That Time Trump Campaign CEO Steve Bannon Attacked Mitt Romney For Dodging The Vietnam Draft

Buzzfeed reports that during the 2012 campaign, current Trump campaign CEO Steve Bannon blasted Mitt Romney and his sons for avoiding military service. Ahem. Listen below. From their article:

Bannon made the remarks in an October 2012 interview on Conservative Republican Forum Radio, when he was still chairman of Breitbart News and promoting his documentary, The Hope and the Change.

“Mitt Romney goes to the Republican convention, gives his acceptance speech, people give him a standing ovation, and he doesn’t have the common decency to say one thing about our troops fighting in Afghanistan?” Bannon said. “This is a guy who avoided military duty in Vietnam; who has five sons who look like movie stars who have not served their country one day. Oh, but by the way all of them did their two years of Mormon missionary service — every one of them.”

Romney obtained four draft deferments during the Vietnam war, three for his academic studies and one for his service as a Mormon “minister of religion.” Donald Trump also received four draft deferments, including one medical deferment that his campaign has attributed to bone spurs in his feet.

And yet this won’t mean a damned thing to the Trumpanzees.

    • Chucktech

Oh, hell no. What else would they do at this point? They’re already in the carriage on the way to the dance The Donald is bringin’ ‘um to.

  • Lumpy Gaga

Yeah, the Romney boys — movie star good looks… from a distance. Don’t get too close, really.

I wouldn’t kick young Tim Kaine out of bed for eating crackers!

          • Phil2u

            Ohhhhhhhhhh… those cheekbones!

          • Miji

Did young Tim Kaine travel forward in time and star in Smallville?

    • Dramphooey

I had to google them when I read this. Bannon apparently has a low bar for a lot of things.

      • Lumpy Gaga

        Look at his baseline.

      • olandp

Doesn’t he spend most of his time UNDER the bar?

    • bambinoitaliano

Hahahahaha when I read that I question how I ever miss any good looking guys expose to the media. I suppose if he compared them to Mike Fuckabees brood.

      • Lumpy Gaga

Biden’s son Beau found time to serve, and was gorgeous, but… too soon for hot pix.

        • Piernudo15

All the Biden men are/were quite handsome.

    • IamM

Relative to Bannon though. Which you know is what he’s really angry about.

  • Rex

    But Trump is different.
    He has bone spurs.
    In his brain.

    • He has the best bone spurs.

      • MBear

        people are saying that

    • Piet

His bone spurs were so bad that he can’t remember which heel they were on. Funny thing there. If I had “bone spurs” that made my service classification 4F I think I’d try to remember which foot I’d claimed them on.

      • JCF

My foot currently hurts like a muthf#cka: yeah, I think I know which one has the spur… 🙁

  • bambinoitaliano

What about the two knobs he spawned? Qusay and Uday Trump. Did they serve in the militrary.

    • Dramphooey

They’ve been overseas protecting mankind from any possible revolt by various endangered species.

      • sherman

Here’s one I wish they would make extinct.

    • lymis

Not only didn’t they serve in the military, but by all indications, they haven’t done anything for anyone or any cause. I don’t think Romney’s sons’ missionary time is equivalent to military service, but at least it’s service to something besides their own egos.

      • sherman

I think a case could be made that trying to convert people to your religion is quite a bit about ego. “Hey, join MY religion because MY god is the greatest.”

        • Miji

There is probably also some kind of threat of eternal damnation or some such personal punishment, no? Seems like self-preservation/ status based decision to me.

      • Chucktech

Lymis, tell me you’re not holding “missionary service” as some kind of altruistic endeavor on their part. They positively get wet over the prospect of spreading their laughable woo to credulous peoples. Besides, their church requires this “service” from them.

But Huma is a liability to Hillary Clinton because she married a douche? Oh, okay media.

    • Gustav2

And if the media would stay on the tax returns instead of emails…

      • Bob Conti

I still want to see the letter from the NFL…

      • HZ81

Hillary Clinton needs to show the media her x-rays. Trump? We’ll get to it sooner or never.

  • Bill Post

But…but… John Kerry threw his medals.

    • Gustav2

but…but…but you can’t Swift Boat those who didn’t serve.

…and they all got tongues slicker than a ‘tweny dolla’ whore.

Boat anchors inherently always point downward….

      Unless the ship has sunk.

  • boatboy_srq

Apparently the only time draft dodging is OK is when their guy did the dodging. How typical of a Rethug to demand that everyone ELSE serve.

    • olandp

      It is the Republican way.

  • another_steve

So I turn my computer on and first thing I see is a picture of the Bannon pig? Feh.

Something lovely for my JMG darlings.

    • Phil2u

HA HA. The Bannon photo is actually flattering, maybe even profesionally done. He usually looks like a wino begging on the street corner.

      • Pilot Nozzle

I love how the red is turned WAY up in the JMG Bannon photo, bringing out the lovely red of the broken capillaries and Rosacea.

  • Texndoc

Chris Hayes had an interesting stat last night: since Kelly Ann and Bannon joined the campaign: number of media interviews for both: 37. Number for Kelly Ann: 37. Number for Bannon: 0.

The problem with publishing a constant stream of toxic venom and hate-filled screeds, is your own words will eventually come back at you. Classic case of the mad scorpion stinging itself to death.

  • Piernudo15

I’m curious to see how next week’s Commander-in-chief forum goes. Trump and Hillary will address an audience of veterans and current military members. I wonder what kind of reception they will get and what questions they’ll get asked. A recent poll I saw showed Trump leading Hillary among military voters. I don’t get it.

  • Larry in Oklahoma

It’s all so strange how Bannon is quick to talk smack about Mitt Romney and sons and Trump and HIS sons are guilty of the same thing. At least, the Romney kids did something to try to serve. The Trump kids can only “MY FATHER” and lie after that.

  • bob

Simple case of ” follow the money ” !

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Wait, Bannon is being duplicitous?!? Well I’m just shocked, truly I am……the same way I’m shocked about Schock.

  • That_Looks_Delicious

Joe, you forgot to tag this one with “Hypocrisy Explosion”.

  • coram nobis

It’s a big deal, because both Romney and Trump were old enough to be eligible for a wartime draft, at a time when a deferment meant the difference between getting on with university and a career with a 2-S or 1-Y status, or ending up in the Central Highlands as an 11B light infantryman. It was conscription, not the option of volunteering, which meant they had to actively avoid service somehow.

It’ll be fascinating to see this guy distinguish how he can attack Romney but excuse Donald.

Pressed by Stephanopoulos to name the sacrifices he’d made for his country, Trump said: “I think I’ve made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. I’ve had tremendous success. I think I’ve done a lot.”
    — interview on the Khizr Khan controversy

Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don’t hesitate
To send your sons off before it’s too late.
And you can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

    And it’s one, two, three
What are we fighting for? …
