Coming Soon: Golden Girls Action Figures

ABC News reports:

As it is every year, next week’s New York Comic Con is famous for its exclusive products — that is, toys and other items that you can only buy there. This year, the company Funko is releasing action figures of four unlikely heroes: Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sofia — yes, of “The Golden Girls.”

The four-day annual nerd mecca, which runs from Oct. 6 to Oct. 9 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan, will be the only place to buy the special four-pack, which fans can use to recreate their favorite adventures from the beloved ’80s sitcom.

The company is already selling Golden Girls bobble-heads.9120_goldengirls_blanche_hires_1024x1024

I’m absolutely certain that such a product has a market. I have a hard time believing that the market overlaps significantly with the people who attend Comic Con.

Given that, I presume that some entrepreneurs will show up, buy them out, and sell them on eBay for a huge markup. But what the hell do I know?

    • bambinoitaliano

Comic Con has gone beyond the traditional super heroes and sci-fi characters. Any fictional characters that originate from television and movie creation with a popular following and immortalized by fans are now part of the convention.

I believe that Dorothy’s superpower was snark, just like many of the JMG posters.

    • CanuckDon

“You’ll have to forgive my mother. She had a stroke a couple years ago which left her a complete burden.”

  • HKDaniel

I was all ready to go Squee!!!
    Then I saw the example.

    • Rex

I think that’s the bobblehead, hopefully the action figures look more life-like.

  • LackofFaithify

Bea Arthur comes with a kung fu grip, and rocket launcher.

    • perversatile
    • Reality.Bites

(To clarify, I’m not mocking you. I’m pretending that the real Bea Arthur had those, so obviously the action figure would.)

  • Hey Big Daddy, I’m queen of a ball.
(it’s not a direct quote, but if anyone remembers it, it’s one hell of a funny episode.)

    • Treant

But I probably would have anyway.

    • Dejerrity Mycron

I saw that rerun last night. She finishes: “Twice…but I probably would have anyway.”

  • Joe in PA

I hope Matt Baume is reading this!

    • Bj Lincoln

Me too. That video he did was great!

  • Texndoc

I have the DVD collection and it makes me furious that my favorite line of all time is always edited (left out) for commercials:
Sophia has lost her glasses and can’t see well. The girls are around the kitchen table. Sophia walks in wearing a long flannel nightgown and pulls a chair close to her and begins lifting the gown.
Dorothy: Ma! Stop! This is the kitchen!
Sophia: Oh my God. Then I think I’m poaching an egg in the toilet!

    • Yep, I remember that one too.
Truth be told, there’s so many good lines throughout the whole show. By all of them.

  • Bj Lincoln

I’ll take a bobble head of each gal!

  • greenmanTN

Even I’m not THAT gay, though if I had a lanai I would be sorely tempted…. πŸ˜‰

    • Not THAT gay?
      But I digress.

      • greenmanTN

It was meant to be playful, not insulting or rude.

        • No no. I didn’t take it as such, not at all.
It was just something Sophia would always say. But I digress.
          No offense meant.

          • greenmanTN

I wasn’t the GG fan that many gay men were. But but god help me, I loved The Nanny, so I can cast no stones!

          • prixator

NOTHING lifts my mood more than watching an episode or two of The Nanny!

I have been watching the DVD’s lately (I’m on season 5 at the moment) and now when I talk to myself (which is often), I pronounce a lot of words in a Queens accent (Queens, NY – not like Liz).

But, like most sitcoms that involve sexual tension between the leads, they have to eventually get together romantically – and the show quickly fades to the end.

          • greenmanTN

So many great character actors/actresses too. Yetta and Fran’s mom, Niles and CC…

          • greenmanTN

OK! Just making sure. I can sometimes be blunt and profane, but mostly my malice is good-natured, if that makes any sense. Unless I deliberately set out to do it, I don’t intend to insult anyone, and you can usually tell the difference. A good clue is if it starts out “Listen, you asshole…”

      • Acronym Jim

I’m not THAT gay either…I’m this gay.

  • clay

I’m sure I’ve seen Sophia action figures before.

  • Calabron

These have been out for a bit and AREN’T action figures. But they are super sweet and fun …well, except for Sophia. ; )

  • I think the example shown is the bobble head and not the action figures being offered at Comic-con, but I could be wrong. It is early and I haven’t had my cheesecake yet.

  • boseph

Just to clarify, these are not bobble-heads. Though do look the part with the massive heads. They are just “Pops,” large head figures on small bodies. Additionally, standard action figures are coming out through Reaction. These will look the part of the usual action figure ala Star Wars, GI Joe.

  • good shot green

They were so mean to each other! I can take only so much insult humor.

  • Kruhn

Funko, they’re awesome with their Star Wars packs.

  • crewman

I always thought Sex and the City should have had an episode where they went on a vacation to Florida to see an older aunt or cousin of one of theirs, and when they get there, it’s the Golden Girls, and that whole portion is filmed and staged exactly like an episode of the Golden Girls.

    • Reality.Bites

I always thought the Facts of Life girls should retire and move to Florida together.

Kim Fields is 47 now. Only 4 years younger than Rue McLanahan was at the start. Lisa Whelchel is 53, And Charlotte Rae and Cloris Leachman are still around.

Or fuck – let them move into the GG house, which Rose inherited as the last surviving Girl and still comes around all the time. (Yes, I’m retconning the Golden Palace out of existence).

      • I believe the exterior of that house has long since been demolished.

  • (a) They aren’t bobbleheads. Funko Pop figures are something entirely different.
    (b) The four pack is easily available on Amazon.

  • Hryflex

Okay, my Christmas shopping is finished.

  • Rex

Wondering if the Blanche figure is more flexible than the others.

  • bJason

      Appropriately served with cheesecake.

    • Uncle Mark

I love it !! Blanche’s candle in scarlet red

    • houstonray

      OMG. MUST. HAVE. THESE. πŸ˜‰

Back when I was a girl in St. Olaf, they used to call action figures Gaflinga FlΓΌgen.

“The Golden Girls” was my mama’s favorite TV show. I would watch it with her when I visited her in her assisted living residence.

Some of the lines went over her head (she suffered from dementia), so I explained them to her.

  • MikeBx2

    Must have!

  • Avenger280

Funkos rock! I have several in my office at work, including Scully (X-Files) and Piper (OITNB). If they’d make Wynonna Earp figures, my life would be complete πŸ™‚
