Howard Dean Says Sorry-Not-Sorry For Alleging That Donald Trump Used Cocaine Before Debate [VIDEO]

Talking Points Memo reports:

Howard Dean was largely unapologetic Friday morning when he returned to MSNBC, where he is a paid contributor, to defend his allegations that Donald Trump may have been high on cocaine during the first presidential debate.

“People who stay up at 3:00 and 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning tweeting about sex tapes, these are not normal people,” Dean said, referring to Trump’s tweets early Friday targeting former Miss Universe Alicia Machado.

“There is something the matter with him, and I don’t know what it is,” Dean continued. “Let me say this: I would be very willing to apologize. Not to Donald Trump, but I don’t think using innuendo is a good thing. But the problem is much greater than that.”

Dean said he would rather “the media of this country” apologize for giving Trump “$2 billion worth of free time.” He wondered why he didn’t hear “the pompous hand-wringing editorials on Bloomberg News” when Trump surrogates spread bogus rumors about Hillary Clinton having Parkinson’s Disease.

My Sant’Gria is at the ready.

      • greenmanTN

Is that Sangria? After having the best sangria in Spain (Toledo), I kept trying to replicate it but couldn’t do it. I finally figured it the secret- it takes some really cheap-ass Spanish wine. Bad wine makes good sangria.

fat greasy tamale would make me happier than is reasonable.

    I Love Him….

    • Soren456

My favorite of them all. But he seems mostly to appear on Lawrence O’Donnell, which is unfortunate.

  • bkmn
  • another_steve

Will be interesting to see whether MSNBC cans him.

He called the mainstream media out. Accused them of being the Trump enablers that they are.

  • bkmn

So the Trump surrogates can go on and on to all the different media sources saying Hillary is sick and the media does no honest reporting about it.

    • another_steve

Not only that, but the MSM pander to the lunacy by interviewing medical experts to discuss Hillary’s “condition.”

Why haven’t they interviewed medical professionals in the area of drug abuse to determine whether, in their practices, they’ve witnessed “snorting and sniffling” on the part of cocaine users — similar to what we all witnessed during the debate?

      • Chucktech

Because Trump lays golden ratings eggs and The Media doesn’t want to risk chasing it away.

        • another_steve

          Exactly, Chuck. Perfectly put.

I can ignore and forgive this current presidential cycle as a hiccup in the history of American politics, but the way the television MSM have handled it is truly truly sad and disconcerting.

I fear for the future of TV news.

In France, the owner of a newspaper has no control over its content. That is the sole prerogative of the editor, who is more or less permanently ensconced in his position and can’t be fired.

The French clearly take the news media a lot more seriously than do Americans.

      Always an upvote for Joan!

      • I always felt that Joan’s problem was not having any gay friends. She clearly needed them. We get her. Love her. And would support her. Alas, no. It’s the 60s and that’s not really a thing yet.

        • popebuck1

I dunno – Joan’s apartment was right in the heart of Greenwich Village, and Stonewall happened just a stone’s throw away. Joan was a hip lady – I have no doubt she eventually had gay friends. I’ll bet if the series had continued to follow her into the ’70s, she would have been the most popular “fairy princess” in the Village!

  • Dramphooey

“Michele Obama said ‘when they go low we go high.'” Well, Trump obviously was high so we went low!

  • Blake Jordan

If drumpf does not apologize for his heinous lies, why should Dean apologize for stating the probable truth!?!?!?

    • Rex

      Trump NEVER apologizes for anything.

      • RoFaWh

He (Drumpf, that is) probably thinks that’s a sign of strength.

It isn’t. It’s a sign of extreme insecurity.

    • Bruno

MSNBC: another network gone to shit.

      • another_steve

I can’t stand watching what’s happened to Rachel Maddow’s segment. MSNBC’s focus groups probably suggested to them that she needed to dumb it down a bit, so her segment is essentially taking the same sentence (e.g., “We have a really really important breaking story to tell you about” or “X actually said this in 2005”) and repeating it 100 times in 12 different ways.

Over and over, the same sentence/thought — repeated 100 times.

And that poor Steve Kornacki. They practically have him in a clown’s outfit throwing balloons at his electoral map for the entertainment of the masses.

        All very sad.

        • Bruno

Yeah I’m sure it’s starting to creep into the primetime shows (I haven’t watched any cable news in over a month). Though obviously I’ll still take those 2 (and Lawrence and Joy) over anyone on the other networks except maybe Anderson. But the daytime programming is intolerably contributing to the delinquency of this election cycle and they should set a better example than the other networks.

          • another_steve

Yes. Lawrence O’Donnell and Joy Reid are still worth watching. Honest. Articulate. Insightful.

Gotta give MSNBC credit for allowing those two to be so outspoken.

        • Gustav2

        • Chucktech

I’d have to say that, in light of the appalling circus atmosphere of this election cycle, she was a bit concernstipated.

          • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

Exactly! She was breathlessly clutching her pearls over Dean’s small tweak while the media acts like the right’s unhinged conspiracy theories iare normal political discourse.

  • Bruno

If Hillary had said tRump was on coke I might wring my hands. But Howard Dean? You go, görl.

    • Tor

It’s best coming from the sidelines.

    • FancyThat

Glass houses, Mr. Dean. I remember that time he lost his very promising bid for the presidency by behaving in an incredibly undignified and “un-presidential” manner by engaging in a salacious eight seconds of enthusiastic SCREAMING to cheer on his close supporters.

Had Trump ever raised his voice in such an undignified manner, I doubt we’d be having this coked-up discussion today.

If it’s ever revealed that DJT actually has issues with cocaine abuse, clearly one of his former wives or concubines is to blame.

      • The talking head media hated Dean. They didn’t know him and to get to know him they might have to leave their office and do some actual journalism. FSM forbid! So they jumped all over the first embarrassing thing he did. Trump they loved. They already knew him and had tons of footage of him. Easy. They are a bunch of spoiled, lazy motherfuckers. Anyone who saw how badly they covered the WMD lies (wait, if you didn’t read foreign press at the time you still may not know just how poorly they covered those stories. They didn’t even try to ask questions. They just printed what they were told!) you already know this.

        • FancyThat

Indeed. I forget, sometimes, that my sarcasm occasionally reads as though I’m saying something serious. I was a huge Dean supporter, and truly felt he had a strong chance to take the White house. (felt the same way about Gary Hart, John Edwards…. sheesh)

It’s dumbfounding, sometimes, the hypocrisy of the GOP party. What’s okay for them is abominable for others. Orrin Hatch was one of the masters! I loved his quote about Michael Moore’s Farenheit 911 film — something along the line of “How dare they produce a film that is disparaging toward a sitting President.”

No disparaging films or propaganda toward President Obama was ever promoted by this same group of hatemongers….. right?

          • RoFaWh

Hatch is a momo, I believe. His thought processes were “Obama is an n-word, he is therefore not a real President and it’s okay to diss him as much as one wants.”

          • FancyThat

Yes, Hatch and Senator Craig were definitely cut from the same -phobic cloth. The ones who are the most prolific anti-LGBT protesters are always the ones with their lips pressed the tightest around the cap hill glory holes.

And I agree, as they’re still fighting the civil war, it’s inconceivable in their world that a black man could be President of the Union. He’s “Blackenstein” to them, and exists only for their scorn.

They’ll never have to worry about being on a reality television show since their lives simply don’t contain any of the ‘reality’ element.

  • Tor

I don’t care. I think a little innuendo needed to be planted. They don’t like it one bit. About time they had a taste of their own medicine.

    • Jay George

      Agree!

    • RoFaWh

It’s time they got as much of their own medicine as they’ve handed out for the last fifteen months.

      Not that I’m aware of.

    • Do Something Nice

No, and that was largely media driven.

      • jimbo65

And I believe I read somewhere that CNN amplified that last moment of the scream. I guess reason #100 to loath them.

        • popebuck1

He was in a room stuffed full of a deafening crowd, and was shouting over them. But he was in front of a noise-deadening mike (which the whole news media knew damn well), so when they played it back, it sounded as though he was just shrieking in a quiet room. They sandbagged him.

    • shivadog

That was bullshit, when I heard about “the scream” it sounded like he had lost his mind. Then I saw video of it and it was nothing. At worst it was maybe a little silly, but the media made it sound like he was foaming at the mouth or something.

      • Rex

Yet the media let’s Trump get away with total lunacy.

    • Bruno

The Dem electorate was extremely paranoid in 2004. With good reason. The Dem candidate had won 3 popular votes in a row, but only saw 2 of those elections go to them. All Dean had to do was literally sneeze wrong and everyone said “nope! gotta go with the boring one!” Not a good look.

    • KCMC

still hot IMHO. scream made him even more exciting.

  • TheManicMechanic

This is simply yelling it like it is. No need for apologies.

I love Howard Dean. He’s telling it like it is.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Good to see Dean give Trump a dose of his own “medicine”.

    • RoFaWh

With this difference (as other comments have pointed out): Dean has good reasons for thinking that Drumpf’s sniffles are due to cocaine. Drumpf’s baseless accusations against Ms. Clinton are just that: baseless.

  • Butch

Well, Dean is an MD who specialized in family practice, as I understand it. He’s probably seen the symptoms.

    • TampaDink

Many of us with absolutely no medical training have seen the symptoms. 😉

        • RoFaWh

No, it didn’t. Trump Drumpf is so weird that almost any accusation you care to make has to be treated as “possibly true”.

    • Ray Taylor

Perfect description of someone special we all despise.

  • GayOldLady

When a 70 year old man is up in the middle of the night and early morning hours tweeting, I’m thinking dementia, cocaine, speed. He goes off the tracks when the sun goes down, something is causing his sundowners.

He might not be on coke. But some form of speed? You betcha.

          • RoFaWh

I’ll give you one now: learn French. Learn it so well you can speak and understand the Quebec dialect (“joual”), but if that’s beyond you, a cultivated Parisian accent may suffice.

Knowing French counts for a lot when your application for permanent residence is examined.

          • Bruno

Interesting, thanks. I took 5 years in Jr. High/High School. I could probably pick it up a bit but would definitely have to do some intensive work to get better.

    • MichaelJ

My own experiences with a parent, other relatives and neighborhoods who have or had Alzheimer’s makes me think that we are seeing the early signs of progressive dementia. I can imagine that the stress of the campaign has hastened the onset of Alzheimer’s. His unwillingness to prepare for the debate in spite of his advisors best efforts could be another indicator.

      • GayOldLady

I agree, Michael. It came out that the folks charged with prepping couldn’t keep his attention. Not being able to concentrate is the sign of some other sort of problem. He could have ADD/ADHD, dementia or some other sort of neurological issue.

        • bzrd

Tony Schwartz says cheatoz lack of attention back when Schwartz was writing Art of the Deal was the same so the orange dusted probably has ADHD and maybe some other bad stuff going on, snort, sniffity sniff.

      • stuckinthewoods

I absolutely agree based on two of three cases of dementia I’ve dealt with. One was probably not Alzheimer but the two that were/are went through a phase early on that seems similar to Trump’s behavior. He’s an unrestrained narcissist in early Alzheimer.

    • Ross

I am the last person to defend little Donnie, but he has ALWAYS been like this.

In the 1980s he bragged that sleeping was a waste of time.

      • RoFaWh

The implication is that he’s been hooked on whatever-it-is since then. At least.

Did mommy put some coke in his bottle when he was a baby?

    • bzrd

it’s not that he’s tweeting at 3 a.m, us old farts tend to have some crazy sleep, but what it’s about. He just can’t let go with the jab Hillary gave him about Alicia Machado. It’s eating him up so in his coke craze he gets even crazier

      • GayOldLady

Being old too, I know the crazy sleep thingy is real for us old people, but the crazy tweet thingy is not what most of us are doing at 3am. You may be right about the coke making him “even crazier”.

  • Jay George

OT NOT OT: Tecate Beer trolls Trump in this ad. It’s great! 😀

    https://youtu.be/Bev4NZEFsCQ

    • RoFaWh

      Junior high school geography test:

Q: Where is Tecate and what is its signficance?

A: Tecate is where the eponymous beer is brewed and is also where the famous “San Diego and Arizona Railway” to the east from San Diego re-enters the US after entering Mexico at Tijuana. That railway is the one that traverses the Carrizo Gorge before crossing the Anza-Borrego desert.

      • Jay George

I hope you got full credit. 😀

  • Oikos

Thank you Governor Dean! No one should apologize for calling out Drumpf, no one.

  • SoCalGal20

I saw some of the press the other day bitching about what Dean said and not being apologetic about it, and while I get the Dems should take the high road, Trumps’ behavior is out-of-control and he’s either on something (like coke) or he has some mental health issue.

    • RoFaWh

      Or both.

      • SoCalGal20

Haha I was going to add that but yes that’s also a possibility.

I think HRC has already shown that it will be back just in time for 2018.

          • I hope so. And I’ll say against what I’ve been saying for decades. Democrats have at least a dozen issues which poll well above 60%. Put out a list of those and promise to pass them if they get Congress back. Don’t get distracted with any other issues. Push the popular things that will happen if Democrats are back in the majority. It would work. The only question is why they don’t do it.

          • Corsair Tact

      • Lazycrockett

        I HOPE not.

  • MikeBx2

If he would have prefaced his tweet with “many people are saying” the media would be ok with it.

    • DrRobY

And the fact is, many people ARE saying it.

  • Guest

    Bravo Howard.

    • Ross

      Indeed.

  • Brian in Valdosta

I think that it is pretty clear that Howard Dean is merely doing unto Trump what Trump has done unto so many others, namely to Ted Cruz via his allegations about the senior Cruz’s involvement in the assassination of JFK.

So I say to Trump, “sit down and stop whingeing while you take your own medicine.” Biatch.

    • Soren456

But he’s doing it with FAR more evidence than Trump has ever had.

      • Robert Schaaf

        And he’s an MD!

I’ve always wanted to marry a doctor.

          • RoFaWh

I have a PhD. Does that count?

          • Brian in Valdosta

My mother always said she would be proud, oh so proud, on the day that I received my Ph.D. in hand. So I could part the crowd around a hurt person and say, “Stand back!! I’m a doctor!”

Not sure if the victim would feel comforted by that.

      • bzrd

“Notice Trump sniffing all the time.” Fact, anyone watching the debate noticed the incessant sniffing. “Coke user?” A good question, many wondered the same.

  • Max_1

Media took the bait and Dean let them have it…

Not bad. I’d still like to see the Michigan and NH polls back up towards double digits (in addition to VA and CO).

We’re getting there but I’ll take this. This is good!

If Michigan ain’t sick of this Teabaggery by now, I don’t know who is. Hard to believe Snyder lasted that long after appealing to the backwoods all anti-government then appointing over-governors on all the small towns. (To fuck it up.)

I mean, I used to live in the UP, how that was supposed to last, even there, I dunno.

    Thank you, Mr. Dean.

  • Jeffg166

It was my first thought. He needed a bump to get his tiny nads out on the stage to face Hillary. What a gutless wonder.

  • EweTaw

Howard Dean has nothing to apologize for.

  • Merv99

While anybody with two brain cells understands the point Dean was trying to make, it’s not a good idea to draw attention away from your opponent when he’s in trouble.

  • lymis

Must be hell to have a loose cannon in your party that just spouts shit to the media.

    • Friday

It’s not like they could come up with a coherent policy or a better candidate in the first place. They just didn’t know when to forefeit and hope to rebuild.

  • ColoMtnWoman

Kind of like “Sorry-Not Sorry” from Drumpf about calling Obama/Hillary the “Founders of ISIS”… Pot/Kettle/Black

    • Friday

Yeah, only he shouldn’t be sorry, just the media has to cover the twisting of the blade now, cause of their own double-standards.

  • Proud MOFO Beaner (bkb)

This photo along with the one Joe always posts of David Duke always makes me feel like I’m staring into the abyss. ***shudder***

  • Ninja0980

Glad to see Dean telling the hypocrites in the media to take their demands for an apology and shove it.
Any and every theory about Clinton’s health went unchallenged, yet Dean makes a remark and the press wants him to do a full mea culpa.

  • Ziad Baaklini

I love how he pointed out how the same people who disparage Hillary for not being inspirational are only able to enjoy their liberties because of people like Hillary fighting for them.

On this same day in 2012, Obama was forecast with 320 Electoral votes.

    270 are needed to win.

    And Hillary… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f3e8adca300b971458f75b751b3246c7320e231d0454fb86bdfbf02fb40d4b9e.png

    • RoFaWh

It is my hope that on the morning of November 8, tea party types nationwide sit sipping their morning coffee and thinking “You know those fake accusations against the Maximum Leader to be? Too many of them for them to all be fake. Where there is smoke there is fire. Prolly better to vote for the bitch.”

I’d like to see the election be the greatest of all landslides, ending with Drumpf getting, oh, say, twenty electoral votes and Ms. Clinton all the rest.

Drumpf needs to be stepped on and squished like a bug.

  • greenmanTN

I have no idea who she is, but I don’t really like the presenter/host.

Rachel Maddow and Joy Reid have been awesome this season, but if I wanted to listen to a dentist’s drill I’d make an appointment for the dentist.

  • And this is why I love Howard Dean. Most liberals cave. He did not back down because unlike most liberals he actually has a spine. Maybe Trump snorted cocaine before going onstage for the debate and maybe he did not. But since Trump avoided the two most obvious explanations for the sniffing 1) allergies (there’s a lot of pollen this time of year) or 2) coming down with a cold (a common occurrence when the weather changes as drastically as it did over the weekend, and instead chose to blame the microphone (which is nuts but in keeping with the kind of paranoid nuttery often spouted by coke users), what are we to think?

I don’t know if Trump uses cocaine or not, but it would explain a good deal of his behavior. He can, of course, submit to a drug test by an independent lab and dispel any such speculation.

    • TampaDink

Well it couldn’t possibly have been allergies or a cold since we already know that “Unequivocally, Donald Trump would be the healthiest person ever elected to the presidency.”

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Why should he apologize, he heard from people, the best people, people who know things and, of course, the internet.

It stings doesn’t it Donald, to have the tables so deliciously turned on you. Fuck you, fuck your family and their little dogs too.

All the insane behavior from the orange menace and nothing has happened. And all Howard Dean did was let out a yell.

  • worstcultever

If there’s anybody who could give less of a fuck about media pearl-clutching, it’s Howard Dean. Keep it comin, doc!

  • ian

While watching the debate with a friend I said trumps sniffles are typical of a coke head. I wasn’t serious of course, that’s the sort of innuendo the GOP trades in, but i LOL’ed when Howard Dean came out and said it. Actually a cocaine addiction would explain a lot about trumps behavior. His latest 3am twitter rant being the most recent example. So let the insinuations and innuendo fly! The difference being people on the left know and understand what insinuation and innuendo are, and why turning it back on the GOP is funny. Those in trumps camp, well they’d have to look those words up like they had to do with “deplorable”.

  • DoctorDJ
  • Gianni

I don’t see any need to apologize. He didn’t accuse Trump of using cocaine; he simply posed a question/possibility based on Trump’s affectations that clearly mimic those of a cokehead. Besides, with all the shit that Trump, his campaign, and his right-wing nutjob supporters have slung at Hillary, they shouldn’t be at all surprised that some shit has come back at them.

  • gothambear

go Howard go, don’t back down. Be the gadfly!

Damn, she was dense. He says, “You’ve allowed massive innuendo from Trump which gave him enough momentum to be nominated.” Her best retort, “If you say it’s not nice for him to do it, why is it OK for you to do it?” DOH!!!
