San Diego Union-Tribune Endorses Hillary, First Dem Presidential Endorsement In Paper’s 148 Year History

From the editorial board of the San Diego Union-Tribune:

Sixteen months into his campaign, Donald Trump remains Donald Trump. Despite constant counsel from GOP advisors and insiders to adopt a decorous public persona, Trump continues to lash out at critics, to insist complex problems can be solved with little effort and to depict an America that’s been “ripped off by every single country in the world,” as he said in this week’s debate.

For millions of Americans upset with the status quo, it’s an entertaining show, and a convincing one.

But if Trump is elected president, he will no longer just be putting on a show. Upon inauguration on Jan. 20, he would be in charge of the executive branch of a global superpower and possess enormous authority, operating with no coherent worldview besides “I alone can fix it.” Military leaders have said Trump will face pushback if he orders them to do illegal things, such as torturing the families of terrorists, but in many crucial parts of the government, a President Trump will be able to people his administration with individuals whose jobs depend on keeping him happy. Imagine that. Imagine President Trump.

Based on what Trump has said, we could see an administration that’s friendlier to ruthless Russia — which is waging a cyberwar against America — than to such democracies and historic partners as Great Britain, Germany, Canada, Japan and Australia.

And that’s just for starters. Hit the link for the rest.

If people still read newspapers this might mean something.

    • Blake Jordan

Well obviously these newspaper endorsements are not “game changers”, but it is not completely insignificant that they are breaking the trend of exclusively endorsing the rethuglican candidate, because drumpf is just that dangerous…

Who knows what it will take for the undecided, or currently third party directed voters to wake up and vote for Clinton…
      Everything must be done!!!

      • Rex

I agree. Thinking people would pay attention to these endorsements, but Trump supporters don’t think.

      • Bruno

If it could be a full month from now of tRump sniffing, insane 3AM insult tweets, and horrendous debate performances, that would do the trick. I hope he does the nation at least the one solid of obliging.

    • karen in kalifornia

San Diego tends to be a conservative part of CA so, yes, this is good. Plus don’t forget, this is where Rep Darrell Issa is from and Dems are trying to unseat him.

      • pj

well nothing will get done in government until blockheads like issa get shown the door.

    • bambinoitaliano

We can’t assume those of us in JMG is the majority nor are those alt right on Trump side. That left many gray areas in between. Many do not go to different news sources to get their information . If nothing else if a pro Republican press suddenly speak out against Trump, some of their readers might think twice about it. Don’t forget there are still Republicans who are not happy with Trump. At this juncture, they rather have a do over in the party. Call it a major correction.

      • Rex

My comment was just me being snarky. You know Trump always says print media is dying. I’m all for any endorsement Hillary gets

        • bambinoitaliano

          Duh! My bad 🙂

    • SoCalGal20

There are lots of older people in San Diego County. They probably read newspapers.

  • Sabazinus

His “show” just needs more razzle dazzle and he’ll be fine. Some additional yelling, more orange pancake makeup, a feather boa…yep, maybe some frothing at the mouth. Perfect.

  • james1200

Joe, Republicans are having a bad day overall, including this, in case you hadn’t heard. And yes, this dude is a married, right-wing Republican.

    http://www.wwltv.com/mb/news/investigations/fbi-looks-into-jp-president-mike-yennis-allegedly-explicit-texts-to-young-man/327862974
    https://queerty-prodweb.s3.amazonaws.com/content/docs/2016/09/30105259/30-mike-yenni022jpg-dc6c8ff57cbb2b1b.jpg
The FBI has been looking into allegations that Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni sent sexually explicit texts to a 17-year-old he first noticed at a high school function last year, in the middle of Yenni’s successful 2015 campaign for one of the region’s most powerful political offices.
Three sources with direct knowledge told WWL-TV that FBI agents have interviewed at least four people about the explicit text messages between Yenni, 40, and a young man who was 17 at the time and is now 19, and collected the teen’s cell phone, apparently to search it.
“We have been made aware of the allegations and are looking into it,” Craig Betbeze, a spokesman for the FBI, said in a November email to the online publication NOLA Defender, which collaborated with WWL-TV on the reporting of this story. Betbeze later confirmed his statement to WWL-TV, but declined to comment further. The teen said his last contact with the FBI was in April.
The friend, who allegedly helped connect the two, declined to be interviewed by WWL-TV. The youth said he and Yenni began to talk on the phone and text one another, and soon, the politician came to visit him at his job at a mall food court. They met in a bathroom, the youth said, and Yenni gave him some designer underwear. They kissed briefly.

    • BobSF_94117

The age of consent in LA is 17. Why is the FBI investigating?

      • TK

Age of consent may be 17…but you can’t have pics of a 17-year-old’s pee pee on your phone/tablet. Nor can you send said 17yo pics of your junk. That is what they are investigating.

        • BobSF_94117

Yeah, I was listening to the video at the news site and they got around to explaining a possible reason for FBI involvement. Frankly, if it’s that, it’s a horrible thing. The idea that you can consent to sex but can’t take part in sexting is ridiculous. IF that’s what they’re doing, they’re imposing a federal law that ignores the age of consent laws in the states and makes millions of of-age kids felons.

          • BobSF_94117

The video mentioned the electronic-device-18yo thingy as a possible reason. I can thing of others, such as extortion. It sounds like the guy has a thing for teens and this boy wasn’t the only one.

          • bambinoitaliano

That will be a conundrum for the GOP supreme court justice should the issue ever bring forth. Protect the state rights or barring man boy homosexual sexting. Decision, decision, decision.

          • BobSF_94117

I would hope some liberal SCOTUS justices would question the right of the feds to criminalize sexting for anyone under 18 when states allow actual sex between them.

        • bambinoitaliano

Apparently Anthony Weiner did not get that message.

      • james1200

“Misdemeanor carnal knowledge of a juvenile is sexual intercourse with consent between someone age 17 to 19 and someone age 15 to 17 when the difference in their ages is greater than two years.”

        http://age-of-consent.findthedata.com/l/19/Louisiana

Is that what this says? I can’t figure it out, lol. Anyway, now I’ve googled “age of consent LA” and that’s part of MY internet record, so thanks a lot.

        • BobSF_94117

          Right, but Yenni isn’t 15-17. 🙂

          • james1200

He was when they kissed, in the bathroom in a mall. This is like the worst Brent Corrigan porn ever.

          • BobSF_94117

No, no. Yenni is the older man. He’s 40. The law you quoted describes as a misdemeanor sex between a 17-19yo and a younger teen, 15-17. This is often called a Romeo and Juliet law.

The young man in this case, the currently 19yo, was 17 when Yenni hit on him and kissed him. He was of age and legally consented to the relationship (it’s not at all clear if they ever had sex, at 17 or later).

          • james1200

Ok. Now I get it. I mixed up their names, too.

          • BobSF_94117
      • Blake Mason

One of the other questions is… does he have a history of voting against equality?

        • BobSF_94117

Queerty has a couple articles about the story. They say they didn’t find anything.

The more I read about this, the less I like this outing.

          • james1200

He’s a Republican. He willingly joined a party of Christian Sharia supporters, who hate gay people and want to strip us of our rights. NO FUCKING SYMPATHY.

      • Shy Guy

        http://www.thegailygrind.com/2016/09/30/married-conservative-politician-outed-dating-17-year-old-boy-kissing-mall-bathroom/

“Under Louisiana law, the age of consent is 17, meaning Yenni would have committed no crime if he had had sex with the youth – something the youth said did not happen. But ironically, one question is whether Yenni’s texts proposing such activity could violate a federal law designed to protect children under 18 from obscenity.

The federal law bars the use of a telecommunications device for “the transmission of any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication which is obscene or child pornography, knowing that the recipient of the communication is under 18 years of age, regardless of whether the maker of such communication placed the call or initiated the communication.”

Former U.S. Attorney Harry Rosenberg speculates that may be the law the feds have been looking into.”

So as you say in a later comment, consenting to sex is legal, but purely textual messages about doing so are criminal, ignoring the state ages of consent.

        • BobSF_94117

America seems to love making kids criminals these days. To save them, of course…

Bill and Barack and Joe go on a road trip across America after Hillary is elected.

      • james1200

Or, Trump sneaks in (through cheating or an electoral horroshow like 2000 in Florida) and we have a 1861-type situation where Barack, Bill and Hillary retreat here to New England and we secede from the rest of you people.

        • LookielouE1707

Can’t retreat too far into new england, ME-2 is deep pink.

One of the reasons the press hates the Clintons is “Clinton Time.”

Everyone, including the sitting President, has to wait for them.

      • That’s mainly just Bill. Hillary is almost always punctual.

Trumpy, on the other hand, thinks nothing of making his rally crowds wait 2-3 hours before he deigns to show up.

It’s an endorsement filled with bullshit about Hillary but it’s nice to see the plug.

    I really liked this part:

“Terrible leaders can knock nations off course. Venezuela is falling apart because of the obstinance and delusions of Hugo Chávez and his successor. Argentina is finally coming out of the chaos created by Cristina Kirchner and several of her predecessors.

Trump could be our Chávez, our Kirchner. We cannot take that risk.”

Breaking: The Chicago Sun-Times has endorsed Hillary.

    http://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/editorial-vote-for-clinton-and-avert-a-train-wreck/

They stopped endorsing presidential candidates after the 2000 election. Apparently they made an exception this time around. It might have had something to do with rival Chicago Tribune’s endorsement of Gary Johnson. They had to show the world that not all us Chicagoans are nuts.

    • Lazycrockett

      http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/yourelate.gif

Oh my bad I thought this was the Chicago Tribune, but I like the gif so Im not deleting it.

    • Gustav2

They had to show the world that not all Chicagoans are nuts and actually read newspapers to know where Aleppo is.

    • Bruno

“Allow us, as well, a special shout-out to those who understand what a danger Trump represents but are cool to Clinton: A vote for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, a man who could not even pass a basic world geography test, is not a principled protest gesture. It is a retreat to the sidelines. So, too, would be a vote for Green candidate Jill Stein. Neither can win. A vote for either of them would be a cop-out that cuts in Trump’s favor. Let’s not pretend to any false equivalencies between Clinton and Trump.”

I think that’s a quite perfect way to cut down the Tribune’s argument for a 3rd party candidate. In plain language.

  • TuuxKabin
    • To be honest, I don’t get Blige and find her vaguely creepy.

      • TuuxKabin

Was my first ‘exposure’ to her, and they do talk about their ‘faith’ a lot. Not a lot of proselytizing, but enough to cause an eyeroll. Hillary talked about her mother’s hardship, and how Chelsea and her mom were very close. And hearing Hillary’s conviction to the way she leads her life and stuck it out in her marriage was insightful to me.

  • So far, not a single major paper in the entire country has endorsed Trump. Not one.

The other thing I’m finding amazing in all this isn’t that these papers, media outlets, TV news pundits, and even late-night comics aren’t just saying Trump has lousy or unworkable proposals.

They’re flat out saying he is UNFIT to be President. Moreover, there are even now major Republican leaders who have been saying it. (True, many don’t and many won’t even rescind their endorsements — that’s how we can tell the abject cowards and craven opportunists from the still patriotic country-before-party GOPers.)

For a major party candidate to be declared literally unfit for elected office is unprecedented.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think this very short video is what they are all thinking in their heads when contemplating a Trump presidency and I’d actually like to see a column that’s only two words long:

This will become a cattle rush of endorsements and non-endorsements. And who ends up looking stupidest of all? The Repugnants who have played along with this dangerous charade for so long.

  • I know I’m a little late to the party on this post from Joe much earlier today…but holy shit. (Reason I’m late is we had a power outage for several hours here and I’m on now just catching up.)

    This is the one: http://www.joemygod.com/2016/09/30/trump-continues-miss-universe-attacks/

Basic gist is Donald apparently stayed up all night last night going apeshit over the Machado thing, rage-tweeting from 3:20am onward how Ms. Machado “wasn’t an angel” and how there were “sex tapes” out there. As if there weren’t dozens and dozens of nude soft-core porn photos of his own wife. (Those, are real; it’s already being alleged the so-called ‘sex tapes’ involving Machado are phonies.)

It had been more than four days since Secretary Clinton mentioned Ms. Machado and Donald’s misogynistic treatment of her…and not only can’t he make himself shut up about it, it’s actually keeping him up all night. Really, a smart (and sane) person would realize that campaigning is a grueling effort and getting enough rest is crucial. But not Donald!

What’s even funnier is the Clinton camp is saying Ms. Machado isn’t all they have on Donald.

  • JellyDonut

So Hillary has the endorsement of most of the free press and Trump has the endorsement of the KKK. Seems about right!
