KENTUCKY: Father On TLC’s “Quiverfull” Christian Reality Show The Willis Family Arrested For Child Rape

Yet another scandal for one of TLC’s Christian reality shows. NBC News reports:

The patriarch of a family featured on the TLC reality television show “The Willis Family” was arrested Friday and charged with rape of a child stemming from an alleged sexual encounter around 12 years ago, authorities said. Toby Nathaniel Willis, 46, was arrested in Greenville, Kentucky, by agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the bureau said in a statement. The TBI said Willis traveled to Kentucky “in an effort to avoid law enforcement.”

The law enforcement agency said authorities began investigating Willis on Aug. 29, and agents “developed information Willis had a sexual encounter approximately 12 years ago with an underage female.” More details were not released. The TBI said the investigation remains ongoing. Willis is featured in the TLC show about a musical family in Nashville. The network apparently removed the show’s page from its website Saturday. TLC did not immediately return requests for comment.

From Raw Story:

Willis and his wife Brenda — like Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar — are Quiverfull parents, adherents to a Christian dominionist sect that encourages married couples to produce as many offspring as possible in order to raise an army of believers. The word “Quiverfull” comes from the Old Testament Psalms of the Christian Bible. Psalm 127 says, “Children are a blessing from the Lord…happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.”

The Duggar family has had problems of its own, with eldest son Josh confessing to molesting underage girls — including his sisters — as a teen. Then Josh was revealed to have cheated on his wife through the website Ashley Madison. When reached for comment about Willis’ arrest, a spokesperson for TLC said, “We are shocked to hear this news.”

Once again demonstrating that those who claim to have some kind of moral authority – usually through religion – are almost certainly trying to not only convince others of that fact, but themselves as well.

      One might even say deplorable.

His press release is going to go something like this:
Yeah, maybe I did, but that was years ago, when I was a sinner. Now I’ve been forgiven by god, so you can’t press charges. You’re persecuting me because I’m holy. And besides, she seduced me.

      • vorpal

God: because ACTUALLY taking personal responsibility for your actions can be hard and unpleasant.

        • Personal responsibility is for non-conservatives. Christian conservatives repent.

      • Chucktech

And besides THAT, isn’t the statute of limitations for crimes like this pig committed long since expired? Isn’t it an appallingly low 7 years?

        • Scott Carpenter

I think I read that he’d fled the state to avoid prosecution after charges were brought. That’s an automatic “Get Into Jail Free” card in most places – with no statute of limitations.

        He’ll blame the child victim.

TLC shitstain: “Oh! How accomplished! Here’s your TV show!”

      • Octoberfurst

I wonder about that too. You would think that TLC would have to know by now that these religious nutjobs are bad news. But yet they hold them up as exemplary human beings who should be emulated. That is until they get caught raping kids. >sigh<

  • Gustav2

When can we shut down this child sex ring called the “Quiverfull” ?

  • Michael Smith

Is there some kind of rule in that Quiverfull movement that you must give your children a name that starts with J? They have 12 kids with names that start with J.

    • Acronym Jim

And not one of them is named “Hay-soos.”

      Funny, that.

      • David Walker

    • LackofFaithify

Actually, it may be. Had a friend growing up who’s family was into this stuff. 13 kids at last count i believe and ALL J names. Really a bit creepy when you don’t have much of a clue about who your siblings are even though in theory they are all from the same parents.

Or maybe they are apart of the abuse and that is how the shows are made

      • Ginger Snap

It’s the duty of Touching Little Childre…sorry, I mean The Learning Channel to exploit the fuck out of these unconscionable people.’ Did that come out right? Oh, jeez. I meant ‘to present these wholesome xn alternative lifestyles.’ There. That should do it. Send that to the usual press types. Thanks, you plucky little wench. Still want some ‘dinner’ later?”

        • nocadrummer

I MUST be old. I can remember when you could actually LEARN something on “The Learning Channel”. That is, something other than “trailer trash” will continue to live and behave like trailer trash, even with millions to spend.

Which reminds me, whatever happened to “morals clauses”? You know, where they lost their contracts & money if they did something incredibly stupid on purpose. Say, like raping children?

          • David Walker

As I recall, TLC was started by a program director at a PBS station who liked the philosophy but not the pay check. I’m not sure what happened, but he left quite a while ago. As for the morals clause, it may well be in some contracts. However, I think we’ve seen that a morals clause is a minor consideration when stacked up against the millions to be made off white trash degenerates. I’ve read that the Duggars even got final approval on crew members. 5 years ago, I’d have thought, “No way.” Now it doesn’t surprise me at all.

Stonewall and Jedi are definitely playing for a different team. 🙂

    • Chucktech

Slightly tangent to that, when I saw this article on another news site, I had no idea who the fuck these people were and the article on didn’t mention anything about their religion. Just that, like the Duggars, NBC said, it’s another black eye for TLC. But I just KNEW that these looked like some pious, holier-than-thou, gawdly family a la the Duggars. Sure enough, that’s exactly what this scum is the patriarch of.

  • marshlc

I’m an old person who was raised as a Catholic, back in the days before all the Catholics said “Screw what the Pope says” and went on the pill. So I went to school with kids from families this big, and my own family – there were six of us – was a normal and totally unremarkable size.

And our moms never looked anything like this woman, or the Duggarmother. Beautiful long hair? No, thin grey hair scraped back in a bun or ponytail, or else cut short. Decent figure for a middle-aged lady? No, either slat thin or lumpy baggy bodies that looked pregnant even when she wasn’t. And that’s if you saw the mothers of the really big families at all – they seldom left the house.

And the kids either ran wild, or went straight home after school and were never seen, because they had chores at home.

Don’t really know what I’m getting at here, except that I smell a rat. I’ve known quite a few families of twelve, fourteen, fifteen kids, and they’re nothing like this. Maybe they just rent all those kids….

    • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild
    • Scott Carpenter

I was raised Mormon. My cousin was told, after her 7th child in 6 years, that if she got pregnant again, it would probably kill her. Her husband told the doctor that if she died, she’d die doing god’s will. My bishop (equivalent to a catholic priest) had 14 kids. Bishop’s kids ran wild, and some of them wound up in jail or prison, that was just accepted.
This whole “god’s army” thing just frightens me – and is a big reason I’m a liberal who owns firearms.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

What a horrible husband! I bet he thought some poor younger woman with a newer uterus would appear in a jiffy to replace her just like he prayed for.

I think that a lot of these huge families depend on the older kids to raise the younger ones and if that fails, it fails spectacularly.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I also don’t get why the women don’t show outwardly what a dozen pregnancies do to one. Even one or two pregnancies often make quite a few changes.

In the case of the TV families, I am guessing plastic surgery, Spandex and a tub of makeup (and most of the actual parenting is dumped on the older girls & maybe help from a secret maid or two) but I can’t help but think the non-famous Quiverfulls actually do look like the women you remember.

  • Talisman

Child molesters often pick whatever gender’s more convenient.

    • Todd20036

Pesos usually pick their own gender because they have easier access to them. People aren’t surprised to see men around boys or women around girls.

In some circumstances, girls are more accessible to men than boys, so you get what happened here.

  • TerrenceEncore Jones

This show is going to pulled entirely off the air waves right? Nowhere to be seen again right?

    • Palmer

It’ll be taken off the air for “retooling” and be back in a few months.

Retooling in this case means some bullshit therapy for the molester, or similar nonsense.

    • Cuberly

TLC cancelled it last April, that’s what the article said.

Wonder if they’ll continue with their plans to have a “special” Duggar episode where Josh gets to spill his guts and beg forgiveness yada yada….(yep, this is a thing they’re supposedly working on.)

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

God is NOT going to suddenly give us more resources. You do know that right?

If you must have 12 children why don’t you actually do the Christian thing and FUCKING adopt them!

    • Treant

They wouldn’t fucking adopt them, they’d adopt them for fucking. Obviously.

    • thatotherjean

They do that, too–usually from underdeveloped countries, sometimes in bunches, whether or not they can afford them, believing they’re saving heathen children. When adoptions don’t work out–when the kids don’t adapt well to fundy religion and discipline–they’ve been known to pass them on to other fundy families without bothering to inform their state’s social services agencies, the adoption agency, or the kids’ country of origin. And they think they’re being so damned holy.

      • Jay Silversmith

It’s more about getting government subsidies than saving heathen children.

  • James

First of all, when it’s sex with a minor it’s not an “encounter,” it’s rape.

Second, why is TLC constantly allowing these cults to use their airwaves to spread their political propaganda?

    • As I indicated in my comment, TLC has decided its niche market — which used to be educational programming (i.e. The LEARNING Channel) — is now human freak shows.

People who live their lives as a practicing cult — especially those involving unusual sexual practices such as cranking out as many babies as one woman’s uterus can sustain — are among the easiest freaks to find.

      • IamM

That’s what I thought before, now I’m thinking maybe it’s worse than that. Like Dominionists or alt-right or something in influential positions or something.

        • Reality.Bites

They’re owned by Discovery Communications, who also own American Heroes Channel, Animal Planet, Destination America, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, Investigation Discovery, Oprah Winfrey Network, Science and Velocity.

I don’t think they have any agenda beyond making money.

Their channel started out, like many others, serving a particular niche taste. And what they discovered (no pun intended) is that most people regardless of their niche interests, enjoy reruns of shows from their youth and early adulthood, new scripted shows about people like themselves or like they wish they were, but either way more attractive, and trashy reality shows about people they can feel superior to even if they’re supermodel hot.

          • IamM

I’m aware of the general history and market factors you mention, I’m just saying there’s enough clustering in the data points to make you wonder if there’s something behind it besides just a willingness to air trash for profit.

Yes, so far not nearly enough blips to say ‘there probably is’ but just enough to start wondering if maybe it’s not a coincidence.

Betting against that would be a sure loss of one’s money. Of course, he has to have spoken against the evils of The Gay and how children are put in jeopardy by us! That’s required if one is in the public eye espousing the blessings of wife, home, and many children. God requires that, or at least God’s mouthpieces require that.

  • Hank

Just wonder how many of these kids will eventually “come out”!! /s

That means she was 12 or under.

    Tennessee “statutory rape” laws:
    (a) Statutory rape is sexual penetration of a victim by the defendant or of the
defendant by the victim when the victim is at least thirteen (13) but less
than eighteen (18) years of age and the defendant is at least four (4) years
    older than the victim.

Tennessee “rape of a child” laws:
    (a) Rape of a child is the unlawful sexual penetration of a victim by the defendant or the defendant by a victim, if the victim is more than three (3) years of age but less than
thirteen (13) years of age. (b) (1) Rape of a child is a Class A felony.

Let me fucking guess; Home schooling for his kids?

  • Kenster999

I wonder if there’s going to eventually be a silver lining to this movement: with such large families, there’s more likely to be gay kids, which *might* lead them to reject homophobic beliefs once they realize they have a gay person in their family. The Lord works in mysterious ways, indeed!

    • boatboy_srq

It’s either that, or science WILL find the genetic markers for non-heterosexuality, and the Quiverfull wingnuts will embrace abortion on order to inhibit queer offspring. Worth it? I don’t think so.

      • McSwagg

If the offspring carry the ‘gay’ genetic marker, then so do the parents they inherited it from. If they are going to abort the fetus, then they must also eliminate the parent to be consistent. Sadly, we know consistency is not a feature of their cult.

  • ExGayTherapyKills

Straight Christian and Catholic pedophiles lead the top people who rape and abuse children.

    • McSwagg

I doubt you intended to imply that catholics weren’t christians, but it is a common claim among the evilgelicals of the south were I grew up.

  • TheManicMechanic

From now on, it should be automatically assumed that every over-the-top crazy evangelical is a heinous child molester, rapist, or criminal of the highest order making a lot of noise in order to hide and deflect from that fact.

  • Duane Dimitrov

I am shocked that these Good Christians™ with their precious, precious principles and moral superiority could be casught doing something like this!

It’s unthikable! They’re CHRISTIANS! I mean, hello!, they have a PATENT on morality! They alone are the judges of others!

    I. Am. Shocked.

TLC has turned into “Perp Central.”

  • um, ick? TLC is freaking me out. are they doing this on purpose? producers usually research and do background on potential “reality tv” folks. i think i will never click that channel again. srsly. “touching little children” should not be a show and isn’t entertaining or funny in any way.
