NSA Director Michael Rogers: Never Doubt That The Election Was Sabotaged By A Foreign Government

The Week reports:

Adm. Michael Rogers, head of the National Security Agency and the U.S. Cyber Command, spoke at a Wall Street Journal forum on Tuesday, and much of the focus of his discussion with WSJ Deputy Editor-in-Chief Rebecca Blumenstein was about joining government and business to fight the scourge of cyber crime. The number of hackers is “so large and diverse” that it’s difficult to identify the perpetrators, he said, but roughly two-thirds of them are criminals looking to earn money from stealing personal information, and the remaining third are state-sponsored hackers.

But Blumenstein also asked Rogers about WikiLeaks, and the slow and steady leak of emails stolen from Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s gmail account. “There shouldn’t be any doubts in anybody’s mind: This was not something that was done casually, this was not something that was done by chance, this was not a target that was selected purely arbitrarily,” Rogers said. “This was a conscious effort by a nation state to attempt to achieve a specific effect.”

  • Blake Jordan

One of the many, many reasons why the presidency should be given to Sec. Clinton by the Electoral College voters… or the Election Day (not the campaigning) run again, without the rigging!!!

    • gaymex1

That would restore a great deal of my faith in the process.

    • GayOldLady

As much as I’d love for that to be the outcome, it will not happen. We’re stuck with Trump until he pushes one too many alarms then we may see impeachment or maybe he’ll just resign, regardless we’ll be left with Pence.

      • Jeffrey

I know its only a fantasy, but its all Ive got right now lol

        • GayOldLady

We all have to keep hope alive.

      • Joe in PA

Stop being reasonable dammit, my daydream/fantasy is finding massive voter fraud, Trump/Pence/Ghooliani/and especially KellyAnne put in jail! Oh, and the Trump kids.

      • IamM

Legally the electoral college can elect any of I think the top five people running for president.

Don’t get your hopes up too high, it’s never not elected the candidate who won the most electoral votes before and obviously this year they are mostly Republicans and if they fail to give anyone a majority it would fall to the House and or the Senate*, but it’s possible that enough of them will exercise their discretion and step up to reject Trump and Pence as unfit the way the GOP, the press, and the voters should have.

*President and VP are two separate ballots. The Senate gets to choose the VP if the EC can’t decide on one while the House would elect the president in the EC doesn’t.

        • swimboy

The electoral college can only select from the top three candidates based on electoral votes, not popular vote. Since none of the third-party candidates got any electoral votes, the EC can only vote for Trump or Clinton.

That was why they made such a huge deal about McMullin in Utah. He had a chance to pick up Utah’s EV’s and be a contender in a contested EC.

          • IamM

Ah, thanks. I knew they couldn’t elect just anybody.

        • 1876. The Compromise of 1877 allowed 20 disputed electoral votes to go to Hayes, instead of Tilden, in return for the ending of the military occupation of the South.

          • IamM

Okay. Never in the last 138 years.

      • Acronym Jim

Unless Pence pulls an Agnew, then we may get a modern day analogy to a Ford.

    • Craig S

The concern about Trump will be nothing compared to the reality of ever having to say President Pence.

      • Blake Jordan

Exactly, that is why the administration must be scrapped (the electoral college suggestion), not just Donnie impeached leaving LGBTQ+s and women stuck with a man that hates them so much!!!

      • My mom who is a good judge of character says that Pence is one of the biggest Xtian religious fanatics she has ever seen in her life. She says that Catholic people prolly should be afraid of him also he is that evangelical extreme.

        • NancyP

Well, yes. He is also rumored to be dumb as a stump, more so than Indiana’s other dumb-as-a-stump VP, Dan Quayle.

      • pj

he really has a hard on for gay people. and not in a good way. beware.

    • bill weber

She has conceded. You can stop pimping now.

      • IamM

It’s not about her. She’s just the best option out of the few people the electoral college is allowed to choose between.

    • If, between now and December 19th, the Trump transition shapes up as really scary enough to enough of those GOP electors, this could be a possibility. It would not be the first time that something remotely like this happened – look at 1876, though in that scenario, there were 20 disputed electoral votes that got “awarded” to the Republican in a deal that ensured to the Democrats an end to the military occupation of the Southern States.

Perhaps, if enough irregularities are found, someone (with standing) might want to dispute the awarding of electors in key states to lead into a similar scenario. Or if enough Trump electors can be swayed, the outcome could be changed.

The chances of this happening are slim, right now, but Trump does have until December 19th to show enough of his hand to do the necessary scaring . . .

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal. Damn that librul media! /s

  • Tom

Someone please mash up this with Trumps 3rd debate comments denying Russian involvement and play it on a damn loop.

    • Chucktech

Tell it to the fucking FBI.

  • Michael R

I’d like to see a system where I can confirm my vote , not just have it disappear into a machine or in the mail , I’ve been told this can be done with mail in ballots .

    • djcoastermark

Mail in ballots in Fla are trackable (?) on the county you are registered in on the elections office website. It will tell you when your ballot was received and if it was accepted. Accepted meaning your signature on the envelope matches the signature on file.

      • Chucktech

That’s how I tracked my ballot. I know it was received and accepted.

      • The Return of Traxley

But what does that guarantee if the margin of victory is large enough to deny a recount?

What happens if someone fails to include those filed signatures?

        • djcoastermark

As I under stand, if your signature does not match what is on file you are notified and given the chance to update your signature to allow the ballot to be cast.

          • The Return of Traxley

But what if that all happens and the wind up in a shredder or some fascist enters a second stack of altered ballots?

I know, I’m really going off the cliff here.

    • The_Wretched

I’m less confident of the machines than I am the mailed votes.

    • kelven
  • Chucktech

Let’s get real. There were plenty of domestic actors who are also responsible for this outcome, not the least of which is the MSM who hand their thumb on the scale, the egregious voter suppression in all the usual places, our (certainly now) morbid fascination with every goddam poll that crops up, and the coup de grace of 44% of eligible voters bothering to vote.

    • lymis

Comey counts as a domestic actor who skewed the election.

    • The Return of Traxley

All the nails. You hit them all.

…and not just by the Russians. We did a lot of this to ourselves.

    • Blake Jordan

But with the rethuglicans in power, will they bother!?
They know Russia helped them steal the election, so they are grateful!!!

  • Uncle Mark

Sure, NOW you guys are talking about Russia’s interference in our election. We didn’t hear much from y’all about Trump’s dedicated server connection to the Russian Alfa bank server; in fact y’all were rather dismissive of that for some reason, but made much ado about Weiner’s devices possible harboring Hillary’s emails, including the alleged mystery one…tying Hillary to Benghazi terrorism.

So much for you people doing your job in protecting this nation from threats both domestic and foreign. So why are you still employed?

    • Ursa de la courecel

Right there with you, my friend. Boy no one wanted to say “Russia” some months back. Not in Serious circles. Goodness no.

      How quickly they forget, Blanche.

      • Uncle Mark

Let’s face it; the village idiots that voted for Trump (much like their leader) couldn’t find the Ukraine, Crimea, Baltic States, Aleppo, or even Benghazi on a map…let alone even care about those nations/cities. Fox & Frauds were having orgasms over how strong and commanding Putin was, while claiming that Obama was wearing mom-jeans (when they weren’t calling Obama a dictator. Curious contradiction that.) Why should we be surprised that these lemmings wouldn’t be alarmed at the first hint of Russian interference in our elections?

        • Half of them can’t find Chicago on a map of the USA. Seriously. Not in the first 10 minutes unless there is yuge lettering that says the name of the city.

Because as horrible as it sounds, paranoid me thinks there’s an element of our national security administration, from the CIA to the NSA to the FBI to Homeland Security to the military who have sympathetic ties to Russia. Their motivation: cash and the promise of greater power should Russia seize control of parts of Europe.

There’s too much here to be coincidental. And it’s terrifying me. We could be facing a coup, a dictatorship as a satellite Russian state, or an outright nuclear war.

      • Uncle Mark

How quickly and rudely dismissive you are, yet you bring nothing to the table on this. Clearly it didn’t matter to you that the Russians were more than happy to work with Assange to hurt only ONE side of the election. You didn’t find it odd that Trump was bloviating about bombing this enemy or strongarming some other threats…yet took a very soft & gentle approach in dealing with Russia…even contradicting his running mate on how to handle them in a debate. While in the midst of all this had a pro-Russian campaign manager, as well as a dedicated connection to the Russian Alfa bank. How nice that none of this concerns you

Your last sentence is just what a friend said bleakly this morning.

  • The alt right part of the Trump movement (Gen Mike Kelly/Bannon) knows this, and are smirking now — although they won’t admit it publically, they welcome Russia’s help. The sad truth is that the alt right sees an Authoritarian Russia under a violently homophobic and socially regressive President Putin as an ally and a role model for the USA. Communist Bolshevik Russia was the enemy (Bolshevik to the alt right is code for Jewish). Orthodox Holy Russia the enemy of decadent Western values and defender of islamic expansionism is their ally. Putin’s iron fist approach to Chechnyan separatism (islamic) is music to their ears. Putin’s comic masculinity is something they admire. David Duke has claimed that Russia is one of the last bastions of the Aryan white race. The mainstream Republican Party is still wary of Russia.

    • TimCA

Democracy and pluralism are signs of weakness. Our next president will try to fix these obvious shortcomings.

A few days back JMG posted a story about that white supremacist (I don’t remember his name) calling for a “new white homeland.” His list of acceptable Europeans include Germans, Slavs, and Latins. (emphasis mine) At the time, I thought it strange that he include Slavs and others in his list, but now I see the connection. I’m becoming more and more convinced with each revelation that Trump’s entire campaign was orchestrated by the Neo-Nazi supremacists from the very beginning.

Posh to me are Eaton or Harrow boys, and they don’t go to Warwick either — they go to Oxbridge or St. Andrews – places like that. They do not seem “middle class” in the traditional English sense either. Middle class in England (I am not sure about Scotland) means that your grandfather (you need two generations) may have been a high level vicar, professor, or doctor — certainly not a merchant. Their accents and demeanor make them plain old working class English boys — nothing fancy. Yes, and they are very white — but I find them quite handsome and they remind me of my straight friends in London who were great fun, very handsome, and very pro LGBT rights — and much more comfortable (and physical) with their gay friends like myself.

        • LookielouE1707

No contradiction there. If I jam a nail into your tire, but you successfully drive away because you had run-flat tires, it’s still true that I sabotaged your car. If you keep going til you’re driving on the rim, but you stay on the road, it’s still true that I sabotaged your car. And if your steering is wobbly because you’re driving on the rim, but it’s also wobbly because you suck as a driver, and you run into the ditch … I still sabotaged you, whether it’s clear or not that you would have wound up in the ditch without my help.

Similary your claim that people need to settle on “one scapegoat” is idiotic reductionism – most disasters have many fathers. I haven’t seen enough of your writing to be able to say whether you ought to be smarter than that or not.

I’ve been in full out survival mode since last Tuesday. I thought that I hadn’t felt this gutted and angry since 9/11 with Dubya and shoot-‘em-in-the-face Dick smirking and loping around like hyenas over corpses and smoldering economies, but I think that this feels even worse. This feels bad. Yawning and empty and hopeless. Like the lonely, hunted, and segregated 80’s when the fetid talons of AIDS tore life away from friends and left me and one other as the only survivors in a pack of at least a dozen. Back when too few cared and too many could not judge and be cruel fast enough.

In one night, we’ve been relegated from the shining promise that was President Obama (even though the Republicans made sure that our president was never to realize his full potential) to us now timidly scoffing and powerlessly raging, raging against the dying light. We’re all targets now for the swastika-striped, NRA-dildoing, Jesus-screeching, PTL-clubbing, P.T. Barnum targets. We’re now pushed back to the back seat and I just want to get off the bus.

I’m bitter. I’m tired. Tired of this same shit replaying over and over again. We take the world and make it better for a few years after it’s been neglected, pillaged, and abused and then some fucking monster of humanity rips it out of our hands to molest it, rape away its dignity, and unload jizz on its face for a few years before kicking it back to us all whimpering and slick with their goo to console and fix.

I’m feeling more and more like this country is a sham and a prison and a hopelessly insane mindfuck, much like Christianity felt when I was a teenager and I had to dump it or check out permanently. Thankfully, I finally realized that God was a monster made in man’s image and Jesus was a fantasy. The slight glimmers of hope just always result in a swift kick in face. I wish that I could just extricate myself from this country as cleanly as I pulled out of sock-puppet Jesus, but, unlike Osiris savior myth version 4.0 this country actual has physicality.

I get that Fox news has permanently warped massive swathes of voters. I get that Republicans have been gerrymandering and rigging and intimidating over a long arch of history. But jesus fuck, did you have to be so complacent over the years, Democrats? If… “IF” this election was legitimately won, I think I’m… or hell, what does it matter? Even if it wasn’t won legitimately there’s not a damn thing that’ll be done. I just hope that I can survive. I just hope that I have enough money and time to get to Canada or someplace sane when they do something awful to cower us in our place, solidify their authority, and assure that no one dare defy them and their “patriotic” flag-pinned bullshit. I just hope that we all survive.
