Congressional Black Caucus Denounces Trump As “Two-Bit Racial Arsonist” & “Disgusting Fraud” [VIDEO]

Wow. This was great to watch. The Associated Press reports:

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus on Friday called Donald Trump a “disgusting fraud” and demanded that he apologize to President Barack Obama for repeatedly challenging the first African-American president’s U.S. citizenship before retreating from the claim on Friday.

One by one, outraged members of the CBC denounced the Republican presidential nominee who for five years was the chief promoter of the false notion that Obama was born somewhere other than Hawaii. Trump said in a brief statement Friday morning that Obama was “born in the United States, period.”

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called Trump a “two-bit racial arsonist” who has fanned the flames of bigotry and hatred. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., called Trump a “disgusting fraud” who had no proof of his false claims. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., said Trump is a liar.

The press conference was mostly a free promo for his hotel. Now we’ll see if the media does its job and calls him on his bullshit or just reports this as another day in the campaign.

I like that Rep. Clyburn said about the media needing to stop regurgitating whatever Trump says.

    • The_Wretched

I just shut off the Diane Rehm Show friday news roundup. They did point out that Trump magically grew an inch (6’2″ to 6’3″) on his medical report but otherwise said it was straight-up. Just repeating or reciting the Trump camp’s views is not enough. Accuracy demands more context and contradicting facts be carried along side the bullshit.

      • Westcoast88

By increasing his height by one inch, they can lower his BMI out of the obesity range, since his weight certainly isn’t going down.

        • The_Wretched

The weight number is also a lie.

    • dr morbius
      • MichaelJ

Thanks for sharing Tiabbi’s piece, which I read. That the public taste increasingly is less interested in and demanding of in-depth reporting is indisputable, and I agree that the American (US) is also guilty of the dumbing down of news reporting.

But with few exceptions the US news media has been all to willing to compromise its responsibility to report the news fairly and accurately, becoming more about providing the public the entertainment it demands and less about informing the public and increasing its knowledge. (I understand that some would disagree with my belief as to what the news media’s responsibility is.) When the media reports some blatantly false thing that Trump says without reporting on whatever evidence there is to either support or contradict what Trump (or any other public figure) says, that is a real problem. This is why I think what Rep. Clyburn said was so important.

Besides, Taibbi’s piece was more about the demand by some NY Times readers that negative reporting about Clinton needed to be toned down because it could hurt her chances of defeating Trump. I agree with Taibbi’s criticism of that sentiment.

        • Soren456

He has ruined his brand. In every important way, I’d guess, it’s worth next to nothing.

He will huff and puff and lie, but his name will never again be worth much of anything. He has become so tiresome, and imposed himself onto people so completely that it’s hard to imagine many people ever again responding positively to his marketing adventures.

          • CanuckDon

This is what I’m hoping to hear. The only thing to redeem faith in the nation will be seeing Trump’s reputation sour to the core.

          • popebuck1

From your lips to God’s ear, as the saying goes. My hope is that once that happens, the sharks will smell the blood in the water and close in. Trump has survived years of attacks solely on bluster and threats of prolonged legal action – once it becomes known he’s really broke and can’t actually back up those threats, the whole house of cards will collapse. I can’t imagine his various Russian creditors will be very pleased, to name just one example.

    • The_Wretched

I’m not holding my breath that the media will grow a sense of decency and actually start covering Trump now. Giving him a 20 minute free infomercial for a 2 second soundbite isn’t going to be enough. Even though Trump then then literally false imprisoned the pool producer for the Trump Tower renovation tour.

      • Cuberly

It seems the only time they start “reporting” is when they get their fee fees hurt. We’ll see…but yeah, I won’t hold my breath either.

    • SoCalGal20

The media needs to spend this weekend and take a long, hard look at their culpability in this mess and their utter failure to do the job they’ve been tasked with in our society. Not holding my breath but if at least some of them come around it will help. They were completely played. Fools.

      • Cuberly

Sure seems like a Bannon-styled trick really. Imagine if the media actually investigated that turd’s shameful history, along with the cesspool that is breitbart. Some tried but it fizzled out rather quickly.

Therefore, news cycle captured….mischief managed. Ugh!

      • Westcoast88

I’ve stopped watching CNN. They keep inviting Trump surrogates on every show to shout their talking points as an answer to every question. The CNN hosts are not in control.

      • BudClark

I think at least SOME of the older reporters have NOT been taken in by his bullshit … like those who remember Father Coughlin, McCarthy, etc. …

        • SoCalGal20

That may be right but they’re a dying a breed. And there’s this disturbing trend I see from some reporters and editors on twitter to either bristle at legit criticism or to blame the voters, as if the media has nothing to do with people’s perception of the candidates. There is no sense of journalistic responsibility with some of these supposed journalists. We really need some quality not-for-profit highly visible media right now. Corporate media is running us into the ground.

      • LaChatSayWha

I fear that members of the media are only looking at their own professional futures when they consider a Trump presidency. They’ll have plenty of crap to cycle into their programs day after day.

Trump has committed TREASON this cycle and they’ve allowed it. It made a good news cycle.

I do think a report or twenty on his connections to Russian oligarchs, politicians and security organizations might scuttle him. For that very reason, I think we won’t see incisive investigations of those relationships because it would be killing the goose laying the golden eggs.

        • SoCalGal20

Yeah but they should know Trump would not be good for the press. Then again, the corporate overlords don’t care about afunction free press. That’s been evident for years.

Between the mixed messages and contradictions from his flying lie monkeys to his fraudulent and insulting “press conference” this morning, this could represent a very, very damaging miscalculation on Trump and his campaign’s part. You can put lipstick on a pig, but the pig will do what pigs do and shove his nose into the mud and that pretty shit washes off.

Love it… great, powerful speeches by all of them. Totally on the mark. But of course, Trump’s legions of racist followers will just see it as more “uppity black folk” trying to cause trouble for their White Knight in not-so Shiny Armor. Everything about the guy is absolutely sickening. And just gets worse. How can his polling and numbers possibly be increasing and supposedly passing Hillary in critical states?? Are they only polling the racist rednecks?

    • RoFaWh

“Everything about the guy is absolutely sickening.”

      Namely:

      ⬛ his ludicrous hairdo
      ⬛ his hair dye job
      ⬛ his white raccoon eyes
      ⬛ his red skin
⬛ his habit of pursing his lips, then thrusting them outwards before emitting more lies. This mannerism reminds me of nothing so much as the display of a well developed rosebud.
⬛ his endless lies about anything and everything.
⬛ his profound ignorance of just about everything
⬛ his malignant narcissistic personality disorder
⬛ his pretense of great wealth when in fact he’s technically bankrupt.

  • SU – Root

I bet those military traitors ended up scratching their heads as well. They probably had no idea this was about birtherism.

  • Boy Elvis

Good, good. Set Drumpf up to openly insult minorities. His bullshit can work against him; we saw that with the gold star Muslim family.

  • I still don’t understand why Trump isn’t polling in the low 20s. It’s not like it isn’t obvious he’s a racist, sexist, xenophobic monster-bigot who, every single day, displays abysmal ignorance, compulsive lying, rampant narcissism and the absolute opposite of how America’s President should behave. He’s a bully and a craven coward who, when faced directly by those he’s been insulting invariably folds like a cheap oversized suit.

And I refuse to believe that nearly half of America’s voters are fine with all this. He’s a national embarrassment, a fraud, and almost certainly a corrupt unindicted criminal.

    What the ever-loving FUCK?!

    • Ninja0980

Because Hillary e-mails blah blah blah Benganzi blah blah Clinton foundation, 30 years of smears against Hillary and a media that lets Trump lie and lie and a part of the population that is sexist, racist, homophobic that have no problem with what Trump is doing or saying.
Throw in the folks on the left that want a unicorn candidate and here we are.

      • Best (albeit depressingly insightful) answer so far. Thanks, Ninja.

      • NancyP

        1. 40% of the US population is nakedly racist.
        2. The mainstream media are not doing their job of fact-checking, addressing substantive issues. All they do is to report the horse race and do so in a way acceptable to the Republican CEOs of the multimedia/entertainment companies that own the mainstream media. There is no such thing as “independent” mainstream media. Plus, those tv reporters and pundits are now paid upper middle class salaries or higher – so are social liberals and fiscal conservatives – classic country club Republicans – great example is the useless David Brooks.

        • Nick in Pasadena

There are certainly many ignorant conservatives blinded by their own bigotry, but many of the affluent and seemingly intelligent conservatives see all too well what a disaster President Trump would be in almost every respect–including crippling the American economy and placing us in real danger of nuclear war. This affects them and their loved ones. Their support of Trump will only go so far–the question is when the worms will turn (and it had better be soon!).

    • tcinsf

The logical conclusion is that America is much more racist, sexist, xenophobic, and full of monster bigots than either of us were willing to believe.

      • Ninja0980

Sad to say but as members of a minority group, we do in fact know that already.
Just a shame so many others don’t.

      • LoveCoates

What’s funny is that black people and enlightened whites have been saying this for a while now and keep being told to stop playing the race card.

    • Mark

It is a terrible comment on our country but racism, bigotry, misogyny, and on ‘n on ‘n on, are alive and well in the United States. It just took this orange tinted person to bring it out in the open and make it “acceptable” to practice it and espouse it. As has always been said, Fascism will come to the United States wrapped in the flag and carrying the bible.

      • Only in Donald’s case, it’s a Bible that’s never actually been opened or read, seeing as how it never reaches the top of the “Favorite Hitler Speeches” book pile.

        • Larry in Oklahoma

If he’d even looked at it he would have known it’s not TWO CORINTHIANS.

      • Ninja0980

Indeed, Donald Trump simply refused to use the dog whistles other Republicans in the past have done but it’s NOT new.
It’s how Nixon and St. Ronnie helped get themselves elected and it’s how Trump is trying to get elected.

    • another_steve

Lots of people share your disbelief, Becca.

I hold that a solid 20-25 of voting Americans are hardcore racist homophobic misogynistic theofascists. KKK stuff. Trump’s core base. I think another 15-20 percent of voters don’t fall into that category but are hardcore Republicans who (forgive the triteness here) would vote for Adolf Hitler if he were the Republican nominee.

I predict Trump will definitely get at least 40 percent of the popular vote on November 8.

      • Homo Erectus

Romney got nearly half of the 47% he didn’t care about fer chrissake!

    • Uncle Mark

It’s obvious to us, but unfortunately, when I see certain family members, who are confronted with the list of Trump’s lies and failings, their only reply is “Hillary is worse,” or “I just don’t trust her,” or “They all do that.” The sad truth is they don’t actually like Trump at all, but have been conditioned by the RWNJ (and spouses) to hate the Clintons more. It’s willful ignorance.

      • LaChatSayWha

I’ve heard the same things from otherwise (seemingly) thoughtful people living in SF. First of all, they dislike Hillary so very, very much, usually because “she’s corporate” or “she’s a liar.” They also say that “all politicians are the same.” And they end with “He won’t be that bad. And at least it will be exciting, huh?”

Unsurprisingly, these are mostly straight white people, fairly well-off and formerly left-wing-ish. I was gobsmacked the first time I heard this from someone whom I had formerly considered sane. I’ve concluded that they just have a lot less on the line than others. And perhaps they’re at the age where the think their money will protect them. It’s both depressing and enraging.

    • Homo Erectus

He loves un-educated voters – just ask anybody.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

While listening to NPR, they occasionally interview Trump fans and they keep blabbing about that stupid slogan “He’s going to make America great again” like they’re besotted high school freshmen. They don’t know how they just know it!

    • Gerry Fisher

IMO, there are still a huge number of people who “just vote Republican.” Yesterday, we drove from Baltimore to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. The Maryland Eastern Shore is known to be conservative. Still, I was struck by the high volume of Trump signs; I didn’t see a single Hillary sign. I don’t think that the “I always vote Republican” crowd truly gets how bad Trump is. They’re used to tuning out criticism of their candidates, and they don’t understand how deadly it is to do that this time around.
