Madonna Spent Thanksgiving With Ali Forney’s Kids

Posted this afternoon to Madonna’s Instagram account:

“Had so much fun sharing Thanksgiving at the Ali Forney Center in Brooklyn! This center protects LGBT Youth from the harms of homelessness and empowers them to reclaim their lives. Each year the Ali Forney Center provides care for over 1,200 youth who are rejected by their family due to their LGBT identity. AFC provides these youth with tools they need to become independent and more importantly, AFC provides these youth with the love and support they are denied by their families. Because everyone deserves to be loved and everyone deserves a home.”

That’s Ali Forney founder Carl Siciliano in the back row.

  • David Walker

    Excellent. Thank you.

  • ByronK

Love it!! Just the looks on the kids’ faces are priceless!

    • S1AMER

Yeah, I had the same impression! No matter what good or bad things are yet to come for these kids, they’ll have one happy memory of a good day with people who cared.

    • Grumpy Old Man

That is the first thing I noticed, also. It is a beautiful picture!

    • Natty Enquirer

They’re thinking, “Who IS this nice old lady??”

      • Captain Jack

When I was that age 20 was old..

      • ByronK

Oh now Natty, everyone is only as old as they feel and I’m pretty sure they know who she is πŸ˜‰

        • marshlc

I dunno, my own kids in their mid-twenties would probably not recognize her if they saw her on the street. They’ve heard of her, but that’s about it.

          • Strepsi

Honey, i am a lifetime fan, I own every single one of her albums since 1983, but if I saw her on the street, I’d probably just say “What’s Janice from the Muppets doing out by herself?”

      • Strepsi

lol! But no — the super-gay kid in the front knows exactly who she is.

      • jomai

I work with these kids (ages 16-25) and I’m quite sure they do know who she is. They probably think she’s a little old and weird, but she is one of the Legendary Children. I will admit that I was with them on Wednesday, and didn’t know any of the music they were all singing along to… And yes, I admit that makes me old.

    • Ray Taylor

      Everyone wants to be there,
      therefore it is beautiful.

  • Lazycrockett
    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Good, I am glad to be pleasantly surprised. I hope they don’t bounce.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    Happy that she does this.
    Sad that she has to.

    • Ninja0980

Indeed, an amazing gesture but one she and others shouldn’t have to do.

  • Stephen Elliot Phillips

    Madonna for president 2020!

    • TheManicMechanic

      Make that 2017!

  • SoCalGal20

    How nice! Great photo!

OT but Joy Reid is doing the 5-7 ET shift tonight MSNBC tonight.

    • Lazycrockett

Joy really really needs a daily show.

      • Ninja0980

She had one… and it tanked in the ratings.

        • liberals and progressives mostly gave up on the cable news programs years ago. i never heard she had a show and i read a lot of political blogs.

        • Lazycrockett

That was the old Joy, not this feisty one we have now.

  • zhera

So nice when celebrities use their fame for good causes. I’m sure there are some who will whine about how she’s doing it for the attention. Well, fuck that. These kids NEED the attention and if the price to pay is that Madonna also gets some, that’s ok with me.

    • Nychta

Me, too. The way I see it, she’s using her celebrity and visibility to bring attention to the Center and to the plight of homeless LGBT kids.

      • The Professor

She has always been one of our staunchest allies.

            FLAGGED and REPORTED immediately

    • Robincho

And now, here’s Madge seeing Bea Arthur’s $300K gift to AFC and raising it by $700K. For someone who trafficks in nine figures, this won’t be even remotely inconvenient or troublesome…

      • stanhope

So she shouldn’t give anything? Ok dumb a s s, let’s see your check.

    • Strepsi

She posted it AFTER Thanksgiving. A famewhore would have told the paps before. She done good.

  • S1AMER

Good for her, both for giving her time and attention to help the kids, and for using her celebrity to inform other people about them and the work the center does for them!

  • Ernest Endevor

Good for her and good for them. And good to be reminded it’s time to send some money-love Ali’s way. Thanks, Joe.

  • The Return of Traxley
    • The Return of Traxley

Also, recount effort is at 5.2 million and still rolling ahead!

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

We still should keep an eye on them, but this is very encouraging.

      • Dazzer

The Green Party USA has been scrupulous in telling people donating that they have to be citizens of the United States or have the right and ability to vote in US elections.

If foreign donations were allowed, Stein’s recount campaign would be on about $3billion by now and rapidly rising.

    • DaddyRay

I am finding it difficult to get excited about this

      • that’s in part b/c you probably know that HRC isn’t going to do anything, even if the recount shows she did win. i’ll be the happiest person in the world ever to be proven wrong if that turns out the case, but she’s already said she’s going to abide by the current official results.

        • DaddyRay

I think it has more to do with how the election hurt so much and I am protecting myself – I will remain cautiously optimistic but bracing for the highly probable ridicule from the right when they get to dance on our grave

          • Friday

I don’t think this’ll actually hurt anything: it wouldn’t exactly be a big victory party if this actually did expose much or flip the totals but the fact is we know the Republicans cheat in as many ways as they can, (Particularly in Wisconsin) so it’s gotta be looked into some time even if it’s not enough to undo the voter-suppression.

  • Gigi

Say what you like about Madonna but this was a lovely thing that she did. Good for the kids, and good for her too.

  • greenmanTN

I was never a big Madonna fan, but I do believe that supporting LGBT youth is one of the best things an adult gay person or ally (allie?) can do, whether through the Ali Forney Center, the Trevor Project, or something more local.

  • djcoastermark

It’s nice to read/see/hear something positive these days. A little happy just came my way.

Also, Jill Stein is asking for volunteers in WI to help with the recount. I have no idea what the process is but if you’re in WI you may want to look into it.

  • G Thomas

I think this is my favorite thing Lady M has ever done.

  • SoCalGal20

Gee, NYT it would have been nice if you’d reported this BEFORE the election instead of having 20 stories on every front page about Hillary’s fucking emails.

    • Ninja0980

There were some stories like this out there, but as you said the media didn’t care and when they were reported on, Trump’s voters didn’t either.

      • marshlc

Which is one of the things I find so puzzling about this whole thing.

Trump voters are old white people without a lot of education. I’m an old white person without a lot of education, and so, I’ve worked a lot of shitty jobs. And one of the things that happens in shitty jobs is you learn what a terrible boss looks like.

There are lots of kinds of terrible bosses, but one common type is the kind who come on all flashy. They razzle dazzle the owners, who are happy to put the reins of their failing business in the hands of someone who talks a good game. A lot of money gets spent, new people who don’t understand the business get hired, old and trusted employees quit or get the boot, and within six months or so, flashy new boss explodes or implodes in some way. Maybe just doesn’t deliver on all the big talk, or maybe it’s more spectacular, like they’re caught stealing, or they just disappear, with the cops showing up a week later looking for them, or….

At any rate, I’ve had a pretty non spectacular working life, but I’ve had three managers who operate like Trump. I’ve also bought used vehicles from people like him, and contracted out home renovations – all disasters.

The world is full of smooth-talking big-talking operators. I don’t see how you get to be an old person without being able to spot one coming a mile away.

        • another_steve

Marshlc, yours is an incredibly honest and brilliant comment. Perhaps the best I’ve read on JMG today.

          Kudos to you.

        • Robert Conner

“I don’t see how you get to be an old person without being able to spot one coming a mile away.”

Apparently you don’t live in Florida. They’ve elected Rick Scott twice.

        • CanuckDon

Your work experiences sound very similar to mine so I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. It has baffled me why blue collar workers would intentionally vote for such a smarmy, intimidating, compassion-less loud mouth knowing full well that the majority of them have worked for the same type of monster.

I worked for a couple of them….the last one was the final straw that drove me into self-employment after five years of putting up with his idiocy, mis-managing ways, bullying, and driving away long-time customer accounts. He also acted as our outside sales rep. I actually had customers who would ask me not to send him to their offices when they had a project to do. I can envision the world’s nation leaders doing the same with Trump.

          • AJ Drew

but who would they ask? Who in his current administration is better than sending DT himself?

        • my grandmother was one of the shrewdest, smartest business women i’ve ever met. black, born poor, lived thru riots and personal tragedy, etc. she could see someone trying to steal her money a mile away, from since she was 16 on up.

but at the end of her life, after grandpa died, she got lonely and fearful of death. she started giving away a lot of money to the TV preachers. we finally had to take over control of her estate; she was up to $100/wk and heading towards more.

she died with lots of money, but i think if not for us stepping in and taking over control she would’ve given it all to the con men on TV talking about jeebus.

i don’t know how long this blog will last, but if any of you ever read about me giving money to that kind of scam, i order you to call a lawyer and have me committed, or assigned a financial manager. to this day, i can’t explain why she fell for them like that. and i pray to gods i don’t believe in i never will do the same.

          • marshlc

Religion. It’s always fucking religion, isn’t it?

I understand how the impulse toward spirituality can be a comfort and a strength to people. But it makes them so vulnerable to any crooked liar who comes along, because in order to really have faith, they have to put away their critical facilities. They’re walking around defenceless, like the immuno-compromised in a plague epidemic.

          • stanhope

I knew a lady who gave $200,000 to one of those TV preacher thieves. She was elderly, Black and had no children…..those thieves actually came to visit her ONCE tomget the money.

”Jesus Fuckin’ Christ Shirley, you better tell me someone had a gun to your head”
-My Aunt Margaret, not even 10 minutes at my Aunt Shirley’s house before Shirley starts running her mouth about voting for Trump, ‘immagrints’ and the guy at the bank who wears a turban.
There was a happy ending, after Aunt Margaret took Shirley’s house/car keys and hid them in the neighbor’s bird bath, she took me, my cousin Jason and the girl he’s ”living in sin” with to Ruth Chris Steakhouse.

        • zhera

The only explanation I have is racism and misogyny. They KNOW he’s a lying liar who lies, a con man who will steal all their money. But he talks about a wall, and deporting those icky brown people, and punishing women who have abortions. Making America great again! Screw everyone else, WE get to be great! (Except they don’t, but they want to believe so that’s what they do.)

        • greenmanTN

The only thing you left out is “the golden parachute,” where no matter how awful the CEO of a corporation is, even drive it into the ground harming the emplyees, retirees who expected their future was assured, but still end up getting a HUGE bonus for fucking it up.

      • Do Something Nice

And that is party the fault of the Clinton campaign. They wanted to make it about Trump being a pig, which, of course, he is. And the media had a feeding frenzy with Clinton hammering him on that, and Trump masterfully played it up. The result? Details didn’t matter and we elected a moron for our president.

      • JCF

Trumpanzees will look at that “shrunk to $50 million” figure and see it as a lottery: “that $50 million could be for ME!!!” [Lotteries are BS also.]

    • beergoggles

There was a pretty good tweetstorm on how the NYT has been the source of a lot of damaging fake news about democrats over the years: http://electionado.com/canvas/1479778397637

Why would you think this has changed and they would report real news about republicans?

    • ChrisMorley

It’s not all bad news. As well as losing nearly Β£26m ($31.8m) building his golfing empire in Scotland, he has had to pump more than Β£102m ($125m) of his own money into both businesses, despite losing increasing sums on both investments.
Good news: The accounts suggest he may never make a profit on either resort. His losses at his golf course and boutique hotel at Balmedie, north of Aberdeen, which he once claimed would be β€œthe world’s greatest golf course” and where he plans to build 2,750 homes and holiday flats, also
      continue to mushroom.
Trump’s personal loans to Trump International Golf Course Ltd (TIGCS), which has owned the Aberdeenshire estate where the resort is being built since 2006, increased by Β£2.6m last year.
That took his total investment there to Β£39.4m – well above the Β£31.5m valuation he has given for the course and 19-bed hotel. That increased loan was needed to help stem cumulative operating losses totalling Β£9.7m by the end of 2015.
The accounts for both companies (Turnberry and Aberdeen), published this week, state that their financial viability rests on Trump’s loans and his continued willingness to underwrite their losses. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/oct/12/donald-trump-scotland-golf-course-resort-losses

      • ChrisMorley

Note that audited public accounts for his many golf businesses are only published for the two in Scotland and one at Doonbeg, Co. Clare, Ireland, and all three are haemoraging cash.

This is a BADLY written article by Occupy Democrats (as many of their articles serm to be, tbh). The article starts out talking about 4 precints in ONE county where this happened. Then the second half of the article refers to the precincts as COUNTIES. Their point still stands about something shady there but the premise it happened in multiple counties is bogus based on the info presented. I believe I did hear that this happened in another county but that’s not cited here.

    • SoCalGal20

WI requires that a certain number of voting machines get audited by law. This isn’t a special audit.

The recount is more detailed in that it’s a hand count of every ballot.

I don’t know how transparent the audit process is.

  • Robert Anthony

    I love this. And her.

  • Blake J Butler

O/T: Im surprised that Stein followed through on her word so far with regards to the recount, Hillary would be crucified if she asked for a recount and the democrats would be painted by the media as sore losers.

Considering that she is critical of both parties, it would be incredibly difficult to portray her as being in for Clinton, as her motives are not quite clear, the only rational reason for her to ask for a recount is to see if she met that 5% threshold.

    • OdieDenCO

I will give her the benefit of the doubt, on this and assume she is doing this for the good of the country, until she proves otherwise.

    • Sam_Handwich

looks like some sort of charade she’s pulling for her Russian pals

the GOP will be in court in 72 counties with frivolous challenges, demanding certain votes get tossed out, etc. Stein and her party don’t have the resources to deal with any of that.

      • $4M+ will buy a bit of lawyer time. she’s raised that and more, from what i’ve read.

  • The Professor

    Madge for the win.

  • OdieDenCO

    nice!

  • Silver Badger

Don’t mean to criticize Madonna, but doesn’t she have a rather large bunch of children of her own she should be with? I could be confusing her with another.

    • marshlc

Because a person cannot possibly be a mother and also do other things. Right.

      • Silver Badger

It is hard to be on two continents at once.

        • marshlc

I don’t give a shit about Madonna and know nothing about the details of her private life, but the idea that a mother must be with her children at all times in order to be a good mother pisses me off mightily.

          • Silver Badger

I certainly apologize for posting a comment you disagreed with. I will try to be more sensitive next time. Not. Get over it or die with it. How do you think her own kids feel about being left out for a good photo op.?

          • JD

Doesn’t she live in Britain? you know, where US Thanksgiving is not a thing? or did you mean that a parent must never be away from his/her children…assuming none traveled with her…

          • Silver Badger

Gosh! Shouldn’t her kids be in the picture with her? I thought she lived in France. No matter. I’m sure she has people to care for her kids when she is at work.

          • dood, back down on this one, you are wrong. a woman, a successful working woman, leaves her kids all the time. they deal, and i’m sure her kids want for nothing. t’giving isn’t a holiday everywhere and i’m sure her kids are used to the fact that their mother is a jet setting professional by now. and even if they aren’t, how she chooses to raise her kids isn’t really your business or a thing your judgement should be served upon.

          • Silver Badger

Would you sing a different tune if it were a man? Double standards are a drag.

          • no, and i think you’re being a bit obtuse to not see the sexism in your critique. i don’t know where her kids celebrated an american holiday and i don’t really care with whom they did or did not.

i do object to “the momma must be with her children on Sacred Special days b/c moms do that or they are bad moms,” and that’s essentially what you initially said.

my mother worked as an ER doctor for some years. i don’t have to be told what it’s like when your mom can’t come to your Special Whatever, when you are a child. but as i grew up, i cam to appreciate two things: 1) some of that money paid for my college education and b) no one ever thought that it was dad’s responsibility to cook on the holidays. my mom is a horrible cook and i was always glad when she did NOT prepare the holiday meal. our housekeeper was far more talented.

unusual people live unusual lives. until there is an official report stating otherwise, i’ll choose to believe that Madge is doing right by her kids. haven’t you ever celebrated some traditional holiday on the ‘wrong’ day? xmas in july for december birthday kids, easter dinner with family the week before easter, cause schedules? etc. for some of us, celebrations on off days really was “normal,” and in no way indicative of poor parenting. it was only schedules their jobs required. not everybody works 8-5, M-F, official govt holidays off. and that’s OK.

          • Silver Badger

You are putting words in my mouth. I never said anything about her being a bad mom. I wasn’t even sure she had kids, but seemed to remember she adopted a bunch. I do not accept your rant, but cherish your right to rant.

          • you said, “she should be with her kids.” i don’t think you have the information, or right, to judge when and where she, or I or any other woman “should be” with her kids. i also notice you said nothing about the father of said children and where he should be.

for me, that’s sexism. sorry if you can’t understand why.

          • Silver Badger

Let it go. Life is too short. If memory serves, and I admitted it doesn’t always, I wasn’t even sure she had kids, they are all adopted. This doesn’t necessarily mean there was a man involved at all.

    • another_steve

You’ll be demonized for that comment, SB, but I totally grok.

We must hang together, or the young ones will hang us apart.

      • Silver Badger

Oh yes. People will be angry. Thanksgiving is an American holiday and last I heard, her family was in France. No big deal, but you know how intolerant the young are.

        • another_steve

We old fags are on the endangered list, SB. We must hang together or we will perish.

So much of our generation of queer men have already perished.

So we survivors have an awesome and burdensome task before us.

          • Silver Badger

But I didn’t really. I did watch a bunch of people put words in my mouth. If you read my original post you will see that I wasn’t really positive she had kids.

          • SomeOfThemWant2UseU

Come on. You’re being disingenuous. Based on your other comments you’re far too smart to think that. Based on one word alone (“should”), it’s obvious that your question had far more implications in it than finding out whether or not Madonna was a mother.

          • Silver Badger

What ever. Like the song says, let it go.

          • SomeOfThemWant2UseU

On the face of it, it’s neglectful and abusive. The most basic responsibility of a parent is to provide a home for their child – both a physical home and an emotional home.

You’re being here is what’s creepy.

      • Friday

What the fuck are you even talking about?

    • Treant

Perhaps Carl is rather short? Madonna is only 5′ 5″ according to The Google.

Warranted, I’ve always noticed that kids keep getting taller and even I was no exception. I’m 1″ taller than my father, and 1-3″ taller than either grandfather.

      • Friday

Well, that only makes me a wee bit taller than her, so yeah, it’s just something that seems to be an ongoing trend.

    • perversatile

I remember back when 5ft 10 was considered tall πŸ˜„

  • worstcultever

Very nice action and statement from Madge.

Considered engaging with troll below, decided against it.

  • Robert Conner

Huh, no. Not everyone deserves to be loved. Parents who toss their kids into the street like so much garbage don’t deserve love. They deserve a swift kick in the face. And then a couple more kicks just to be sure.

  • SoCalGal20

NYT can go bankrupt at this point. They’re useless as a news organization (with a few exceptions).

    • Sam_Handwich

it’s not a Times editorial, it’s the opinion of one UCLA political science professor.

of course i can’t read the article becuz paywall

      • leastyebejudged

PolSci is such waste in general

      • SoCalGal20

It’s an article in their Upshot section. The person looked at the data and determined that both candidates spent most of their advertising going after the other candidate’s character rather than talking about issues, which is true based on the ads I saw. However, they give a pass to the media for basically doing the ssme since that’s what the candidate did.

      • worstcultever

Tip for people with Macs – I browse with Safari and in “preferences” you can select “private browsing” and the NYT paywall won’t stop ya. (But then I switch back for boards like this, because private browsing forgets my disqus login and stuff like that)

      • another_steve

Yeah, Sam… what’s with that? Ten free views a month and then fuck you?

A collective hernia on them, they should get.

  • Blake J Butler
    • Treant

That’s because one is my President. The other is Not My President And Never Will Be.

    • leastyebejudged

Our first atheist president and our first autistic child, be careful what you wish for people….

      • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

Please…don’t. We don’t know that Barron is autistic.

        • marshlc

We do know that he’s a child and didn’t choose any of this. Doesn’t deserve any attacks. If he’s autistic, he needs our compassion and his privacy even more than a neurotypical child – at any rate, he’s not fair game.

          • Lazycrockett

I have yet to see any evidence that Barron is Autistic. Shy maybe bone tired at 4 in the morning in front of a bunch of seething fanatics celebrating their leaders win would freak any child out.

          • marshlc

Yeah, even “normal” kids are twitchy and weird – that’s just how kids are.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that he is on the spectrum. And I wouldn’t be surprised to find that Trump, rather than using his money and celebrity to be a powerful spokesperson for autistic kids, or differently-abled people in general, instead would choose to pretend his kid is perfect.

ETA – but anyway, we can just leave him alone. He’s just a kid.

          • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

Exactly. We can’t be acting as the Republicans did during the Terri Schiavo debacle and diagnose him from videos and images. The only person who has any authority to do this is their family physician.

        • leastyebejudged

Oh, you assumed I was talking about Barron.

        • Paula

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that Barron seemed different. I guess others noticed, also. He might be on the Autism spectrum.

          • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

But this is all speculation. The only person who has the authority to say whether or not he is autistic is his physician.

    • djcoastermark

Sadly the next 4 years will be subjected to pics of the new first family dining on sumptuous meals in a palace and laughing,( at us ) while us peons look upon our meager feast and worse for those with nothing. But our joy will come from those we are near and dear to, as opposed to a fake royalty photo op. That is what will make us stronger.

      • Blake J Butler

And who exactly voted for this orange asshole ? half of white people who are either so stupid to believe that he will be their “savior” and bring their jobs back? people who are as bigoted as he is and want a excuse to treat minorities like shit? or people that think that a pussygrab administration brings forward the end of times ? how about all of the above.

I was looking up donors on FB for the non-profit organization i work with, and i was disgusted to find posts in my area with american flag emoticon’s the day after the election with the phrase “praise god”.

I have a clean conscience because i know what i did was right, its these assholes that voted for him that should never get a free pass, their social media posts and their behaviors in public are never going to be forgotten or forgiven. Because you have to be a vile human being to harass and make fun of people like pussygrab and his supporters have over the past year.

        • another_steve

Love to you, hon. These are surreal times we’re living through. We’ll get through it though.

Meditation can help. Bio feedback can help.

If those don’t help, try this:

Two parts Beefeater Gin. One part dry vermouth. Three baby olives on a stick.

          • blue cheese stuffed olives are the best. or, if you’re like me, a bloody mary with a fat shrimp and one olive.

          • djcoastermark

And then stuffing those poor innocent baby olives with cheese! The horrors! πŸ˜‰

          • djcoastermark

I’ve never really cared for bloody marys, but hubs did make me one using Camaronazo with a skewer of shrimp and I did like it.

          • TuuxKabin

Oh HONaY, Bloody Marys are like vitamins. Like a meal. The shrimp gives ya’ the protein to absorb the etoh. Keep goin’ with ’em.

    • worstcultever

hideous piece of shit, the worst garbage humanity has to offer. btw what’s happened to his fake vanity forehead hair swoop. jesus I hate this fucking fuck with every fiber of my being. his son looks absolutely ashamed and miserable as usual
      #free barron

      • TuuxKabin

Every day I hate him more and more. Unhealthy. But there it is. I have a sense of sadness about Barron. There are several videos on youtube about Barron’s flat affect and seeming lack of interest in his environment, suggesting autism. One was a ‘selection’ in the multi split screen after a video plays. I watched it. It was painful, and sad in the truest sense. I don’t want to post the link, but there are at least three or four to be viewed. It made me think that is one of the first of many reasons to keep him in Manhattan. Delaying full exposure of what could be the boy’s condition. I hope he does not become public domain, as the rest of the family is, and in watching what I saw, I even felt empathy for his mother.

    • Snarkaholic

I’m surprised Barron wasn’t forced into a suit and tie.

      • another_steve

Save the little boy. Who will care for the little boy.

Caring progressives should initiate a rescue mission.

      • ByronK

I’m so fucking sick of these ridiculous attacks on Rosie but she really should have known better. Not it’s nothing but “She attacked him, mocked him, leave the children alone, why are you picking on him, you’re a fat monster with a mentally disturbed child” blah, blah, blah. Fact is, other media had speculated about him perhaps being autistic. So what. 1 in every 68 American children are autistic and depending on where they are on the spectrum, they can function quite well with the proper treatment and environmental adjustments. But no, she’s accusing him of being mentally ill. Opportunistic bullshit that victimized the boy more than anything Rosie posted.

    • bob

That pic is disturbing on so many levels ! It was thanksgiving , you have to go with a photo op that shows you ahead of your wife and kid ! I do think barron has some sort of problem. Only once did I read that melanoma said he was having trouble during the campaign. I could just here trump mocking him like he did that reporter. His biggest obstacle is having an asshole for a father.

  • Clea

        • medaka

I see we have something in common (lol): zero patience with trolls.

          • TuuxKabin

As Mrs. Slocombe would say, “and I’m JUST in the mood.”

    • Many LGBT homeless youth are, indeed, African-American. Homosexuality is less tolerated within their culture. Some of the reasons are religious, some of it is isn’t. Some of them are escaping sexual/physical abuse or some other intolerable home life. Whatever the reasons, black youth make up a disproportionate percentage of the homeless population.

Of course, you can’t bring these things up without being accused of racism. It’s unfortunate, because you can’t begin to address these problems if you’re unwilling to deal with reality as it is.

    • jutta

There are at least 3 white kids in the foto and some where I’m not sure just from looking at the foto. Maybe you should just look more carefully.

Richard Painter, Chief Ethics Counsel for George W. Bush, and Norman Eisen, Chief Ethics Counsel for Barack Obama, believe that if Trump continues to retain ownership over his sprawling business interests by the time the electors meet on December 19, they should reject Trump.

    • Sam_Handwich

Trump’s electors are entrenched republican scum. they will fall in line just like Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney. but yes, i still hold the tiniest shred of hope that 10% of them might rise to the occasion.

      • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

I agree that they won’t vote against him. Their desire for unfettered power will override any sense of duty for their country. Story of the modern Republican Party, really.

It’s truly tragic that what the EC will do on Dec. 19 will be entirely contrary to its original purpose. Something must be done about it.

    OT-

In the current edition of Republicons Behaving Deplorably, a Louisiana politician who was busted last month for sexting with a 17 year old boy has given an interview. While he admits sending inappropriate texts, he won’t answer other allegations like whether he gave the boy a pair of special underwear. He is adamant that “I did not have sex with that boy.”

This man has a bright future as a Republicon politician now that deplorable is the key to success.

Why be so coy? Politician is Mike Yenni, and the telling take-away from that article is this:

β€œTo simply say it, I’m not gay,” Yenni told Fox8 this week. He also repeatedly said he didn’t know why he texted with the teen in the first place.”

      Ahem. SO, dementia? Heh.

    • TuuxKabin

After yesterday’s appetizers and a bottle of Tempranillo de espaΓ±a we postponed dinner until today. Just finished. Stretched the holiday a bit, tho it’s confusing as to what day it is. Feels like Sunday.

    • Cuberly

I actually hit a pretty deep low late yesterday. Totally irrational on my part.

At the hotel I’ve been living out of for the past fucking 7 months, it’s right next door to a Best Buy. Went for a walk to see all the Black Friday crowd lining up, thinking it’d give me sort of a giggle. But it did the opposite. The line to get in before it opened wrapped around to the back of the store and all the way up a fence bordering the store’s parking lot. Not sure why but it gave me a bit of a gut punch, thought, how many of those “bargain hunters” felt as compelled when it came to voting? Or, their healthcare, the environment, their rights, their schools, the economy…etc…

I realize I was projecting my less than stellar opinion of a broader electorate, angry at the fact that so many sat this election out. That wasn’t fair for me to do.

But, after all that’s transpired, seeing that very American attribute of conspicuous consumption, my brain just bottomed out.

Doing much better now. Not perfect, just hanging in there. The parking lot at Best Buy is filled, in fact a second lot across the street is completely full as well. There’s security guards standing out in front of the store. People walking out with very large boxes and many many bags.

      Insert cute hug image here.

You’re going to be in DC? Lots to do. Had friends on the hill, near the Eastern Market. Great place for weekend breakfasts. Lots to see and eat there.

        • djcoastermark

I love DC. hubs used to live there and booked us a room somewhere in the heart of it all so that we can walk to the museums and nightlife afterwards. (Though his idea of walk is more like a damn marathon to me) I’ll have to ask him about Eastern Market.

          • TuuxKabin

Apart from being a market there is a very popular counter service food spot. I do not stand in line, except boarding a bus or plane, but stood in line I did for breakfast there. Can’t remember the name of it, but it’s obvious. Good southern breakfast cooking. Surrounding the building are stalls set up with arts and craft vendors, antique dealers and others. It’s a colorful sight. This, however, is like 20 years ago.

      • Sam_Handwich

go see the Ghost Clock at the Renwick gallery

        • djcoastermark

One of the museums I really want to go to is the new African American museum. Tickets are sold out but we’re hoping we can get in on standby. If not, the Renwick sounds fantastic.

          • Sam_Handwich

i’d like to see that too! Renwick is not very big – it’s one of the brick houses near the WH that Jackie Kennedy helped to save from demolition. It’s all American art and furnishings. The ghost clock is just something to behold in person.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Let’s say we get all 3 states to flip. I worry the Democrats will prize “peaceful transition” to winning, which would be both deflating and stupid.

      • Lazycrockett

Its gonna be very very interesting. Michigan is razor thin and I still don’t think its been called. So if Wi flips, Mi goes to Hillary its all up to Pa, which hasn’t gone republican since the 70’s. Then what does Hillary do? What does the EC do? what the hell does the House do? Then WTF do the citizens of this country do when a simple recount creates a even huger rif between red and blue.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

If all 3 flip then I think that if I were Hillary, I’d take the Presidency if only because if she’s been watching the news about appointments and the train wreck of conflict of interests, she’s got to know not taking it will have global implications of the worst sort.

If not enough but Trump gets less than 270 then it goes to the House and who knows how they’ll vote. They don’t want to piss off the Trumpeteers but good grief, some of them has to know that this pre-inaugural clusterfuck of scandals is just an amuse bouche of the crap Trump has in store for their party.

The Democratic Party has a really shitty rep for not fighting hard for its stated ideals. It owes its supporters a good strong fight and not to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.

As for the citizens, it depends on the scenario. If all 3 flip AND Hillary wins, I’m OK with not gloating but I am OK with coming down hard on people who took advantage of the temporary Don win to act like bigots & assholes openly and they should be told to get back in their basket. As for Trumpeteers, they will only be satisfied with a Trump win and yes, I am afraid some of them will become violent. Though I confess I wonder if they would become violent once Trump doesn’t fulfill any of his promises to them. So a violent freakout by part of our country may be unavoidable.

        • Cuberly

Wait, heard earlier MI had been called for Trump. Thought they were done counting.

If you’re looking for something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend, be thankful that you have something to wear. These poor lads don’t have a stitch, yet they still seem to be happy.

Where is the gofundme to urge the Olympic committee to go back to nude Olympics, as they were meant to be….??

    • TuuxKabin

      They’re better off unclothed.

    • coram nobis

This would qualify as “riparian entertainment”, as Mrs. Bucket would say.

  • DaddyRay

Since Trump has been refusing intelligence briefings I wonder how long it will take for him to find out about Fidel Castro

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

      He’ll be all “Fidel who?”

    • Cuberly

      Tweet forthcoming. (sigh)

The prez elect fucking tweets. Alas, here is where we are.

      • DaddyRay

True – Trump will probably get the news from Top Trending Tweets

        • Cuberly

Most likely he’s still raging about his double chinned pics.

  • Ninja0980

In a way though, Fidel has been a figurehead for a while now.
His brother Raul is running the show now so I don’t know how much this death actually changes anything other then symbolism.

    • KCMC

Whut? Fidel died at the Ali Forney Center in Brooklyn?

      • DaddyRay

No – he died in Cuba. The most recent post on JMG is typically used to communicate news since there is not thread to talk about it.

        • houstonray

I’ve thought lately that maybe Joe should give us an “open Trump thread” every night as the last post, ha.

      • DaddyRay
    • Cuberly

Well, Raul was barely carrying on his bros legacy. Raul has been open to more modernization. He’s made reforms that have helped Cuba, albeit incrementally.

Me thinks things will change in a big way. The primary hardliner was Fidel. Broadening economic opportunity has gained considerable traction.

    • Nychta

It’s the end of an era. Of all the world leaders alive when I was a wee bairn, I think Queen Elizabeth is the only one left.

  • DaddyRay

    Back in August
“Putin wishes ‘dear friend’ Fidel Castro happy 90th birthday”
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/putin-wishes-dear-friend-fidel-castro-happy-90th-110045676.html

Should tell you all you need to know about how Trump will deal with Cuba

    • Cuberly

Heh, the biggest ideological obstacle out of the way I suppose.

Ivanka has booked a flight to negotiate a new gaudy as fuck hotel is my guess.

      • DaddyRay

        Yup

HOW DONALD TRUMP’S COMPANY VIOLATED THE UNITED STATES EMBARGO AGAINST CUBA
        http://www.newsweek.com/2016/10/14/donald-trump-cuban-embargo-castro-violated-florida-504059.html

        • Cuberly

          Heh, he already has inroads.

          He’s creating JERBS!

          • DaddyRay

Which makes the RWNJ tweets claiming Obama is crying over his pal Fidel being dead all the more amusing

          • Cuberly

I went over to breitbart, knowing full well what the comments would be like.

Some wishing for the communist Obama to be next.
That Obama will call Castro a good friend.
That Obama will attend the funeral.
            Colin Kapernick is crying.
…someone that compares Castro’s death to Ted Kennedy’s.
And, what is up with countless mentions about Colin Kapernick……WTF!?
Someone mentions that it’s snowed in Tokyo for the first time in 54 years therefore global warming is dead along with Castro…..no joke…
One commenter wishes Pope Francis would follow him in death.
Someone calls the FLOTUS a wookie.
Someone claims Castro secret police have already infiltrated our government.

The number of wishes for Obama’s death…..wow.

            https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/736708962d6d9ab3e83605e7220e503ba616b5483a168e5de95e2ce0c6b851f1.jpg

Ok, that was only after scrolling a few screens of comments.

          • DaddyRay

Such a cesspool of deplorables they have

          • Cuberly

My jaw dropped. It was as if they tried to outdo each other in vileness. As if Dems ever though Cuba was some sort of model to copy.

It got worse and worse as I went down the thread.

And I fucking hate Castro, and I’m a liberal!

          • DaddyRay

They equate liberals with communists is the only thing I can think of which is what surprises me with their indifference to Trump’s connection with Putin

          • Cuberly

            Exactly.

Still think Breitbart is a cult of some sort.

          • DaddyRay

It is a cult of pessimistic haters that feed on conspiracy theories as long as it is directed towards a democrat

          • DaddyRay

One has to wonder why the Alt-Right is so intimidated by competent leaders

          • Cuberly

The cynical vibe over there. As if anything would quench their hate.

  • DaddyRay

Not even Castro could survive 2016.

  • bob

I knew I shouldn’t have checked here before I went to bed ! Even though raul was in charge, he never would have went against fidel’s wishes. Cuba will be nuts, and trump will get his hotel and golf course he’s been wanting.

    • DaddyRay

And he will sign the deal for the Golf Course from the Oval Office

  • Cuberly

Well, made my feelins known on Breitbart. Literally within seconds of posting. No joke, SECONDS. This is what happened. Bots?

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9286176005ff3c320e087e9bb9045c898b558c4846a2ca1a3d9bda166eb2117b.jpg

    • DaddyRay

Thanks for going over there – I wouldn’t bother as there is no having conversations with insane people

      • Cuberly

It’s amazing. When you post a differing opinion whinin seconds. No joke, you get an avalanche of bile.

I still think a lot of the comments there are bot driven. So many are repetitive and outside any sort of norm, when it comes to the time it takes to post a comment.

        • Ninja0980

I got banned from there a long time ago.

          • Cuberly

I clicked on some of the profiles and so many have at most 3K or fewer comments.

I still think it’s bots or paid commentors, russia, macedonia?

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

So ironic how much they love Russia now. They adore an ex-KGB head during the Soviet era. They need to shut the hell up about socialism/communism because it’s obvious they don’t care about that at all as long as their “Blob Emperor” and Putin hate the same people they do.

      • Cuberly

I still think a LOT of the commenters there are bots or paid. There is just no way that many are that attentive with such speed.

Seriously, head on over and the minute you post a comment within seconds you’re slammed. I’ve never experienced that when commenting. No joke, I clicked the post icon and literally had a commenter bash me at the same time.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I notice the screenshot shows comments making little or no sense. I agree that there’s bots at work. Mind you, Trump has been pretty open about his boner of Putin so I doubt it bothers people like Bannon much.

        • Reality.Bites

Obviously no woman who looks like “Bianca” has ever been on Breitbart.

  • DaddyRay

As a funeral gift Obama should give Cuba GITMO back

    • Cuberly

Unfortunately Obama has said closing Gitmo won’t happen before he leaves office. (sigh)

      • DaddyRay

There are only 60 remaining detainees there

        • Cuberly

Prez gave an interview where he said he wouldn’t be able to close it due to the remaining detainees. He referred to them as dangerous.

          • DaddyRay

So is Trump but he isn’t in GITMO

          • William

Congress blocked transferring the to US prisons.

          • leastyebejudged

Dangerous when they finally are released and it turns out most of them were innocent too.

  • DaddyRay

OK heading to bed – hope the celebrations down in Florida can heal some old wounds and will allow them to move on

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    Fidel Castro – dead

    • Reality.Bites

In one final swipe at the United States, he has upstaged Florence Henderson

Good morning JMGers in North America.

Here’s a photo I snapped at school two days ago. On a pathway, as I was
heading out. Some students must have taken it upon themselves to make this.

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f6de4510ec13a24d7d812ca6e386ec0d7b205c07103b643f6aed5b2a112576a1.jpg

It made my world a better place for a moment. Hope it does the same for
    you too.

    • TuuxKabin

Sure did. Nature’s simplistic beauty, recreated into another form. Lots of better place moments here, thank you for adding to them. Lovely.

  • TheManicMechanic

    Thanks, Madge!

  • JCF

    Good job, Madge. <3

  • June Gordon

Several youth carcasses were later found in the alley, drained of all their blood and cred.

    • Robert Conner

  • MagicMadge

And now she’s dating three of them!

  • Villager

This is very cool. Madonna is spotlighting a great cause.
Did the center move from Manhattan? Or do they have another space in Brooklyn?
