NEW YORK CITY: Babs Roasts Trump At Hillary’s LGBT Fundraiser With Parody Of Send In The Clowns [VIDEO]

The video below isn’t very good but the audio is decent. The Washington Post reports:

Isn’t it rich? Broadway legend and Hillary Clinton supporter Barbra Streisand lampooned maybe-billionaire Donald Trump before a crowd of wealthy Democrats on Friday night, to the tune of “Send In The Clowns.” Yes, that Broadway classic from 1973 that you now cannot get out of your head (you’re welcome) was repurposed as a gag at a Clinton fundraiser targeting gay donors and featuring Streisand. Clinton spoke and Streisand sang seven songs at the New York eatery Cipriani, part of a blitz of fundraising events organized recently for Clinton as the presidential race tightened. Unlike most previous fundraising events, this one was opened to Clinton’s traveling press pool for news coverage.

Here are the lyrics.

VERSE 1
IS HE THAT RICH?
MAYBE HE’S POOR?
’TIL HE REVEALS HIS RETURNS
WHO CAN BE SURE?
WHO NEEDS THIS CLOWN?

VERSE 2
SOMETHING’S AMISS
I DON’T APPROVE
IF HE WERE RUNNING THE FREE WORLD,
WHERE WOULD WE MOVE?
NAME ME A TOWN?
JUST WHO IS THIS CLOWN?

BRIDGE
AND WHEN WE THOUGHT WE’D HEARD IT ALL
HUFFING AND PUFFING ABOUT HIS BIG FANTASY WALL
MAKING HIS ENTRANCE ON STAGE…
HE JUST SHOOTS FROM THE HIP
HE’S FULL OF BULL
HE’S LOST HIS GRIP!

VERSE 3
AND IF BY CHANCE
HE GETS TO HEAV’N
EVEN UP THERE HE’LL DECLARE…
CHAPTER ELEV’N!
WHO’D HIRE THIS CLOWN?
THIS SAD VULGAR CLOWN…
“YOU’RE FIRED” YOU CLOWN!

BRIDGE 2
HILLARY’S KIND…
SMART THAT IS CLEAR
WHILE SHE IS GIVING US HOPE…TRUMP IS SELLING US FEAR
LOOK HOW HE CHANGES HIS VIEWS EVERY TIME THAT HE SPEAKS
IT’S LIE AFTER LIE
CAN’T TAKE EIGHT MORE WEEKS!

VERSE 4
THIS IS NO FARCE
MAYBE HE’S BROKE?
IS THIS “THE ART OF HIS DEAL”
OR SOME AWFUL JOKE?
YOU’VE GOT TO ADMIT…
THIS SILLY HALF-WIT…
IS SO FULL OF …

    Bravissima!

  • Sam_Handwich

this video is better, but cuts off the end of the song

    • Joe in PA

      Thanks Sam.

    • Robincho

Yo, Grace. Would “You’re Welcome” have put you over the 140? And don’t look now, but it’s a lampoon, not a harpoon…

      • Todd20036

        Both words work actually

      • Dazzer

Harpoon works. Actually it’s cleverer than lampoon.

        • Robincho

On the heels of “Your Welcome”, any cleverness is inadvertent…

  • bkmn

Misogynistic Trump will not be happy about being lampooned by two women. Good.

  • Ernest Endevor

OK. I’ll start the rumor: Steve Sondheim wrote the lyric. You heard it first on JMG.

  • Smokey

    Sadly,
    “Don’t bother, they’re here.”

    for 8 more weeks. Sigh

    • BobSF_94117

I hope it doesn’t get like a car accident, when everything around you seems to slow down to an impossible rate, every instant standing out in high detail.

  • canoebum

I think that was Stephen Sondheim at the table in the foreground.

  • before a crowd of wealthy Democrats

there’s some irony here, right? no, really. you don’t get to mock drumpf for being rich, when you’re whole campaign is paid for by… rich peeps?

i’m just trying to be basic and logical here, folks. not throwing flames, not starting a war. just, you know, basic logic. dumpf IS a “clown,” but that’s not even the point. blerg, i apologize, but rich peeps calling out other rich peeps just makes me ill. drumpf isn’t even electable at this point. now, it ‘s just a game of “make me a higher ranking staffer! look at what i can do!” barf

oh, i wish any of these people would show up in muy hood for just five fucking minutes. please, tell them where i live, dare them to come here.

    • JT

drumpf isn’t even electable at this point.

It must be good to be so confident of that.

      • sweetie, i’ve been so over and back again on that map, it’s not even funny. but no. my professional opinion? (it’s a good one, UC PhD etc)? is that yeah, today, now? it’s in the bag for her. yeah! vagina president is going to work, like black president worked. it’s the 21st c. etc.

at this point, it’s a clown show, nothing more. enjoy. i’ll be doing DS9 reruns etc. we can talk about myth later, when i’m more mellow. you folks will get what you want. let’s see how that works out, in two years. can i save your comments? i don’t normally do so without asking.

        • JT

Honey, what you’re seeing is the map at present. Notice the difference between polls and polls plus, do you? Maybe there’s something underlying? Things can develop.

Don’t try to out credential others here. You might be surprised.

          • i’m not sure what JT or dan is trying to argue right now. gawdammit, head injury this isn’t fair. anyway. but be like the rest of the peeps in my life right now; “you aren’t what you say you are.”

two years, bitches. if i am still alive, i will Fuck with You. She is Not the One.

Bernie people like me kept trying to tell you: you’re a sucker. you give money to whom? no, really. think about it. where does your money actually go? do you know, have you traced it?

Does anyone else remember oblmamamama’s first two years? the congressional majority the dems had? did gay rights get passed then? ooops.

i have to take aspirin every day now. krist this sucks. all i am saying, and for ffs i am not wearing the foil. HRC is not going to make anything better. you will pay more in taxation. there will be another “war.” halliburton will make more money. i will not be proven wrong in two years’ time.

stop picking on an old sick woman who can’t even see most of the time. but i can see this; it’s more glaring than my zinnias. all i’m saying is bite it back, don’t go there, don’t dip you head in shit. so do Not associate yourselves with her, just b/c she was “at the forefront” of gay rights. she wasn’t. she isn’t. she loves your money. stop giving it to her, find a downstate which is a better use of your money. please. i can’t. all i can do is register new voters. do that as well. but stop, please stop, giving your money to the “i’ve got it in the bag” candidate. that is not that race that matters, right now.

it’s depressing and shocking to me how many JMG readers are “write a check, and forget it” type people. that’s sad.

          • Dubito et cogitare

“stop picking on an old sick woman who can’t even see most of the time.”

Um, you are the one who started this pissing match. No one else did.

          • JT

I think you need a time out.

          • sigh, i guess ur right. sorry, everybody. this is what happens when you r alone and have a head injury. show some compassion, if you know what that is. i’m very alone, and sick, and the state isn’t helping me at all. /pity party/

          • GayOldLady

CD…I’ve not walked in your shoes, although I’ve had some very difficult times. Please take a break for a while and attend to your health and emotional needs. In the meantime Please call this number, 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), and be safe. There are resources and people who will help, you just have to get pointed in the right direction. PEACE!

          • karmanot

Give em hell. CD! naturally the pissant trolls will dine on this.

          • joe ho

            lol.

          • JT

You’re not really interested in her state of well being, are you?

          • danolgb

Bernie lost in a fair election. Get the fuck over it. He was not the best candidate. He ran unprepared campaign who scapegoated others for their failures. That does not a president make.
Also, we may have had a majority for the first two years of Obama’s administration, but we did not have a super majority. That’s what it takes and people with your attitude who prefer to be victims instead of actually getting shit done don’t help.

          • Joe in PA

super majority…. An inconvenient fact so OFTEN overlooked. I remember how frustrating that period was.

          • Matt Rogers

“Does anyone else remember oblmamamama’s first two years? the congressional majority the dems had? did gay rights get passed then? ooops.”

Just to be clear, the Republicans had a 60% rule to pass any bill. So the Democratic majority lasted only 4 months for practical purposes.

          • JustSayin’

            Ding ding ding!

        • danolgb

I don’t think you realize that your smugness doesn’t help your arguments. Also, never underestimate a celebrity in today’s environment. Remember California voted for a Republican Governor twice based on celebrity status. The rest of the country is even more stupid.

        • joe ho

your distorted thinking is showing again. are you in therapy?

        • abel

I hope you’re right, certainly, but Trump scares me. I see too many people, including a surprising number of YOUNG people who have bought into the GOP “Hillary is a crook” meme, and who see Trump as a non-politician savior of some kind. Even if, as I hope, Trump loses, the fact that he will do as well as he does is very unnerving. Should he win, then it will be time to go gently into that good night, as far as I’m concerned. In the meantime, I CAN’T enjoy this. Just too scary.

        • Dubito et cogitare

For someone with a UC PhD, you have a remarkably infantile way of expressing your opinions.

        • JustSayin’

It always amazes me the claims you make, even in your money beg on go fund me. Which funny enough you posted here on JMG.

You claim you are so smart, know so many people, have so many connections and experiences, but you spend your time here comp!aining how broke you are and bagging on rich people.

You state in your money beg you would work 18 hours a day mopping floors at mcdonalds “if you have too” but strangely you sit there with your hand out for money clearly NOT MOPPING FLOORS, or even applying for that job.

If you know all those people, have that much education and experience, why are you, by your claims, broke and soon to be homeless?

In the past you claimed to be a marine with ptsd, you have said you were rated by the VA. If so you have a pension and funny enough as a rated pensioneer the VA offers short term loans and grants to cover housing issues…but hey you being so smart and knowing so much would know that, right?

Babs is bagging on his claims of being super-rich, not just rich, but even that fact is not good enough for CD standards. No to you only those you find acceptably poor enough get to complain about his supposed unproven mega-wealth.

You are boring and transparent. Please stop the cons lies and other drivel.

      • Ross

The math ain’t good for Donnie boy.

Today, from 538, their Now-cast forecast:

        • JT

Yes, we’ve all seen that. Polls plus and underlying factors are what can cause problems.

          • Ross

            And here is Poll-plus.

The math still ain’t good for Donnie boy.

          • JT

There is a difference, no? That’s the point and how it can develop. We can all see the numbers.

          • Ross

Yes, there is a difference in all three 538 forecasts.

But all three show the same unmistakable thing:

The math ain’t good for Donnie boy.

          • JT

The point is that the difference indicates underlying factors. Things can change. The “math” you cite is today’s math. The double standard of media coverage can also play into that.

          • Ross

And today’s math ain’t good for Donnie boy.

And the math has NEVER been good for Donnie boy.

And Donnie boy has pissed off SO many demographic groups that the math suddenly improving in his favor seems highly highly highly unlikely.

          • JT

As I said, that today’s math–and yesterday’s. There are a lot of undecideds. And there are a lot of underlying factors. Remember, this started as a cautionary remark about overconfidence.

          • Ross

And we could all be killed by a meteor tomorrow.

So…I guess I will plan my day accordingly.

I mean, it MIGHT happen, right? It might!

          • JT

Right, because the likelihood of Drumpf winning is equal to the likelihood of your being hit by a meteorite.

          • Ross

It is HIGHLY unlikely that we will all be killed by a meteor tomorrow.

It is HIGHLY unlikely, too, that Donnie boy will get elected in November, based on the current Electoral math.

          • JT

The probabilities are wildly different, which was the point of my rejoinder to your sarcasm.

Again, beware of overconfidence based on current math.

          • Ross

            I am not overconfident.

I lost that quality decades ago.

          • JT

I’m glad to hear it. I hope that means that you will act accordingly.

          • Ross

Let me put this another way.

If I believed that Donnie boy stood a good chance of winning, I would become instantly and DEEPLY depressed. I am not kidding.

I would be unable to get out of bed, much less deal with my business. My 100% customer satisfaction rating would plummet. My income would crash.

All the while I would be hooked up to an IV filled with vodka, while I sucked my thumb as tears rolled down my cheeks.

But…but…by paying attention to the math…I see…HOPE! There is HOPE! And I cling to this hope desperately. This HOPE allows me to breathe another day, to attend to my business, and feel some joy.

So, please know that I am anything but overconfident.

            But I am hopeful.

These are two very different things.

          • JT

Of course, there’s hope and there should be. What there shouldn’t be is overconfidence, especially to the point of holding that there is no further work to be done. That was the starting point of my post that you responded to.

          • Ross

Did I state that there is no further work to be done?

          • JT

Hey, bud. You need to go back and reread the starting point of this thread. You might realize what it’s been all about.

          • Ross

            I know the starting point.

I also know that you have responded to me nine times.

My point all along has been to state that the math ain’t good for Donnie boy.

Your point has been to warn against overconfidence.

But your point does not negate my point. And I never stated that Donnie would lose.

            But I hope he does.

          • JT

You were responding in a line that started with a caution against overconfidence. Your citations do not invalidate that point as I have indicated over and over to you.

        • Matt Rogers

If you scroll down a little from that map, you’ll see that Donnie’s numbers are low but have been on an upward trajectory since about August 15. It looks like they may be leveling off over the past few days, but we can’t take anything for granted.

          • Ross

I take nothing for granted about this fuckin’ crazy election!

The 538 numbers are always up/down. They are never a flat line.

What is important is the overall trend. And that trend shows a consistent Electoral win for Hillary.

Oh, 538 considers their Poll-plus forecast to be the most accurate of what will happen in November.

Their Now-cast tell us what is happening today. And, today, Hillary has a nice uptick:

    • Joe in PA

FUNDAMENTAL difference CD is that THESE rich people obviously don’t want to take your money away and are willing to pay more in taxes and HELP other people. Don’t paint all rich people with the same brush.

    • Dubito et cogitare

Actually, until Citizens United is overturned, you ARE just throwing flames. Either that, or bitterly envious. Regardless, just because someone has money does not make them a bad person any more than being poor makes someone a good person, no matter WHAT hood in which they live.

    • Ross

You wrote: “when [your] whole campaign is paid for by… rich peeps?”

Ahhh, I am not a rich peep.

And I have donated to Hillary four times. And plan to do so again.

My small-town postmaster also loves Hillary. And she donates a small amount every month.

There are many millions of us non-rich donors.

      • yes there are! just like was true in the Bernie hoard, the edwards camp, hell all the way to Dean! before they all flamed out!

politics are fun. but can we please, please just not kid ourselves. by that i am saying “you, and me, and some other people who don’t agree on all things, but some things.”

it’s a nice myth that individual donors like you, are paying for 1/14min worth of advertising in this “battleground” state. but that’s just, well, silly. 36$/donor does not equal blanket coverage in a host of states, and that is what is happening right now. i don’t know where you live, but i live in one of these states, as do more than a few friends and professionals i know.

iirc your point is that Little People give money to presidential campaigns. Good for You! i myself will be more efficiently giving my limited donation money to causes that actually help people in need. have a nice day, i need to go check my head bandage now and will get back to this thread at a later time. but trust me, HRC doesn’t “need” your money. if she did, i wouldn’t be seeing an ad for her, or against drumpf, every five fucking mns on every channel b/f i cllick over to netflix, which is blessedly free of political ads.

        • JustSayin’

What money could you have? By your claims in your money beg on go fund me you are broke and about to be evicted..not that i believe a damn word you say. Get off your bitchy high horse and tell the truth for a change.

          • money = time. how many have you registered, new voters? what’s you count, personally? HRC spends big money doing that. i work for the right causes, for free. i have a list of people who voted this year for the first time b/c me. how about you, bitch?

          • oh, and all those (double digit) voting this fall b/c me? yeah, they also under 45, and not white. please, try to be superior to me. with your checkbook and your grey face. you will fail. also, none of them are religious.

    • Zollergasse

There’s a difference- they’re rich people who aren’t assholes and actually give a shit.

      • i want to believe those exist. please, introduce us. i already know a lot of rich people. absolutely none of them give a shit about my neighbors and all of them want and vote and support causes in which the ideal result is them paying less in taxes.

    • Niblet58

Her WHOLE campaign? Really? Any data supporting that?

    • Matt Rogers

For the last reporting period, the average contribution to Clinton’s campaign was $50 and 98% of contributions were smaller than $250. That’s a bit higher-dollar than Bernie Sanders, but it hardly suggests that “rich peeps” are paying for her whole campaign.

  • The Professor

Atta gurl. And a #1 Album at 74 to boot. Gotta love her.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Klowns?? Is there some connection between Trump and all these mysterious clown sitings? Who are these deplorable Klowns “standing silently by roadsides, lurking near laundromats and trying to lure children into the woods with bags of cash and green laser lights.”?

Unfortunately turns out the guy made it up, which is a shame cause evil clowns luring children into the woods is what wonderful nightmares are made of.

yes and a stephen king novel, “It”

I know right. It should be spelled KKKlowns.

It would be irresponsible not to speculate.

Who is this Fuckface Von Clownstick?

That was so awesome. Wish I was there.

  • another_steve

Lol. Fabulous. Everything the Babs does is fabulous.

Last year, the man and I were lucky enough to hear Judy Collins perform her amazing version of that song at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore.

Girl is 77, and still sings like an angel.

    • licuado de platano

She’s coming to perform at a very small venue in my town, just two days before the elections. (Evanston Space on 11/6).

      • another_steve

Collins has been recording and touring with Ari Hest — a very talented (and very gorgeous) singer/songwriter.

I saw them together in Baltimore. Perhaps you will too, at your 11/6 event.

    • Cattleya1

Thanks! That really made today for me. Old broads rock!

Imminent Twitter Meltdown. This will definitely get little Donnie’s knickers in a twist.

Of course it will go something like, “Barbra Streisand is a loser. She has no talent. She’s never really accomplished anything. She can’t sing. She can’t act. She can’t direct or produce.”

      • Treant

Personally, I’d expect more of a dog whistle. “Babs sticks her nose in where it doesn’t belong. Huge nose. Sad.”

      • JustSayin’

Dont forget she is ugly with a big nose

        • Joe in PA

OT but I’m going through my twitter feed and I saw a couple of things.

Actual thing idiot Frank Luntz said.

Also, this story in WaPo about how and why Trump’s lies work for him and his campaign. It’s pretty depressing.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2016/09/09/trumps-nonstop-lies-are-only-getting-more-brazen-heres-why-it-works-for-him/?utm_term=.85c27447cd41

    • danolgb

Yes. If Obama were the dictator the right accuses him of being, he could come up with propaganda saying he has a 100% approval rating too!

      • SoCalGal20

        Yeah!

    • Bruno

It’s not hard to get 100% approval when you’ve got a gun to the heads of 100% of your population.

      • SoCalGal20

Exactly! Of all the things I ever thought I’d see, seeing Republicans supporting Drumpf’s approval of Putin and praising the North Korean dictator would not be on the list of things.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

They covet the power that nut has ignoring the fact that the only reason North Korea is afloat is China is basically subsidizing it because they don’t want waves of refugees flowing towards them.

    • Treant

So Luntz wants Obama to turn into a dictator and seize power. I’m actually kind of cool with that.

      • Ross

        Cool with me, too!

      • SoCalGal20

I would be fine with another 4 years of Obama.

        • EweTaw

Me too, but his hair would turn completely white by then. The man deserves a good rest.

          • SoCalGal20

Yes he does. I hope he and Michelle get to take a nice, long, relaxing vacation!

        • IamM

Especially if he stopped treating the Obstructicons with kid gloves and really used that bully pulpit .

      • Todd20036

Wait, Luntz isn’t being snarky? He’s THAT clueless?

        • Treant

I’m pretty sure he’s that clueless, given past performance.

        • SFBruce

Who the hell knows. I did think it might be a fake tweet by someone just wanting to make Lutz look bad, but it’s right there on what certainly looks like Luntz’ twitter account.

    • bkmn

Because Team Trump has NOTHING. No plans, no real talking points. Its always deflection or inciting hatred. They have nothing else.

      • SoCalGal20

Right. And unfortunately they just theow out all the lies and much of the press just rolls over. And even when the do challenge Kellyanne & Co. just roll over them. 🙁

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Can we sent Frank Luntz to one of the camps that Kim Jong-Un runs because he so deserves it?

      • JT

In Luntzspeak they would be “ultimate relaxation destinations.”

    • JustSayin’

I read on the internet that trump is planning to have a dinner meeting with the 100 plus flag officers that support hillary…and poison them…people are saying that. Reliable peolle. Smart people. It was on the internet so it is true.

    • SFBruce

The twitter about Kim Jong-un is the dumbest thing I’ve heard from Luntz, and that’s saying something. Hell, Kim Jong-un has members of his own family executed if they don’t tow the line.

      • SoCalGal20

I know Frank Luntz is a Republican shill (though I admit I do SOMETIMES find those focus group things he does interesting (in a scary way lol) but this is ridiculous even for him. The new Republican talking point seems to be dictators and authoritarians are better than Obama which wtf even?!

    • agcons

Who the fuck is Frank Luntz and why is he still breathing given the apparent lack of neural activity? He’s impressed by Kim Jong-Un’s approval ratings? Jesus Titty-Fucking Christ.

      • JT

He’s been the Orwellian wordsmith for the Rethugs for years, finding slimy and misleading ways to describe their views so the unsophisticated don’t see what they are.

        • agcons

Thanks for the info. I could have looked up his name, but I was terribly worried about my search history. 😀

  • licuado de platano

I saw Judy Collins perform her “Love Letter to Stephen Sondheim” at Ravinia this summer.

“Send In The Clowns” definitely evoked our current situation.

True story: the second thought I had after realizing I was gay was “Oh, fuck, now I have to like Barbra Streisand!” My older brother is also gay and you have NO idea how many times I had to listen to that Streisand Superman album!

I revenged myself with Joan Armatrading and Kate Bush!

    https://youtu.be/Brp8Va8XVQw

PS. I’m really glad Barbra did this.

    • JustSayin’

Your post raised my prurient gay interest and i have to ask, sorry but i just have to, if there was any hillbilly family hanky oanky going on there? You know the porn level stff? LoL us old bastards just want to know!

      • greenmanTN

Uh, no. Though he did have sex with our cousin, who apparently has a HUGE dick. I’ve never seen it myself.

        • JustSayin’

Lol sorry to have asked but the sterotype and porn fantasy stuff. Hope you understand.

          • greenmanTN

Well my mind is pure as the driven snow! (If it wasn’t for ‘dirty’ thoughts I’d have no thoughts at all.) 😉

          • JustSayin’

Lol. To be upfront if i had a gay male twin i would do him in a heartbeat if he wanted too.

          • greenmanTN

He and I are very different. He’s very A-gay, vacations on Fire Island, and I’m… not. I think that makes me the evil twin or something. The flannel wearing snarky little asshole. He’s Gallant to my Goofus.

          • JustSayin’

Funny. I have a closeted half brother who has always had a distrubing resembelance to what Chris Christie looks like now and i have no idea why his wife stays with him.

He once tried to hit on my ex-husband, who is built like a red headed furry lumberjack who at the time had a 30 inch waist and 50 inch chest .

Needless to say he shit himself when i walked up and he realized who i was and who the guy he was hitting on was in a relationship with….he ran out of the Parliment house like a scalded dog.

          • greenmanTN

I’m almost 6 years younger, but I came out to our parents when I was 17. He’s more obviously gay, always suspected, so our parents called him the next day and said “J just came out to us as gay. Is there anything YOU want to tell us?”

He hung up on them, then called back an hour later and admitted he was gay. It was all over and done with in 36 hours.

          • JustSayin’

There ya go. Sounds like cool parents

          • greenmanTN

Just realists, I think. Despite being Southern our parents weren’t really “Jesus-y” so that didn’t get in the way. Our dad was on board from the beginning. Mom had some “What will the neighbors think?!” baggage at first.

          • JustSayin’

All things considered, like the time it happened and social views etc their realism point of view is cool at least to me. Mine always knew so it was a non issue as we have many gays in the family. But so many others have had really fuckex up reactions from their family yours stands out

          • greenmanTN

I didn’t find this out until many years later, but my grandfather on my mother’s side was at least bisexual. (I don’t even remember him) That side of my family is a soap opera.

          • JustSayin’

Lol i wont go there. my sister alone could be a full year of daily Jerry Springer episodes

          • Oscarlating Wildely

Totally old post from above but your mentioning of Kate Bush made my afternoon filled with pleasant memories and good music.
            Running up that hill…

          • greenmanTN

Personally I prefer her earlier work, though I do like some of her recent stuff.

            https://youtu.be/_8Aytn3Fcu0

And just for the hell of it, a recent performance by Andrew Bird. I don’t know why I associate the two of them other than they are both kind of offbeat, not really mainstream.

            https://youtu.be/wRk2iHkOcNE

My singing voice sounds pretty much like a cat being scalded, but I’m glad other people are able to carry a tune.

            Thanks for that!

It literally became a war. He called Joan Armtrading “that fucking dyke music” and I told him the reason they called Edith Piaf “The Little Bird” was because she laid so many goddamn eggs!

        https://youtu.be/oag3I4VRXyM

I don’t actually hate Edith Piaf, but you know, in the heat of battle….

And I actually like Melissa Manchester but I think my ears started bleeding at one point.

    • Nowhereman

I just came back to thank you for reminding me of Joan–I’m listening to a mix of her music right now. I love her voice–and what she says. So thanks!

I hope HRC’s campaign is/was aware of these issues and hopefully they have been sorted out. Knowing NYC restaurant business, tho, I wonder.

  • Henry Auvil

I’ve never quite understood the obsession so many gay men have with Streisand. And I’m an Old!

    • CityWOOF

It’s just good taste, I think. She usually plays an underdog, and we love an underdog. She started out performing in a gay bar. We were the first to discover her, same with Bette Midler.

    • Zollergasse

She’s fucking amazing – that’s all. And I’m not old.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Something really major has happened in the last few days, but I don’t think it was Babs. If you look at the last few days of almost all the state charts on 538, there seems to be no doubt that a major shift has happened and the polls are moving in the opposite direction from the one they had been moving for the past few weeks. The last big inflection point like this in the curves was right after the Democratic convention and Trump’s twitter war with the Khan family.

But I’m totally stumped as to what could have caused this. Trump’s “performance” at the Lauer town hall? Trump’s doubling-down on being best buds with Putin and RT appearance? The North Korean missile tests? Bondi-gate?

    • JustSayin’

No. This was expected if you follow the historical trends. Races with wide gaps before labor day tend to compress the closer you get to the start of early voting. Nothing strange. It is one of the reasons i keep saying the polls are noise until octoberish

    • Treant

People don’t tune in until Labor Day (it’ll continue to grow into October), so you have plenty of voters just coming online and looking around.

That’s most of this, I think, but Trump is historically awful and just had a historically terrible week. That it created a first impression for many voters is just gravy for us.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

Baffling! To me, and I think to anyone who has been paying attention to Trump for the last year, this past week was just more of the same old same old Trump. It must be true that a lot of people don’t even tune in until after Labor Day.

        • Treant

Eye no, rite? There’ll still be an Undecided contingent on Election Day morning.

          • Lazycrockett

From what I’m seeing is that even though Hillary’s support is down Drumpf’s not gaining. People aren’t just naturally running to him.

          • William

Anyone who is still undecided should have their right to vote revoked.

      • Ross

In 2012, people didn’t start paying attention until the last three weeks.

        On 538, Obama went from:

        87% (October 4. Yeah!)

        61% (October 12. Eek!)

Then, in the last three weeks of the election he shot up to 91%.

        • William

          Kill me now.

    • SoCalGal20

All the stuff that happened this week, so things like the CiC Forum and so forth, probably won’t really be reflected in polls until next week. I think to some extent they’re cyclical. They go up and down like the wind. In addition, Drumpf seems to have a pretty fixed ceiling of around 40%. Hillary’s numbers are more volatile. She’d been fairly quiet in the news for the last couple of weeks so maybe people were just getting tired of Drumpf.

But, yes, for whatever reason the shift seems to be going back toward Hillary. Of course, I’ll be interested to see if her “basket of deplorables” comment affects her at all. I’m sure some so-called Independents that might have grudgingly voted for her won’t like that. OTOH she’s got Elizabeth Warren, Michelle Obama, etc. campaigning for her and with her coming up so that could give her a boost.

The poll numbers are all over the place, though, so who knows what’s really going on.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

I completely agree with you on the ceiling. That is a point that is often not discussed. Orange man taps out at 40% at best; I just don’t think that he’ll crack it.
I think that the shift may, oddly, be in that Syria, North Korea, Russia are back in the news and suddenly people think “wait, we could seriously be dealing with a war soon and he just said that he would start one with Iran for a sailor’s *hand gesture.*” I think that most voters agree: Iraq was a stupid idea and we are war fatigued, with good cause, but the idea that he would be in charge of a possible confrontation that may be looming, well, that is truly scary. And explaining how we should all be like Russia in those cases, that’s not helping him. Good.

      • William

Hillary’s number are more dependent on how badly Trump has shoved his own foot into his mouth. If he can manage another Khan caliber disaster, Hillary will be riding high.

    • Ross

This is 538’s Polls-Plus (their most accurate predictor) national poll.

The numbers are never a flat line.

However, they show that Donnie boy is consistently below 40 and Hillary consistently above 40.

Obama was only 1- to 2-points ahead in both his elections. So, Hillary is lookin’ good today at 42 to Donnie’s 38. I know this, too, seems small, but it makes all the difference in the Electoral vote.

    • another_steve
  • JT
    • Ross

      Good.

  • ElJiffy

Laughable as Trump is — and sad! — I think both parties, but especially the Democrats, laugh him off at their own peril.
There’s very little Trump has said which differs substantially from Republican orthodoxy except in its unvarnished bare-faced ugliness, and its tangenital ego tantrums. If Trump crashes in flames come November, the party will survive. Maybe they’ll create a more controllable Trumpbot in 2O2O. In any case he has the support of many people (how many remains to be seen) and he is, after all, the GOP standard-bearer and official candidate.
Mazel to to them with that.
The danger for the other party is in the cozy Versailles-like bubble-world of privileged gatherings like this, in which Barbra Streisand (whom I adore btw) sings for a crowd of wealthy donors in a Clinton fund-raiser targeting gay Democrats, which, by the way: “Unlike most previous fund-raising events, this one was opened to Clinton’s traveling press pool for news coverage.”

Regardless of who wins in November, it’s crystal clear that we now live in a plutocracy, not a democracy nor a republic.

    • Ross

      A cozy Versailles-like bubble-world of privileged gatherings?

Ahhh…you do realize that Hillary has spent the last year traveling the country meeting regular people and listing to them?

Isn’t she allowed, too, the occasional glittering event?

      • ElJiffy

        Yes.
No, I didn’t realize that, possibly because it didn’t happen.
The occasional glittering event? Personally I live for them. And I can’t begrudge Hillary her chance to glitter and be gay, but “unlike most previous fund-raising events, this one was opened to Clinton;s traveling press pool and news coverage”

        • Ross

          Huh?

You think Hillary has NOT spent the last year traveling the country meeting regular people and listing to them?

OT looks like Hillary is walking it back a bit, she has apologized for saying “half”.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

That’s a shame, because it will give the Trumpanzees more fodder. She needs to stand firm and not waver. Any weakness, such as apologizing for telling the truth, will be seen as blood in the water.

    • Bruno

I regret that she said “half” too. But I also regret that she’s expressed any regret over this whatsoever. Just makes her look guilty of saying something wrong.

      • Cuberly

I’m not even worried. The media has been immune to calling this shit out for the most part. To be honest I think it’s the fact that a woman laid it all out that’s making the alt-right blood boil right now.

It’ll just feed another news cycle for a few days. And Drumpf will trumpet it at his rallies. No surprise there. If anything I’m sure we’ll see even more volatile rhetoric from Drumpf’s storm trooper minions.

Maybe Hillz was goading them. Lord knows it doesn’t take much to incite a response from that crowd.

        • Bruno

I obviously don’t care what the Alt-Right or even the Right think. The Left obviously likes this. It’s more about what centrists think. There is this perception that Dems are supposed to take the high road, and this may not look like the high road to some people in the middle. But maybe to some it’ll look like truth-telling and/or fighting back. Hard to know at this point, but surely the media will try to spin the race to the bottom to its fullest malignancy.

          • Ninja0980

            I agree.
Trump and Republicans can spew out any kind of garbage but Clinton or Democrats speak the truth and we have to walk it back.
I hate that, I truly do.

          • Cuberly

            I hear ya.

I do think there’s a group of self declared independents out there that disapprove of anything ugly. Even when that ugly is speaking the truth. They avoid conflict at all cost. I have relatives that are like that. Maybe it’s a symptom of living in the midwest. They really don’t like discussing anything controversial or heavy.

How that particular group perceives the dems is important in this election.

          • Bruno

And with tRump “modifying” his gaffing somewhat it could get dicey with that group. Oh well, it’s out of my control, that’s for sure. I have an old, sick cat and other things to worry about. Just get me to November already so I can figure out my future plans.

      • JT

Well, it could also make her look more “human”. The media have got such a boatload of peculiar negatives they associate with her. Certainly, it makes her look better than Drumpf who is shameless and full of bluster and deceit.

        • Bruno

At least it’s more like a tRump gaffe than a Hillary gaffe. Let’s see how long it takes them to let this slide like they do with all of his shit.

      • I think it makes her look like an adult…

        • Bruno

Too many non-adults voting. It’s about the election, not her integrity, unfortunately.

Keep abusing Trump and make sure it is a wealthy person who is disconnected from the life of the common person. These are the 1 percenters who can’t afford to lose the wages they have reaped from the common person all in the name of artistry and performance. Let’s see if they move in Trump gets elected. They won’t. Their self-referential self-promoting wimps.

The wider media also is culpable in that that it repeatedly has sought to take Trump down will be the same media that will get him elected. All about exposure and the media and Democrats who presume people know their platform and wage war against Trump have gifted him with that.

I wonder if Sondheim wrote these lyrics. He has written special lyrics for Streisand in the past and I wouldn’t be surprised if she called him about these lyrics, too.
