Sweden Rejects Ecuador’s Demand For Guarantee That Julian Assange Won’t Be Extradited To United States

But only because the US hasn’t yet formally asked. ABC News reports:

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister says WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should receive guarantees that he will not be extradited to the US if he faces justice in Sweden after four years of living in the South American nation’s embassy in London.

Mr Assange, who enraged Washington by publishing a flood of secret US diplomatic cables, fled to the embassy fearing that Sweden could end up sending him on to the United States where he could face prison for leaking US secrets.

“If we can obtain guarantees that Mr Assange will not face extradition to the third country, I think it’s fine for him to face Swedish justice — if there are charges, because there are still no charges,” Foreign Minister Guillaume Long said.

But a Swedish Government official said on Thursday it would not be possible to offer Mr Assange or Ecuador a guarantee, as Sweden has not been asked by the United States to extradite him.

“It would actually breach the constitution if the Government would give such a guarantee in advance,” Cecilia Riddselius of the Swedish Ministry of Justice’s Division for Criminal Cases and International Judicial Co-operation said.

He won’t be extradited because a Trump administration (gag) with Sessions as AG (gag) will not press charges.

Now he might have to come to American to when President Trump (gag) gives he a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Sorry for all the parenthetical comments. I thought I had no gag reflex (ask anyone!) but having to say President Trump (gag) really makes the bile churn.

Just call him Resident Trump. He is not my president.

        Cheeto-Mussolini (or Cheetolini)

I think that’s probably a transcription error and it’s supposed to be “comprising”. Or maybe Sean doesn’t know what words mean.

All religions are political ideologies. They were the only governments and laws that existed before political national borders.

The problem we face with all religions is that their adherents insist that their religion trumps sovereign constitutions. Because God.

    • NancyP

Yes! In Japan, wives (daughters) are not included in business discussions! Japanese men in the United States may attend a dinner at a business colleague’s house and wife / kids may be present, but business is not discussed, and the Japanese businessman understands that this sort of hospitality is customary in the US. The plus side of the Japanese attitude toward business meetings over food / alcohol is that the spouses aren’t bored to tears. Japanese etiquette does make things awkward for the few Japanese women executives, who may not relish the classic drink-each-other-under-the-table (or girly bar) evenings.

I used to lump Assange together with Snowden in my mind. Snowden actually came across as sane and sincere when John Oliver interviewed him months ago. Now I think that Assange is an opportunistic weasel and a prick and possible rapist, but I’m not sure about Snowden. Although he did run to Putin for protection, which is pretty skeevy.

    • SoCalGal20

Snowden wanted to go to South America. Assange “advised” him to go to Russia. Snowden apparently sought advice from Assange (mistake imo) even though he didn’t leak through Wikileaks.

      • Bared Bear

Oh, I didn’t know that about South America. Thanks. That’s actually on my short list of places to flee (Uruguay, if Spain doesn’t work out) for when Trump start dismantling gay marriage and shipping us to camps.
