NEW YORK: Hundreds Wait In Hour-Long Line To Place “I Voted” Stickers On Grave Of Susan B. Anthony

JMG reader Bess tips us that New Yorkers are waiting in a hour-long line at the Rochester gravesite of legendary suffragette Susan B. Anthony so that they can place their “I Voted” sticker on her tombstone. From New York Magazine:

On November 8, 1872, Susan B. Anthony was arrested for illegally casting a ballot in the presidential election. More than a century later, single women are the nation’s most potent political force. Anthony’s grave in Rochester, New York, is a popular destination for women who want to honor her memory by doing their civic duty, and according to the Democrat & Chronicle, this year the city’s mayor is making it even easier to do so.

Mt. Hope Cemetery, where Anthony is buried, usually closes at 5:30 p.m., but on Election Day, it’ll be open until voting ends. “Visiting Susan B. Anthony’s gravesite has become an Election Day rite of passage for many citizens,” Rochester’s mayor told the paper in a press release. “With this year’s historically significant election, it seems right to extend that opportunity until the polls close.”

Thanks, Bess. This is so dammed awesome

    • Bess Watts

My pleasure – so proud of my hometown. I plan on being in that line once I get off of work.

      • Marty Pavelka

Rochester here, too, Bess. I voted this morning and drove by the North entrance and there was a sea of cars, I tried to park in Highland Park but there were no spots anywhere! I work at URMC, so I’m planning on walking over there shortly. Closer to walk there, with all the traffic! Amazing. So proud of Rochester. 🙂

I hope Trump and the GOP will be firmly trounced by a landslide.

That is why I look with disdain with anyone who votes for Trump.
Including people in my own guild. (video game)

    • Todd20036

Did this jerk actually expect the waiter to vote for trump after a bigoted note like that?

Does he ever expect to be let back into that pub?

He will be welcome with wide open arms. All his and his party order will have the added special bonus sauce with no charge.

I’m so glad I don’t live in Texas any more. Still remember the junky car that slowed down as I was walking back from the train station in Irving full of rednecks screaming “Hey! The significant of this election and the historical implication is so understated amidst all the circus surrounding Trump.

  • Rebecca Gardner

    That’s so awesome!!!!!

Looking down at the entrance to my building. Polls are only open for 10 minutes now and I’m seeing the longest line I’ve ever seen in the 8 years I’ve lived here.

Women are the majority of the population, about fucking time we were represented. I cannot wait to say Madam President for the next four years.

    • Adam King

      Eight years!

      • lymis

Longer. Remember, that’s the courtesy title for life. She will be addressed socially as Madame President for the rest of her life.

  • Rex

What a great honor it would be to elect the first woman as commander-in-chief. Sometimes it takes a woman to fix what men have screwed up for the past centuries. We need the first female president to follow the first black president to show the world that we are progressing, to do otherwise would confirm the worst fears of the world.

    • Adam King

It says so much about the sincere inclusiveness of the Democratic Party. We don’t “tolerate” the other members of our coalition, we love and embrace them and raise them up.

    • Chucktech

While I have good feelings about today, the day is not over and America can still confirm the worst fears of the world.

      • Rex

I’m with you, I’m not going to get too comfortable until tomorrow.

        • Chucktech

          Well……. Let’s hope by 8:00 PM EST…

This is wonderful. I hope it gets reported & remembered. Reminds me of the joyful, tear-stained faces of African Americans eight years ago.

    • zhera

This has moved me to tears. What a beautiful sight!

    • Marty Pavelka

      Almost there!

  • Blake Jordan

O/T: Holy crap, NC GOP is going all out with their minority (African American) suppression antics!!!

    https://twitter.com/zengerle/status/796001455387869184

Edit: Clinton does not need NC to win, though the more states the better…
But the governorship and senate seat are the real concerns, as both races are close, and significant democratic voter suppression will effect those!!!

    • SoCalGal20

I’m shocked (not)! DOJ Civil Rights Division better be all over this.

She added that she didn’t know the cause of the malfunction.

I think it’s called voter suppression.

    • Bruno

Dems will be lucky to pull out that state given how widespread the voter suppression has been. Even though they WOULD win the state if there were none.

    • Chucktech

Clinton may not need NC to win, but we need McCrory and his HB2 deplorables to LOSE.

  • Gretchen Sharp Kidd

This is very cool…but I can’t help but think how much trouble it will be to scrape those stickers off her headstone.
    .

    • Randy Ellicott

Apparently the cemetery is good with this, they have everything ready to keep it cleaned up and restored. They made the decision to allow it and monitor it to avoid people being stupid. All is good!

      • Gretchen Sharp Kidd

That’s good to know. Stickers are such a pain. I’m glad I’m not in charge of that project!

        • Nasty Girl Brianna

I don’t think the “I voted” are as bad as regular stickers. I’ve never had a problem pulling them off after the election. They don’t seem to have as much adhesive backing and are designed to be temporary.

          • (((GC)))

Yeah, the “I Voted” stickers invariably fall off my jacket after an hour or two.

        • Randy Ellicott

I think they just realized that it was going to happen so might as well be helpful and be there to minimize any real damage, the stone should be fine for another 100 years or so, a little bit of goo-b-gone and all good!!

          • Gretchen Sharp Kidd

I’m glad the cemetery is supportive and making this possible. I, on the other hand, seem to have some deep- seated sticker-related trauma. I suspect those couple years as an elementary school librarian may bear some responsibility.

          • Randy Ellicott

            LOL i can see that!!!

      • Marty Pavelka

According to our local paper here in Rochester, they have extra boards in place to transfer stickers to so that the marker stone can be seen and isn’t damaged by too many. They’re doing a great job there.

    • sherman

LOL. That’s what I thought about too. Also if this headstone were in a Republicon controlled area, the police would be arresting people for desecrating a grave or something.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

With each “I voted” sticker added to Susan B. Anthony’s tombstone, Phyllis Schlafly spins over in her grave.

    • Oikos

Schlafly’s corpse needs to be disinterred and burned and then the earth salted where its ashes lay.

      • Snarkaholic

Yes…with KOSHER salt (because you KNOW that she wasn’t especially fond of “those people.”

    • bambinoitaliano

Someone made a mistake of putting her in a rotisserie instead of a coffin?

      • Robincho

The thought of Shoofly spit-roasted is unthinkable, which is why I’ll spend all of today trying desperately to unthink it…

        • TampaDink

Even more drinking than I planned will be required to unthink about that comment.

      • You spell it “mistake”, I spell it “justice.”

    • Earl

Is she really dead? Someone drove a steak thru her chest before they buried her, right?

Cool, she’s dead. I still want confirmation that they gave her the vampire treatment. Don’t want her zombie corpse running around.

      • Robincho

The steak won’t get her, but the bordelaise sauce will…

        • nipper

          Was it a Trump Steak?

      • Bomer

Stake through the heart, brick in the mouth, and bury her head down so she can’t crawl out.

    • lymis

Hook her up to a generator. Yet another way to harness petroleum free energy sources!

  • Rex

    This is truly inspiring.
There is hope for this country.

  • karen in kalifornia

Unfortunately, a rabid anti choice group which supports anti-chocie and anti-abortion female candidates (think the opposite of Emily’s List) has usurped Susan B’s name to use as there own claiming Susan B was anti-chocie, or as the group would claim prolife. Don’t be fooled.

    • marshlc

Taken in any kind of historical context, those terms are meaningless.

As a woman this is the most important election of my life. Not simply because I voted for the First Woman President, but because I voted to prevent my rights being taken from me by the psychopathic Trump/Pence ticket. I think women are going to come out en masse today and this election is going to be historic.

Live in Rochester and plan to go and put my sticker on too. Been to her gravesite in the cemetery along with many other famous people like Frederic Douglas, Amy and Issac Post, the Porter Family and many more. If you are ever up this way be sure to stop. The Mt Hope Cemetery has daily tours, just a little over an hour, in the warm season. It is also a great place to get married as well. It is worth the time to learn about the history of Rochester, NY and all the people that helped form this country.

      Aren’t we done yet?

  • Adam King

Why the hell is the camera in portrait mode? I swear.

    • Bad Tom

      Get used to it.

Camera designers elected to put in portrait mode because of consumer demand. Traditional cinematography had zero weight. We will see this more and more.

One day, people will say, “Why is that camera in landscape mode?”

      • (((GC)))

My pet peeve is the fancy blurred effects that many TV stations and sites use to fill in the extra space when a vertical (portrait) video is being shown in a traditional TV/video/ computer monitor “landscape” space. Either use a vertical space on the website, or go ahead and have the black bars. Don’t distract us with extra crap visual noise!

        • Chucktech

          Thank you!

    • (((GC)))

Because many people find their phones easier to hold vertically?

I’ve seen a few phones with a camera button in the traditional upper-right corner (in the “proper” landscape mode), but that’s rare.

Sticky adhesive on marble aside, this is a wonderful and still ongoing tribute to, and recognition of, Susan B. Anthony’s efforts – along with so many other suffragettes! I wonder what she would say about p***y-grabbing Don … probably just “Get out there and vote for Mrs. Hillary Rodham-Clinton!”

  • JoeMyGod

Holy cow, this clip has over three million views already.

  • Elsewhere1010

Saw this item this morning and started to cry. Susan B. Anthony’s fight for women’s suffrage took place over a hundred years ago and women’s fight for equality still goes on today. Civil rights are more than a lifelong issue, they’re a generational issue; and and some of us look at the strength and courage of the next generation, who may have different battles to fight, but they will still have to fight.

I like to think that somewhere Susan B.Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ida Wells, Emmeline Pankhurst, Sojourner Truth, and many other brave women are meeting up and smiling today.

  • KQCA

OMFG My born-again sister-in-law just said, “I don’t know what the big deal about Susan B Anthony is, all she ever did was sew the American flag.”

and yes, she’s a devout Trump supporter and Hilary-hater. Of course, she can’t state one fact to support either stance. Her country church pastor told his congregation how to vote. That’s all she’s got.

I won’t be “available” for a visit this Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I really would have loved to have taken my “I Voted” sticker to her grave because mine is in the shape of the state of Tennessee, which was the state that put a woman’s right to vote over the top. It’s one of the few good things my state has done in a long time.
