PENNSYLVANIA: Jill Stein Withdraws Recount Effort

The New York Times reports:

Pennsylvania will apparently not have a statewide recount of its votes, removing the last long-shot hope by opponents of Donald J. Trump that a review of the ballots could overturn his election as president.

In a filing on Saturday, a lawyer for Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate, who began the recount bids in Pennsylvania — as well as in Michigan and Wisconsin — said “petitioners are regular citizens of ordinary means” and could not afford a $1 million bond payment that was ordered by Pennsylvania courts.

Lawyers for Pennsylvania Republicans and Mr. Trump had asked a judge on Thursday to dismiss Ms. Stein’s request, saying she had not identified any fraud or illegal activity during the Nov. 8 election.

Lawrence J. Tabas, the general counsel of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, said on Saturday that the withdrawal served as “recognition” that the Stein-led effort was “completely without merit,” and that the decision to drop the case “assures that President-elect Trump will be declared the winner by the Electoral College,” which meets on Dec. 19.

In a statement, Ms. Stein left open the possibility that she had further plans in Pennsylvania, and promised a “major announcement” on Monday morning. She criticized the $1 million bond needed to proceed with a recount.

“This is yet another sign that Pennsylvania’s antiquated election law is stacked against voters,” Ms. Stein said. “We will pursue every available remedy to ensure Pennsylvanians can trust what happened in this election.”

  • Lazycrockett

There is a lot of blow back bout this on twitter it seems she has other options which she is gonna announce during a Monday Press Conference.

    • perversatile

The hillbilly in my head sez, ”Announcing ain’t the same as doing.”

    • TimCA

Hope her grand announcement isn’t about her upcoming 2020 presidential bid to be funded in part with millions collected using this bait and switch scheme.

  • Dramphooey

So, what happened to all that money you raised?

    • SoCalGal20

The Elections board in WI bumped up the recount fee to $3.1M. I don’t know what the fee in MI is. Or what they projected the fee in PA to be.

      • Piet

I thought she’d raised something in the neighborhood of 7.5 million. Was that not correct?

        • SoCalGal20

As I said, I don’t know what the deal with the PA money is but WI is already costing $3.9M (the BoE keeps raising the amount), I have no idea what MI is going to cost but probably more than the $1M they already put up if WI is any indication. But right now they’re just trying to get a full state recount in PA.

          • Piet

Ah. Thanks. I wasn’t aware WI had raised its fee.

PA’s voting laws are sucky. but i also read that the Green Party might embark on a county-by-county recount, and i think if they can close the margin to .5% it would trigger an automatic statewide recount

    • The Green Party said in the tiny word disclaimer before clicking to donate, that the money donated may go to other things besides the voter recounts in WI, MI and PA..

      • Lazycrockett

and it was pointed out by various media sites. She is not trying to grift on this issue.

        • David in Palm Springs

Then why isn’t she paying for the recount if she’s not grifting?

          • Lazycrockett

Because if the margin of error gets to 5, which is likely an auto recount happens, seem she’s trying to save some money. Meanwhile county recounts are continuing.

          • Xiao Ai

Then she’s not doing it for the greater good even. Money should not be a barrier to the truth.

        • Xiao Ai

Yes, she is. She may be trying to do it for what she believes is the greater good but, she is definitely grifting.

        • Dr. Jill Stein is grifting. She is selling false hope and trying to bring back some progressive so the Greens can do better than >1% of the vote.. I always felt her antics about the recounts were disingenuous.

Lawrence O’Donnell last week had a segment. He showed that Hillary lost in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan and North Carolina by less than the total votes for Stein. Now, not every vote for her would have gone to Hillary, but most would have. He showed had Hillary won 3 of those states, she would have won.

Rachel Maddie proved some years ago the right’s lie that Ross Perot only took from daddy war criminal Bush, , when Perot took rather evenly from Bush and Bill Clinton.

For this time, it is clear jill gave Trump the win.

Jill is just like Trump, in it for her and only her.

That written, if the USA wants to not be thought of as a banana republic, then you would think everyone would demand paper proof and a recount, always if it is close.

      • Gerry Fisher

On the one hand, you can tabulate the numbers this way; there’s a truth to your statements. On the other hand, there’s more to the truth than you’re saying. Clinton scored slightly lower than Obama in almost every demographic. Clinton’s a wooden campaigner (a “technocrat”). Sexism. A flawed campaign strategy to focus only on demographic groups and not on traditional Democratic strongholds. A failed GOTV effort (Obama had 700+ campaign offices in either ’08 or ’12, and Clinton had under 500). Voter suppression. Avoiding any one of these problems might have gotten her a few more states. It was “a perfect storm,” or, at the risk of mixing metaphors, “death by paper cuts.”

        • Stuart Wyman-Cahall

“Obama had 700+ campaign offices in either ’08 or ’12, and Clinton had under 500”. So? Trump had less than a handful. This election was a game changer in the sense that conventional politics as we’ve always known it will never be the same again. Never.

    • Guest

Let us be clear. For Wis there are 3 counties that we know about that have turned in more votes for Trump than they have turned in total ballots cast. All three are righty strongholds. So no single ballot had a vote for Hillary? There are legitimate concerns.

There are reasons the right is fighting in all of these states.

In mich, there are similar concerns.

In Penn they have concerns about under reporting in Philly.

Also hope is that in the north Carolina recount, maybe, doubtful, but maybe Hillary can get closer. At least that could cause a few righties to pause. Or they could do what the left never does and go for all fast.

There has never been a Trump as president-elect.

      • andrew

It’s over folks. We progressives, liberals and centrists lost. Over the next two years we will all have to do whatever we can, to see that in 2018 the progressive forces make a comeback. One of the big things that must be done is to convince working class white folks, in particular, that their interests are our interests. This is doable. The Democratic party does fight for things that benefit the white working class. It just seems that too often we haven’t advertised how important a part they are to our progressive coalition, so that they have often felt like the forgotten group.

        • BudClark

If Republicans do even HALF of what they’re threatening to do in the next two years, it shouldn’t be THAT hard to get poor people to vote for Democratic candidates. Of course, they were warned BEFORE the election, and chose to ignore the warning. So … as usual, when they’re sick and homeless and hungry, it will be up to the people in the “bleeding heart liberal” blue states to bail them out yet AGAIN. I might SAY I want to see them suffer, but as a socialist High-Church Episcopalian, I could NEVER allow that, at least not on a one-to-one basis, even with my VERY limited resources.

        • Helen Damnation 🍑™

Darling andrew I must respectfully disagree, but only a little. I refuse to play the guilty one, just because half of the fucking population can’t tell truth from dogged, damned lies. You cannot teach politics to the people who voted for Donald Fucking Trump. I hold the media responsible, for allowing Trump to go completely fucking unchallenged for almost two years.

Forget optics and narratives and let’s get to the truth. Denying Clinton the presidency was a hard bitch slap, coming from Obama and Clinton haters and the folks who believe them. See one of the best, David “he said that he wanted to be whatever Ronald Reagan was” Bossie, at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bossie

      Never before…

      …does not mean never could.

      • andrew

Yeah it does. In reality 71,000 is too big a gap to surmount. Maybe the 11,000 margin in Michigan and possibly the 22,000 vote margin in Wisconsin were possible, but there is no way that the 71,000 vote margin in Pa could be overturned.

        • Guest

And how much did that stupid union having a strike during early voting harm when the city makes up for the rural areas going right? That union was greedy and should be ashamed for it. Why not 300,000?

So, they misquoted Stein or what? One thing I know for a fact that contributed to this election disaster was fake goddamned news so I don’t think I’m willing to extend Bill Palmer, whoever the fuck that is, much credit.

The Michigan recount is where the Trump people started to really freak out. They were pretty quiet when Wisconsin and Pennsylvania started to go forward, but when Michigan started to come up they suddenly got really, really noisy about fighting the recounts. That’s where the proof is. We just have to find it.

    • safari

Never underestimate blue collar dem hatred of the Clintons.

      • TrollopeReader

which shouldn’t be “news” to the Clinton folks …

      • Ninja0980

NAFTA was an anchor around Hillary’s neck that she was never able to cut off.

  • BoGardiner

Here’s the transcript of what Green Party official stated in an announcement at the press conference for the filing of the first recount petition, in Wisconsin, addressing unspent recount funds:

Martin: Our commitment as the Green Party is that if we didn’t get on the ballot, let’s say in Michigan, and there was money raised, that that money will go to campaign schools next year, to groom local candidates. The last time we did that in Wisconsin I think was about 2000, 20003, the next year we had 37 elected officials in the state of Wisconsin. As a national party our commitment is not only to run at the national level, but more importantly, to build at the local level and build political careers, and so that’s where these dollars and these excess dollars will go in the future for next year.

You know, this differentiation here, one of the things that really important, we know that our US government monitors elections all around the world, and by their standards, looking at this kind of math, our election in the US would have been called a failed and unfair and illicit election. Our US government would judge that if this happened in another country, and that’s all the more reason why we’re standing up and going forward with this.

So this is not a grandstand, I’m just letting you know who we are, what we stand for, and how we’re moving forward to build a movement. It wasn’t about this election. It’s about building a movement with integrity for the American public, and so we’re going to proceed in that fashion.

Question: Did I hear you correctly? Excess funds will be used for candidate recruitment?

Martin: Yes. Not for for candidate recruitment, for candidate schools… even before this, the commitment was to help fund schools around the country.

Question: [partly unintelligible] …when speaking to a Democratic donor who, let’s say, says “We’re giving you money because we want a better understanding of the process, but we’re not comfortable with their money go to recruiting Green Party members.”

Martin: Well, but that’s their decision. We have already collected enough money to do these filings. We’ve collected over $4 million since Wednesday. That’ll cover our filings in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. So I’m not saying, do not donate to the Green Party, I’m saying it’s a matter of your own judgment, but what I’m saying is, this is our commitment, and was our commitment prior to this issue of recall.

Neither Stein nor anyone in her campaign has addressed this blatant violation of their promise to donors not to use the funds for party campaigning.

    • Dramphooey

In other words they will use the money to help reelect Donald Trump and people like him in 2020.

      • leastyebejudged

I guess the Dems better get busy and try something new maybe oh nevermind, same old shit as usual. Maybe put the blame for the next 8 years where it belongs.

        • Dramphooey

I agree with you. I think this recount nonsense distracts from the real problem. The Democrats lost the working class voter and we need to figure out how to wake these people up to the fact that they are being tricked by Republicans into voting against their own interests. Nobody is going to fix anything when everyone is saying nothing is wrong and that somehow we were cheated.

          • SoCalGal20

Dems lost voters who care more about keeping “those people” (people who aren’t white) out of the country and terrorism. Hillary won the voters who voted on the economy.

          • Dramphooey

Then we have to win them over by making the very strong point that one of our greatest Democratic presidents made: “we have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

          • SoCalGal20

Or, you know, not try to coddle whiny white people and motivate others to get out and vote. I’m white and I’m really fucking tired of some white people wallowing in their privilege instead of sucking it up and accepting the world is changing.

          • IamM

Yes. The ‘working class’ does not consist entirely, or mostly, of white bigots and white morons. We need to stop letting people conflate them.

          • SoCalGal20

Exactly. We also need to stop with “Real American” equating to some blue collar white dude in the Midwest and “Real America” being some rural idyll in Iowa or wherever. Cities are also “Real America” and “Real Americans” are ALL of us.

          • IamM

Cities are also half of America in terms of population and far more than half in terms of economic productivity and innovation.

          • Dramphooey

      • BoGardiner

Precisely. And of course they’re on the record as saying Trump’s better for America than Clinton. Nader said the same about Bush being better than Gore. It’s a sure bet they’ll say it about whatever Dem runs against Trump in 2020.

  • JoseM4

Thanks Stein & Clinton ….. this is like winning all over again.

    • MonochromeMouse

Clinton didn’t have anything to do with this, Stein scammed a bunch of people out of millions of dollars, then said they were going to fund a recount, and at that point some members of the Clinton campaign said that if there was a recount they would be involved, then stein started withdrawing her recount petitions and has pocketed the money for herself.

      • And — Stein gets a really valauable contributors list to scam in the future!

        • OdieDenCO

who are going to be pissed, if she does not follow thru

          • Fund raising emails to progressive contributors always get some payback, and when they are done via the web, the outgoing costs are minimal. Anyone who contributed to the recount and left any information at all can expect to be bombarded by fake “Democratic Party Action Committees” which are Green Party or Jill Stein Fronts from now until the day they die.

  • What a wonderful distraction this served for Democrat Foster Campbell’s Senate effort in Louisiana — the millions of dollars raised could have made a difference there. One Senate seat could make a huge difference in saving health insurance for millions. Talk about a set up!

    • Ninja0980

That was the whole point of this, a shame so many can’t figure that out.
Jill Stein wants to destroy the Democratic party, not help it and giving $$$ to her is insane.

      • Exactly. She knew exactly what she was doing when setting this scheme up — it was a brazen attempt to build a mailing list, and rip off Hillary Clinton supporters who are still in mourning, and rightfully so, by coming across as her friend — when, in fact, she branded her as a nuclear war risk during the campaign. I do not believe in hell, but if there is, I am sure there is a special level reserved for lying political manipulators such as Jill who so things like this and fly to Putin’s Russia to make Kremlin videos extolling his record as a champion of world peace and human rights. (I am not backing off what she did last December, it is that bad).

    • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

Except that the recount effort is actually going forward on a county level and Stein is switching tactics by going to Federal Court.

So why start it only to stop?

    • Ninja0980

Because she has what she wanted.
$$$ and a list of people to target in 2020 when she undermines the Democrats again.

    • Lazycrockett

She’s not stopping it seems that an auto recount is gonna kick in and so there is no reason to spend the 1 million.

    • SoCalGal20

Apparently they didn’t stop. I guess they’re going to Federal Court to try to get a statewide recount in PA.

      https://twitter.com/ap/status/805279904732430336

      • Why don’t they pay the million dollars and sue for the money back? Or am I not reading this right? Do they have the money now?

        • SoCalGal20

I don’t know what the deal is with the money for PA. Given that WI keeps jacking up the price of the recount there (now the BoE says $3.9M?) they need to have some cash on hand.

Regarding PA, they moved their request from state court to Federal court.

    • Because she could not care less about changing the results in the recount states anyway. In fact, she prefers a President Trump to a President Clinton. A President Trump is better for the Green Party right now. She actually said that a President Clinton will lead us to nuclear war and be the end of us during the campaign. I am not making this up, she actually said this when asked who she prefers as President before election day! That is why this is so ridiculous — people should not be asking for recounts when they do not care who wins the election!

    • Lori

I’m pretty sure that answer to this question lies in the issue of what happened to all the money she raised for the recount.

I hate this. I hate all of this.

The Republicans are, with the assistance of certain unhelpful individuals on the far left, succeeding in fracturing the Democratic Party. They are laughing at us while we are fighting amongst ourselves over who is to blame.

I’m beginning to wonder if I want to stay in a party that can’t get its shit together and not move to one that can at least get its own people to vote for the top of the ticket and knows what’s really important.

Maybe my new friend has the right idea – go independent. To hell with everything.

    • Lazycrockett

The Dems picked up seats in the house and the senate which is truly amazing when you factor in the voter suppression going on across the country the DNC is actually weathering better than it should.

I’m not actually leaving the party I’ve been a member of since I first registered to vote, and I will be working at the local level to strengthen it. It’s just that I’d reached my limit with all the blamethrowing. This is exactly what the Republicans want.

The GOP in the Congress, along with their pet orangutan, over the next two years, will screw the the American public so badly, while the orangutan produces so may scandals, that the House will flip in 2018. Then we can stop most of the craziness. The only question is, how much damage will be done before we reach that point?

Black Mirror really affected me. It’s an anthology series (a la The Twilight Zone) centered around digital media and devices. Be forewarned, many of the episodes are extremely dark.

Going the other direction, I just started watching Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency on BBC on Demand. You might want to check out if it is available on any platform other than cable. BBC episodes frequently are. If your a Douglas Adams fan, I think you will like this.

We need a petition to abolish electronic voting machines. Elections for any office at the federal level should be on paper ballots.

    • TimCA

What the GOP might first propose are national standards in federal elections to effectively purge the rolls of everyone who can’t come up with impossible documentation of US citizenship. Once minorities, the youth and poor / working class people have been effectively disenfranchised then, and only then, can they deal with the paper ballot issue. 🙁

      • Ninja0980

You know they will propose that.
They want to make sure 2008 can never happen again.

    • DaddyRay

At the very least the voting machines should produce a paper log that can be audited later. I voted on one that produced a receipt that i was able to review before finalizing my results but there are many that do not produce anything to validate

I see a role for an appliance that produces your paper ballot. You make your selections, it produces a paper ballot. If the paper ballot is not what you wanted, it gets destroyed and you get to do it until you get what you want – one and only one ballot.

Then you walk over with your new paper ballot to either an old-school box with a slot in it, or a machine which reads it, counts the votes, and preserves the paper, because there is no such thing as an audit of an EV machine, as demonstrated in Philadelphia, where you press the “SUMMARIZE ELECTION” button, and a receipt saying the same thing it did on November 8 pops out? That’s not an audit.

Every restaurant in the world has a more rigorous audit of guest checks at the end of the night.

We have that in New York. The appliance is called a pen.

          • Lumpy Gaga

Cute. But to some people, hearing “It’s called a pen.” is the same as hearing “It’s called ‘use the stairs'”.

And one of the many camels’ noses under the tent which produced a verdict of “ELECTRONIC VOTING? IT’S AWESOME!” – AFTER the selection of Bush/Cheney in 2000 – were partisan disabled folk who insisted in Congressional hearings that the elimination of EV would disenfranchise them.

Now, they may have been lying Rethuglican fuckfaces in wheelchairs, but there is a nugget of tasty corn in that turd.

“Mr. Trump had asked a judge on Thursday to dismiss Ms. Stein’s request, saying she had not identified any fraud or illegal activity during the Nov. 8 election.”
(But what about the millions of illegal votes cast by non US citizens Mr Trump?…..Mr Trump?)

Jill doesn’t come through? I can’t believe it!

Stein is the only high point of this election.

Good news, good idea if nothing else, just piece of mind. ( sorta, I guess)

  • Probably a good idea. I don’t think a recount would have accomplished much. Let’s just sit back and see how things unfold. I suspect that within a fairly short amount of time, a lot of people who voted for Donald Trump are going to start having some serious misgivings about it. The way GOP leaders are lining up to kiss his ring, the GOP owns this. And I think this will be the GOP’s undoing. They’ll be doing some serious damage control after the 2018 midterms.

  • False information. No, the recount hasn’t been stopped. PA raised the cost to the point that the funds were not there to do it, SO, it is being challenged on a county by county basis. In theory, once enough Trump votes are removed, the race will be close enough to trigger an automatic recount.

Her electoral contributions are nearly as valuable as her musical ‘Somebody’s Scissor Sister’ stylings.

  • Is it too soon to say I told you so?

She raised millions, so why can’t she afford to spend $1 million on a bond?
