clearly isn’t just in it for the money and attention.

  • james1200

Unpopular opinion: It would be nice to do this when you don’t have an album and several singles out, all of which are dying a horrible death on the charts and you desperately need to not have two flops in a row. Yes, I’m in a bitchy mood today but still…

    • Oikos

Still more than Tony PerKKKins would do for these kids.

      • james1200

        Fair enough.

    • Natty Enquirer

I thought “win-win” was supposed to be a good thing.

  • Todd20036

    Our side helps others.

    The other side helps themselves.

I still wonder how those shoes work without destroying your feet, ankles and back.

      • David Walker

        Yea verily.

      • JCF

Is that a recent pic? I thought she given those things up (since she hurt her hip a couple of years back).

  • Goodboy

Wow. Then you contrast this to that POS Reverend Manning. Love vs hate. Are they in the church already?

    • Dean

wait wait wait. What did I miss? Did the Ali Forney Center win the bid? Do they get to move in when the shady grifting Manning exhausts everything in his bag of tricks?

  • Goodboy

Wow. Then you contrast this to that POS Reverend Manning. Are they in the church already?

    • TuuxKabin

Not yet. Manning keeps getting the hearings pushed further along. IIRC the next one is February some time.

  • Derrick Johns

The sound of the speakers on this computer here at work are shot. So, I couldn’t hear the sound on this video report. But I started crying. To see the expressions on those young LGBTQ folk’s faces when they saw Lady Gaga appear at the Forney Center was emotionally uplifting. It was beautiful.
I didn’t become a fan of Lady Gaga until she appeared on television with the great Tony Bennett. I said, “this girl knows her music.” Well, now I’m a fan. But I’m not going to her concerts when she comes to Philly.. I can’t afford the ticket .

  • TheManicMechanic

    One of our best allies.

    • JCF

Gaga ID’s as Bi, so she’s one of us.

  • Miguel

Some people do nice, generous things when the cameras aren’t around. Some people do nice things without announcing their own irrelevant “issues”.

  • djcoastermark

Just sent a few things to the center that is on their wish list through Amazon Smile. ( cold weather stuff ) It’s not any wow type thing but felt good to help out a bit.

  • Clive Johnson

From early on I thought Gaga was a good soul, and this just confirms it.

  • Kevin Perez

    She’s a Ga-Ga-Goddess.

  • ikahana

Those kids must have felt so loved. What a beautiful thing to do.

    • TuuxKabin

It shows on their faces! It’s a wonderful thing she did. And I’m glad we’re part of the community that supports the Ali Forney Center!

  • The Professor

I bet she also donates a boatload of money and doesn’t say a word about it.

  • ByronK

    Tears watching…

    • Steve Teeter

      Me too.

  • Skip Intro

She gave ’em loads of stuff and they were so absolutely thrilled and star-struck. You’ll notice that she brought scads of makeup. Now, to the casual observer that would seem trivial but we’re talking gay and trans kids here and that’s a huge image boost. It’s cool that Gaga is attuned to that.
I grew up on punk and alternative rock and I’ve tried to dismiss M’lady’s pop career but I simply can’t, dammit. She has too much talent … and heart.

  • David Walker

I like that NBC covered this on one of their most-watched shows. It both would and wouldn’t surprise me if a local station, like New York’s NBC affiliate, did something on this. And I’m sure a large part of it had to do with the Lady’s popularity and fame. Plus they got the PTSD story. But Ali Forney was brought to national attention. And about fucking time.
