Mitch McConnell Reelected Senate Majority Leader

The Associated Press reports:

McConnell is widely popular among Republicans and his election was by acclimation on Wednesday. The 74-year-old is considered a clever tactician who mixes conservative leanings with a willingness to cut bipartisan deals when necessary. McConnell was Senate minority leader for eight years before becoming majority leader when the GOP took control in 2015.

He enraged Democrats by refusing to let the Senate consider President Barack Obama’s nomination of federal judge Merrick Garland to fill a Supreme Court vacancy last February. That paid dividends when Trump was elected president. McConnell distanced himself from Trump during the campaign, but says he’s ready to work with him.

Republicans will have a 52-48 edge in the Senate. Democrats will have some leverage because on important issues, they’ll likely force Republicans to garner 60 votes to end filibusters. It won’t always be possible for Schumer to keep Senate Democrats together because many will seek re-election in two years from GOP-leaning states.

Now that the Republicans actually have to govern instead of obstruct this will be very interesting

    • Oikos

That is what I am afraid of.

      • DaddyRay

Now we get to obstruct and criticize

    • CanuckDon

That’s the one positive. It’s they who are now on the defensive rather than the offensive. Scrutinize and criticize the pure hell out of them (which will take awhile I know)

I hate Mitch McConnell and have always suspected him of being a repressed closet queen. Does anyone think it’s a coincidence that Dennis Hastert was elected Speaker of the House? Clearly, Republican power brokers had dirt on him and blackmailed him into being Speaker so they could manipulate him any way they wanted. I’ve always suspected the same thing about McConnell.

That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it!

    • The Return of Traxley

      OH GOD NO

    • Nausea

Check Mitch McConnell’s discharge papers from the service. He was discharged for an “unknown” reason which has been redacted from paperwork. Those that have investigated feel the reason might have been what you suspect….

also CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NY) elected Sentate Minority Leader.

The first thing they should negotiate is a joint call on the Electoral College to deny Trump the presidency and install a government of national unity under a president acceptable to both parties. Who that would be, I don’t know. Colin Powell comes to mind. So does Biden.

  • The Return of Traxley

And all the turtles everywhere just went, “Fuck.”

  • Sam_Handwich

    also…

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on Wednesday claimed his party’s top spot
on the Appropriations Committee, a powerful perch for Senate Democrats’
most senior member despite its diminished influence in the age of lean
    federal spending.

Leahy’s move clears the way for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to become the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee

I wondered about that too. When has the old dirtbag ever been willing to compromise? Frankly I can’t stand McConnell.

We need to filibuster any Supreme Court nominee. Completely obstruct the business of the Senate.

    • Xuuths

No, we should fully review any suggested SCOTUS nominee, not just obstruct. That’s the GOP racket.

      • Tor

Review them, then reject them on grounds of incompetence.
