HAWAII: Openly Lesbian State Rep Who Voted Against Same-Sex Marriage Loses Democratic Primary

Back in 2013, Hawaii state Rep. Jo Jordan became the first openly LGBT legislator in history to vote against same-sex marriage, earning her wild praise from hate group leaders Tony Perkins and Brian Brown. Today JMG reader Donovan writes to let us know that Jordan lost her seat to a former Green Party member in Saturday’s Democratic primary. Good.

Alaska, or Hawaii? Headline says one, body says the other…

    • That Guy

      Should be Hawaii.

Sounds like Alaska would be a better fit for her politics.

      • ByronK

My mistake. My archives for that week in 2013 are full of Alaska news about the Anchorage rights ordinance. DOH.

    she’s a screwball. good!

    • JoeMyGod

Of all the many many many hours we spent watching marriage hearing live-streams, NOTHING will ever top the insane hatred we saw in Hawaii. Nothing.

      • Todd20036

And this quisling justified their hatred with a no vote

      • I agree. it was just a seemingly endless stream and so very repetitive. if anything it should have been a reason for people to switch to supporting the bill and yet it is what she used to excuse her no vote. I am glad she is out of that office.

        • Deanna B.

Unfortunately, she skated through the 2014 election with no serious opposition. It would have sent a strong message had she been defeated in the election following the vote.

      • Deanna B.

“Hello Mr. Chairman, I am speaker 3,185. Think of the keiki! Why won’t anyone think of the keiki who will be taught rimming because of this?!”

        • I was actually surprised at the RNC rollcall vote last month when no one brought up the sacred keiki.

          • Balderdashing

They only practiced the word for the marriage hearing. When RNC was coaching for last month, they found too many people were saying “kinky” and “kraykray” instead, and they didn’t want to risk a big slip before the media.

      • Sam_Handwich

i get it confused with the Rhode Island senate hearings for some reason…it all runs together in my head. both very late nights watching here at JMG!

have fun at jury duty, and do not be seduced by any vending machine sandwiches!

      • Joan Crawfabulous

Living here for almost 16 years, I’m surprised I didn’t hear about her… she is on Oahu I think. Thank goodness we have Tulsi here on Kauai! Each island is kinda like it’s own state in a way. Poor thing to have to live with that hate forever now…

        • TimCA

Thumbs down to the disingenuous Tulsi Gabbard!!!

      • Balderdashing

Oh ye of little faith. I thought that about reality TV, but the bottom of the barrel has turned into a mine shaft. I thought back in February that Trump was already so extreme it was hard to satirize him by exaggeration, and look what has happened since. If they had bothered with “discussion” before HB2 was passed, I’m sure the Hawaii hearings would seem reasoned in comparison. And the hate being spewed by Trumpbots, not just about us but about Mexicans, Muslims, blacks and women, surpasses anything I’d have credited in 2016, particularly when it’s being openly endorsed by some factions of the media. McCarthyism has risen again in KKK garb.

    • yes those were most memorable and not in a good way. and then even after the hearings they still continued to stand outside and yell and you could hear them during the final deliberations on the bill. but in the end, that opposition could not prevail.

  • bkmn

    Hey Jo…

    • Elagabalus

Now my dear, we must maintain the dowager’s memory properly: we both know that she would never be so crass as to make that particular gesture with her finger. She’d find another, more subtle way to say “fuck you” and do it with much more aplomb than that.

      • Mihangel apYrs

indeed, as a lady she would have frozen her with a glance just before the butler escorted out.

      • Sam_Handwich

        yes. with BOTH middle fingers

      • Reality.Bites

I for one have seen no obituary. How very presumptuous of you!

        • Elagabalus

  • well good. her excuses for not voting for it were poor and her actions did nothing but to give more poor cover to those who oppose marriage equality. the anti-gay testimony deserved to be decried….not cited as a valid reason to vote agasint the rights for others. I am sure she can find other good places to be but the legislature is not it.

    • TimCA

She never once was able to give any real, cogent argument in support of her opposition.

  • ceeenbee

Any idea what her twisted rationale was?

    • her excuse was that she felt the need to represent the views of everyone on the Island and becasue everyone was not in favor of it she had to be agasint it. also she jumped on the “must protect religious freedom” argument even though it did nothing to threaten religious liberty.

      • ceeenbee

        Thanks. How pathetic.

  • Deanna B.

This wack job represents a liberal district, so she wasn’t voting out of fear of constituent backlash. In fact, she voted in FAVOR of civil unions just 2 years before and suffered no backlash whatsoever. Indeed, voting “no” on marriage equality was the far riskier thing to do. So why did she, a lesbian, take a greater risk in order to vote in favor of discrimination against herself? Well, she gave an interview a few months after the vote and explained that she was guided by the “spirit of the mountain” to vote no. She also believes that her calling is to be a “bridge” between anti-gay Christians and gay people, and voting no would position her to fulfill her destiny to be that antigay/gay bridge. Shorter version: She’s nuts.

    • Kelly Lape

Building a bridge? Equality is a bridge.

      • Deanna B.

The voters went all Chris Christie on her ass and shut that bridge down!

There are voices to listen to and voices to ignore. Voices that tell you to screw your own people to please others (who will never be placated no matter what you do) should be ignored. End of story.

      • Deanna B.

In this case, the voice was that of a “mountain spirit,” so she probably should have ignored it regardless of what it told her to do.

        • Balderdashing

Why didn’t she obey it when it told her to jump into the volcano??

          • TuuxKabin

    • margaretpoa

The “spirit of the mountain”? Good gravy Another one of those.

    • She’s now a bridge to nowhere. Good that her crazy ass is out of the way for a sane Democrat to represent the citizens of that district.

      • D. J.

I’m sure the Log Cabinettes are trying to sell her a table for the Newt meet & greet.

    • JT

Gay bridge is much better than anti-gay bridge.

      Another Bridge to Nowhere.

    • GayOldLady

Whoa! So long story short, she voted “no” because the Mountain told her too? Is this the same mountain that just a few hundred years ago was demanding the sacrifice of virgins? What a bossy ass mountain!

    • Jay Silversmith

I got a bridge I’ll sell her. Hint: those voices you hear need medication

    • Robincho

Not real sure about the “spirit” here, but there’s definitely a “mountain” in the picture. Unfortunately for JoJo, but luckily for us, the mountain is made up entirely of bullshit. The dumbass on this woman stretches all the way from Ha’eha’e to Kumukahi, and that’s hella far…

    • NO MORE GOP!

      Nuts, possibly. Stupid, most definitely.

  • Andrea Pizzocaro

She said: ‘I might vote against something that I personally believe in’.
    That makes her a f#cktard.

    • boatboy_srq

That all depends on the context. If it were something her constituents strongly opposed, that’s defensible. If it were just something to appease outsiders (as her SSM vote was)…. not so much.

  • Paula

Jo, we really don’t mind if you go back into the closet, Please!

Oh I remember her. There were two *very* fine young men from the Paradise Island, both as far as I know as hetero as the day is long. And this wench went up to the mic, noting how awful it was that she was being treated so nastily by the big bad LGBT community that why couldn’t “they” get that she just had a different opinion?
The contrast was stark. Good riddance. Trash collection is on Monday.

I’ve been to the area she represents (northwest Oahu); it’s off the tourist track and rather poor. I don’t know if she thought she was representing her constituents wishes. Given the outcome of this election, she guessed wrong.

If you ever have the opportunity, do visit the area to see the real Hawaii. Drive up the west coast until the road runs out at Ka’ena point, park and take a swim in the ocean with no man-made development to mar the view.

    • TuuxKabin

  • margaretpoa

    Good! Self loathing bitch.

  • JT

    About her vote,

she explained that she was undecided, because even though 75 percent of
her constituents support marriage equality, she felt she had to
represent the entire state. She seemed to be unaware that statewide polling showed a 55 percent majority support marriage equality.

Not the sharpest tool in the shed on both counts.

    • Cackalaquiano

I remember that bullshit logic of hers. It didn’t make any more sense back then either.

    • TimCA

She could never discuss the merits of this issue. I’ve heard her being interviewed on radio about other topics. She never struck me as being particularly bright.

      • leastyebejudged

She’s not; but they elected her in the first place cus Democrat.

    • NowAnAgnostic

So dull Home Depot won’t even take her back.

    • Um — if she was elected to represent a particular district, why does she feel it necessary to represent the entire state?

      Not real bright.

Do I smell an unreconstructed lesbian feminist who thinks that marriage reinforces the patriarchy? Although I’ve never understood how marriage between two women is patriarchal.

  • clay

from Donovan’s linked article: “The Hawaii Democratic Party said late last month that Gates was actually not supposed to run as a Democrat on the ticket because he had run in 2014 as a Green Party candidate, which should bar him from the party for three years. However, party officials said they didn’t notice the error in time.”

    Or, “Oops (not oops).”

  • Reality.Bites

And in other Hawaiian LGBT news…

Keahu Kahuanui, who played the gay best friend of an uber straight Colton Haynes and boyfriend of werewolf Charlie Carver on Teen Wolf will recur as Eddie, Josh’s new boyfriend, and furthermore, Josh’s new human boyfriend on a CW show called The Originals.

  • GayOldLady

Of all of the things that would be difficult to live with at the end of your life, voting against your L/G sisters and brother, likely for the sake of political gain, would be the worst. And she is assured of her place in the historical record as the first openly gay woman in Hawaii to vote against Marriage equality. Sad, sad, sad.

    • Reality.Bites

Oh, I think voting that way for and it costing you everything is worse than just being a sellout. This is a state legislature, after all. She probably could have held that seat for the rest of her life

Good news is that Fale lost his run for the State Senate so his political career is hopefully finished for good!

  • Ninja0980

There’s a deeper back story to this and it has to do with her losing power in an inter party war.
Bottom line, she was willing to hurt everyone in Hawaii’s LGBT community because of a personal grudge.
Only right that she has finally been shown the door for that.
