GOP Strategist Ana Navarro: Why I Voted For Hillary

“I didn’t want to write this. I avoided making a decision as long as I could. I schlepped my absentee ballot all over the country for almost four weeks. I would periodically take it out of the envelope, look at it, shake my head in disgust, and put it back in my suitcase. I had decided to write-in my mother as a symbolic protest vote against the Democratic and Republican nominees. I didn’t want to vote for either of them.

“I had hoped that a week before the election, Trump would be losing Florida by a large enough margin that my vote wouldn’t matter. But darn it, my home state is too close to call. Florida could be the decisive state (again) as to who ultimately becomes the next president of the United States. I thought back to the 2000 election, which was decided by 537 votes in Florida. I thought about how I would feel if the same thing happened in 2016. I thought and I thought and I thought….

“Then I cast my vote for Hillary Clinton. Let me rephrase that. I cast my vote against Donald Trump. I did it without joy or enthusiasm. I did it out of civic duty and love for our country. I voted against Donald Trump because I am an immigrant. [snip]

“We each have a right and a duty to make a personal choice based on those things that are most important to us, that we value most. My conscience compels me to do every little thing I can to make sure a bad person is not our next president. In America, we don’t choose our leaders through violence or armed insurrections. One vote is our right. One vote is our weapon. I am exercising mine against Donald Trump.” – CNN commentator and GOP strategist Ana Navarro. Hit the link for much more.

    Oh poor thing.

In past elections I’ve looked on the other party as the opponent. This time the other party is the enemy. That’s different and it scares me.

    • bkmn

That is the way the GOP has looked at Democrats for decades.

    • The_Wretched

With Trump attacking everything and his supporters rampant violence, it’s rational to feel threatened personally. That’s what an enemy does. M&M once complained that he wasn’t the asshole he ‘pretended’ to be. Guess what, the medium is the message. Trump can’t just dress up as an authoritarian demagogue, to appear to be one is to be one.

  • Good enough.

I remember elections going all the way back to 1968. Some elections were good years, most were bad.

2016 is different. Trump has no respect for our country, its citizens, our system of government or our elections. On a number of occasions, he’s “joked” about how we should just cancel this election and give him the Presidency. He never talks about working with Congress, except in terms of how they will obey him without question. When our nation’s military leaders said they would not obey orders to commit war crimes, including torture and the deliberate murders of innocents, Trump vowed he would force them to obey him.

I would gladly cast a vote for a Mitt Romney or John McCain over Trump. Based on what we know about Dubya, I’d have serious reservations…but again, I’d choose him over Trump.

Trump is insane. He WANTS to start a nuclear war and has said so publicly! He wants to imprison his political enemies, as well as more than 12 million undocumented (and more than a few documented) immigrants. He wants to outlaw Islam for starters…and would probably get around to other religions in time. He has said he wants to make dissent illegal.

But circling around to my earlier point: Trump has said elections are unnecessary. That he should just be GIVEN the Presidency of the United States. He says he alone can fix everything. Not even him and the GOP, just him. Based on his own public statements, there’s no real assurance he’d respect a four year term.

Hell, he’s said he won’t even respect this current election unless he wins.

There is, however, no doubt whatsoever Clinton would respect her term of office and the Constitutional limits on her authority. There would be elections in 2018 and 2020.

With Trump? There’s a far greater than zero percent chance he’d cancel them. Because he’s said elections are unnecessary.

Even if one is a Republican who disagrees vehemently with everything Clinton stands for, this one reason ought to be enough to want her in office. Because in 2018 and 2020 there will be elections again, at which time the opposition party — or, on the left, the Sanders supporters — can work to enact change.

    • Kelly Lape

The Constitution is stronger than Trump. Elections will continue whoever wins tomorrow.

What is at stake is the direction of our democracy. President’s are only as strong as their cabinets. Giuliani, Gingrich, Christi (if he stays out of jail) – none of these people belong at the head of any Federal Department.

      • I disagree. The Constitution is only as strong as the citizens who support it, otherwise it’s just a piece of paper with which Trump can wipe his dimpled, sclerotic ass. And right now, a sizable percentage of this country’s citizens — many of them heavily armed and all but ready for their arm-bands and red hats — don’t want a President but a dictator who will “fix everything.”

Put frankly, who the fuck do you think would stop Trump if he becomes President? Who would be able to overturn a national declaration of martial law, if President Trump orders it? The police? They WANT this. The FBI? They’d gladly become his American version of the Russian FSB. Congress or the Judiciary? Trump has already expressed his disdain for them.

Donald Trump has said on multiple occasions now he would respect the results of this election only if he wins it. Once he actually has power, who would be able ever to remove him?

        • Gustav2

Some old wise ass said it was “A republic, if you can keep it.”

          • I continue to be amazed by the naivete of those who think “It can’t happen here.”

It can, especially if people keep ascribing magical powers to a founding document which has, on many occasions in the past, been set aside in the name of fear and expediency.

          • Gustav2

Because the revere it like they do the Bible…and read it as often.

          • madknits

That wise old ass was Benjamin Franklin.

        • Kelly Lape

The United States Military is sworn to uphold and defend the US Constitution. That oath is not taken lightly and the idea of following illegal orders is not an option.

          • So you’re arguing there’ll be a military coup.

            Those never turn out well.

          • Kelly Lape

I’m arguing that Hillary will win, and any insurrection mounted by Trump supporters will be quickly dispersed by legal authority and force if necessary.

    • EweTaw

I go back to watching Margaret Truman (Harry’s daughter) on a game show where they blind folded her and tricked he into writing “I Like Ike” on a giant black board. It was 1951.The studio audience went wild. 1956 is a blur, Then Kennedy vs. Nixon. Still have vivid recollection of their first debate. The 1964 election was rather nasty. The ’68 election was a no brainer and much nastier because most Democrats did not want Humphrey on the Dem ticket. Sirhan Sirhan put a serious monkey wrench into that election and there is still no actual proof that he was the lone assassin of R. Kennedy. More bullets were found in the ceiling and walls of the hotel kitchen where the killing took place indicating others were involved. No one trusted the government in 68. Even Republicans had serious doubts about Nixon and his ultra right conservative past. (Remember, Eisenhower wanted to get rid of him and select someone more moderate for his second term.) Gerald Ford sort of slid into office and no one really forgave him for the Nixon pardon. Also, funny how VP Nelson Rockefeller being found dead in a hotel with his mistress was quickly swept under the rug at the time. That was a real knee slapper. Jimmy Carter was a given. Not much fear and loathing that first election, but he was such a micro manager and failed to work with the old guard GOP that he quickly lost favor, especially because of Iran Hostage crap. Reagan? I’d rather not remember those eight years. I voted six or seven times for Bill Clinton (in my imagination). That’s when the real evil and nastiness came to full bloom with the GOP. Apparently no one in the GOP ever had a blow job before and they were sure to make anyone who did get a BJ suffer. But I’ll go back to Eisenhower for the GOP convincing the country that there was a communist under every bed, spreading fear among the populace and not slapping Joe McCarthy’s butt and stopping all of the damage he did relentlessly commie hunting via the UnAmerican Activities crap. That was a source of serious damage to the Republic and democracy. And we get Trump as a direct result because of Roy Cohen being his mentor? Someone needs to pour gallons of holy water over Cohen’s grave just to make sure he’s really truly dead. πŸ™

      • Ray Taylor

I remember most of that. I took to drinking after 1961 so some of it was a blur.

      • Oh’behr

Thank you for mentioning Eisenhower and McCarthy. I didn’t realize Eisenhower’s later involvement with McCarthy until I read more now online. I knew about McCarthy’s witch hunt during the Truman’s Administration. As I said, not about Eisenhower with McCarthy.

        • EweTaw

Yeah. Eisenhower privately hated McCarthy but was too chickenshit to confront him. Lots of people suffered because of Ike’s inaction. Fortunately McCarthy became victim of the “Joe Must Go” voters (I remember my parents chanting that) , was eventually censured and died of alcoholism in 1957. He didn’t die soon enough.

I’d love this meme if it was punctuated, spelled and capitalized correctly.

I’ll admit it I like Novarro, though I disagree with a LOT of her politics.

She tore up the GOP sycophancy like no other talking head. So good, I’m glad for her article and glad she felt the need to put this out there.

  • PickyPecker
  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Ooooh, poor baby, you had to struggle so hard to decide that a man who over a year ago said many Mexicans were rapists and murderers is a bad choice? Your party loyalty trumps your common sense, your decency, your duty to your country?

You had to really wrestle with voting for a woman who has championed the rights of children and has stood up to 30 years of abuse and investigation and still wants to serve the country?

Glad you could finally stomach making the decision a day before the election, but could do with a bit less of the whining about what a sacrifice it is to vote for Hillary.

  • bmedle

Ana, could you, at least, consider going indie? I don’t think your politics are especially appropriate for our party, but you know how to rip your fellow Rethugs multiple new assholes. The “Pussy” incident on Lemon’s show was some of the best television I’ve ever seen.

Yeah, we feel so bad for your feelings, Scottie. It was your candidate.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

I’m sorry, but I am sick of people bad-mouthing Hillary. She is an astute politician not your bff.

    • Treant

      Tru dat.

“I don’t like her.” Well, hint, people, you don’t have to deal with her day to day. Which one do you think will run the country better, preferably without nuking an ally?

    • Silver Badger

To be honest, would many of us actually vote for our best friends?

      • Johnny Wyeknot

Mine wouldn’t let me. That’s why they remain best friends!

If true this is hilarious. His own internals have him down 2 in Florida:

    • Treant

+2 in NH? That’s certainly possible, but it seems unlikely…and does he even have a reliable pollster any longer after not paying the last one?

      • Michael Smith

Who knows? But that’s what Fox is reporting. He’s done if that Florida number is true.

      • EweTaw

Kellyanne has her own polling business. Maybe she’s providing that service among others as she serves the orange one. I wonder how many sets of knee pads she’s worn out?

Navarro is nothing more than another dim-bulb Rethugette who’s fine with all the misogyny, homophobia, and racism–as long as it’s not HER ethnic group. *snort*

    • MusicBear88

I agree, to a point, and no matter how grudgingly she did it, she still made the right choice this election!

Ann, maybe if you had any sense of what a president is required to do you would feel better about your vote.

I would love it if there was a mic in the hotel room after a Trump rally to see what he really says about the crowds that come out to see him.

    • Snarkaholic

“I wish those loooooosers would go home, so I could fire off this Cruz missle in peace…now, which one of you has Rosie O’Donnell’s address?”

  • Ross

It has been said about Republicans that they don’t understand anything unless it affects them personally.

    Navarro personifies this.

WHY did she not vote for Trump? Because she is an immigrant.

Navarro was OK with Trump being an admitted sexual predator, a world-class ass, and wholly unqualified for the job. Because none of this was about HER.

    Jesus fucking Christ.

    • Berdawn Hutchinson

I’m patiently waiting for one of Portman’s kids to come out as poor so that his policies will improve

    • ChrisInKansas

      1000 upvotes for you.

Actually Ana Navarro was pissed about Trump being a sexual predator too.

  • Blackfork

Whoa. Actually there is NO RIGHT TO VOTE in our Constitution anywhere. It is only a privilege. And if as you say, “My conscience compels me to do every little thing I can to make sure a bad person is not our next president. In America, we don’t choose our leaders through violence or armed insurrections…”, then how is it possible you couldn’t merely listen to this raging asshole named Trump and NOT come to the conclusion that he would be horrendous for our country and the world?

    • Sam_Handwich

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” 14th Amendment

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” 19th amendment

      • “The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.” 24th Amendment.

“The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.” 26th Amendment.

        • Canadian Observer

It’s time for another amendment – those who have been convicted of a criminal offense should not be stripped of their right to vote in perpetuity by state governments. Upon completion of their sentence and any subsequent conditions placed on them, their right to vote should be restored. Law and Order is fine, but there is a third leg to that tripod… Justice.

          • Ore Carmi

I don’t see why felons should be denied the right to vote even while they’re still serving their sentence.

    • Sorry, but you’re mistaken on this point. Four separate amendments deal with the right to vote.

It is far more than a mere privilege. The right to vote is the basis of our democratic republic and if it is only a privilege, this means any local or state government can suspend it at whim. Frankly, the near automatic denial of voting privileges to convicted felons — especially those who have served their time and are freed — is itself Constitutionally questionable.

      • Blackfork

Ah, you’re right. My bad, I was seriously misinformed–by someone I thought had a far better background on that issue.

        • Honest mistake. You’re right in one regard: The Constitution itself doesn’t include the right to vote, just the Amendments, which is why they were needed — and why we will need still more in order to guarantee access to the vote itself. In truth, something like a national Voting Rights Act would be better served by an amendment.

And compared to 2014 and 2016, it wasn’t even one of the bigger issues this time around.

By 2020, people might just forget about it.

      • Cuberly

I’d say the other GOP primary candidates were pretty adamant about repealing it. But yeah, Dahnald sort of distracted from that talking-point. He just says he has a better solution, zero details provided of course.

        • Carl

Yeah, that’s what I mean. Once we got to the general, there was lip service to “repealing the disaster and replacing it with something great”…. but it was nowhere near the threats of death panels, and barely any talk about it’s effects of employment and the economy. I’m not sure it even came up in the debates.

          • Cuberly

It did, I believe it was the second debate. Trump just yada yada’d…disahstah…yada yada. Hillz mentioned that it needs work & warned about repealing it.

While I’m glad Ms. Navarro cast her vote “against Donald Trump,” I would like to reminder her that the 2000 election was decided by five Supreme Court justices.

  • greenmanTN

I had never heard of Ana Navarro before this election, but she was amazing in her TV appearances about “pussygate.”

    • FAEN

I’ve seen her plenty of times on Bill Maher. Drives me crazy that she votes for the anti immigrant, anti everything party while she’s an immigrant.

  • FAEN

That you even had to think about a protest vote speaks volumes Ms Navarro. The most qualified person EVER to run for POTUS versus a xenophobic, homophobic, Islamaphobic, pathological liar and you actually thought of writing in your mother? Really?

I’d also like to know how you can still identify with a party that attacks immigrants at every given opportunity. Shame on you.

  • j.martindale

Well, you are to be congratulated for putting country before party. If you were consistent about those values, you would NEVER vote Republican. o/t but with yesterday’s Comey statement increasing Clinton’s chances to win the presidency, the stock market is up 325 points!

  • TKW

Finally a sane Republican! Vote her into office in some capacity. She is like a shot penicillin into a festering wound.

  • Robert Conner

Yes, THIS is what it’s come to. Not voting for some raging psycho douchbag is a harrowing decision for which this shitnozzle “strategist” expects to be applauded. Pretty sure she voted for other GOP obstructionist candidates.

    • Treant

I muttered, “So you want a prize and a party?”

Honestly, some pundits, am I right?

She just NOW figured out that Trump is a bad person?! Where the hell has she been for the past year?
…and if she WEREN’T an immigrant, then she’d vote for Trump?
    #RepublicanDumbass

    • DrRobY

She has been very vocal about her dislike about Trump, delivering some of the most scathing take downs of Heir Cheeto. I always have popcorn handy when she’s on CNN with Scottie Nell Hughes.

    • houstonray

She has been against Trump from day one. She has had some of the most epic rants against him on CNN and other networks.

  • Belthazar
  • TheManicMechanic

Enjoy the death threats and doxxing from your old gang, honey.

  • TampaZeke

…when they came for the homosexuals, I was ALL in, strategizing ways to turn homophobia into GOP votes (like in 2004). When they came for the transgender, I was ALL in finding ways to turn that fear into a paycheck from the GOP, but then they came for the Latinx people and made their hatred of women blatant so I suddenly became enraged at their bigotry and hatefulness and never miss an opportunity to express my disgust.

Did it go something like that?

    • Robert Conner

      Exactly like that.

  • Lakeview Bob

The stupid woman is still a repulsivecon. Fuck you c*nt.

  • David Walker

Maybe this GOP strategist shouldn’t expect a check anytime soon. Like ever.

  • Ore Carmi

    Impressive.

  • stanhope

This miserable chick needs to pop that hemorrhoid up her tush. She is the epitome of FOS.

  • houstonray

I see some negative comments about her. I have to reiterate, she has been against Trump from day one. She has had some of the most epic rants against him on CNN and other networks and will take down a Trump spokesman in a heartbeat. She is passionate. I respect her because she’s a Republican that you can still talk to and she’s willing to listen and will admit when she’s wrong on issues. I remember when Obama was first elected, she had tears in her eyes. I can’t fault her for her conviction of voting Republican but I can also applaud her when she sees that it’s wrong and that her party is moving way from her values.

She doesn’t share our views entirely but she’s willing to tell fellow Republicans why they need to vote against Trump.

Maybe this is the beginning of her seeing the other side. Baby steps.

    • Dinz6315

I don’t agree with Ana on much, but she has been fearless in calling out the Trumpsters’ bullshit. and I’ll take every Florida vote we can get. Thanks, Ana.

You girls have Got to control yourselves πŸ˜’
It’s a big deal for her to vote against the party she believes in.

    • Phillip in L.A.

If we controlled ourselves, what fun would that be?

  • andrew

IMO, no rational individual thinks that the choice between Hillary and Trump is a difficult one. As Fareed Sakaria said; “Donald Trump is a cancer on American Democracy.”

  • Phillip in L.A.

“I thought back to the 2000 election, which was decided by 537 votes in Florida.”

The 2000 US Election was decided by the US Supreme Court, in Bush v. Gore (2000) 531 U.S. 98, madam.

  • Guido Miller

I grew up in California. And I stopped even considering the GOP as a viable option after the 1994 gubernatorial contest between Kathleen Brown (Jerry Brown’s sister) and Pete Wilson. Wilson ran on an anti-immigrant platform. He vilified hard working people who just happened to have the audacity to look for a better life for their families in the US.

Twenty two years later, the Republican Party is a minority party in California. There are no Republicans on the ballot today in California for the US Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Boxer. There are no Republicans holding any major constitutional office in California. The GOP is only about 1/3rd of the legislature in California, seventy eight of the 120 seats in the legislature are held by Democrats.

My hope is that the extreme rhetoric of Donald Trump will lead to the same ratio in the next four years on the federal level. Maybe then we can get back to forging a future that benefits all. This Republican fascination with obstruction has to end and moderate Republicans need to see the damage their party is doing to our government.
