Libertarian Gary Johnson Gets All Presidentialy [VIDEO]

Talking Points Memo reports:

When we last heard from Gary Johnson, he was getting tongue-tied over Aleppo. But in another interview this week with MSNBC, he stuck his tongue out to prove that he should be on the presidential debate stage.

In a sit-down with MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt, the libertarian candidate said he could catch Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in the polls just by appearing on the debate stage, regardless of the content of his answers.

“It wouldn’t have anything to do with my debate performance, either,” Johnson said. “It would just be that people would realize there’s another choice.” To underscore his point, Johnson continued on with his tongue out: “I think I could stand up there for the whole debate and not say anything.”

  • Mark

His tongue is out in search of a nice asshole…… Sheesh, do I have to ‘splain everything?

    • MB

Apparently Frothy Mix has volunteered his.

  • Gustav2

    Is he speaking Millennials’ language?

  • Do Something Nice

This is how I see all libertarians: Clueless nutcases.

    • Todd20036

A lot of berned bros will vote for him over Clinton.
So, yeah. I agree with you.

      • Do Something Nice

Continuing your obsession with former Sanders supporters isn’t helping Clinton to win. The data shows that Johnson is polling 9% at best, which proves that you are full of shit.

If I can hold my nose and vote for Clinton, maybe you can get over your butthurt and tantrums, STFU about Sanders and his supporters, move on and hope that Clinton wins.

Now is not the time for this divisive bullshit.

        • Todd20036

          *shrug*
          Suit yourself.

Just stating an observation from many of Johnson’s fans.

They aren’t going to vote for Clinton because they feel too entitled to do so.

And they aren’t going to NOT vote for Clinton because of an internet comment I make.

Deny it all you want, but many ardent Bernie bros are going to not vote for Clinton even though she is the only one capable of beating Trump.

Some of them comment on these very threads.

          • Do Something Nice

You are being divisive. You are not helping Clinton.

            Stop it.

          • danolgb

You are concern trolling. Stop it.

        • cleos_mom

Those of us who aren’t holding our noses are just taking a few seconds off to point and laugh.

          • Do Something Nice

OK, so your obsession with Sanders supporters is greater than your wish for a Clinton win.

And please do revisit all the bullshit Clinton said about Obama in 2008. If we are all expected to move on from that, certainly you all can stop trolling and focus on the win. Oh, and this:

If McCain vs. Obama, 28% of Clinton Backers Go for McCain

            http://www.gallup.com/poll/105691/mccain-vs-obama-28-clinton-backers-mccain.aspx

          • cleos_mom

Honey, we all heard that one weeks ago. Do try to keep up.

          • Todd20036

LOL, a single poll, 6 months before the 2008 elections.
Even I know you are smarter than that.

          • At some point in the early summer of 2008 I probably said that if Clinton got the nomination I’d vote for McCain. I would never have actually done that but it was a long, frustrating campaign and I was angry at some of the things she said. Things said in the middle of a contested primary should never be taken too seriously.

      • Butch

Most of his positions are the polar opposite of Bernie’s. You really need to be uninformed to consider him an option.

        • Todd20036

The quote below is just the tip of the Johnson iceberg:

“Later that year, when the state’s health department faced a budget crunch, his solution was to impose a time limit on benefits for disabled adults, which immediately threw 731 people off the rolls. (The maximum payment was $231 per month. A judge later invalidated the limit and said it violated federal law.)

Three years later, Johnson eliminated roughly $48 million from the state budget. He slashed funding for programs that subsidized drugs for AIDS patients, for domestic-violence victims, for home-care services, and for a toll-free line to the legislature.”

          • That’s like deciding between stomach viruses. Do I want to spend the weekend with diarrhea or vomiting. They’re both idiots who shouldn’t be taken seriously.

          • Traxley Launderette

My neighbor’s arthritic, half-blind, semi-incontinent, 17 year old cat is better than Jill Stein. And he still catches mice to earn his keep — which is more than she can claim.

      • The_Wretched

Given Johnson’s polling, that cannot be true.

        • Todd20036

Only a few of the most rabid Bernie fans, I should say. Most realize that Hillary is 93% of Bernie and will vote for her, while Trump is 2% of Bernie.

          • There really aren’t that many Bernie supporters who are going to vote for Johnson in November and I’m suspicious that most of the anonymous people online claiming to be Bernie supporters who are now for Trump or Johnson aren’t even posting those things from the US.

      • Yes, the Bernie supporters who were motivated more by hating Clinton (and a good deal of misogyny) than being for any of his ideas. She adopted a lot of his ideas and that is a big win for such an outsider candidate. anyone who can’t see that does not live in reality.

    • danolgb

There is no such thing as a true libertarian. They have their hand out as much as anyone.

even Ann Rand, the original modern Libertarian ended up accepting Social Secruity, welfare, and disability payments.

        • Because Rand didn’t have a single clue about economies or businesses work. if she had she’d have started one instead of being a mooch her whole life. Atlas Shrugged was written in the 50s and the two big industries of the future for her are steel and railroads. That’s fucking hilarious as everyone at the time knew those were fading fast. It would be like writing a book now in which the big industry decades in the future was print newspapers. She hadn’t the first clue how the real world worked and what’s sad is that people who have been running the world for the past 30 years worship her. Allan Greenspan literally sat at her feet and look how badly he fucked up our country!

          • Gene

I SOOOO love you right now.
you nailed EVERY word of that….if only more people realized she was a fool captaining a ship of fools…and that Greenspan was one of her idiot acolytes

          • McSwagg

Having read both The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, I found her blatant misogyny to be deafening. In both novels, the main female supporting character is basically raped by the ‘hero’ and she is portrayed as ‘loving it’.

Let’s face it, even those of us who will vote for Hillary understand that a huge percentage of the population DO want another option. But people want a better option, not just an alternative. If you’re just going to act like a clown, we already have Trump (A clown more in the vein of IT, but a clown all the same). If you’re not providing a way to improve the country, how are you a better option than Hillary, who has provided something we can work with? There is dissent in this country. It’s what Johnson is counting on. And it is what he just mocked and dismissed.

    • Do Something Nice

I want another option, but as it doesn’t exist, I’m voting AGAINST Trump by voting FOR Clinton.

        • Gustav2

Me too, or right to sleep. That’s why the 70’s were so boozy for me.

      • I’m not sure that’s true, but my question is which of the Ford kids was smooking weed in the White House. (Or was it Betty. Let it be Betty. I just loved her!)

        • Gustav2

Susan for sure, and probably Steven.

          • Susan once told this story on CSPAN. (The did some sort of event for First Daughters that was covered.) So the last night the Ford’s were in the WH, Steve Ford and the Rockefeller sons spent the night camping out in the Lincoln bedroom which is supposed to be haunted. I think they were all worked up over maybe seeing his ghost. At some point in the middle of the night Betty snuck into the room wearing a ghostly costume and scared the shit out of them. Again, I just love her. (Note: this isn’t that well known for some reason but Betty Ford was one of the first people to host fundraising events for groups combating the AIDS epidemic. She was a great women.)

          • I think Susan had her prom at the White House. (It was probably easier and even cheaper to just have it there than for the SS to try to secure another venue.) Somehow over the last 50 years or so there have been a lot of daughters living in the WH (Caroline Kennedy, The Nixon daughters, the Johnson daughters, Amy Carter, Susan Ford, and more recently Obama’s two daughters) and not that many boys. When the Obamas moved in some of the former residents told them some of the secrets of the building (hiding places, alternate routes, etc.). It’s like a bipartisan sisterhood.

Let us not forget this POS is taking more votes away from Hillary then Trump and doesn’t give a damn about that fact.
Not to mention to anyone who claims to be a progressive, voting for Gary Johnson is about as stupid of a vote that you can make.
He’s no progressive, not even close.

  • The_Wretched

Who is the tongue thing supposed to impress? Is he trying to out Trump Trump?

  • Richard

Johnson just insulted a lot of voters suggesting they would change their vote to him simply by his mere presence on a TV screen (‘m assuming with his tongue sticking out). Hillary is by far the intelligent adult in that field of four. Hillary should be light years ahead of Trump in the polls, but as H.L. Mencken once said: “No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.”

    • Libertarians, like fundamentalist Christians, think that we don’t all love their ideas because we haven’t heard them. They just can’t seem to accept that we’ve heard their ideas and think they’re stupid.

Johnson is the perfect Bernie substitute.

    He supports TPP.
    He supports fracking.
He opposes any federal policies that would make college more affordable or reduce student debt. In fact, he wants to abolish student loans entirely.
He thinks Citizens United is great.
He doesn’t want to raise the minimum wage. At all.
He favors a balanced-budget amendment and has previously suggested that he would slash federal spending 43 percent in order to balance the budget. This would require massive cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and social welfare programs of all kinds.
    He opposes net neutrality.
He wants to increase the Social Security retirement age to 75 and he’s open to privatization.
He opposes any kind of national health care and wants to repeal Obamacare.
He opposes practically all forms of gun control.
He opposes any kind of paid maternity or medical leave.
He supported the Keystone XL pipeline.
He opposes any government action to address climate change.
He wants to cut the corporate tax rate to zero.
He appears to believe that we should reduce financial regulation. All we need to do is allow big banks to fail and everything will be OK.
He wants to remove the Fed’s mandate to maximize employment and has spoken favorably of returning to the gold standard.
He wants to block-grant Medicare and turn it over to the states.
He wants to repeal the 16th Amendment and eliminate the income tax, the payroll tax, and the estate tax. He would replace it with a 28 percent FairTax that exempts the poor. This is equivalent to a 39 percent sales tax, and it would almost certainly represent a large tax cut for the rich.

I well understand that people are interested in a protest vote, but for Johnson? The man is a run of the mill libertarian, ensconced in narrow, poorly informed, confirmation bias-ridden worldview. He’s the epitome of the small mind that encounters a set of ideas in his youth, thinks they are the final truth to complex questions, and then never develops the curiosity, self-reflection or complexity of mind to see beyond his original mistakes.

  • BobSF_94117

What I find most remarkable about Gary Johnson is that actually ran a state.

Mind boggling, and not in a good way.

    • He was our governor for two terms (94-02), but it is debatable whether he actually ‘ran’ anything. We knew him as Governor Veto, because the only thing he really accomplished was to veto more bills and make more line-item vetoes than every previous NM governor combined. The state spent most of that 8 year period dealing with failed budgets and flirting with gov’t shut-downs.

Johnson’s only real kudos came from his handling of the Cerro Grande fire near Los Alamos in 2000…but the plain fact is that wildfire started because there was a ‘controlled burn’ which never should’ve happened in the first place due to drought conditions and high winds.

      • IamM

The benefits of separation of powers. One crazy can’t do much damage on their own.

        • Especially at the state level. Of course that depends on the state constitution. In Texas, for example, the Lt Gov can actually do more because that’s who can set the legislative agenda. The Gov can do very little without the legislature’s approval.

          • Thus the Texas governorship is a perfect office for know-nothing morons like Dubya and Perry, right?

          • People really had no idea how big an idiot Perry was until he ran for president. I don’t think he ever had to do a debate running for governor (the races were never contested really) and everything he said was scripted. And then WOW. ouch!

          • McSwagg

Why do you exclude Greg Abbott from that list? He’s the perfect successor to the Bush/Perry dynasty.

  • The man can seem charming and eccentric, but is actually kinda nuts. Trust me, we New Mexicans know this from experience, having once elected him governor. He set the record for most vetoes, which exceeded those of every previous NM governor combined. His most notable accomplishments as governor? None, really. He spent a lot of his tenure obsessed with school vouchers to undercut public education and promoting private prisons, but fortunately was thwarted by the Democratic majority state legislature.

And his positions, with very few exceptions, are basically the GOP platform ‘on steroids.’ So he wants to legalize pot, big fucking deal. He also wants to make it legal for corporations to pollute all they like and to cut corporate tax rates to ZERO. For fundy bigots to discriminate all they want. For all civil rights laws to be repealed. To privatize EVERYTHING. And to abolish Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid; needless to say, he also believes there should be no federal regulation whatsoever of health insurance and that the ACA should be repealed in toto, with nothing replacing it.

    • Helen Damnation βœ“α΅›α΅‰Κ³αΆ¦αΆ αΆ¦α΅‰α΅ˆ

I lived in New Mexico under Johnson, and don’t recall much of anything he did. Then again, I wasn’t politically “tuned-in” then, too busy with jobs and housing and life and stuff. But I don’t recall any of the the horrors that has been seen recently under former Louisiana Governor Booby Swindal, or current Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin.

      • You didn’t recall anything because aside from vetoes, he didn’t do much of anything. His one ‘accomplishment’ was apparently he did do a good job of managing the Cerro Grande wildfire response in 2000. But that’s all.

    • paganguy

I’m guessing he hopes that by then we’d all be too stoned (legally) to much care about any of the rest. :/

  • Helen Damnation βœ“α΅›α΅‰Κ³αΆ¦αΆ αΆ¦α΅‰α΅ˆ

It is rather odd Governor Gary Johnson can make news cycle headlines by sticking out his tongue; Donald Dumpster has threatened to rule the world and rid the planet of people of color, in different ways and remarks, and nobody blinks an eye.

  • The worst thing that could happen to either Stein or Johnson would be more exposure and more questions about practical matters facing the country. Neither has a clue how things actually work or any actionable plans. (Neither does Trump for that matter.) The more any of them open their mouths the less I like them.

  • Robert Conner

    Cray-cray to right of them,

    Bonkers to left of them,

    Delusion in front of them

    Volleyed and thundered;

Stormed at with shot and shell,

    Desperately they stumbled,

    Into the jaws of Death,

    Into the mouth of hell

    The American republic.

  • PiperPine

I want to stress that I really respect Gary Johnson I lived in New Mexico when he was the governor there and I had met him formally and informally several times thanks to connections through UNM. He was, at the time, very personable, thoughtful, and intelligent. He knew how to talk about policy. I think he’s remained that way and while I wouldn’t vote for him for philosophical reasons I deeply respected the man for a number of reasons.

But wow is this just terrible. Just…. after spending years calling for more media attention and for the Libertarians to work for more media focus this is how he responds? Only a few short weeks after the Aleppo nonsense he does this. Was he not preparing? Did he not sit down with anyone to do basic interview work? This is terrible preparation for a major part of his campaign and it will go viral and further undermine his chances of being taken with even a mote of seriousness. What a boondoggle at a bad time.

    • This was the year that people might seriously look at Libertarians as an alternative, especially conservatives who aren’t religious/social conservatives. He just looks unprepared because he is. Not ready for prime time, as we used to say and not in the Gilda Radner/Dan Ackroyd way.
