TEXAS: GOP Calls On State Supreme Court To Abolish Spousal Benefits For Houston’s Gay Employees

The Austin Statesman reports:

Ratcheting up pressure on the all-Republican Texas Supreme Court, Gov. Greg Abbott and other leading GOP officials Friday urged the court to revive a lawsuit that seeks to abolish employee benefits the city of Houston provides to married same-sex couples.

The case has become a rallying point for the state’s social conservatives, with the stakes growing larger now that Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton have added their voices by asking the court to adopt a limited legal interpretation of last year’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down the state’s ban on gay marriage.

“This court should take this opportunity to remind the lower courts that all disputes involving the right to same-sex marriage have not been resolved,” Abbott, Patrick and Paxton said in a friend-of-the-court brief.

Opponents of gay marriage have also peppered the court with dozens of emails urging justices to strike down the Houston benefits or face a voter backlash in future Republican primaries. Abbott and other opponents of gay marriage, however, face a difficult challenge.

The Texas Supreme Court has already rejected the Houston case in an 8-1 ruling, letting stand a lower-court decision that upheld the benefits. Gay-marriage opponents have asked the court to reconsider, but such requests are rarely granted.

There is one thing you can always count on – Greg Abbott will always be an asshole of the highest order.

    • And …

      2) He’ll never be able to walk again.

      • edrex

the man who can’t fuck challenges my marriage rights on the grounds of “procreation.”

        • Silver Badger

Well no wonder he is such an asshole. Not being able to fuck would make anybody grouchy.

          • McSwagg

Oh, he fucks plenty of people, just not sexually.

        • I think I’d pay good money to see a Supreme Court justice write some that in one of his or her opinions on this case.

  • Michael Smith

They think the Civil War ended in a draw.

      • J Ascher

It’s too bad Texas wasn’t more important at the time so it could have suffered its own Sherman’s March to the Sea. In this case, from Dallas to Houston.

      • Nychta

Some think the War of Northern Aggression never ended.

        • sword

My sister-in-law from South Carolina still calls it that. And called Jimmy Carter a stooge for the New York Jewish liberals.

    • Jamie_Johnson

You got their interest by starting out with that top-of-the-line marketing word “Free” but lost them with “civics.” They probably ran to their nearest Honda dealership looking for a free car at that point.

Not old enough to be my Daddy, so not sure about obeying, but I’m open to any suggestions he has.

      • another_steve

Please perfect your understanding of role-playing. Age has nothing to do with it.

If the right 21-year-old demanded obedience of me, I’d be there.

        • Rex

I’m fine with role-playing, and understand it quite well. I also understand that I’m much more convincing in the role of Daddy.

          • another_steve

            Oh. Okay.

Are you available a week from Saturday, at noon?

          • Rex

          • Jeffrey

You, sir, just got my attention.

Rex was talking to me, bitch.

          • Jeffrey

I’m 45 and I enjoy seeing who is really in charge when it comes down to it. I’ve dominated older and I used to have a 21year old who was preternaturally good at being the boss. To paraphrase Woody Allen “the cock wants what the cock wants.”

          • another_steve

Or to put it in other terms… “The gonads know no morality.”

      • I have gotten older men to obey. Granted that’s what they wanted, but still.

What I don’t understand is guys in their early 20s calling me a daddy and expecting me to fill that role. Especially since I am in my late 20s.

        • another_steve

I remember, with considerable fondness, my 20s. I was a twink back then and much in demand.

          Older men obeyed me, yes.

I still have the nice things they bought for me, way back when.

          • I used to get a little offended if an older guy bought me anything, but I never showed it to them. Kinda felt like I was being belittled. I’m over that now.

          • another_steve

Oh babe, enjoy these, your golden years.

Be kind to all suitors, to all whom you associate with, but enjoy these golden years.

If the man knows buying you something doesn’t mean buying you, consider it.

        • sfbob

You just described my 20’s. 26 with an 18-year-old boyfriend; 29 with a 21-year-old boyfriend. Now I’m 65 and my partner of 15 years is…not anywhere near 65 (he was 23 when we met).

      • gothambear

maybe he’s just your coach 😉

    • Silver Badger

I don’t obey very well. He will just have to get on his knees and beg.

      • another_steve

Why do you hate the gingers?

        • Silver Badger

Not at all. As long as they understand that every daddy has a grandpa. Me.

I sense that we elder-gays are coming into demand, hon. Age. Experience. Savvy in the way of…things.

            Market it, babe.

          • Silver Badger

Elder-gays of our generation are somewhat of a rarity, thus more valuable. I like to think of myself as a fine wine, well aged, gentle on the palette and packing a wallop.

          • another_steve

            You’re exciting me now, SB.

Yes. Somewhat of a rarity in this fuckin’ fuckin’ often cruel age of ours.

          • Robincho

I’d be happy to obey him. And I hope he’s a bottom.

      • another_steve

I would allow him to penetrate any bodily opening of mine that he could locate and that was in a semi-functioning condition.

If he would reciprocate in a like manner, all the better.

the idea of electing judges makes me itch

    • itsjoe618

It’s such a bonkers idea. How on earth did we end up electing judges like we do politicians?

    • Hank

Hell, when I voted early in FL, I had to decide whether to retain ALL the Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of FL. Most of the Justices were appointed, when Charlie Crist was in office. So, my choice was either to retain these judges OR allow the current Gov. Rick Scott, aka “Skeletor” to fill the spots of the rejected Justices. I chose to retain them.

The Democrats in the THIRD largest state by population have GOT to find worthwhile politicians for this Rethuglican controlled State Government!!!

      • Danieruw

I spent a couple hours this morning researching all the FL State Supreme Court and FL Second Appellate Court justices to see if any of them were crazy Repubs before I early voted. And it still ended up being very unclear. But I don’t want Rick “Voldemort” Scott to appoint others.

        • Hank

I wound up doing the same! After googling them all, there was one on the Supreme Court, that was described as being Scalia-like. Like yourself, I do NOT want Skeletor nominating Jackshit!!!

          • Brian Burleson

Just in case you are interested. it is for sale and has been for some time. They halved the price and still nothing. The land is probably worth at least as much as what they are asking for the place. Bad investment on that basket company’ part.

          • Chris Baker

Well, considering it was built when then company’s baskets were very trendy…. (they were sold at parties, like Tupperware. I actually have some that were/are my mom’s). I actually drove by the building a few years ago, and was glad to have seen it.

Remove the handles from the building — and the rivets and brass tag on the top band — and it will look like just a modern office building. I wonder why it isn’t selling. Is the location inconvenient? Maybe no one wants an office building in the middle of nowhere?

          • fuzzybits

We go to a nursery right across the road from that building.

There IS a thirsty evil afoot in our beloved country, the likes of which I have not seen in my seventy-two years. It frightens me more than the wars, segregation, or homophobia.

        Why?

Because it tramples the human spirit … the infinite and precious value of every creature … it is almost not remarkable that most animal abusers are also politically conservative. We will have destroyed something on the order of fifty percent of ALL plants and animal species on the earth in something like fifty years.

After Oklahoma’s “Day of Prayer for Oil,” I fully expect the oil derrick to replace the Cross in their churches.

I have tried alternative spiritualities after the Church abandoned me after fifty years of faithful service when I became seriously ill. I wonder if I have the strength within myself to withstand this tsunami of hatred from the Reich.

This is neither new nor complicated, therefore I conclude the court should tell the Republicans to butt out of things that are none of their business, as the US constitution makes abundantly clear, and grow up.

    • david fairfield

Exactly. It’s not same sex marriage, it’s marriage. Period. End of story. Drop dead!

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

The truly loathsome part of all this is the singular fact that this is being done out of spiteful hatred and nothing more. There’s no policy issue or revenue concern here, it’s all about harming people for the sake of harming them.

TEXAS: GOP Calls On State Supreme Court To Abolish Spousal Benefits For Houston’s Gay Employees

Another wingnut state official who doesn’t understand the Constitution. They should be subject to penalties for frivolous court cases.

  • Mark

    Law suit.

  • StraightGrandmother

I don’t remember the exact language but the Obergefelll ruling said not only marriage but all the benefits of marriage.

    • William

      Married is married is married.

  • EdmondWherever

“This court should take this opportunity to remind the lower courts that all disputes involving the right to same-sex marriage have not been resolved,” Abbott, Patrick and Paxton said in a friend-of-the-court brief.

Because you’re not letting it resolve, asshole!

  • Michael R

Can Texas save money by not paying Gov. Greg Abbott and his closest allies ?

  • Tiger Quinn

    Both parties are the same!

  • Pip

But wait… I thought that the GOP didn’t believe in Supreme Courts…

  • LovesIrony

only reason to do this is because you’re fucking bigoted shits.

  • Jude Newton

This is what I am worried about. Trump wins. Gets bored. Steps aside, Pence takes over. Then we are fucked.

Every time I think Clinton has it in the bag, some new shit hits the fan. Bill with the Foundation. Those damn emails.

I just hope the millennials get out & pull the rug from under Trump. Really, that’s the only hope right now.

    • stuckinthewoods

It is a stressful time. It has the tension of last year when we were sweating the SSM decision from SCOTUS, but that turned out well. And the odds on this turning out well are far better. Breathe in deep…. I know, I feel it too.

      • Jude Newton

Man, I hope so. So tired of this shit.

  • Octoberfurst

What is it with these pricks that they always have to go out of their way to try to deny gay people simple human rights? How “Christian” of them.

    • Bj Lincoln

They hate us. They really hate the fact they were forced to marry us. They do not want us to have the same safe and secure lives they have. They will do anything and everything they can to make our lives as hard and miserable as they can for as long as they can. All because their holy book says so.

      • Octoberfurst

You’re absolutely right! As much as they blather on with their “Love the sinner, hate the sin” mantra they sure seem to hate the “sinner” too. I’m straight but it drives me crazy to see how far these loons will go to make gay people’s lives miserable. I tell these cretins to get a life when they start their nonsense about “protecting marriage” and promoting “God’s will”. And you’re right in that they will never, never stop because their Bybull tells them that gays are icky. Let’s just hope they eventually go extinct.

      • PeterC

When are they going to follow their “good book” about their lives and how to live them?

  • John Ruff

Oh look! More domestic terrorism against gays in TX. All gays, and all minorities, really should take themselves and their tax dollars to a better state. One that won’t terrorize them.

    • Bj Lincoln

Moving to another state is easier said than done unfortunately.

      • William

Tell me about it. Right before my sister moved to Oregon, she told me that I have to stay here until one of our parents dies.

  • DuaneBidoux

No Abott, the questions surrounding gay marriage HAVE all been resolved: they are equal before the law to all other marriages.

  • Bj Lincoln

    What a bunch of dickheads!

  • CottonBlimp

Imagine that you thought this was the most important issue to resolve in America. Not poverty, or corruption, crime, healthcare, business issues, expanding civil rights, or any of the myriad of other genuine problems in America and the world.

No, the biggest issue your state faces is that gay people get benefits for their partners just like straight couples get.

I can’t even put myself in the shoes of people who think this way. I don’t know which is greater; their evilness or their stupidity.

    • david fairfield

I agree wholeheartedly. I always process conflict by walking a mile in the other persons shoes. But I can’t even do that in this case. This is very simply a spiteful and mean spirited move from a narrow minded bigot.

      • McSwagg

        Spiteful = Gov. Greg Abbott
Mean Spirited = Atty Gen. Bill Paxton
Narrow Minded Bigot = Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick

        • david fairfield

          Yes. Yes. Yes.

        • david fairfield

          Ken, but yes.

          • McSwagg

            Oooopps, your right.

  • NancyP

Easy way to fix this, Mr. Abbott and your fellow Repugnants. Make ALL spousal benefits (including your own) illegal in TX. That would stand up in court.

  • Robert Conner

Abbott should stop worrying about Houston’s spousal benefits and ask Jesus to get him out of his wheelchair. Although maybe Jesus actually likes it that Abbott’s a paraplegic.

    • Tiger Quinn

Kind of a gross comment. I’m not a big fan of joking about people’s disability. The man is inhuman and I loathe him, but a tree fell on him and it wasn’t Jesus.

      • Robert Conner

Tiger, the Lord has a plan for everyone and everything. He sees all and manages all the details…”not a sparrow falls, blah, blah, blah” according to the gospel of Matthew. Or do you suppose that some Christian(s) didn’t tell Abbott that his injury and disability was God’s test and part of a loving God’s plan? Which is more gross, mocking Abbott’s half-baked bullshit or telling grief-stricken parents their child died of leukemia because God willed it? I think your sympathies are misplaced.

  • D. J.

As an experiment, let them do a test with Abbott’s, Patrick’s & Paxton’s benefits first.

    • Stev84

They’re all so rich that it doesn’t matter to them

  • Rusty Redfield
  • Bob Conti

And they think this would pass constitutional muster… how?

  • fuzzybits

Fucking haters miserable in their own lives and want to unleash it on everyone else.

  • Tiger Quinn

I like to share stuff like this with my Black Lives Matters friend when she’s telling me yet again how people of color have it worse than anyone in the country.

    • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

Because black people can’t also be LGBT?

      http://www.nbjc.org/issues

      • Tiger Quinn

Yes. That’s what I wrote. Why, you can look at my comment right now and read those exact words. Correct?

    Sons of bitches

  • Celloman G

Governor, please go fuck yourself with a cactus. Sideways.

    • Duck

If I were to feel particularly nasty, I would point out that he wouldn’t feel it…

      • Celloman G

Understood, but the damage would STILL be done.

Their “Friend of the Court” brief would be more aptly titled “Enemy of the People.”

      Amicus Curiae = Inimicus Populi

  • pleasebereasonable

Fuck you asshole. You can drop those bennies when you shit can those for straight folks too.

  • Franciscan

I have to ask why these politicos are asking the Texas Supreme Court NOW to reverse itself if it already ruled on the question (or, refused to rule, leaving the lower court decision in place). Which one (ones) of these guys is running for reelection?

  • marshlc

The thing that makes me nuts about this kind of thing is that it’s so damned mean spirited, and that’s all it is. It doesn’t change anything, probably doesn’t even save any money, because those big benefits packages work better when there are more people in them anyway. Nobody will stop being married, nobody will stop loving who they love, nobody will stop being gay, because of this.

All it would do is make the lives of a few people harder. What kind of person puts time and effort and money into making the lives of people they don’t even know harder?

the simple answer seems to be “A bad person”.

    • rusty57

“What kind of person puts time and effort and money into making the lives of people they don’t even know harder?”

I’m going to go with a loving christian.

  • Rt1583

How long is it going to take for the conservative party of the U.S. to realize that they are always on the losing side of history?
    They lost against slavery.
    They lost against civil rights.
    They lost against SSM.

    • They also lost keeping women from the vote.

I actually hope the Texas Supreme Court hears the case. I love a good comedy show. Why should Alabama have all the fun?

  • Raising_Rlyeh

The SCOTUS ruled and these bitches lost. There is no conceivable reason that a married pair of breeders gets benefits but not a l/g married couple. Fuck Texas.

  • Richard

We can expect the same thing if tRump gets in the white house. The alt-right bigots will rule and we’ll all be screwed. Voting matters! Every vote counts.
    VOTE BLUE !

All that’s wrong with Greg Abbott is that a tree hasn’t fallen on his top half.

  • Joe Krumbach

Can this guy seriously go fu*k himself?
In 200 years his future family will look at him like someone fighting for the South during the Civil War and they will be embarrassed.
One of them might even be a Democrat, a Socialist, or a gay dude with four kids where he and his husband combined their DNA and implanted it into their hispanic lesbian, surrogate.
    🙂
