Clinton Camp Slams Trump’s Visit To Mexico

Politico reports:

Donald Trump’s meeting in Mexico with President Enrique PeΓ±a Nieto ahead of his immigration speech Wednesday night in Phoenix will not change anything about what he has previously said about the country or its people, a top aide for Hillary Clinton’s campaign said.

“From the first days of his campaign, Donald Trump has painted Mexicans as ‘rapists’ and criminals and has promised to deport 16 million people, including children and U.S. citizens. He has said we should force Mexico to pay for his giant border wall. He has said we should ban remittances to families in Mexico if Mexico doesn’t pay up,” communications director Jennifer Palmieri said in a statement following confirmation of Trump’s visit to Mexico City.

“What ultimately matters is what Donald Trump says to voters in Arizona, not Mexico, and whether he remains committed to the splitting up of families and deportation of millions,” Palmieri said in a statement.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

OK, today might be a good time to build that wall.

    • Rex

      While Trump’s still in Mexico.

      • Ernest Endevor

Because he clearly doesn’t know how ladders work.

        • Lumpy Gaga

Calves the size of golf balls.

          • Oikos

We were promised calves the size of cantaloupes.

          • Lumpy Gaga

            And drugs!

          • Ernest Endevor

            Drugs?

          • Hank

What do you think he is hiding under that orange mammal sitting on his head???

          • That_Looks_Delicious

Total sensory deprivation and backup drugs.

      • GanymedeRenard

Nope. I’m sure Mexico won’t keep him. He’s a monster created by the U.S., so the U.S. should deal with him. What about building a wall around the Bermuda Triangle and toss him in?

    • DumbHairyApe

I thought his plan to go to Mexico might have been incentive enough for Mexico to build that wall and pay for it all- just to keep Trump out.

  • thom

she needs to stop playing defensive. Trump has new handlers who are politically savvy they’re not letting him make the mistakes he’s made before. we all think he’s a buffoon, but his chances increase every time he has a relatively gaffe free week.
according to a new abc poll released this morning clintons unfavorability numbers have reached a new high of 56% only a few points better than trumps. it’s still a volatile election with many conflicted voters.
if he comes out of this meeting looking presidential then he could start making inroads

    • bambinoitaliano

It’s a big mistake to assume only the young kids are impressionable until you look at the number of uninformed supporters he has.

      • Todd20036

They’re willfully ignorant. First and foremost: white people are superior. Straight people are superior. Christians are superior. You don’t need to be smart if you believe in Jesus.

You get a candidate who tells you all that, everything else, no matter how contradictory or how much it eventually can hurt you, is secondary

        • lymis

No argument, but it still doesn’t explain why they pick such incredibly shitty people to represent them.

    • Rambie

The race naturally tightens a bit over the post convention period and before the debates.

      • thom

yeah, but 56% unfavorable? only one other candidate in history has had worse numbers and that’s Trump.
everyday I’m thankful he got the nomination, I think Rubio, Kasich or Bush would have a healthy lead by now over her.
and I say this as a big supporter who thinks she will make a fantastic president

        • Todd20036

I think too many people realize that having high favorable ratings is meaningless. W had good ratings, and he’s probably the worst president we’ve had since Nixon, and some could argue worse than that.

          • thom

            and he was elected twice.

          • Todd20036

            Once

        • lymis

Rachel Maddow, a few weeks back, did a really interesting analysis on Hillary’s unfavorables. She’s always deeply disliked when she (or Bill) is running for something, but whenever she’s actually in the position, her favorables shoot up dramatically. People like the job she does when she has it, they just hate her when she’s running for it.

She may have hugely unfavorable numbers now, but there’s no actual reason to believe that they’d stay that way.

Assuming she wins, 2020 will be problematic, and the midterms are likely to be a bloodbath, but her numbers are probably going to look much better in office.

She’s an interesting case where many of the very things that make her less attractive as a candidate are exactly the things that help her get the job done extremely well.

Of course, the GOP, if they have a majority in Congress, will do even more to take her down than they did with Obama.

    • DumbHairyApe

First of all, his new “handlers” are just as moronic and bigoted and racist and stupid as he is. Secondly, a leopard cannot change its spots. Thirdly, ONE poll isn’t a valid indicator by itself. Fourthly he cannot help but make a gaffe every time he tweets or opens his mouth, sadly most people are so use to his gaffes they don’t even see them as such anymore. If Hillary had said or tweeted 1/100th of his insanity the GOP would have been even more ablaze with vitriolic rhetoric than it normally is.

And lastly, he (and his psychophants) will say he came across as presidential. He will boast about himself. He will say “Nino LOVED me!” “The Mexican people LOVED me!”, etc….but video and the testimony of Nino and others will say otherwise. None of it will persuade his followers to see him fairly. VOTE!!!!

      • thom

i agree with his handlers. but they have been keeping him in check since they came on board. I don’t think he’s changed. im just hoping the rest of America can see through his act.
I also agree that one poll does not tell the whole story. but almost (every?) poll this week has seen a drop in numbers for clinton

    • another_steve

The trip to Mexico is intended primarily to pander to the small sliver of Hispanic voters who are still theoretically available to Trump. In the end, it won’t matter through. He’s no where near the percentage of Hispanic voters he needs to win and even if this trip gives him a slight bounce, it won’t be enough.

I hope the US customs gave him a hard time at the border coming back. Remove his comb over in case he is smuggling crystal meth to start.

They’d need a medical examiner from CSI – along with a full hazmat suit and a JCB.

          And call Roto Rooter…

  • Blake Jordan

He cannot pull back from his racist views of Mexico, it is what got him his current support…
As if he could gain enough middle grounders to make up for the right racists he loses by softening on his anti-immigrant extremism…

    • geoffalnutt

I can’t imagine the President Of Mexico doing anything but spitting in his face.

      • TuuxKabin

Mexicans are by nature a polite society. To your face. Nieto may hurl a ‘hackey’ at his back when they part ways.

        • Dazzer

Is a ‘hackey’ some kind of donkey?

I now have this image in my head of Trump turning around to leave and the President of Mexico cold-cocking him with a air-borne donkey

          • TuuxKabin

Your image is far better than what I’ve learned a hackey/hacky to be.

The matter brought up when clearing one’s throat. Combination spittle and phlegm.

“I can’t ride in Milton’s car, all those hackies on the windshield/screen gross me out” was a phrase a friend used to describe her not wanting to ride in the car of a schoolmate’s dad.

          • That_Looks_Delicious

            ….

  • DaddyRay

I hope they secretly film the meeting and when Trump starts lying about what was said or agreed to they release the video

  • bambinoitaliano

He comes back and tell his base of his incredible engineering and architecture skills that a wall can be build cheaply and easily.

    • lymis

      The BEST wall.

And with all his business dealings with China, maybe he can get some expert assistance. China knows walls.

I think trump has everything to gain from this meeting and very little to lose. it looks like he’s willing to meet with people he disagrees with. plus, by having a private meeting without journalists he can lie about any discussions they have. and if it comes down to a he-said he-said with the president of Mexico, well, that’s a win for trump. it motivates his base and solidifies his brand

    • Butch

I have to disagree. The president of Mexico can read the polls and knows that Trump probably isn’t going to be president. He also knows what Trump has said about Mexicans and building a wall. He has every reason in the world to make Trump look bad.

      • That_Looks_Delicious

This visit has also caused a lot of indignation within Mexico, and PeΓ±a Nieto needs to worry about his own poll numbers. All politics is local.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I don’t see why the president of Mexico won’t call Trump out if Trump says really outlandish crap like the “President of Mexico agrees with my wall proposal.”

  • Robert Flanagan

I bet there will be THOUSANDS of cheering Mexican at the airport greeting him. That is because they all Love him!

If there is an anti-Christ (which I don’t believe) it’s Donald Trump.

    • kanehau

      There’s plenty of anti-christs. We’re called atheists πŸ˜‰

      • greenmanTN

I’m right there with you. My parents were believers, but not really religious, (an hour in church every Sunday and otherwise you never heard about Jesus again, and half the time I ducked out of youth church my dad was in the parking lot too).

I did get Baptized by accident though, which is a pretty funny story.

        • kanehau

My dad was a minister πŸ˜‰

          • greenmanTN

I swear to god this is true. It was Easter Sunday and I was in “youth church.” The Youth Minister said “Stand up if you love Jesus.” Never mind that just a week before I was burning black candles wishing death upon my enemies, but you’re in church and someone says “Stand up if you love Jesus,” so you stand up.

Next thing I know I’m downstairs in fron of the congregation, stripped down to my tighty whiteys and dunked in a tub, then I got dressed again.

Because it WAS Easter Sunday and this situation wasn’t bad enough, there was a pot-luck lunch afterward and people kept coming up to me and congratulating the depth of my faith. All I could think about was the wet underwear crawling up my ass and giving me a wet wedgie.

I don’t know why but I never got religion.

          • greenmanTN

I can’t imagine. Other than attending church on Sunday my family wasn’t really religious.

Yet I would place the morals and ethics I was taught against any right winger.
