Democrats Celebrate LGBT History Month

Just in from the Democratic National Committee:

“As LGBT History Month begins, we have so much progress to celebrate. From the Stonewall uprising to the many victories during the Obama presidency–including ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the Supreme Court wins that enacted marriage equality–our nation has made enormous strides. That progress would not be possible without the historic pioneers we honor this month, like Bayard Rustin, Audre Lord, Harvey Milk, and Sylvia Rivera.

“We also celebrate fearless contemporary leaders like Sarah McBride, who made history with us as the first transgender speaker at a major party’s political convention; Daniel Hernandez Jr., who acted to help save the life of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords; Mark Bingham, one of the United flight 93 heroes; Staff Sergeant Eric Alva, awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery in Iraq; as well as Jim Obergefell, Edie Windsor and the countless plaintiffs who helped make sure that love is the law of the land.

“At the same time, we remember the names and faces of tragedy – those whose deaths continue to move us into action. Matthew Shepard. Gwen Araujo. Sakia Gunn. Angie Zapata. Brandon Teena. Tyler Clementi. Billy Lucas. The victims of attacks on Upstairs Lounge and Pulse Nightclub. The 600,000 Americans taken by the HIV/AIDS epidemic of whom many were LGBT men and women. Their stories continue to inspire more members and allies of the LGBT community to stand up for what is right, even in the face of discrimination, bigotry and violence.

“The Democratic Party stands with the LGBT community in that fight, and we have much more to accomplish together. In some states, conservative law makers continue to push for so-called ‘religious freedom’ laws, and anti-transgender bathroom bills, which threaten to legalize discrimination against members of the LGBT community. Democrats will continue to fight those laws, and any laws aimed at turning back the clock. It is still possible in many places to get married to the love of your life on Saturday, and be fired on Monday for doing so–that’s why Democrats won’t stop fighting to pass the Equality Act. Our Democratic platform stands fiercely for the full equality of LGBT Americans and for protecting our LGBT youth.

“When we recognize and celebrate the rich contributions that LGBT Americans have made throughout our history, we are a stronger nation. If we hope to build on the progress of the last seven years, we must elect Hillary Clinton and Democrats up and down the ballot, across the country.”

Good thing both parties are exactly the same.

I blocked him too. He doesn’t even offer any viewpoints. It’s “all politicians are corrupt. If trump brings back camps then so will Hillary. Vote for Chelsea Manning”

          He’s a Trumpanzee who doesn’t even realize he’s a Trumpanzee

          • Oikos

I unblock him periodically to toy with him but always make sure to tell him that failure to entertain mandates blocking. He has a major temper tantrum after being renamed ‘This user is blocked.’

I suspect you have a very overinflated opinion of yourself but can’t figure out why. You’ll believe anything right wingers tell you.

I prefer Sam Adams description of those easily duped cowards like you: ““If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

What a wonderfully detailed start to LGBT History month!
Nothing like this would ever be announced from a Republican White House.

    • PickyPecker

      Candidate Handwich!!!

      • DumbHairyApe

I’m not sure Handwich is our man. It appears he may have defaulted on some businesses back in 1995 and declared a personal loss of $915.

        • safari

          … Canadian dollars.

          • DumbHairyApe

Hey, whatever happened to his opponent, Jalepeño Business? I really miss their political sparring.

          • DaddyRay

Jalepeño Business needs to have an October surprise reappearance

          • Sam_Handwich

  • Rebecca Gardner

This is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If you’re a survivor tweet with the hashtag #ThisIsDV @NationalDVAM

    https://twitter.com/BikerBecca/status/782010063091146752

    • hi! i don’t tweet, but i was beaten this month! yeah! druggies suck; don’t be anywhere around them if you can avoid it. i tried! i really did. so yeah. be aware. and don’t be on drugs, yourself, if you can help it. and don’t believe “the authorities.” wow, do they lie and not help. this is my contribution to National DVAM. it’s real, very very real. some people here know about it, i am not lying.

i really want to move to Canada. i hear they have real services and health care there. clearly, we do not in this country, if my experience is indicative.

      • Rebecca Gardner

“i really want to move to Canada. i hear they have real services and health care there. clearly, we do not in this country, if my experience is indicative.”

You hit the nail on the head. No fucking justice in this country. Especially if you’re a woman. Don’t get me started on the complete lack of access to health care without bankruptcy.

        • 8 hours. i spent 8 fucking hours sitting on a gurney this week. one nurse came by. a doctor came by for all of literally 3 minutes, flashed a thing in my eye, and then? all they wanted to do was send me home with drugs. i don’t do drugs. i asked for more help, and yeah, vagina.

there is no help in this country unless you are a rich white man. that is nothing but the honest truth. i feel like shooting a rich, white man. b/c i know i’d get actual medical care in prison, better than i am right now. suck it up, ladies. this is exactly what happened to me when i was married to a man, almost 20 years ago, and he tried to kill me. nope. there. is. nothing. for us.

i don’t even know why i bother to pay taxes, anymore.

          • Friday

Hang in there, Chicago. (btw, speaking of care, got anyone to talk to? At least some self-care about the trauma of it might be well-advised. It’s really worth it.)

    • Friday

Not on Twitter, either, are you OK, Rebecca?

      • Rebecca Gardner

I finally escaped my abuser in on 11/5/2005, the night he was finally arrested and the night he nearly killed me. As for my neck injury. Ugh! so much pain. I’m calling my doctor again tomorrow.

        • Friday

Oh, different thing or the old injury? I’ve ended up in bad situations, though never got beat up, if only cause of certain training. Happens way too much, though.

I remember there was great controversy on the right because the elephant’s stars were the devil’s pentagrams. I seem to remember the gays were to blame for the graphic design. (Yes, this was a conversation online.)

  • DumbHairyApe

Huh? I thought June was our month? It’s October? Because of National Coming Out Day?

    I’m so confused.

    • safari

June is pride month. October is history month. Our agenda is to slowly fill the calendar with reasons to celebrate.

      • DaddyRay

We need to take over January next, it is such a dull dreary month – you know we can make it fabulous

        • Acronym Jim

It would be a nice antidote to the kitsch of xmas.

        • DumbHairyApe

YOU, Sir, are again 100% correct!

        • Clive Johnson

Perhaps that could be the Agenda Month.

        • EweTaw

International Gay Vacation month. Go some place nice with a friend.

        • DumbHairyApe

December’s gotta be on the list cuz nothing’s “gayer than Christmas”.

      • DumbHairyApe

Oh thank you. Titles are confusing for dumb, hairy apes. I couldn’t get past the LGBTQ.

      • Henry Auvil

The Gay Agenda is busy busy busy!

  • DumbHairyApe

(My husband is making home-made cinnamon rolls for breakfast. The kind that end up being like 3″ tall. Anyone wanna come over??? I should have him ice them in rainbow colors.)

    • Treant

      Who’s for dessert?

      • Todd20036

        Slut! I’m so proud!

  • DumbHairyApe

Do we have a mascot or spokesperson for LBGTQ History Month?

    • DaddyRay

I nominate Ambrosia Starling, the drag queen who helped take down Roy Moore

  • Acronym Jim

With Halloween occurring this month, wasn’t it already an LGBT Month? Or is Halloween LGBT Squared Day?

    • EweTaw

Halloween is a sacred LGBY high holiday. BTW: Merry Roshoshona. Go have some apple slices drizzled in honey.

      • Acronym Jim

Y? That’s a new one for me. Does it focus on gossipy Jewish lesbians?

        • EweTaw

          Just a Freudian typo.

        • popebuck1

Yenta Pride! We’re here, we’re queer, did you SEE who she’s been out with?!

  • aagold76 .

shouldn’t we have this in June- with all the Pride celebrations???

    • EweTaw

It’s exactly because there are so many PRIDE celebrations that LGBTQRP history month is in October. There’s no more room in June.

  • DaddyRay

Been there. Done that. I’ll wait for the movie

    • CatApostrophe

My husband’s been talking about it all morning. The last thing he told me was that it’s gonna be a few years of watching and waiting and more research to see what’s going on, but, hey, optimism in the meantime!

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh this just gets better and better.

  • Lazycrockett

I have to admit I have been really impressed with how the DNC and Hillary has stepped up and fully embraced us. It’s kinda overwhelming.

    • Friday

Seemed a long time coming, but that’s been pretty darn solid.

  • rednekokie

We have made for strides for freedom in the past 8 years under Obama than in all the years of Republican government since the time of Lincoln.
I lost my brother to AIDS during the years of the Reagan denouncement — and have never voted for a Rethuglican again. And won’t — ever. They are a party of criminals, hateful people, bigots, and downright meanness.

  • Amazing progress has been made and it is very rewarding to see and look back on. at the same time there is still much to be done and for to many people being gay is still something that they need to hide or that leads to them being subjected to harassment or discrimination or worse. A big thank you to everyone who has helped along the way and still works today to move us forward. A big thanks to the Democrats as well for having a platform and a candidate who will move us forward on protections for LGBT people both here and also around the world.

    • Tom Ato

Well said Bill. After so many years of slow progress, the rate of change accelerated so quickly. Very gratifying to have the support.

  • Ninja0980

Both parties are the same though right?

    • bzrd

exactly the same, they both celebrate New Years Eve

  • LesbianTippingHabits

Yes, celebrate LGBTQ History Month in October: tip generously for good service.

Remember, tips are good karma. And karma never lies. Thank you.
