Tony Perkins Applauds Australia For Killing Marriage Plebiscite (Which We Actually Wanted Them To Do)

Upon the urging of LGBT groups, yesterday the Australian Senate voted to formally kill a non-binding national plebiscite on same-sex marriage. We’ve known for weeks that the plebiscite was never going to happen, but Tony Perkins is calling the vote a victory for White Jesus. Via press release:

So much for the worldwide movement to redefine marriage! Remember when liberals tried to paint people who believe in natural marriage as backwards and out-of-touch? Of course you do — they’re still trying. Well, they’ll have a tougher time of it now after the global pushback. A month after tens of thousands marched against same-sex marriage in France, Australia is protesting in an even more important way: legislatively.

After 14 long months of debate, the Aussies defeated a push to legalize the idea earlier today. Despite the usual LGBT propaganda, the Australian Senate voted down the effort to hold a referendum on same-sex marriage 33-29, dealing an enormous blow to the liberals Down Under. “If the Labor Party wants to block [it] then there will not be a vote on same-sex for this term, and I anticipate that will probably be our policy heading into another term of government,” said leader Andrew Broad.

Unfortunately for Americans, our country would have almost certainly had the same result if voters had the benefit of representative government on the issue! Instead, the Left pressed the courts to decide the issue until ultimately, five unelected justices did. Over time, liberals — with the help of the media — managed to create this phony impression of support — even when the ballot boxes and state laws told a different story. As House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) admitted this spring, “Legislatively, we couldn’t really succeed, but from the courts… that victory has been won.”

The Left finally owned up to the fact that they had to force the redefinition of marriage on the country illegitimately. And that proves a powerful point: The reason same-sex marriage is legal in America is not because the people or their elected officials demanded it. It’s because the courts forced it on an unwilling country — finding in the invisible ink of the Constitution a “right” to destroy the most stable institution in the history of civilization. Congratulations to Australia for deciding the issue the way it was intended: democratically!

From ABC Australia:

The Federal Opposition, joined by an increasing number of gay and lesbian groups, argued it would result in divisive debate that would have hurt vulnerable members of the community. It also attacked the proposed $170 million price tag for the plebiscite.

Greens senator Rachel Siewert said the gay and lesbian community had lobbied strongly for the plebiscite bill to be defeated. “I’ve lost count of the number of my LGBTIQ friends who have urged and begged us not to support this plebiscite.”

Chair of Australian Marriage Equality Alex Greenwich said supporters of same sex marriage should refocus efforts on a direct vote in Parliament to change the Marriage Act. “We know that a majority of Australians, indeed a majority of parliamentarians, support this reform.” “We hope that we can all work together to finally get this through our Parliament.”

Kneel with me Toni and let us pray.

    The Lord Trump’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in Trump Tower,

    Sociopathic Liar be thy Art.

    Thy Alt-Rights come.

Thy will be done in media,

as it is in real life.

Give us this day our dose of Lies.

    And forgive us our Believers,

As we never forgive them who bring forth the truth against us.

And lead us not into a black church,

But deliver us from the Access Hollywood tape.

For thine is the Kingdom of Gold,

The Power of Gold, and the Glory of Gold,

    Forever and Ever.

You can put away the white robes and the pointy hat now, Tony PerKKKins.

Your boy is going down in flames tonight, you slimy, lying, hypocritical excuse for a man.

  • bkmn

Tony will take credit for Hillary winning, if he thinks it will bring him more money.

    • Reality.Bites

Oh he does indeed deserve some of the credit for her winning.

Imagine if a sane, pro-choice, pro-marriage candidate somehow became the Republican nominee? It would have been extremely difficult for her to win.

  • well of course Tony Perkins would lie about the nature of the vote and what it means…his side is desperate for a “win” and so even a fake one will do.

The truth is that the Plebiscite was terrible, especially the way they did it, and we wanted it voted down. now it time to allow a free vote on it…and it would pass.

Tony Knows that his followers will not be up on the facts so he lies to make his case look better.

  • Treant

OT: That was fun. An hour and twenty minutes to vote due to some address screw-ups and me having to move from line to line to line, but I did eventually get to cast my vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton.

I was voter #359 in the eventually-correct line.

  • ByronK

The most stable institution in the history of civilization? Really, Tony? You do realize Donald is trying to make history for the third time right? I don’t think all the lights on your Christmas tree are working…

    • David in Palm Springs

Perhaps we should ask Tony’s spokeswhore quadruply-married Kim Davis to tell us about the stable institution of marriage?

      • D. J.

Only if she agrees to talk to Jeebus while handling rattlesnakes. Maybe she can juggle them or something. You have to do something for the spotlights.

  • TampaDink

May Toni be Duggared by a Dingo.

  • delk

It’s because the courts forced it on an unwilling country — like the way a guy would force his fingers into his four-year-old sister’s vagina.

  • If the issue went to a free vote it would pass. so while Tony pretends that the legislature would vote it down the opposite is true.

secondly same sex marriage won the last 4 times it was on the Ballot in the US. he is citing old votes over the current reality of public support.

  • Barry William Teske

The HATE Extremists like to brag, that our weakness is in letting a despicable view, not acceptable in civil society, be repeated over and over until it doesn’t seem wrong anymore.

Exhibit One : Tony KKK Perkins.

HATE has it’s followers, but Tony KKK Perkins considers himself a leader.

  • SoCalGal20

    Shut up, Tony.

As an antidote watch this very sweet video from the Clinton campaign. There was a gay marriage proposal at the Philly rally on Nov. 5. This is the story. (I sent this video to Joe so he might post it).

    • skyweaver

So beautiful! THanks so much for sharing this

    • Joe in PA

To quote Hillary in the clip: “Oh my god, that is so adorable.”

      Stronger together. Nice.

  • Todd Allis

Wait, is he this clueless about the plebiscite, or is he just trying to spin it? I would believe either.

    • I would also believe either. If he did not follow it and just read headlines about a public vote for same sex marriage being voted down he could take that as the legislature not being in support. But given how long this has been kicking around I am more inclined to believe that he knows exactly what happened and is lying about it.

      • I’ll take “Lying” for a thousand, Alex.

Don’t ever kid yourself — Perkins knows exactly what’s going on and has no compunctions about lying about it.

        • Reality.Bites

And it doesn’t hurt that the RWNJs are called Liberals.

  • Herald

Lying about a win by the marriage equality forces in Australia, so typically perkkkins. But his base will be thrilled and that means $ in perkkins pocket, which is the whole point after all.

  • Listen Bitch, when you’re actively trying to elect neo-Nazi here in America, you lose ground to talk about morality here, let alone talk about morality in Australia.

  • StraightGrandmother

Ha-Ha Tony, typically you don’t have a clue.
Soon there will be rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth when Civil Marriage is passed legislatively in Australia. We are gonna WIN!
You know Evan Wolfson is consulting in Australia, right? What a great man.

  • Lazycrockett

Since I don’t give a shit bout Tony, here’s my EC 2016 prediction.

I am seriously expecting a huge Latino/Hispanic turn out in Hillary’s favor.

    • TampaDink

Your prediction looks like what I’ve been dreaming of….along with a Democratic controlled Senate.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

And house. If you gonna dream, dream bigly !

      Will NE-2 be a tie?

      • Lazycrockett

No its red it just gets lost in the sea of. I’m still iffy bout Ohio but last night seemed to confirm that the AA vote in Franklin and Cuyahoga was now at the same rate as 2012.

        • Bruno

You have it greyed out actually, which means tRump is short one vote.

    • At this rate, if the GOP keeps alienating Latino and Black voters, that TX-38 may turn blue within a decade or so.

    • Lena

I didn’t realize DC had 3 electoral votes?

      • Reality.Bites

Neither did I, but I checked and it does, thanks to a 1961 Constitutional amendment.

        • Lena

Ja, you are right. 23rd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution entitles DC to three electoral votes in the election of the president and the vice president.

Am I getting too old now? I remember the days when the homophobes were all about putting gay rights up for a vote and subjecting fellow citizens to the dictatorship of the majority. Now suddenly plebiscites are bad because the likely outcome isn’t what he wants it to be.

This is just like in Britain now, where all the “brexit” folks who were talking about the sovereignty of parliament are now opposed to parliament voting on important issues. All the people who ranted about the need for the UK courts to be supreme are now up in arms over a court decision they don’t like.

    • boatboy_srq

It says a lot when the people who once demanded popular approval of some LGBT-specific item are now running g from the potential popular vote against them.

As for Brexit, protest votes have a knack of haunting those who cast them. Remember President Nader and how well his administration handled all the difficulties it encountered?

    • Robert Pierce

Now that our High Court has ruled that Parliament must have a say in triggering A50, the Supreme Court will probably uphold the decision in December according to some QC’s I’ve spoken to, in spite of Theresa “Mayhem’s” confidence that it will be overturned. If the Supreme court decides for a Parliamentary vote, what what will do is remove the chance of hardliners getting a hard Brexit, total severance from the EU without any trade deal. Remain MPs and moderate Leave MPs who want single market won’t let May get away with it this time. There’s no way they’d vote for a hard Brexit irreparably damaging the country, jobs and security.

As for the Australian plebiscite being shot down, it was the right decision. Parliament should do what its supposed to do, legislate and pass it, which it will do as the UK’s did with equal overwhelming support.

  • SoCalGal20

Hedwig election special in L.A.!!!! (Btw, the place was packed on Sat. night when I saw it). This is an excellent deal.

  • Mike C

It’s supposed to be Tony’s BIG day to Make America Great and he’s issuing press releases about Australia. Such confidence!

    • Bruno

Just about NO ONE really believes tRump will win at this point. Doesn’t mean he won’t in and of itself, though. Polls have gotten way too close for comfort lately.

    • Halou

Tomorrow’s headline: He was never involved in election campaigning, 501(c) and all that… 40 years from now Tony’s kids will be like: He was always a firm supporter of gay rights, now please support our campaign to deny the rights of X, Y, and Z minorities.

It’s what these people did after they failed to defend segregation and racism became unpopular.

      • Ernest Endevor

        Particularly Tony’s gay kids.

      • Reality.Bites

Although we now know from Trump it’s never been unpopular.

  • Ninja0980

As Joe pointed out, none of us wanted this so how is it a victory?

    • barrixines

It’s really infuriating isn’t it when this was a complete slapdown of the Perkins-alikes in the Australian parliament.

    • kirtanloorii

The truth is that most anti-LGBT people don’t understand what happened and Tony is trying to convince them that their money is being put to good use and that they should send more.

  • djcoastermark

Here’s a silly relief update that I have been reporting on for the past couple of weeks. It doesn’t look like the saga of the wild Rhesus monkey will be determined today. Wildlife officials though they got the little guy with a tranq dart, but he fooled them. It is being reported he escaped and is still on the loose. Polls say he will head farther into St Pete where conditions are friendly for him as lots of people accidentally leave bananas out in their backyards. Go monkey Go ! Last sighting is the black spot on the map.

    • Reality.Bites

      It’s no accident.

They leave the bananas in hopes madcap adventures will ensue when would-be burglars attempt to break in and slip.

      • djcoastermark

Hopefully with a hidden camera to catch all the hilarities. But on the serious side, because of those “forgotten” bananas and apples, the last monkey now named Cornelius, escaped capture for over 3 years. It was a hoot following his journey. He is now at a wildlife sanctuary and a newly proud Papa. I hope this little guy has such a happy ending.

He’s like Trump. They know their audience, which hasn’t much interest/grasp of either complexity or nuance.

    • boatboy_srq

Not much of a hold on history, either. Else all Perkins’ demands for the Voice Of The People* to be heard would now be held against him.

Tony, dear. We don’t want to stop people from marrying. You can get ‘natural married’ as much as you like. Just leave the rest of us out of it.

    • david fairfield

Right. I picture a nudist colony.

      • david fairfield

        That’s one big book!

  • lukefromcanada

I am not sure he understands what really happened, he sees a headline vote down ssm and goes with it. He does tend to have tunnel vision. A bit of context would go a long way but then he would not always look like an idiot and thus his failure would be far less entertaining for us

  • Gerry Fisher

    >Over time, liberals — with the help of the media — managed to create this phony impression of support

I wonder where “marriage equality” polls these days. LGBT folks in the military? I’d guess very highly.

    • Baltimatt

It took 30 years after Loving v. Virginia imposed interracial marriage on 16 states before a majority of the population approved of black/white marriage.

    • david fairfield

Exactly correct. Answer is they no longer publish polls because they are the opposite of what they want us to see. Plus throw in some fact checking and, well… if we do get a poll from Tony frothing at the mouth Perkins it will be a lonely poll from Mississippi or the like.

  • Baltimatt

Tony seems to forget voters in three states approved same-sex marriage in 2012, while voters in Minnesota voted down a constitutional ban on SSM that same year and changed the composition of the legislature so that SSM would be approved the following year.

  • olandp

Right Tonette, it would be voted down like in Washington state, Maine, Maryland, and Minnesota.

  • david fairfield

Tony, we’re not trying to paint you as backward and out of touch. We don’t put any effort in you or your ilk. Whatever picture you paint is the picture YOU paint.

Does anyone actually make it all the way through his insane rambling posts? He has no idea how to make a point, but instead writes a twenty page commentary trying to convince everyone that his opinion is one of a sound person rather than a screaming banshee. And as always GO FUCK YOURSELF!

  • Cboulder

The reason we had to go through the courts was because denying people access to a civil institution requires reasoning beyond mere animus! Fuck Tony, I knew you were hateful, but it wasn’t clear yet if you were a complete fucking moron or just an asshole

  • Gianni

According to Tony, taking a case to the courts and getting a decision that he doesn’t like, makes the method “illegitimate”. Tony, WTF is the matter with you? (beside the fact that your mind is thoroughly warped from all that biblical interpretation bullshit)
