Trump Offers Job Of National Security Adviser To Michael Flynn, Paid Lobbyist For Turkish Government

That swamp is SO drained, you guys. The Associated Press reports:

President-elect Donald Trump offered former military intelligence chief Michael Flynn the job of national security adviser as he began to build out his national security team Thursday, according to a senior Trump official. The move came as Trump made his most direct foray into foreign policy since the election, meeting with Japan’s prime minister.

Flynn, who served as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, has advised Trump on national security issues for months. As national security adviser, he would work in the White House and have frequent access to the president. The post does not require Senate confirmation.

The official wouldn’t say whether Flynn had accepted the job, which left open the possibility that the arrangement was not finalized. The official was not authorized to discuss the offer publicly and insisted on anonymity.

Flynn, who turns 58 in December, built a reputation in the Army as an astute intelligence professional and a straight talker. He retired in 2014 and has been a fierce critic of President Barack Obama’s White House and Pentagon, taking issue with the administration’s approach to global affairs and fighting Islamic State militants.

More from Politico:

Donald Trump wants to forbid his officials from lobbying for foreign governments, but one of his top national security advisers is being paid by a close ally of Turkey’s president. Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a vice chair of the Trump transition who is in the running for a top national security post in the new administration, runs a consulting firm that is lobbying for Turkish interests, an associate told POLITICO. Asked if Flynn’s firm was hired because of the general’s closeness to Trump, the associate, Robert Kelley, said, “I hope so.”

Kelley told POLITICO that the client, a Dutch consulting firm called Inovo BV, was founded by Kamil Ekim Alptekin. Alptekin is chairman of the Turkish-American Business Council, known as TAIK, an arm of the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey, whose members are chosen by the country’s general assembly and economic minister. In that role, Alptekin was involved in organizing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Washington earlier this year.

Are we trying to align with Russia to fight the Chinese or something? The entire defeat ISIS thing makes sense if the goal is to put Bashar al-Assad back into full control. He’s backed by Russia. Once that is done, if the Russian alliance lasts, something weird is going on. Assets in Africa? A stronger SE Asia policy?

  • Outlaw Woman

Just a note to Joe …

Are you aware that video ad on the right side of the screen (right now for Amazon Echo) forces the screen to scroll to it every time the ad changes or the video replays ?

When that happens, it makes it impossible to read the article or the comments, because the screen keeps scrolling up or down to make the ad position in view each time?

    • JoeMyGod

Video and auto-play ads are not permitted on JMG. If you are seeing one it’s because it has followed you from another site by using “malicious code” meant to thwart sites that block such ads. The easiest fix, for now, is to clear your browser history. My apologies.

      • Outlaw Woman

Now, this is coming from someone with modest computer skills… but clearing history, forms, cookies is a good thing in general. It helps things load better, etc. In the comment system Joe used years ago (JSkit) that would sever someone from their comment history (much gnashing of teeth) but with Disqus you just log back on.

    • Sam_Handwich

plus xenophobia, homophobia, Islamophobia, all that and more

    • moebym

Misogyny makes the most sense to me. This is anecdotal, but I’ve heard of many voters who didn’t vote for her because her voice or manner of speaking bothered them, because of the cookie comment she made decades ago, because she did not change her name after marriage, because they thought her period (oh, for fuck’s sake – she’s SIXTY-NINE!) may affect her decision-making, or because they simply don’t believe women should ever be President.

      • Lazycrockett

and a large number of those were uneducated and educated white women.

      • Yixing’s Fluffer

The word “shrill” will probably haunt HRC. What the fuck do you do with that? Address crowds with pillow talk husky whisper voice?

        • NancyP

Yes, all women who act decisive in “a man’s field” are “shrill”. “Shrill” is shorthand for “shut up woman, and know your place, which is obeying a man”.

      • NancyP

        It’s all about misogyny.

Americans won’t elect a woman president for another 20 or more years – at least. American men are sufficiently insecure about their manhood to oppose any female Commander-in-Chief. A lot of American women obediently parrot the opinions of their fathers, husbands, and pastors, and can be far more misogynistic than the men. There’s the resentment – why should she get to do real work after she got married and had a child? I would bet that the first woman president will be single and childless (ie, “honorary man”), either a soft-butch lesbian or a mainstream ordinary-looking straight woman.

I remember 1992, and HRC was absolutely pillaried for being young, educated, and having something sensible to say. Yes, the “I am not planning to bale cookies, I will be working on issues” comment really outraged a lot of guys and a lot of stay at home, largely uneducated women. Never mind, Chelsea was school age at the time and not needing or wanting constant supervision. HRC was accused of 1. being a lesbian 2. sleeping with many men 3. frigid 4. witchcraft 5. murdering people 6. mannish. All of these assertions continued unabated for 24 years! Note that 5 of 6 accusations are equivalent to “being a woman who has stepped out of her place”. The benghaziemail BS is just frosting on the cake.

        • safari

During the early Clinton years, Walmart banned a t-shirt that said “Someday a woman will be president” for violating its “family values”.

          • moebym

That said, she can’t quite match the depth or breadth of experience that HRC has. And she has also made some powerful enemies in the moneyed class, which will try to ruin her in any way possible.

I wish I could find the recent article where a woman talked about doing the high level party rounds in New York and meeting, I believe it was a Russian woman who was married to a wealthy man. There seems to be little to any genuine warmth between them, certainly when compared to the Obamas who fucking radiate love and respect for each other. • Cuberly

It’s what I’ve thought for a long long time.

Having recently been a care giver for my mother, she was experiencing slow mental deterioration via dementia. Along with other health issues.

The first thing my mother did as her health deteriorated was to seek out my brother or myself for guidance in situations where she wasn’t sure what to think or do. And, unfortunately she became frustrated and sometimes said things that were socially unacceptable or just plain vicious. She wanted to feel like she was still in control, totally understandable, when things weren’t quite in control it’s rather easy to get very very angry.

I honestly think the media was astonishingly derelict in their duties in vetting Trump’s suitability. They dropped the ball when it came to the gravity of running for office.

Trump should have been written off after 3 months of his primary campaign.

Is it any surprise Trump wants his closest family being part of his cabinet? He knows he’s fucked and he distrusts what he can’t comprehend.

        • NancyP

        • stuckinthewoods

Your experience with your mother is similar the what I’m seeing in a friend. When short term memory is gone and they can’t remember doing something, to them it must have been done by someone else. It isn’t in memory, they deny being the agent. I think we do see this in Trump, continually denying he said something or didn’t mean that when presented with evidence. Clearly he has more support than you and your brother (or I) could give, but I think he acts like my friend did earlier. Irascible. Reagan had it for a while and I think Trump is relying on his odious children to become his Nancy.

Um, my understanding is Rudy doesn’t have a twitter account. There were a LOT of fake ones though.

      • Sam_Handwich

that was my understanding too … why i’m confused that a trump camp contractor would tweet that.

Remember that after the first shockwave of the blast emanating from the bomb, provided you survive the burning light and radiation, there is a second blast from behind as the rapid heating of the air at ground zero rises quickly.

O/T Wow, you really couldn’t make this shit up. Apparently Trump had a 10 minute phone conversation with Theresa May in Britain and told her to let him know if she was planning on coming to the US sometime and asked her to pass on his best wishes to the Queen. I’m surprised we didn’t all hear the sound of hundreds of British bureaucrats shitting themselves uncontrollably. He might just as said “give Liz a high-five the next time you two have a Kiki.”

  • Phillip in L.A.

Read that as “made his most dried-out foray into foreign policy” (which I guess is also true)

  • Piet

Draining the swamp, eh? Right. And the folks who voted for him will never connect the dots. If he gives them the chance they’ll vote for him again. Even if they’re living on roadkill and bugs, sheltering under corrugated sheet metal, and wearing rags. Because he tells it like it is. He shoots from the hip. He’s not afraid to stand up to the elites in Washington. Now, where did I put that ult-snark symbol?

Indeed, Mitch McConnell has helped to poison the well as much as anyone.
    An evil and vile man.

It’s a start of resuming bargaing to politics while removing ego-driven mad men:
      http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/nov/15/republicans-seek-to-bring-back-earmarks-after-past/

    • Lazycrockett

Oh you know that everything Obama suggested and wanted passed and was stopped by Congress, will now pass like gang busters and the GOP will take credit for it. As Liberals we must remember the last 8 years and remind all of those that stood in our way.

      • Ninja0980

Some of the stuff.. maybe not.
Many of the far right guys hate McConnell too and so does their base.
Be funny to see him when members of his party tell him to go to hell and he won’t have anyone to blame.

        • Lazycrockett

I’m mostly talking economic and stimulus packages. Infrastructure will get a big boost. Plus the tax cuts on the rich will produce a boost for a bit before the eventual collapse once again of the economy. That should happen after the midterms.

          • Ninja0980

Sad to say but you are right.
And the media will give him a pass.

      • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

No environmental laws will pass. And the parts of the ACA that guarantee coverage will be gutted. The Republicans also want to dismantle Medicare and replace it with vouchers and privitize Social Security like 401K.

So, no I don’t think any positive progress will happen.

  • Here is who sat at the Russia Today (the mouthpiece of the Kremlin financed by the Russian Government) dinner in December 2015 with Vladimir Putin — Michael Flynn and Green Party’s own Jill Stein. Now that Turkey has made nice-nice with Russia, Mr Putin will be very please with Flynn’s appointment.

      • BobSF_94117

Erdogan is very quickly dismantling Turkish democracy. He’s doing in months what it took Putin years to do (it helps if there’s a “coup” and you can just arrest everybody you want to).

        • Ninja0980

Indeed, it is scary how fast he has destroyed the only Democracy in the Middle East, it truly is.

        • William

If a quarter or even ten percent of Americans registered, it would make the registry useless. (This is merely my guesstimate. I also think it would separate those who actually give a shit from those who just make mouth noises.) I think that all those Trump-voting people who whine about being considered bigots and racists and are all so “but I wuv all ob God’s peoples!” should be challenged to sign up to protect their fellow citizens and if they don’t, they should bopped over the head over and over again for the rest of their lives.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Considering that Jared Kushner is pretty much linked to Trump’s administration that’s chock full of Nazi-wannabes, I can’t help but wonder what Jewish people in general think of him since IIRC, he’s an Orthodox Jew and Ivanka converted to marry him.

      • There is no one “Jewish” view in the USA politically. Most according to polls voted Democratic for Hillary by a wide margin. I don’t think the Kushner’s actually look that Orthodox though —

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I know there is a wide spectrum of Jewish identity and politics, but you would think most would look askance at playing ball with people not much different than the KKK.

          • Check the ADL, what they say about it. That is the voice of the vast majority of the community when it comes to fighting discrimination — not only anti semitism but racism and homophobia and anti-islamic activities. • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’ve been slowly going back to reading articles other places but I still mostly listen to music at work. I can’t handle actual radio talk about Donald Trump becoming Pres. Considering they constantly blather about being the party of Lincoln, this is what LIncoln had to say about them:

    http://www.salon.com/2016/11/17/sore-winner-syndrome-why-are-donald-trumps-supporters-still-so-angry-abraham-lincoln-understood/

The best description of this phenomenon comes from Abraham Lincoln in his famous address at New York’s Cooper Union in 1860. Trying to explain how impossible it was to deal with the Southern slave states using normal democratic means, he asked, “What will it take to satisfy them?”

This, and this only: cease to call slavery wrong, and join them in calling it right. And this must be done thoroughly — done in acts as well as in words. Silence will not be tolerated — we must place ourselves avowedly with them. Senator Douglas’ new sedition law must be enacted and enforced, suppressing all declarations that slavery is wrong, whether made in politics, in presses, in pulpits, or in private. We must arrest and return their fugitive slaves with greedy pleasure. We must pull down our Free State constitutions. The whole atmosphere must be disinfected from all taint of opposition to slavery, before they will cease to believe that all their troubles proceed from us.

He thinks the parties are gone. The thinks the country is divided between two groups: “centrist nationalists” and “socialists”.

I guess (way less than actual) universal health care isn’t something he was raised to believe was a Democratic goal, the last unfulfilled dream of the New Deal.
